Lila Shroff and Adam Kipust are two of many students at MIHS who are using Summer 2018 to pursue their passions. They hope that through hard work this summer, they will understand more about what they want for their own futures, and inspire other students to take as many opportunities as possible. Adam Kipust is planning to work as an intern at University of Washington’s Center for Innate Immunity and Immune Diseases. According to CIIID, “[The] program is a 10week hands-on lab experi-
ence … Interns will learn molecular and cell biology lab techniques from professional scientists.” Aside from his internship, Kipust will be going to Stanford for two weeks to complete an internship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. “I am interested in the program because I have a passion for medicine and want to become a physician,” Kipust said. “I recommend other high schoolers to apply to a lot of different programs, especially in areas that they are passionate about. let being rejected from one program stop you from applying to others.” Lila Shroff, a sophomore at MIHS, has spent her year abroad as an exchange student in Madrid, Spain, When she comes back, she is excited to start her internship at the KUOW Radioactive Intro to Journalism Workshop. “The program is a paid internship for high school students that provides us with the opportunity to learn about what it means to be a journalist,” Shroff said. Over the summer,
students will gain the skills to create radio stories: audio recording, audio editing, interviewing, script writing and speaking on the air, while working with professional journalists at KUOW. “I have always been interested in journalism and I love a good podcast,” Shroff said. When asked about what she recommends for how to find things to do over the summer, Shroff said, “look for opportunities online, ask around, and put yourself out there. You never know what might come your way.”
Cheerios and Netflix are Key To Being Fit this Summer Students Jon Na and Emily Yang express how they plan to “stay fit” over the summer, in preparation for fall sports. Typically, summer is a time to relax, take a break from activities and have fun with friends. However, star athletes Emily Yang and Jon Na view summer as a chance to get fit and ready for the fall sports season. “I’ve been playing soccer since I was in the womb; one might say I came out kicking,” said Yang, an esteemed soccer player who made the varsity girls soccer team in her freshman year. “I am on the Cross Country, Track and Field, and Boys Swive team,” Na said. Yang and Na will be working hard, specifically on cardio and endurance, ensuring that their fitness increases over the break. However, their approaches to getting fit are drastically different. “I suggest staying fit
by screaming while watching ‘The Office’ when Jim and Pam are drifting apart,” Yang said. “At least a five mile run every day,” Na said. “Try to exercise with a friend, it will make you less sad.” Strength is also an important factor to getting ready for the fall seasons. “Lifting Honey Nut Cheerio boxes into my Target shopping cart every Friday night strengthens and fuels me,” Yang said. “My workout regimen during the summer will include chugging water, marathoning (but only Netflix) and lifting five pound weights when I feel like it.” The last essential to maintaining fitness over Summer is eating healthy. “[My top five fit foods are] seaweed,

fruit popsicles, the school cafeteria ranch dressing, carrots and watermelon,” Na said. “Fit foods for me will include Honey Nut Cheerios, Chocolate Cheerios, Fruity Cheerios, Peanut Butter Chocolate Cheerios, and regular Cheerios,” Yang said. “Never fruits. Doctors never tell you this, but did you know fruits are chock-full of sugar? Disgraceful.” These two top notch athletes will come into
their fall sports at a full sprint, thanks to their high endurance, impeccable strength and green eating. The top things to understand are that Cheerios are an essential food for a healthy life, and laughing at Netflix comedies provides great cardiovascular exercise. Lastly, “If you pretend to be injured, you can skip laps on the track,” Na said, a final tip for if you ever need a break from being so fit.
