• May’s Rotary Islanders of the Month are Holly Hubbard and Greg Fuchs. • Band students participated in this weekend’s WMEA/WIAA State Solo and Ensemble Contest. The results were as follows: Winners: MIHS Brass Choir- Large Brass Ensemble MIHS Woodwind Sextet- Large Woodwind Ensemble Tynan McGee-Trombone Lauren Nakatsu- Clarinet Sam Bailey- Bass Clarinet

• Clarke and Clarke Art and Artifacts and Suzanne Zahr’s SZ Gallery held their First Friday art walk on Friday. • On Friday, Island Books hosted a Tournament of Roses Day as a fundraiser for the MIHS Band. • Monday, April 30, was National Therapy Animal Day. • On Thursday, volcanic eruption of Kilauea in Hawaii caused emergency evacuations and the spattering of debris. High levels of sulfur dioxide gas are a significant threat.

• The Trump administration is ending the temporary protected status of over 50,000 Hondurans who have been living and working in the United States since the destructive Hurricane Mitch in 1999.

• Ichiro Suzuki left the Mariner’s roster, but remains in a management role at the Mariner’s office. His new position is Special Assistant to the Chairman. • May Day was met with the 19th annual March for Immigrant and Workers Rights. The march was peaceful and lasted two hours, at the end, only one protestor had been arrested. • Tacoma teenager Monique Tillman, who was thrown by a police officer in 2014, and her brother Eric Branch sued the officer responsible, and Tacoma must pay $1M.
