REBIRTH Inspiration This ring stands for a new birth growing from death. I collected towel paper from the trash can in my school, mixing other garbage to make hand-made paper. This reflects my daily routine and creates new life from the past.
Artist Statement Sentimental jewelry from the Victorian period elicits an emotional reaction in people. Researching Victorian history led me to the topic of death and life, therefore, I created a piece of jewelry to portray rebirth. As an artist who designs custom jewelry, I talk to myself and ask questions throughout my thinking process. Eggshells represent the meaning of new life and relate to domestic waste as well. Starting from this point, I searched for more material that people throw away and regard as garbage, such as garlic peels, plastic bags, Styrofoam, and tea leaves. In addition, I collected towel from the trash can in my studio and in the woman’s restroom. This junk is a part of my life and reminds me about my daily routine. After I combined the refuse and mixed them into paper mixture, it become a whole new thing.
