UDDINGSTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL

YOUR PARENT COUNCIL / PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION TEAM

The joint PC/PTA of Uddingston Grammar School represents and services the needs of 1150 young people, their guardians and the local community. This body is key to the strategic direction of the school and in recent years have taken the leading role in the move from the old building at Station Road to our current home on Old Glasgow Road; the appointment in 2008 of the existing headteacher as well as members of the Senior Management Team; the redevelopment of Porterswell; the transition to a 33 period week model; the rezoning of the catchment area and is currently involved in the Curriculum for Excellence process. The PC/PTA voice is a hugely important one – we meet on the last Tuesday of each month when we discuss issues surrounding our young people, their school and its place within our community. We have community and church representatives as well as representation from our elected members on the group, as well as a number of staff, guardians and parents – all of whom have an input into the decisions made which affect all of our young people. The PC/PTA year begins in August with an open and transparent review of examination results, and as the year goes on, we focus on curriculum development, staffing, pupil personalisation and choice culminating in the PC School Awards Ceremony in Uddingston Old Parish Church. Our meetings are always lively, with honest and challenging debate being the format – come along and join us – together we can make our school the best we can for our young people, their families and their communities. Vice Chairperson

Mrs Gillian Archibald

Mr Scott Mackie

“I first joined the PC 3 years ago when my oldest son started in first year at The Grammar and have been Chair for the past 2 years. The role of the PC is to support the school, teachers and pupils and to represent the views of the parents on all matters relating to the school and education of all pupils. The meetings give an opportunity for lively debate, discussing issues relevant to the school, parents and pupils and developing new ideas on the way forward to ensure each and every pupil achieves their potential.”

“I am a consultant optometrist who grew up in Lanarkshire and who is passionate about giving good education to all students through Primary, Secondary and Tertiary education. The mission of the PC/PTA is to be the ‘voice of the parents’ and to communicate and facilitate ideas and innovation so that education at Uddingston Grammar can adapt and produce the results and opportunities to allow the next generation to contribute positively to our multi-cultural society.”

Parent and Community Members JOHN LIPOWSKI COMMUNITY MEMBER OF PC

I am the Community Member on the Uddingston Grammar Parent Council representing Viewpark Parish Church. The Kirk Session takes an interest in UGS and it is part of my responsibility to inform the Session of how the school is progressing in terms of courses, activities, achievements etc. As a member of the Parent Council it is my duty to support the Head Teacher in taking forward his vision for the school. The PC can influence various bodies including the Education Authority to act in the best interest of the School. The PC is a democratic organisation arriving at decisions after good debate. The PC should, along with staff achieve the best possible circumstances for the pupils to develop.

STUART MCLELLAN PARENT I have been a parent member of the PC for a few years now. I have a son at the school (the second of two children who have attended Uddingston Grammar). The PC has an opportunity to contribute and offer an opinion on the running of the school which I welcome and enjoy. I would really like to see more parent members coming along to the PC meetings and would encourage all parents to come along. It also offers an opportunity to find out (something in advance of the pupils!!) what is happening in the school.

MARY FOX PARENT I am a parent of a fifth year pupil. I joined the PC because I am interested in helping the pupils and staff to maintain the high standards set by the school. I would like to help fundraise if there is a need for equipment etc. I am interested in how the school is going forward with CfE and what measures the Senior Management Team are putting in place to ensure that all pupils achieve their full potential, and that all pupils feel safe in the environment and are as proud as I am to say I was a pupil or am a pupil of Uddingston Grammar.

DANIEL MURRAY PARENT I am the parent of a 4th year pupil. I would like to provide support to the school and the staff and be a forum for parents to discuss issues, raise concerns and offer suggestions. I see the Parent Council as the place for open discussion in detail regarding topics which affect or may affect the running or performance of the school. The Parent Council should support the efforts of the staff to enable all pupils to maximise their achievements in school, whether academic or otherwise.

SHEILA BENNETT PARENT I am the parent of an S3 pupil and S1 pupil from August 2013. I joined the PC to find out more about how the school operated and how it would be dealing with the advent of Curriculum for Excellence. Attendance at the meetings has helped give me a better understanding of the difficulties faced by schools in the current climate. It has also helped me have a clearer picture of timetabling issues.

ANNE MARIE MINTY PARENT I have two children at the school and decided to join the Parent Council as I thought it would be the place to find out more information about what was happening in the school. I was aware that the school had a good reputation for academic achievement and a good reputation within the Community. I think it is important to be well-informed to ensure that you can support your children and ensure that the school does the best it can for all pupils in the school. The Parent Council’s role should be to ensure that the school is aware of any concerns that parents might have and that these concerns are addressed in an appropriate manner. Their role should also be to ensure that the school promotes itself and its achievements to all parents and the wider community. If necessary they should help the school to fund raise for certain projects such as new equipment.

EUNICE MCALLISTER PARENT I am a parent of two children at Uddingston Grammar School. I attend PC meetings so I can understand more about how the school is run and to give feedback to the school on the strengths and weaknesses of the school and help it to improve to the benefit of pupils, staff and parents. The meetings are very constructive and friendly, and more to the point, fun.
