History of
D
ungarvan is a charming authentic traditional Irish town with a long heritage, cozily nestling between mountains and sea and surrounded by the most delightful of scenery. A sense of living history seeps from the well kept old style shop fronts and intermingled attractive homesteads. Whether you are sitting back enjoying the breath taking views from the comfort of the resort, taking a morning walk on Clonea strand or a stroll along the moonlit harbour on a summers evening there is a special feeling in the air with a sense of fresh nostalgia blowing down from The Comeraghs and in over the Bay. Winsome in nature, with real character, the town emanating from a central square is attractive, engaging and downright loveable. So let’s sit back, relax , and go back to the beginning... The Irish name for the town is Dun Garbhainn meaning “Garvans Fort” and takes its name from Saint Garbhann who founded a church there in the 7th century.
However there was life in Dungarvan long before it took its present
name, as in the late 1800’s excavations at a local cave uncovered mammoth elephant bones. This indicates that 40,000 years ago, the area, providing ideal conditions, was alive with giant ground sloths and wooly mammoths. Some indications of Stone Age activity have been identified in the area but Dungarvan’s first real settlers arrived in the 3rd century in the form of a tribe called “THE DEISE“. The town itself only really came into existence with arrival of the Normans and an urban centre developed in the shelter of a large Norman fortification founded in 1185. The castle was strengthened by King John of Robin Hood fame in the early 1200’s and was hence known as KING JOHNS CASTLE. In 1215 the town was given a charter by King John.

For centuries the most important industry that kept the town going was fishing and was the backbone of the local economy even providing export opportunities to Spain and Britain. The most important species was Hake which was in plentiful supply after ideal spawning conditions were created when the town walls were extended seawards (creating sheltered water) and the development of a large commercial pottery outside of these walls provided “dirty ground”. A new lease of life was given to the town in the early 19th century when it was re-planned by the 5th and 6th Dukes of Devonshire - a period when a lot of what still exists today, Davitts Quay, Devonshire Bridge, Grattan Square and surrounding streets were constructed.
By the 1920’s the fishing industry was in decline and very little industrialization took place in the area to replace it until the late 1960’s.
Dungarvan is today a thriving seaside and market town with a population of over 8000 people with another 20,000 living in the hinterland of prosperous farms and villages.
Excavations took place in the late 1800’s uncovering mammoth elephant bones in a local cave in the area!
SOME INTERESTING FACTS... • D ungarvan is the home of Radley engineering, the company responsible for manufacturing the Spire of Dublin. • I relands first cycling club “The Dungarvan Ramblers” was founded in the town in 1869 by Richard Edward Brennan. • T he Duke of Devonshire who redesigned Dungarvan in the early 19th century was the richest man in England at the time. • S ir John Betjeman, British poet laureate, uses the line “ Dungarvan
in the rain” to close each verse in his poem “The Irish Unionists farewell to Gretta Hellstrom”. • E rnest Thomas Sinton Walton, physician and Nobel Laureate famous for his work on splitting the atom, was born in Abbeyside in October 1903. • D ungarvan escaped Cromwellian destruction in 1649 when Oliver Cromwell decided to spare the town after a local woman offered him a goblet of wine when his army victoriously entered the city gates.
• R ing or “AN RINN” nearby is the only official Gaeltacht (an area where the predominant language is Irish) in Waterford. • D ungarvan G.A.A. club is the oldest in county Waterford being affiliated on June 1st 1885 and is the only club in the county to have won championships in every grade in both hurling and football. • D ungarvan is the sister city of Erie, Pennsylvania in the United States since March 2007. Erie is strategically located within 500 miles of half the nation’s population.

Founded by the Normans in 1185 and strengthened by King John in the early 1200’s the castle was totally refurbished by the Office of Public works and is now open from spring to autumn for visitors. ❖ DUNGARVAN TOWN HALL AND WATERFORD COUNTY MUSEUM Located at St. Augustine street the town hall dates from 1861 and today is used by Waterford County Museum to mount exhibitions of the towns history. ❖ THE OLD MARKET HOUSE Originally the building started life as a butter market in the late 1690’s and the area in front became a market place and a site for public executions. In 1868 the Market House was bought by a local businessman and used as offices and stores for his grocery and spirits concern. Located in lower Main Street the building was restored in 1984 and is today used as an exhibition space for local and national artists. Admission is free. ❖ AUGUSTINIAN PRIORY The well preserved ruins of the Augustinian Priory founded in the 13th century can be found in the towns eastern suburb of Abbeyside. ❖ THE LOOKOUT AND PARK Donated to the town in the last decade of the 19th century Lookout Park does exactly what the name suggests and takes its name from the wives and families of fishermen who would look out to sea from the esplanade and await the safe return of their loved ones. ❖ CLONEA STRAND BEACH Less than 2 miles from the town centre this 2 mile long strand of soft golden sand is one of the finest beaches on the south Irish coast and is swept clean daily at high tide .It is also a designated Blue Flag Beach and

For the angler Dungarvan is a virtual oasis. The rivers BLACKWATER and SUIR are nearby as well as the trout fishing in CAPPAGH LAKES. Deep sea fishing trips are available from Dungarvan Harbour. HENRY GILBY (well known international fishing celebrity and regular GOLD COAST HOTEL guest) spends a lot of time here in the locality fishing for Bass and that sums up the quantity and quality on offer.
