History of Wexford The history of the Talbot Hotel dates back as far as 1905, however this picturesque port town is steeped in medieval history dating back as far as 850. So let’s wander back to bygone times with some snippets of history we would like to share with you. In a country steeped in myth and legend Wexford's history is no exception. A story tells of its origin in the mists of time, when Garman Garbh was drowned on the mudflats by waters released by an Enchantress. The vast expanse of harbour thus created was named "The lake of Garman" or Loch Garman, the Gaelic name for Wexford. Wexford’s origins can be traced back to the Celtic tribes who moved westward across Europe and were attracted to the natural harbour on Ireland's south east coast. Christian heritage almost certainly predates that of the national apostle Patrick. It is said that the local people were converted to Christianity by St. Ibar on Begerin Island and he established a place of worship at Loch Garman. The Norsemen are accredited with introducing towns to Ireland, and Wexford was among the first dating back to the early 900's. Wexford’s Norse and Viking ancestry is frequently being proven by archaeological finds within the town. From marauding warriors, the Vikings became citizens and traders of early Wexford and their legacy includes
the narrow winding streets and the town's name, Wexford, derived from the Norse, Weissfiord – meaning” inlet of the mudflats”. In the Spring of 1169, the then prosperous town was taken by an invading force of Norman knights, who over the following centuries enclosed the town and regulated trade. The Normans built a stone wall around the town following the original Viking defences and extending it to encompass the area of Loch Garman. The wall had six gates and was 1.2 kilometres long. Wexford adopted the Norman way of life and received its town charter in 1418 from Aylmar De Valance. A large castle was built outside the wall. It served as the meeting place for local government. It also functioned as the court and prison. Among the many visitors to Wexford around this time was the English King, Henry II, reputed to have served penance at Selskar Abbey for the murder of Thomas a Beckett. The 1600's also brought a time of
suffering. Wexford became a chief naval base for the Confederate Government in its war with the Parliament Forces and this led to a massacre in 1649, when Wexford fell to the army of Oliver Cromwell. Following this disaster, the town was relatively calm for over a century, but in the hot summer of 1798, it exploded once more onto the stage of Irish history.
The Wexford Rising County Wexford saw the heaviest & most brutal fighting during the 1798 rebellion, with significant battles at Enniscorthy and New Ross .There are also numerous 1798 memorials scattered throughout the county. The famous ballad Boolavogue was written in remembrance of the Wexford Rising. The French Revolution was a big influence on many of the rebels who took part and many were also United Irishmen. A common weapon used by the Wexford rebels was the pike, made by local blacksmiths. One modification usually included was a hook, used primarily to cut a horse's reins. The Iron or Steel

country, but the war still managed to inflict suffering and death on the people. Although not part of that war, our merchant navy was to experience many attacks and some of our sailors paid the ultimate price in keeping Ireland fed. After the war, Wexford had mixed fortunes and emigration took its toll on the regions working populace.
spearhead was attached to a long wooden shaft made of Ash. The Rebellion in Wexford began on the evening of 26 May 1798. All through that night and the morning of 27 May 1798 several incidents took place. The Rebels were victorious at the Battle of Oulart Hill on 27 May 1798 and took Enniscorthy the next day. On 30 May 1798 the rebels defeated a British force on its way to reinforce the garrison at Wexford town at the Battle of Three Rocks. The Government and Loyalist forces at Wexford town panicked and almost the entire garrison fled avoiding the rebels, towards Duncannon Fort. The Rebels entered the town in triumph now almost the entire county was theirs. On 5 June 1798, the Rebels fought for ten hours at the Battle of New Ross, but failed to take the town. There was a huge loss of life and blood literally ran in the streets. And on 9 June 1798, Wexford Rebels, joined by Rebels from County Wicklow, were defeated at the Battle of Arklow. On 20 June 1798 a number of loyalists were piked to death on Wexford Bridge. The Rebels were defeated at the Battle of Vinegar Hill, 21 June 1798. That was the last major action in County Wexford. From those dark days of 1798, Wexford
Wexford Bridge (circa 1800)
entered an age of expansion. Trade increases led to the growth of industries ranging from whiskey distilling to the manufacture of agricultural machinery. The population grew steadily and many new streets were constructed, while in 1851, work began on the elegant twin Churches which were to dominate the skyline.
But Wexford’s cosmopolitan outlook, springing from mixed origins and seafaring traditions, made the town very attractive to international companies and to a growing tourist industry. To the narrow cobble stone streets came a president and expresidents. The American people presented the town with a statue of John Barry, a Wexford man deemed as founder of their navy. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, President of the U.S.A visited the county town of his ancestors, just months before his tragic death.
It was also in 1800's that many of today’s important buildings were constructed, St. Peters College in 1819 to the Mechanics Institute in 1849 and the Tate School now the Municipal Buildings, in 1867. The railway reached Wexford in 1870 and was continued along the quay front by 1882.
Wexford still exhibits impressive remnants of its vibrant past. Stretches of the town’s wall remain, as does the Westgate, the only survivor of the town’s six gates. Everywhere there are reminders of the past that made the town. The Bull Ring, the town’s market place, was named after the sport of bull baiting popular from 1641 to the end of the 18th century.
The great war of 1914-18 also left its mark on Wexford. Being still part of the British Empire at that time, thousands of her sons fought on land and sea, with many giving their lives in the struggle.
The pinnacle of the town’s cultural calendar is the Wexford Opera Festival held every year in late October.
An American Airbase was established at Wexford during this period. Its headquarters were located where the present day Ely Hospital is at the east end of Wexford Bridge. American airmen from the base patrolled St. Georges Channel to search out enemy U-boats.
Wexford’s colourful past is etched with brutal battles, its streets have been blood stained and lives have been lost for the honour of the town. Whether you are a keen history buff or you would just like to step back in time and see where it all began, there are many visitor centres and historical sites to see and visit both on foot and in the region.
After World War I there was little respite in warfare as our country entered a period of struggle for independence followed by a civil war. Throughout all of this Wexfordians played a part and the town continued to grow. The Second World War found Wexford part of a neutral
Today Wexford is renowned as the county’s main retail hub & thriving tourist hot spot, that proudly boasts a perfect mix of old world charm and cosmopolitan chic.
