Parallel, Action, Report, Essay Exploring contemporary art institutions

On November 24th 2013, fine art student Mike Ainsworth visited “Art Turning Left: How values changed making 1789-2013”, an exhibition documenting the development of leftist values in art from the French Revolution to the present day. Ainsworth visited this exhibition with the sole intention of finding out who sponsoring and funding TATE Liverpool for this exhibition. On all promotional material the only sponsoring body that was listed was Liverpool John Moores University, this was followed by “and a range of other supporters.”

My first attempt to find out the other supporters and sponsors of the exhibition was to ask the gallery staff at the ticket and information desk, the staff however were unsure of the answer and so passed on the email address of Eleanor Clayton, the exhibition’s curator. What follows is my email correspondence with TATE Liverpool to ascertain who was funding “Art Turning Left.”

After this initial line of enquiry with the international sponsors of the exhibition, i found through my research other recent connections that had been established between the UK, Denmark and Norway (the source information of which can be found overleaf.)

No further emails were received in this chain of correspondence. However, after a colleagues visit to TATE Liverpool in January 2014 i learned that between my own visit and my colleagues visit TATE Liverpool had made public the full list of sponsors for “Art Turning Left. And so my line of correspondence returned once again to Sarah Davies at TATE Liverpool to enquire why the gallery had since changed their advertising and publicity in the gallery.
