ABRAHAM BALDWIN AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE: LAB SCIENCES BUILDING

Spring 2015

IPG provided architectural design for a new 21,000 SF, 2-story collegiate laboratory science building. The new construction is comprised of (8) instructional spaces including: (2) general biology labs; (1) microbiology lab; (1) anatomy and physiology lab; (1) general chemistry lab; (1) organic chemistry lab; and (1) tissue culture lab. The building components, especially exterior brick and cast stone materials, are intended to solidify campus standards, draw references to existing historic precedent, and help establish the visual aesthetic for projects. Interior finishes are in the warm organic color range, and have been selected to be durable enough to withstand heavy class scheduling.

CURVE OF THE OAK: CONTEMPORARY HOME

Fall 2014

Existing in Porto, Portugal is a rowing club called Clube Fluvial Portuense. However, the context present challenges in terms of the transportation of the sculls from the building to the water. Currently, individual rowers and the team carry the sculls across the street and there is no adequate place for them to store the sculls on site. The site is located right against the water but it is a challenge as a site because of the extreme level change. The row-boat storage will be directly on the river by way of a pontoon flotation system. The concept and main driver of the Rowing Club is generated from creating a means and linkage to history of rowing in Porto and the rivalry that existed between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia by designing a hub for rivalry to be embraced and to celebrate the history of rowing in Porto.

THE STAGE (WORKING TITLE): DESIGN RESEARCH PROJECT

Spring 2017

A collaborative project with the Master of Architecture course at UWE Bristol. Michael Daley, Subarna Gurung, Dhaval Hasmuclal, Thomas Sale, students tutored by Jonathan Mosley. The Stage (Working Title) offered space for performance, gathering, idling and discussion. Following the idea of a performing architecture, the stage was conceived as a functioning and adaptable apparatus. Its elements were mobile and could be moved by performers and visitors alike. Configurations may create different territories, set up intimate or public spaces, enable informal social meeting or place all on view. Upon entering the gallery an individual or group may change the environment, thereby instigating interaction with others and raising the question, who and what is performing? The Stage (Working Title) was a Design Research project developed by four Master of Architecture students, Mike Daley, Subarna Gurung, Dhaval Hasmuclal and Thomas Sale tutored by Associate Professor Jonathan Mosley. Design research is a process of searching for answers to an explicit set of questions using design as the principle method. Each student is pursuing an individual investigation through the design of the installation whilst also collaborating on its overall form. As such the project is a composite piece of design research and a site of experimentation rather than a finishing point. The opening times of the gallery reflect the idea of a work-in-progress. Visitors were welcome to observe the construction of the stage, which took place from the 14th to 24th of February in Gallery 1. From 25th February to 26th March, visitors and artists were invited to explore the meaning of staging with the designed elements. People were free to contact the Arnolfini if they would like to use The Stage (Working Title) for a performance or a rehearsal in public.

PORTO REGATTA CLUB: ROWING CLUB & BOATHOUSE

Spring 2017

As part of the Conservation Unit, the sensitivity to the elements and context of Porto was a major consideration to the design and revitalisation of the site along the Rio Douro. There are a number of bridges linking city of Porto and the town of Vila Nova de Gaia, which drove the idea of creating a hub as ‘linkage’ to the existing rowing clubs within Porto. Linking also drives the concept with conservation because in order to revitalise the existing/runs, new elements have to be established. Therefore combining the old with new will carry the language of this link the hub creates with rowing clubs from the city of Porto and the town of Vila Nova de Gaia. The idea is to bring life to the site along Rio Douro by making it a welcoming point for regattas. Interventions on site will occur, which may cause some loss of value in cultural property but the site is derelict and not being use at the moment. Furthermore, in the book, Conservation of Historic Buildings, Bernard M. Feilden stated the changes made to a site in these conditions are justified in order to preserve the objects for the future.

FOCAL: RESIDENTIAL & DAYCARE CENTRE

Spring 2017

The site is located at the corner of 39th and E. Broad St. in Savannah Georgia. The existing structure originally was a supermarket. More importantly it was one of the first supermarkets in Savannah. This meant preserving the structure will be beneficial and significant. Also, the community that the site exist within is rich in culture and it would seem insensitive to disregard the community and the rich culture it offers. One of the characteristics found within the community was the arched roofs, which can bring the richness of the community to the proposed design. Another issue is creating openness and at the same time have a sense of defensible space. Creating openness will enhance the program for multi-generational living. The idea of diversity will be prominent and the openness of the design will be people of different backgrounds come together. The sense of defensible space is more aimed for the safety of the young ones in the daycare.
