Mares With More

Miss Meter Jet at Potter Ranch By Larry Thornton 0The pursuit of excellence and success is an ongoing process in any endeavor we pursue. This pursuit of excellence and success is especially important when our ability to keep competing is based on the money we win. Of course the rodeo pay window for those involved in this great American sport is the ultimate goal that leads to a World Championship. 0We need the best horse or horses we can find to get to that pay window and that world championship. When we find that horse, we want more of them. This leads us to ask the question: Are there more out there like this one, and if so how can we get them? Of course the first place we look is at the close relatives to the good horse or horses we are using. This takes us to our topic this month, a mare named Miss Meter Jet and how she has become one of our mares with more. 0Who is Miss Meter Jet? She is the dam of MP Meter My Hay or “Stingray” as she is known in WPRA barrel racing. Stingray is Sherry Cervi’s

Sherry riding her # 2 horse George at the 2010 Cheyenne Frontier Days where they won the 1st round. George represents the success Sherry and Mel Potter have had with the relatives of Troubles, the horse that started Sherry on her road to success as a barrel racer. Page 18

The story of Miss Meter Jet is also the story of when you can’t find any more like the one you own, you turn around and make some more just like the good one you have. 0The story begins with Sherry, the daughter of Mel and Wendy Potter. Sherry started her rodeo career involved in several events, but her true love was barrel racing. When Sherry decided to go all out for barrel racing she needed the right horse and that horse was named Sir Double Delight or “Troubles” as he is known in rodeo circles. Sherry made her first Wrangler National Finals Rodeo with Troubles in 1994. The Sherry Cervi biography on the WPRA’s website lists her as the 1994 Reserve World Champion. 0“Troubles came from Arizona and I had seen him run at some circuit rodeos and found out he was for sale,” Sherry recalls. “I tried him and got WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • January/February 2013

...and it definitely wasn’t a perfect match at the beginning. It was a little bit more of a struggle with him." Sherry Cervi along with him immediately. So I bought him and was very fortunate by being at the right place at the right time. “He had won some with a couple of different girls riding him,” she continues. “I was looking for a horse and wanted to be going to rodeos and you never know if a horse and rider will fit or get along, but he was really easy to ride. He loved being a barrel horse and he made it look real easy.” 0The next horse to come into the picture was Jet Royal Speed or “Hawk.” Hawk and Sherry won their first WPRA World Championship in barrel racing in 1995 and a second WPRA World Championship in barrel racing in 1999. They also won the presti-

gious Wrangler National Finals Rodeo average that year. 0“I had never seen him but I had heard about him and had heard that he would win first or get a no time,” Sherry says about Hawk. “It was Dad who actually saw him first. I was looking for a backup horse to Troubles and this was in 1994 and I was going a bunch trying to make the NFR. So I went and tried him and it definitely wasn’t a perfect match at the beginning. It was a little bit more of a struggle with him. He was a really good barrel horse and had all the right things for the two of us to get along but we were not as consistent so it took a little longer to get going and when I did we were a really good match.” 0In the pursuit of getting more

Lone Drifter is a Potter Ranch foundation sire and the sire of several foals out of Miss Meter Jet. of something good, Sherry and her Dad wanted more of Troubles and Hawk. Mel strongly believes that when you have a good horse you should try to get more of them and the best place to look is to the close relatives. So he went looking for more Hawks and Troubles. But they didn’t exist. So he went looking for mares that were closely related to the two geldings. His goal was to breed more of them. 0“I went looking for mares related to Hawk and Troubles and there were quite a few related to Troubles but not many to Hawk,” Mel says. “I bought five or six 1⁄2 to 7/8 sisters to Hawk. I bought Lay A Patch, the sire of these mares, and I got two fillies sired by him. He was pretty sterile when I got him and I actually got only two fillies and a colt. We kept the fillies.” 0Mel’s search for the Lay A Patch mares has been very successful. Rose Patch is an excellent example. This daughter of Page 19

“I tried everything in the world to buy her. I told him we could breed the mare and split the colts. Whatever he wanted to do I was willing to do." Mel Potter

Sherry and MP Peter My Hay at the 2009 WNFR, the year they were the WNFR Average Champions. Lay A Patch is the dam of MP Patches Of Hay by PC Frenchmans Hayday. Her ranch name is Lori. She has lifetime earnings of over $125,000 in roping and she is an NFR qualifier. MP Daysys N Roses is a full sister to Lori. She has earnings of over $100,000 with wins at rodeos such as the Houston Rodeo in 2010. 0Their full brother is MP A Man With Roses, or George as he is called. George is currently the number two barrel horse for Sherry. This gelding has earned over $60,000 through 2011. He was the Greg Olson Futurity Champion; he won the first go at the Cheyenne Frontier Days in 2010, and he set an arena record at the PacWest Barrel Race in 2011. He went 16.646 at the South Buckeye Equestrian Center on a Standard Pattern that was .003 seconds off the world record. 0But the bad news was that Mel found only one mare that was closely related to Hawk. She was a 3⁄4 sister and that was Miss Meter Jet. 0“When I found her she was owned by Gene Strickland of Page 20

West Valley City, Utah. He kept them in the backyard. He had two of them, her and a filly colt.,” mel relates. “I tried everything in the world to buy her. I told him we could breed the mare and split the colts. Whatever he wanted to do I was willing to do. I told him you keep the mare and we will ship the semen.” 0Mel finally got a deal worked out with Strickland: Mel could take the mare but Strickland

wouldn’t sell her to him. 0“We didn’t transfer her at first. I tried to get him to take money for her but he wouldn’t sell her outright. She had that colt that was like a two-year-old and he was getting ready to run her and he didn’t want to let the mare go and find out he had a world-beater. Well after several years I was finally able to get him to price the mare and she finally became out mare.” 0Miss Meter Jet is a 1985 mare. Her breeder is Kenneth B. Adams of Delta, Utah. Her official AQHA ownership record shows she had been owned by Lynn Rushton and Charles L. Clifford before Strickland bought her in 1996. She is officially unshown and unraced in the AQHA. She started

This mare, the filly she had when Mel found them, is also unshown and unraced in the AQHA. 0The sire of Miss Meter Jet is Bar Tonto Jet by Count Jet. Count Jet was the sire of Hawk. Barred was sired by Three Bars and out of Ready by Red Joe Of Arizona. Red Joe of Arizona was a 3â „4 brother to Joe Reed II, the sire of Leo. 0Count Jet was out of Sugar Comb by Sugar Bars. Sugar Comb was an AAAT/ROM racehorse. The AAAT rating would be equivalent to a speed index today of 100 or more. Sugar Comb is the dam of the ROM runners including Oil Maid AA and Oklahoma Jet SI-90. Oil Maid was the dam of the AQHA Champion Speedy Reb. 0The dam of Sugar Comb was Faysema by Leo. Faysema was the dam of Bar Face, Little Faysema and Tall Chief all ROM runners. Bar Face was a AAAT stakes winner and sire of many ROM runners and the AQHA Superior halter horse Drifting Bar. The mating of Jet Deck with Sugar

Chubby P-565 a prominent early sire. 0The dam of Bud Thomas was Babie Stalks by Stalks by John Wilkins by Peter McCue. Stalks was the sire of Roan Lady, the dam of Cowboy P-12. Cowboy P-12 was sired by Yellow Jacket. Cowboy P-12 was the sire of Shue Fly, the famous World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse. 0The dam of Doc Thomas was a mare sired by Keeno. Keeno was sired by Star Shoot and out of a Brown Steel Dust mare by Mose. John W. Zurick bred Keeno.. E. Mitchell & Sons of Albert, New Mexico, owned Keeno. 0The thoroughbred mare Calle O was sired by Russmor by Bostonian by Broomstick. The dam of Calle O was Gingham Way by Midway. The interesting thing about this part of the pedigree comes from Midway: Midway was the sire of Percentage, the sire of Three Bars. 0Miss Meter Jet was out of Miss Meter Charge. Miss Meter Charge was the dam of Hawk. This makes Hawk and Miss Meter Jet 3⁄4 brother and sister. Miss Meter Charge has no AQHA show or race record. She was bred and owned by Kenneth B. Adams of Delta, Utah. 0The sire of Miss Meter Charge was Royal Charge. Royal Charge was an AAA rated runner. He was the sire of Love Charge, the 1972 AQHA Racing Champion TwoYear-Old Gelding. The sire of Royal Charge was Depth Charge the AQHA Hall of Fame sire that produced such great horses as Johnny Dial. Johnny Dial was the sire of Auto Dial, the horse that got Wendy Potter many of Page 24

Shue Fly dominated quarter horse racing as the 194041, ‘41-‘42, ‘42-‘43 and ‘43-‘44 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse. her championship runs. He also started Jolynn Alexander (Mel and Wendy’s daughter) on her rodeo success. 0The dam of Royal Charge was the great World Champion Quarter Running Mare Shue Fly. Shue Fly dominated quarter horse racing as the 1940-41, ‘41-‘42, ‘42-‘43 and ‘43-‘44 World Champion Racing American Quarter Horse. She was also during these years the champion-racing mare. Shue Fly was sired by Cowboy P-12 and out of Lady Luck. 0The dam of Miss Meter Charge was Miss Meter Deck by Mr Meter. Mr Meter is an AAA rated son of Tonto Bars Hank, a former Champion Quarter Running Horse. The sire of Tonto Bars Hank is Tonto Bars Gill also a Champion Quarter Running Horse. Tonto Bars Gill is a full brother to Bar Tonto, the sire of Leap Bar, the dam of Bar Tonto Jet. This gives us a breeding pattern of 3 X 5 to the full brothers Bar Tonto and Tonto Bars Gill. 0Tonto Bars Gill was a proven sire in his own right with champions like Tonto Bars Hank and Miss Louton. Tonto Bar Hank was the 1960 All American Futurity winner, the 1960 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Colt and the 1961 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Colt. Miss Louton was the 1958

AQHA Racing Champion TwoYear-Old Filly, the 1959 AQHA Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Filly and the 1959 AQHA Racing Champion Mare. 0The dam of Mr Meter is Mary Ann Deck, a thoroughbred daughter of Top Deck. The dam of Mary Ann Deck is Los Philia by Los Molinos. Los Molinos is the broodmare sire of Bar Money, one of the first AQHA Supreme Champions. The dam of Los Philia was Philia by Mars by Man O’War. When you combine the Man O’War blood in Top Deck you get a 4 X 5 X 4 breeding pattern to this great stallion. 0The dam of Miss Meter Deck was Windy Tush by Tucson A, a full brother to Leo. They were sired by Joe Reed II by Joe Reed P-3 and out of Little Fanny by Joe Reed P-3. Tucson A was the sire of a number of racing and arena ROM. They include AQHA Champion Tucson Belle. He was the dam of the producing mare Thrifty Nell. She was the dam of the AAA rated stakes winner Tonto Thrift by Bar Tonto. 0The dam of Windy Tush was Windy Way, the dam of Leap Bar, the dam of Bar Tonto Jet. Thus Miss Meter Jet was 2 X 4 linebred to Windy Way as well as double bred to the full brothers Bar Tonto and Tonto Bars Gill. 0The mare Windy Tush was the dam of Captain’s Princess by Captain Dick. Captain’s Princess was the dam of Babalu by Humbaba (TB). Babalu was an ROM runner with a speed index of 100. Windy Tush is also the dam of Sue Sammy by Sam Dick. 10 foals with only one official AQHA performer. Let’s look at her foals. We will start with GS Chantily the 1998 daughter of Lowell D Royal by *Beduino. The interesting part of looking at this mare’s pedigree comes when we see the dam of Lowell D Royal. His dam is Camptown Girl by Breeze Bar and out of Miss Louton, the racing champion daughter of Tonto Bars Gill. This gives this mare a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 X 6 to Tonto Bars Gill and his full brother Bar Tonto. 0The next few foals out of Miss Meter Jet came after Mel had worked out an agreement with

Strickland. The first foal was MP Hawks Hayday (Harley) by PC Frenchman’s Hayday or Dinero as those that know him from his rodeo days call him. MP Hawks Hayday is a proven barrel horse with a second place in the Winter Barrel Blast 3D Jackpot in 2010. 0PC Frenchmans Hayday or Dinero is a significant part of the Potter breeding program. This palomino stallion has earned over $400,000 in the arena not only in barrel racing but also in heading and heeling. He has been a Wrangler WNFR qualifier barrel racing and heeling. Sherry finished third in the Wrangler NFR Barrel Racing standings riding this stallion in 2005. Cory Petska showed Dinero

to wins in events like the Mike Cervi Memorial Roping and the team roping at the famous Salinas Rodeo. He was voted the 2005 PRCA/AQHA third place heeling horse of the year with Cory in the saddle. 0The pedigree of Dinero is steeped in barrel racing history as the full brother to French Flash Hawk (Bozo). Bozo is a four time WPRA World Champion Barrel Racer and a five time AQHA/ PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. Dinero and Hawk are the product of the barrel-racing dynasty established by their sire Sun Frost and the mare Casey’s Charm (Continued on page 32)

Bardella is a full sister to Lightning Bar the sire of Doc Bar. This gives Doc’s Jack Frost a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Bardella and Lightning Bar. The dam of Sun Frost was Prissy Cline by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. The dam of Prissy Cline is Josephine El by Super Charge by Depth Charge. 0The sire of Casey’s Charm is Tiny Circus by Tiny Watch. The dam of Tiny Circus was Circus Bars by Willow Bars. The dam of Casey’s Charm is Casey’s Ladylove by Casey’s Poco by Poco Dun. The dam of Casey’s Ladylove was Lady Diane by Mc

Rusty. 0The next foal out of Miss Meter Jet is MP Wooden Jet. This 2001 gelding is a son of Lone Drifter, Mel Potter’s great Driftwood stallion. Lone Drifter was sired by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. The dam of Driftwood Ike was Hancock Belle by Buck by Chicaro (TB). The dam of Hancock Belle was Miss Hancock, a daughter of Joe Hancock. 0The dam of Lone Drifter is Moore Yen by Yendis by Top Deck. Top Deck was sired by Equestrian and out of River Boat by Chicaro (TB). The dam of Yendis is Sue Bob by Flying Bob by Chicaro (TB). The dam of Moore Yen was Katy Mas by Poquito Mas by Joe Moore. The dam of Katy Mas was Wayward Katy by Wayward Irving. The dam of Wayward Katy was Broken Foot

by Chicaro Bill by Chicaro (TB). Thus Lone Drifter is linebred Chicaro with a breeding pattern of 4 X 5 X 5 X 6. 0MP Wooden Jet or Harley as he is called was the Reserve Champion of the Diamond Run SS October 1D Barrel Race. Mel believes that this gelding is indicative of the success of the next foal out of Miss Meter Jet. Her name is MP Meter My Hay or Stingray. As Mel explains, “Sherry didn’t use this gelding ( Harley) very much and I feel that was because Stingray came along. He (Harley) was a good 1D horse, and still is, but Stingray was such a phenomenal horse that he got left behind because of her greatness.” 0MP Meter My Hay (Stingray) was foaled in 2002 and sired by PC Frenchmans Hayday (Dinero). Profile of a Horseman

Don Clark By Bobbi Finarty A conversation with Don Clark is an opportunity to learn about working horses, where the horse industry is headed and how to treat people. Clark—cowboy, cattle buyer and American Quarter Horse Association Director Emeritus from Ankeny, Iowa--has seen progress and growing pains as the horse industry has evolved. He has stood as a proponent of the performance horse and has helped lead the resurgence of ranch horse events. The show ring veteran is quick to credit fellow horsemen and good horses for his longevity and success as an exhibitor, judge and industry leader.

family moved to Cedar Heights, near Waterloo, in 1944. “We hauled that horse to Waterloo, Iowa, in a one-horse wooden trailer,” Don says. “Thirty-five miles per hour was the speed limit during the war because gas was rationed and tires were rationed. We blew a tire. It took three hours for us to go to the rationing board and get a tire for that trailer.î Upon graduation from Cedar Falls High School in 1945, Don was drafted into the United States Army. The war affected his entire family: Both of Don’s brothers and his brother-inlaw also served. After duties at Fort Riley in Kansas and Occupied Japan, Don returned to Iowa. The nation What Is Past Is Present was ready to have fun after Don Clark was born in the Depression and war era Sioux City, Iowa, the shortages. Horses were used youngest of Frank and Alice for recreation. Saddle clubs Clark’s four children. In and horse shows became 1935, his father transferred popular. to Kansas City for work. Don showed his first Growing up near St. Joseph, horse in 1947 at the Missouri, Don first learned National Dairy Cattle Don Clark believes the working ranch horse about horses from his father. He recalls buying a horse in better horse!” the Kansas City stockyards From that day, Clark but not having a way to get worked to better his skills as a showman and to her home. “I rode her across the 12th Street better his stock. A local industrialist, Robert C. viaduct,” Don says. “I had to ride her across the Wyth, played a critical role in Don’s development big bridge on the Missouri River and about 20 as a showman. Wyth had no experience with horses more miles.” but his daughter, Ellen, wanted to show. They met The mare made the move to Iowa when Don’s in 1953 and began a long partnership, eventually Page 42

forming Hobby Horse Stables. Wyth”s influence reached far beyond horse ownership. Don says of Wyth: “He was one of the greatest men I ever met. One of the things he taught me was that if you belong to an organization and you take from it, you give back.” What Makes A Good Horse Hasn't Changed In the years that followed, Don helped others as he found success in the show ring. He owned and showed multiple AQHA Champions and Register of Merit earners in reining, cutting, roping, western riding, western pleasure and halter. As a veteran AQHA and American Paint Horse Association judge, Don judged all of the major shows in the United States. His passion for working performance horses has persisted through horse industry changes. The biggest changes, according to Don, have been the quality of the horses, the way of going of the western pleasure horse, and the advent of the horse training profession. “I believe in the working horse,” Don says. “We still have the most versatile horse. He’s more specialized than he was in early times. There’s more money and equipment put into horses today.” Don believes there is a horse for every person, and that it is important to consider all levels of riders and all the ways to enjoy horses when discussing the industry’s future. What he sees as important to the future is rooted firmly in the tradition of the working ranch horse. What he looks for in a top performance

horse, regardless of discipline, hasn’t changed. “I want a balanced horse that is sound mentally and physically. He must be built to be sound and stay sound. He needs good feet. I start from the ground when I judge a horse,” he notes. Don is adamant that a horse should be bred to do his job and that the conformation of the horse should fit his function. “I make sure he has a wither and is deep in the heart. He needs good feet, correct legs and good hocks. I want his neck to come out fairly level and for him to be thin in the throatlatch. “A horse has to use his ears. I like a pretty head but I’m more concerned with the fixtures on it and function,” he continues. “The eye needs to be off to the side. He needs a nice, big nostril. He needs a good mouth and not be parrot-mouthed.î In Support of the Ranch Horse During decades of success in the show ring as a competitor and judge Don saw changes in the way performance horses were

being bred, developed and shown. He saw the trend and recognized the need to promote working horses with natural movement. For others who saw the same things, he became a spokesperson who knew how to take action. Don spearheaded a movement in Iowa that eventually grew to encompass the rest of the nation. He co-founded The Iowa Ranch Horse Association that began holding competitions in the late 1990s similar to Stock Horse of Texas Association shows. The grassroots shows incorporated classes for conformation, pleasure, reining, trail obstacles, roping and cattle herd work. Their popularity grew. Bill Horton, AQHA director and past president of the Iowa Quarter Horse Association, said, “To keep anything healthy, you have to keep part of the roots. Don’s vision for the ranch horse and ranch horse pleasureÖheís the one who pushed for that. A bunch of other people had the same thought.î “They want to have that experience with their horse,”

Clark qualified Aledo Cutter Leo for the AQHA World Championship Show in reining. They are shown here at Allison, Iowa, in 1980. Photo by Jacque Hodson.

Horton says. “It helps keep people involved.” People across the country became involved. Other states started similar associations. The AQHA initiated ranch horse versatility shows. Don Clark saw a new opportunity to feature the ranch horse’s natural, forwardmotion way of going. He contacted the AQHA with the idea of a new class, ranch horse pleasure. Don Treadway, AQHA Executive Vice President, recalls: “Don submitted it as a proposed new class. I encouraged him to send us more details. We would make sure the appropriate committee saw it.” Don talked to owners and exhibitors across the industry.

faded,” Treadway says. “He worked behind the scenes to gather support for it.” “ The class showcases the American Quarter Horse in its working clothes, so to speak,” Treadway adds. “It has been a very popular class. The first year it was only offered as an open class. The class got such great support that we’ll have it in youth and amateur divisions in 2013. We’re making it a class for all divisions.” One person can make a difference. Clark’s resumé shows an impressive list of accomplishments and years of service to equine organizations. Some of the positions he has held

The class moved through the approval process, with the AQHA naming its first ranch horse pleasure champion in 2012. “Donís perseverance never Page 44

him the Roy Low Memorial Award for years of service, and in 1991, he was inducted into the Knights of Columbus Hall of Fame for growth and promotion of the horse industry in the Waterloo, Iowa, area. The IQHA presented Clark with the Harley Terpstra Sportsmanship Award in 1995, the same year he was inducted into the Iowa State Fair Horsemen’s Hall of Fame. The Block and Bridle Horse Show honored him with a dedication in 1999, followed by another hall of fame induction in 2005, this time in the IQHA. In 2012, the Iowa Horse Council introduced Clark as its newest Hall of Fame member. The honors reflect Don’s priorities and how others appreciate them. He believes in the Golden Rule, good sportsmanship, thanking others for their deeds and kind words, and also the willingness to learn as well as to give free advice. “If we make a change, it should be for the betterment of the horse and the horse organization,” he states Horton offers two examples of Don’s initiative. “When I moved to Iowa and started showing horses here, Don Clark was the first person to come up and introduce himself and to welcome me,” he says. “When my wife went from the open shows to the Quarter Horse shows, he was the first person to welcome her. He’s just that kind of person.” Honors and awards are many, though Don prefers to give credit to others. He considers his most important roles to be husband to Continued on page 48

Beverly and father to his three children—Karen Watters, Barney Clark and Cathy Luett. He is also a proud supporter of two granddaughters who show horses, Shannon Gellespie and Dylana Luett. Good Horses and Good People “My dad used to say, ‘It don’t make any difference what color they are, how big they are, what breed they are. If theyíre a good horse, they’re a good horse, Don says. “And that goes for a person, too.’” Don is proud to have known many fine horsemen. “I canít list all of them—Jim Kiser, Stan Dreier, so many others,” Don says. He also showed against them, with friendly rivalries resulting. “Jack Brainard was ahead of all the rest of us. He started before us when he was in the service in Texas. He was an Iowa boy. When he came to a horse show, he was hard to beat.” And Don should know. He won his share of classes. He showed for other people but his most memorable horse was one he owned. Rusty Tequila was a 1960 palomino gelding he purchased from Stan Dreier. “He was just a doggone nice horse,” he says of the grandson of King. “He was the one I shouldn’t have sold.” Don and Rusty Tequila paired up to earn an AQHA Championship. “He was deadleaded, could stop and turn around, come backÖ. He was athletic enough to compete today. He was the ideal horse of my time,” he says. “I think he would be the ideal horse of this time. He was a natural. We did everything from western riding to pulling the Page 48

kids’ sleds on him.” Among other notable horses shown by Don were Wapsie Spud, another King-bred horse he showed to AQHA Champion status, and My Arizona. My

Clark sorts cattle at an Iowa Ranch Horse Association show on Stormys Peppy Rose in 2002. Photo by Cathy Luett. Arizona was an appendix mare who earned her ROM. He also rode Senora Sorrel in reining, a Phillips Ranch gelding who became a world champion for owner Pat Lemon. When Don decided to get back into reining after riding pleasure horses, he bought Aledo Cutter Leo.”He could run patterns. He could stop. He could spin. He could change leads. When it was all over, he’d lope off so nice,” Don says. The kind of horse that could do it all was the type Don loved. He purchased another such gelding named Tall Sox. Tall Sox earned points in reining, roping and cutting. “I believe in the all-around horse and that”s why I owned him,” he says. Future-focused Despite economic uncertainties, Don says. “Good horses are still going to bring

good money. We’ve bred too many horses for the times that have come upon us. There are still some good mares out there. We’ve got to have good mares. I believe the mare is the most important thing in the whole deal. The horse market will pick up if times get better.” Working horses are still in demand, according to Don. “I think there’s still a big place for that horse on the ranch, even though they’ve come with their four-wheelers and helicopters and such. But the horse is still a real important thing to them. “They like a good horse in the feedlots,” he points out. “There’s going to be a value for those kinds of horses, regardless. Even your trail riding market is very good if you’ve got a good, broke horse for people who just want to go and ride their horse.” As for his future, Don has goals. He purchased DLB Cheyenne Pepper, a 2002 mare that can work a cow. “I want to show my mare. She’s not for sale. I get up at five every morning and I do my chores. She’s part of getting me up. And, I want to stay as healthy as God will let me.” Don is optimistic about the future of the working horse industry. “There will always be value in and a place for working horses,” he says. “AQHA is trying very hard to promote the ranch horse. They feel that the horse is entitled to recognition in the show ring, that he’s the horse that built the association in the beginning. He’s an affordable horse. It goes back to our heritage. He made the West, and the West made him. I think there’s more for him to accomplish yet.”

Sunup Ranch, Part II

Evolution of a Breeding Program By Larry Thornton In the last issue we looked at the Sunup Ranch of Brainerd, Minn., with Barbara Kettlewell describing how she and husband Reed got started on the road to their AQHA Legacy Award. Barbara described how it all started with their foundation stallion, George Paul and his band of mares. Our look at this band of mares included EZ Dawson and the role she and the other mares played in founding this breeding program. To earn a legacy award, you must keep your breeding program evolving. Now, we will take a look at how the Sunup Ranch has evolved, producing a good American Horse / Sire / Dam Quarter Horse that is as pertinent today Owner / Address / Phone as it was 60 years ago. EYES An ongoing breeding program progresses by the ** LITTLE OF SMOKE Jim introduction of new blood. The next addition to the & Brenda Kropf . Wall Lake Sunup Ranch breeding program was a stallion bred Eyes of Smoke x Mr Gunsmoke on the King Ranch of Kingsville, Texas. His name jkropf@netins.net Gunsmoke was Gold xTee Mr Gunsmoke Bar Hitone. 712-664-2772 The Kettlewell’s daughter Vickie details Tee Bar Hitone's background. “Mom and Dad bought Tee Bar Hitone in Montana in 1959 from owner Robert Mosher. The horse had been bred on the King Ranch. When we bought him he had a show record, an ROM with points in reining and working cow horse. His sire was Rey Del Rancho and his dam was Nellie Laureles by Chapultepec by Old Sorrel, and she was out of a mare by Old Sorrel. “It was the natural progression of our breeding program that we needed an outcross for our George Paul mares,” Vickie continues, “and Tee Bar Hitone came into the Sunup Ranch breeding program as that outcross. I believe they were interested in King

Ranch horses and they were interested in the cow ability those horses provided. They liked the King Ranch breeding and he proved to be an excellent cross on the George Paul mares.” Tee Bar Hitone was the sire of 11-point earners that took in 105 AQHA points with three arena ROM. His leading point earner was Sugar Snip Rio. This mare earned six AQHA halter and 20 AQHA performance points. His second leading point earner was Rey Del Fancita with 15 open performance points. Rey Del Fancita was out of Fancy Georgia by George Paul and her dam was WR’s Sonny’s McCue by Question Mark’s Sonny, another one of the Sunup Ranch foundation mares. Vickie confided this about Tee Bar Hitone and the breeding program, “I think Mom regrets not keeping more of the Tee Bar horses and she wished she had a little more of that in the mare band.” Photo above: Star Eyed Jack was the first successful Two Eyed Jack sire for the Sunup Ranch. and All Eyes Jack, a gray whose dam was a daughter of Pat Star Jr. Her name was Badger Pat Star. We sold All Eyes Jack when he was four or five years old. Vickie tells about the initial impact of the Two Eyed Jack blood. “The Star Eyed Jack colts were an immediate sensation and I believe we were the

The next phase of the Sunup Ranch breeding program occurred about the time Reed Kettlewell became an AQHA Judge. “My father became an AQHA judge in about 1961 and this finds us progressing into the 60s,” Vickie explains. “He judged a two-year-old horse in Iowa by the name of Two Eyed Jack and he was so impressed with this horse that he couldn’t let the thought of that horse go. He knew Two Eyed Jack was destined for great things. “So their goal then became the blood of Two Eyed Jack for their program. In 1964 Mom and Dad made their first trip to the Pitzer Ranch. They were also interested in Pat Star Jr because of his Bert blood that tied in with George Paul.” (George Paul was sired by Bert P-227 and Pat Star Jr was out of a daughter of Bert P-227. Pat Star Jr was the broodmare sire of 20 of Two Eyed Jack’s AQHA Champions.) “We usually only went on a trip when my father was judging a horse show, but this trip was a little different,” she contiunes. “A big part of this trip was an attempt to find NR Jacci the mother of George Paul. She was owned by somebody in Nebraska. We made contact with the last owner of NR Jacci but she had died.” The next step was to actually add the blood of Two Eyed Jack. “It was about four years after visiting the Pitzer Ranch that my parents made a trip to purchase their first stallions by Two Eyed Jack. Those two horses were Star Eyed Jack whose dam was Hilda Pat Star

first to bring in a Two Eyed Jack stallion to Minnesota. Foals from the first foal crop of Star Eyed Jack won the get-of-sire class and the weanling filly class out of 50 fillies at the Minnesota Futurity that year.” Star Eyed Jack was the sire of horses like Eyes of Hitone, a 1987 AQHA World Championship Tie-Down Roping finalist with a sixth place finish. This horse is out of Berta Hitone by Tee Bar Hitone. He also has four AQHA amateur performance points. The next performer sired by Star Eyed Jack was Star Eyed George who earned his ROM with 11 performance points and 2 halter points. His dam was EZ Georgia by George Paul and out of EZ Dawson. The biggest point earner sired by Star Eyed Jack was Mighty Eyed Jack who was out of Mighty Sweet by George Paul. This horse earned 35 PHBA halter and performance points. Vickie recalls that one of the highlights of the trip was seeing the mare Hilda Pat Star. She was a leading dam at that point. As Vickie puts it, “She

Zan Parr Sun was the first of the Zan Parr Bar stallions and he was a contributor to this program until his death at the age of 30.

was a very potent mare.” She was the dam of several notable foals by Two Eyed Jack. They would include the Superior performers Hilda Jack, Jacks Hilda, Two Eyed Hilda and the World Champion Two Eyed Dandy. Hilda Pat Star was a successful show mare as well earning 16 AQHA halter points. “After they sold All Eyes Jack, Mom and Dad went back to dip into the Pitzer horses again and buy two more sons of Two Eyed Jack. One of them was Strawberry Jack a roan horse. His dam was Margie Star by Star Duster. The other one was Chocolate Jack and he was Star Eyed Jack’s full brother. Not only did they buy him because of the success of Star Eyed Jack but what my dad would have called an insurance policy on Star Eyed Jack and that explains why Star Eyed Jack was so important in our breeding program.” Vickie confides that Chocolate Jack “was a good sire just like his full brother and would probably have been as successful as his brother but wasn’t because he

Barbara and Chocolate Jack the full brother to Star Eyed Jack. He may have taken a back seat to his brother, but this photo shows he was a quality individual that was capable of making his own contribution. The leading point earner for Strawberry Jack was Mr Diablo Jack. This horse earned 12 open halter points, 2 open performance points, 17 amateur performance points and 10 youth performance points. He was out of Reina Sunup by Mister Sunup, a son of

When they were bringing mares, there was Star Eyed and Chocolate and it always seemed Star Eyed got elected.” It should be noted that the Kettlewells were very successful at picking their stallions, which is all the more interesting since many of the early stallions used in the program were weanlings when they purchased them.

George Paul and EZ Dawson. Strawberry Jack is the sire of two APHA Champions. They are Two Eyed Jacci and Strawberry Jag. Two Eyed Jacci has a phenomenal record: 965 performance points with 657 open performance points and 149 halter points with 87 open halter points, while earning several ROMs. She was a National Youth Champion, Youth Versatility Champion, the

1983 Youth National Reining Champion, a Reserve National Champion in Amateur Heading and Heeling and a Reserve National Champion in pleasure driving. She was the dam of Angel N Disguise, who was the 1989 APHA Open Reserve World Champion in heading and in 1993 was an APHA World Champion in team penning. Two Eyed Jacci is out of My Pretty Berta by George Paul and out of My Pretty Baby. “My dad was still judging in the 80s and we had accumulated daughters of the Two Eyed Jack horses on the George Paul and Tee Bar Hitone mares,” Vickie notes about the next phase of the program. “So we were looking for an outcross again.” Vickie reports that one source of this outcross blood came again from her father’s judging experience. “Zan Parr Bar was a horse that my father admired, both as a conformation horse and superior performance horse, a top athlete. To my father conformation was a study for him and he really looked for conformation perfection in horses. Zan Parr Bar really stood out for him, not only for his good conformation, but his performance as well. “Their thinking was to take the Zan Parr Bar on the Two Eyed Jack giving you the combination of the premier sires of the time. Two Eyed Jack had put together his great record as a sire and Zan Parr Bar was a threetime world champion at halter and then he and his offspring owned the working events like roping. To my parents Zan Parr Bar and Two Eyed Jack were the (Continued on page 74) Page 63

Spiritual Food From Gods Feed Truck Eyes and Feet Connection… One day as I was trying to help a young man to gain some experience in working with horses, I, as usual, will learn as much or more than he will. You see we were driving a young horse around at liberty to prepare it to be ridden. I was explaining to the young man what to watch for in the horse’s body and where he needed to position himself to achieve what he wanted the horse to do. I might as well have been speaking Chinese to him because he could not grasp at all what I was trying to teach him. Finally I said to him just watch the horse’s eye and see if you can see where this horse wants to go. To my surprise it wasn’t very long at all until this young man who had no prior experience and he also had a hard time paying any attention to instruction had become hooked into the thought process of this horse. When he focused on the horse’s eye, he was able to direct the horse’s feet where he wanted them to go and the young man was actually able to listen to me and get results from instruction. WOW!! You see in order to move a horse in any direction you have to first get him to look in that direction and when he does it is easy to get him to move his feet that way. If he is looking away from where you want him to go it is very hard to get his feet to move in the direction you want him to go. Scripture says in Matthew 6: 22-23, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. Romans 10:15: “And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” Psalm 3:3: “But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head. “To be able to do what I do and have her (Stingray) be that type of horse is really special.” Sherry Cervi pion Barrel Racing title in 2010. They were Houston Rodeo Barrel Racing Champion in 2010. They were the WNFR Reserve Average Champions in 2010 while setting an area record of 13.46 seconds in round eight. They came back in 2011 placing third in the end of the year standings. They won $93,000 at the 2011 WNFR. They won the 2011 Stratmore Barrel Racing Championship and the 2011 St. Paul Barrel Racing Championship. They finished 2011 as the CoChampion AQHA/PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. This mare has won $900,000 in her career and she is still Sherry’s number one horse. Going into the 2012 Wrangler NFR they were in fifth place in the standings for the year. At press time Sherry and Stingray had won the fourth round in the 2012 WNFR but a fall in the sixth took them out of contention for the average. Just listening to Sherry talk about Stingray tells you how important this mare is to this barrel racing champion. “You never know and you definitely have high hopes and she was athletic showing a lot of ability as a young horse. That was the Page 72

of a horse like her making you a part of all phases of her life.” The next foal for Miss Meter Jet was MP Nelle Wood foaled in 2003. This buckskin mare is sired by Lone Drifter making her a full sister to MP Wooden Jet (Harley). She was turned over to Cory Petska, but her show career was cut short by an injury and she has entered the broodmare band. Prior to her injury this mare had earned a fourth in the World Barrel Racing Final 2 D Jackpot. MP Jet To The Sun is the 2004 palomino stallion out of Miss Meter Jet and sired by Sun Frost. This is the colt that Mel sold in his sale in 2007 to David James. “We had two horse colts that year by Sun Frost,” mel says explaining why they sold the colt. “One out of Miss Meter Jet and one out of a mare we called Luna. Luna’s colt was a sorrel and we have so much color in our broodmares so I kept the sorrel and sold the palomino. But we lost the sorrel with an intestinal problem. He was a really nice colt. These were two of the last colts born before Sun Frost died.” MP Jet To The Sun is the only AQHA performer out of Miss Meter Jet. He has earned 11 AQHA

performance points and is ROM. Miss Meter Jet went back to Lone Drifter to produce MP Jetwood or Bentley as he is called. Mel reported that Sherry and Bentley were at a rodeo as we spoke. She is still seasoning this gelding. MP Del Rey is the 2008 foal out of Miss Meter Jet and he was sired by Dinero. “We don’t hardly ever do much on them before they are three,” Mel says about their training program. “When they are three we start roping on them. Then at the end of their threeyear-old year Sheri starts them on the barrels and then as a fouryear-old starts hauling them. She hauled Del Rey last year. I think Del Rey could be another Stingray.” The last two foals out of Miss Meter Jet hold a lot of promise for Sherry and Mel. They are both daughters of Dinero. They are MP Keep The Change and MP Jet Royal Money. They are in the early stages of training but they are full sisters to Stingray. When you talk to Mel you get the impression he would still like to find more close relatives to Hawk and Miss Meter Jet. But when you look at what this mare has done by producing Stingray, you realize she has done well for them. When we take inventory and see that Stingray is not alone with several 1⁄2 and full sisters and brothers, we can feel comfortable that our Mare with More, Miss Meter Jet, is just getting started. It is the beginning of a new family of barrel racing champions.

in the pasture like the foals from the Two Eyed Jack stallions. They would not trust you when you first started handling them. They just didn’t want to be friendly and as soon as you won there trust they were excellent horses. It didn’t take much to do that but they just weren’t friendly in the beginning like the Two Eyed Jack horses. “But they were wonderful to work with after you won that trust. We would get a lot of feedback on the Zan horses on once they won that trust they were there. The Two Eyed Jack would be right up there with you from the beginning. They liked people.” The Sunup Ranch’s Zan Parr Bar/Two Eyed Jack has made an interesting contribution to the western pleasure show ring. Zips Amber Oaks is a mare by Seven S Flashyzipper. This mare has won five PHBA World Championships in Western Pleasure including the 1999 PHBA World Championship in the Four-Year-Old Western Pleasure Maturity; 2003 PHBA Open World Championship in Senior Western Pleasure and the

dam of Georgetta Jack is Dawsons Memory by George Paul and out of EZ Dawson by Wimpy II. “She really combines the arch of our breeding program... George Paul to Chocolate Jack to Zan Parr Sun,” Vickie points out. “Comparing the Zan progeny with the Two Eyed Jack we found the Zan progeny to be very business like horses,” Vickie says. “They have a good work ethic. They were not colts that would Sunup’s Misty Star with Greg Booth at the Region walk up to you Three Experience.

1999 PHBA Open World Championship in Junior Western Pleasure Horse. This mare is out of Zan Parr Diamond by Zan Parr Sun. Zan Parr Diamond is out of All Pretty Dark by Star Eyed Jack. The dam of All Pretty Dark is Rancho Pretty by Rancho Sunup by Tee Bar Hitone. The dam of Rancho Sunup is Paula George by George Paul and she is out of EZ Dawson. The dam of Rancho Pretty is My Pretty Baby by Bert P-227 another Sunup Ranch mare. Speaking of the life and death of the two Zan Parr Bar stallions, Vickie says,“I believe we were the first to stand Zan Parr Bar horses in Minnesota and Zan Parr Sun died last year at the age of 30. He sired his last foal in 2010, a filly. He was a sound horse and never sick in his life. We lost Saturday Night Line at the age of 21.”

Another stallion, Heza Peponita came to Sunup as a yearling. “We purchased Heza Peponita about the same time we bought Saturday Night Line. His breeder was Dennis Skeeter in Aledo Texas. But we bought him as a from Lloyd and Naomi Geweke of Ord, Nebraska.” “After we purchased Saturday we were driving down the road and saw this good-looking bay horse,” adds Barbara Kettlewell. “So we went and inquired and that was Heza Peponita. He proved to be quite a sire as time went by.” This yearling colt had an interesting pedigree. The Sunup Ranch started using the King Ranch blood of Old Sorrel in the beginning. EZ Dawson being sired by the King Ranch stallion Wimpy II. This was followed by Tee Bar Hitone, a King Ranch

bred stallion. Heza Peponita follows along with that trend as his pedigree was influenced by the King Ranch. The sire of Heza Peponita was Matlock Rose’s great cutter Peponita by Peppy San. Of course Peppy San gets his King Ranch blood from his dam Peppy Belle who was sired by Pep Up, a King Ranch bred stallion. The dam of Peponita and was Bonita Tivio who was out of Pepper Girl, a King Ranch bred mares. On the dam side of the pedigree was Kleberg Mia a King Ranch bred mare. So by introducing Heza Peponita to the breeding program they were infusing more King Ranch blood. Vickie recalls that at one point prior to this they wanted to introduce some more Pitzer blood. “In the late 70s we bought a Watch Joe Jack stallion named

Tee Bar Hitone was the first major outcross stallion for the Sunup Ranch. He was King Ranch bred and an important sire for the Sunup Ranch. Watch Tyree. We bought him as a baby. His dam was the Ima Tyree mare. He’s buckskin and he is a little different stature as a horse that stands 15 3. He looks a lot like Watch Joe and Ima Tyree and we actually got the Watch Joe horse before the Zan Parr Bar horses.” The Watch Joe Jack/Ima Tyree cross is a hallmark cross within the Two Eyed Jack family. Watch Joe Jack was a most successful son of Two Eyed Jack. He earned 201 AQHA performance points in western pleasure and 225 AQHA halter points. He became an AQHA Champion with Superiors in western pleasure and halter. He was a successful sire with foals like Watch Joe Leo Bar, the 1981 AQHA World Champion Senior Working Cow Horse. The dam of Watch Joe Jack was Watch Jo Moore by Joe M Moore who was sired by Monsieur Joe. Monsieur Joe was sired by Red Star Joe by Little Jodie. Little Jodie was out of Dixie Beach. The dam of Monsieur Joe was Westmorland, a daughter of Bert P-227, giving the cross two crosses to the full sisters Dixie Beach and Lady Coolidge. Lady Coolidge was the dam of Bert P-227. Ima Tyree was a daughter of Harlan’s Tyree by Harlan. Harlan was a son of Hank H and Dixie Beach the full sister to Lady Coolidge, the dam of Bert P-227. Ima Tyree was the dam of 16 foals and six of them were performers. The first performer out of this Page 77

mare was Two Eyed Tyree by Two Eyed Jack. This gelding was an AQHA Superior halter and steer roping horse. He was an AQHA Champion. The mating of Watch Joe Jack and Ima Tyree gave the industry Watch Jo Tyree, another AQHA Champion with a Superior in team roping heading and halter. A third performer out of Ima Tyree was Two Eyed Red Buck by Mr Baron Red. This great show stallion earned 291 AQHA points in halter and performance with an AQHA Championship. He was also Superior in heading and heeling. Thus the move to bring in the Watch Joe Jack/Ima Tyree cross for the program worked out very well. “Watch Tyree immediately excels as a sire. He sires excellence as a halter sire. He even gets a couple of superior ha,” Vickie says. But he died at the age of 10 from colic.” The two halter horses that earned superiors were Tyrees Tuffy and Ima Petite Lady. Tyrees Tuffy earned his youth superior in halter with 62.5 points. He earned an additional 33.5 open halter points and 11 youth halter points. He was a 1990 AQHA ninth place Top Ten High Point Halter Gelding. Ima Petite Lady earned her superior in youth halter with 58.5 points. She also earned 18.5 open halter points and 1 open performance point. She was the fifth place finisher in the 1989

Vickie explains the circumstanced around replacing Watch Tyree, “In 1983 Dad has his first heart attack. So that sets him back. Then in 1986 Dad passed away running a 10k race from a heart attack. Mom picked up the reins and carried on. She had about 10 or 12 stallions on hand at that time. “ Then just as Watch Tyree was becoming important in the breeding program, he died “So mom and I were determined to get another one. So in 1989 we get Watch Tyree Two. He is the last horse in the cross of Watch Joe Jack/Ima Tyree. “Watch Tyree Two is still on the ranch and is still siring,” she continues. “We have promoted him as one (Continued on page 81)

The dam of Tuff Doll Cash was Dinky Doll Cash another Wiescamp bred mare. Page 78

Hetletved Quarter Horsesí celebrated their 15th annual production sale by returning to the basics. Fifteen years ago, the Hetletved family worked together as a family to bring their foals to the market to offer the foundation pedigree that the family had researched and worked toward. On August 19, 2012, the family brought the most even set of 37 foals to be offered to the public yet. These foals went to eight different states as well as two different Canadian locations. stallion named Playboy R Peppy. Watch Tyree Two has cemented his own contribution to the program by taking up where his full brother left off. He is the proven senior sire of the program. Sunups Starwatch is a son of senior sire Watch Tyree Two. This stallion also keeps the influence of the original George Paul and EZ Dawson close up in the program. His broodmare sire is Star Eyed Jack and his second dam is EZ Georgia by George Paul and out of EZ Dawson. He is a proven performer with his ROM and 16 AQHA performance points. He has been shown in halter, heading, heeling, calf roping and versatility ranch horse. He was the 2002 MQHA Reserve Champion Aged Stallion. Zans Tyree Drifter as a son of Zan Parr Sun represents the continuation of the Zan Parr Bar line on this stallion roster. In turn he is out of a daughter of Watch Tyree. His dam is Rita Driftwood by Country Driftwood. Country Driftwood was a stallion used in the program to bring in the blood of the great Driftwood to the Sunup Ranch. He was sired by Country Hank and out of an Orphan Drift mare. His dam Rita Driftwood was out of Wimperita by George Paul and out of EZ Dawson. Watch Red Sunup introduces the blood of Mr Baron Red, the AQHA World Show Super Horse and foundation sire for the current Pitzer Ranch breeding program to the Sunup Ranch. His dam Watch Jo Peggy is a daughter of Watch Joe Jack and her dam is Ricks Peggy, a granddaughter of Showdown by Wimpy P-1. This stallion’s career was hampered by EPM but is now proving to be

a good sire in the tradition of the Sunup Ranch founding sires. He is owned by Greg and Vickie. The Sunup Ranch is always looking for outcross blood. Currently they stand a stallion named Playboys R Peppy, an outcross son of Freckles Playboy. This stallion is an NCHA Super Stakes Open Finalist and winner of $14,000 in cutting. His dam is a King Ranch bred mare that is sired by Peppy San Badger and she is out of Carlos Jean by the El Carlos by Rey Del Rancho, the sire of Tee Bar Hitone, giving this stallation a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 to Rey Del Rancho. The other Rey Del Rancho line of this stallion comes from Rey Jay, the broodmare sire of Freckles Playboy. “The next big step here at Sunup Ranch is finding that next young stallion and hopefully that will involve all three of us, Mom, Greg and me,” Vickies says.“Mom still knows a good horse when she sees one.” So what more could you expect from an AQHA Legacy Award winning ranch that has also been slated to be a participant in the inaugural AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders Program.
