Equine Discussions With Cal Middleton

5 Common Myths and Misconceptions about Horses 1. A horse should always be worked equally on both sides.

False

When working a horse on the ground as well as when riding, the goal is to get a horse balanced and even. In order to accomplish this, it is often necessary to work one side of a horse much more than the other. There are also times when we work the horse on one side in a totally different manner than we work the other side. This is often how we achieve the overall idea of straightness and equality in a horse.

2. Horses do not need to lie down to sleep. False Most of us have seen horses stand and doze off to sleep, but research shows that for a horse to get the required REM sleep, they must be lying down during this phase. Their required amount of sleep doesn't have to happen all at once. It can happen in many different intervals. If horses do not get a chance to lie down often enough, their body starts to try to force the REM sleep while they are standing and dozing. This can cause serious long term damage both mentally and physically, as the horse's body can not properly handle REM without lying down.

3. Horses that pull back need to stand tied until they learn to stop pulling back. False Horses that have a habit of pulling back need to learn to yield their feet to pressure. This needs to be done in many forms but mainly by taking a few wraps around a post or top rail

of a solid fence (not tied solid). Then move the horse with a flag or rope to get the horse to give hind end and front end, all four feet in sequence, without locking up and getting tight. Some correct ground work can also help. During this learning phase, a horse should never be given a chance to have something solid to brace against. A horse should never be tied up until they have been properly taught to give their feet in this manner.

4. A rider's hands should stay in a small area, and the rider's elbows should never pass behind the ribcage. False Actually keeping our hands and arms in a locked position can cause numerous problems. It is absolutely necessary to move our hands and arms independently from our body at times. There is a time to lift our hands up high, put our hands wide, put them low, and, most importantly, there is a time to bring our hands back to our ribcage as our elbows pass behind our ribcage. Learning why, how and when to use our hands in these positions to direct the horse's feet is what is important.

a good idea. But routine lunging, especially for the purpose of “getting the fresh off” or bringing the horse’s energy down can ultimately create a very confused, tight and unsafe horse. The goal each day should be to prepare the horse mentally to accept the pressure we apply in order to willingly move his feet and relax.

There is more information like this in my new book. Check out www. calmiddleton.com or contact me directly to get your first edition copy. 816-256-9597. And as always, send your questions to cal@calmiddleton. com.

5. Always lunge a horse to lower the energy to a safe level before riding. False Lunging a horse is often one of the worst things that we can do to a horse's body and mind. The more they are lunged, the worse they usually get, long term, and the more potential soundness issues they may have. Some ground work is often necessary and free turn out is always

Training The Performance Horse Part 3

Expanding Your Scope of Training By Al Dunning If you have read and applied my initial articles on starting and progressing your horse, you are now prepared to advance. I always start with a plan to improve my horse’s weaknesses. Those may involve something he is not understanding, reintegrating a past educational ride, or merely working on him being more responsive to cues. To advance my horse, I’m riding him in a smooth snaffle and a running martingale. After several minutes of warm-up that includes walking, jogging, extending the jog, bending, backing and circles, he is prepared for the next chapter in his education. For this ride I will begin with #1 of my basics – “go forward readily”. My goal is to have my horse walk forward with a small amount of leg pressure. I begin by using one rein (right) and pressing my right leg. This is intended to bend him, round his inside, and move his hip to the outside. This should contain his forward motion while teaching him to move off leg cues. Have some movement and feel with your direct rein and avoid pulling too firmly. I don’t wear spurs initially as not to frighten him or get him to overreact. I would rather kick him or swat him with my rein if he is not responsive. My cues are in this sequence: 1 - bump him with my calf 2 - use my heel 3 - cluck or smooch 4 - bump harder, 5 - tap with the end of the rein on

the same side as my leg cue. Work in that order as necessary to get movement. Use as little pressure as possible but as much as necessary to derive the required response. When this is accomplished on both sides at the walk, you can repeat this drill advancing to the jog. In the early stages of training, it is not necessary to lope or gallop much. It is more important that we get a willing forward motion at the walk and jog with overall control. By varying your speed you are working on the horse’s ability to rate his impulsion for better control. At this point, my objective is a horse that is under control, steers, bends and stays relaxed while going forward.

I have always thought that making forward circles is a precursor to teaching my horse to go straight while staying between my reins and legs. Each ride should end with both horse and rider thinking in a positive way. If you are having any troubles, use this four letter word: STOP. Take some time to think through what’s happening and make a plan so you and your horse both win. Don’t create defense mechanisms in your horse by getting rough or frustrated. If each ride is a positive experience for your horse, he will learn at a more rapid rate. Ride Well and Be Happy.

My next few rides integrate this drill to continue leg cue education. Your thinking process should be my leg is “my accelerator and my rein directs his front end.” The next step is to use the “1-2-3 method.” After years of training, I have found it easy to communicate with my horse by using this method. I direct the nose to indicate a step forward with direction. By adding the outside rein I am encouraging the shoulder to follow the nose. Third, add your outside leg which ignites the rib and hip to follow the already moving nose and shoulder. That sequence is the first step in the process of getting him to follow his nose with the rest of his body in a smooth turn. It will ultimately be the start of a smooth rollback or turnaround.

Al Dunning has been a professional trainer since 1970 at his Almosta Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ. His career includes 45 World Championships and Reserve World Championships through the National Reining Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association In 1996, Dunning was named the AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year. www.aldunning.com

Working Lines By Larry Thornton When Doc Bar became a sire of performance horses in the late 1960s and early ‘70s there were several established bloodlines already in place in the cutting horse scene. These established bloodlines were headed by the blood of King P-234. When mares carrying the blood of King were mated with Doc Bar, they produced many fine cutting horses,

Fizzabar. This great mare spent time as a reined cow horse and then became a noted cutting horse, named to the NCHA Hall of Fame. The success of Fizzabar started a trend to use Doc Bar as a sire of cutting horses, but she also demonstrated the versatility of this line of horses as a reined cow horse. Fizzabar was a full sister to our

Poco Lena was a granddaughter of King P-234. One of the first successful crosses of Doc Bar on King bred mares came with daughters of Poco Tivio. Poco Tivio was a full brother to Poco Lena. This is the cross that produced

“Working Lines” subject Doc’s Remedy, a standard bearer for the versatility of the Doc Bar horses. The story of Doc’s Remedy begins with his breeder Arnold Dolcini of Petaluma, CA. Dolcini owned Teresa Tivio, the dam of Doc’s Remedy and Fizzabar. It didn’t take long for Dolcini to sell Doc’s Remedy- he was bought by Jim Page the night before he was born. When the time came, Page sent

might just be the strongest set of finalists to ever go through Will Rogers Coliseum: Colonel Freckles, Freckles Playboy, Doc’s Becky, Doc’s Oak, Doc Athena, Doc’s Steady Date, Bardoc 0’Lena, Tip It San, Montana Doc and Honey B Isle. Doc’s Oak tied with Doc’s Remedy for fourth in the finals. Ward described the performance ability of Doc’s Remedy in an unusual way: “This sounds terrible but this friend of mine said, ‘You know, he looks like a fighting rooster just before he rears up. His neck swells up.’ I’ve had others tell me that too. He wanted a cow to move so bad, his neck would swell up. His head was about a foot off the ground. I had one guy say he puts his head so low that he has to look up at the cow. It wasn't anything I did; it was all natural. God did it. He craved cattle all the time.”

first in his class 12 times, with nine Grand Championships and one Reserve Grand Championship. He earned 36 halter points. His Grand Championships include the famed San Francisco Cow Palace. The first offspring of Doc Bar indicated his ability to sire conformation. He sired nine AQHA Superior Halter Horses. His top halter horses included Barlet, Grand Champion at shows like the Cow Palace; Doc’s Lesa Bar, a PCQHA Halter Futurity Supreme Champion, and Janie Bar, an AQHA Superior Halter Mare and a PCQHA high point halter mare. Doc Bar won the San Francisco Cow Palace Get of Sire Class three consecutive years.

Doc Bar produced many great performers despite his inability to perform. His AQHA record shows that he sired 118 ROM, 27 AQHA Champions and five AQHA World Champions that earned eight World Championships in the youth and open divisions. He sired 18 AQHA Superior performance horses in eight events. His NCHA get record includes four NCHA Futurity Champions, one NCHA Futurity Non-Pro Champion, four NCHA Derby Champions and three NCHA World Champions. Doc’s Remedy retired from cutting with over $47,000 in earnings. He went on from the Futurity to be an NCHA Derby Finalist and NCHA Bronze Award winner. She was a youth and open AQHA Champion. Dandy Doll was sired by Texas Dandy by My Texas Dandy. The sire of My Texas Dandy was Porte Drapeau and his dam was Sadie H. Sadie H was sired by Little Dick and some pedigrees show her dam to be a mare by Porte Drapeau. This would make My Texas Dandy double bred to Porte Drapeau, a thoroughbred.

Famous sire Doc Bar later in his life. Photo courtesy Jim Walker an AQHA Championship. He was AAA rated on the racetrack and was stakes placed in the S. H. Beaudry Handicap and the Juvenile Prep at Rillito. An injury ended his race career. Lightning Bar earned 18 points in the halter arena. He was also shown in a jackpot roping and won. Lightning Bar was sired by Three Bars. Three Bars has proven to be one of the most influential sires, if not the most important sire, in the development of the modern quarter horse. His foals became contributors in all phases of the quarter horse industry including racing, halter and performance. Three Bars was sired by Percentage and his dam was Myrtle Dee. Her sire was Luke McLuke. The dam of Myrtle Dee was Civil Maid by Patriot. The dam of Lightning Bar was Della P who is registered as sired by Doc Horn out of a daughter of Old D. J. Della P was a Cajun-bred running horse from Louisiana. But Art Pollard reported in an interview a few years ago that they really didn't know if her pedigree was correct. The late Lloyd Gary researched the

history of the Cajun-bred running horse. Gary believed that the sire of Della P was Louisiana Henry or, as some call him, The Dun Horse. Gary based his belief on an interview he did with Claude Morien, the breeder of the dam of Go Man Go. Gary credits the error to the fact that Della P had a sister sired by Doc Horn.

[Jim] Ward used to gallop Johnny Tivio for the famous trainer Harry Rose. Ward labeled this show stallion the “greatest” reined cow horse he had ever seen. Dandy Doll was the dam of Doc Bar. She was an AA rated runner on the track. The produce record of Dandy Doll shows that Doc Bar was no fluke, especially as a halter horse. This mare is the dam of 11 foals with nine performers including Bobbibar

“The Legends Vol. II” story on My Texas Dandy, written by Jim Goodhue, says the dam of Sadie is a mare named Nellie by a thoroughbred named Panmure. Streak was the dam of Texas Dandy. Her sire was Lone Star and her dam was a Cap Mare. Lone Star was sired by Gold Enamel, a thoroughbred. The dam of Dandy Doll was Bar Maid F by Bartender II. Bartender II was sired by the thoroughbred Lawyer and his dam was Lundy. Lawyer was sired by Tryster and his dam was Entanglement by *Rire aux Larmes. According to the AQHA Stud Book, Lundy was by Ace Of Hearts. The dam of Bar Maid F was Nelly Bly. Nelly Bly was sired by Red Joe Of Arizona. Red Joe Of Arizona was sired by Joe Reed P-3 and his dam was Little Red Nell. Little Red Nell was sired by Brown Billy by Old Billy and her dam was Red Nell by Texas Chief by Lock’s Rondo. This makes Red Joe Of Arizona a threequarter brother to Joe Reed II. The dam of Nelly Bly was Topsy by Gringo. Topsy was out of Evelyn by Joe Blair II. An interesting side note on Nelly Bly: Joe Reed P-3 (the sire of Red Joe Of Arizona) was sired by Joe

Blair, the famous thoroughbred race horse. If Joe Blair II (the sire of Evelyn) was sired by Joe Blair or a descendant of Joe Blair, then Nelly Bly would be double bred to Joe Blair. Teresa Tivio was the dam of Doc’s Remedy and Fizzabar. The breeder of Teresa Tivio was Leon C. Saylors of Marysville, CA. Her sire was the AQHA Champion Poco Tivio. His points came in cutting and halter. He was an NCHA Top Ten Finalist in 1951 and 1952. Don Dodge brought Poco Tivio to California and then later sold the horse to Charley Araujo. Poco Tivio sired such noted horses as Johnny Tivio. Ward used to gallop Johnny Tivio for the famous trainer Harry Rose. Ward labeled this show stallion the “greatest” reined cow horse he had ever seen. Poco Tivio was sired by Poco Bueno. Poco Bueno was an AQHA Champion. He was a great show horse before they kept track of points in the AQHA and when the point system was started, he earned his AQHA Championship. Poco Bueno, Poco Lena and Poco Tivio were among the first AQHA Champions named when the AQHA started the point and award system we have today. Poco Bueno was sired by the great stallion King P-234. The dam of Poco Bueno was Miss Taylor by (Old), Poco Bueno. The (Old) Poco Bueno was sired by Little Joe. Little Joe was the sire of Zantanon, the sire of King P-234. This makes Poco Bueno 3 X 3 linebred to Little Joe. The dam of Miss Taylor was the Eads Mare by Hickory Bill. Sheilwin was the dam of Poco Tivio. This mare has become a legend as the dam of not only Poco Tivio but Poco Lena, the first horse inducted into the NCHA Hall of Fame, and

Saylor’s Little Sue was bred by King Merritt of Federal, WY. Saylor’s Little Sue was bred to Poco Tivio while Dodge still owned him. Saylor’s Little Sue was sired by Black Hawk. Black Hawk was sired by San Siemon by Zantanon. This makes Teresa Tivio 4 X 4 linebred to Zantanon and 5 X 5 X 5 linebred to Little Joe. San Siemon was out of Panita, a daughter of Possum. Possum was sired by Little Joe and out of Jenny. This makes Possum a full brother to Little Joe.

Sue Hunt was the dam of Continental King and San Sue Darks was the dam of Leo San. Sue was the dam of Saylor’s Little Sue. The sire of Sue was Monte, a thoroughbred, and her dam was a mare by Magic, another thoroughbred. In the mating of Doc Bar with the Poco Tivio mares, Charley Araujo was often the common denominator in bringing these two bloodlines together. With Doc Bar and Teresa Tivio, Arnold Dolcini was the common denominator. He is the breeder that bought Teresa Tivio and then sent her to Doc Bar for 10 foals. The foals by Doc Bar and out of Teresa Tivio are Fizzabar, Cattabar, Cuttabar, Cal Bar, Cran Bar, Doc’s Haida, Nu Bar, Boon Bar, Doc’s

Remedy and Doc Bar Gem. Mike Boardman, a pedigree analyst, describes why the Doc Bar/Teresa Tivio cross was so great: “This family is the most versatile horses I’ve come across. They not only can cut and rein, they can work cows. They're all good. They shine with people who know how to ride them and I think Greg Ward was a master on them.”

Fizzabar demonstrates the versatility of this family of horses that Boardman was talking about. She was the 1964 California Reined Cow Horse Hackamore Champion. She earned this title by earning a record number of points for a reined cow horse in one year. An ad on Doc Bar called this mare “The Unbeatable” in the reined cow horse event. When Fizzabar was bought by the Douglas Lake Cattle Company, Don Dodge turned her into an NCHA Hall of Fame cutter. She was in the NCHA Top Ten from 1967 to 1970 and again in 1973. She was the NCHA World Champion Cutting Mare in 1968. She was also ridden by Leon Harrel and Gene Suiter in the cutting pen. Cal Bar is the next major performer in this group. He was the 1970 California Reined Cow Horse Hackamore Champion. Cal Bar was bought by Peter Mattioli and turned over to Larry Reeder. Reeder and Cal Bar finished fifth in the 1974 NCHA World Championship Top Ten. Cal Bar has proven to be a good sire as well with foals like Snapper Cal Bar, the 1984 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion. Snapper Cal Bar is the sire of Master Snapper, the 2006 NRHA Open Derby Champion. Cal Bar is also the broodmare sire of the World Champion Pleasure Stallion Impulsions. Doc’s Haida comes next in this line of competitors. She was purchased by Norman Bruce. This mare earned

He was an AQHA World Show Reserve World Champion in 1974 and a winner of such events as the Northwest Cutting Horse Association Maturity and a sixth place finalist at the NCHA Derby. Boon Bar is the sire of many top cutters including the noted Royal Blue Boon, August Futurity Champion, and famous producer of horses like Peptoboonsmal. Peptoboonsmal was an NCHA Futurity Champion and now successful sire with his foals earning over $23 million. He has sired horses like Little Pepto Gal ($526,229); Copaspepto ($472,079) and One Time Pepto ($331,097). Peptoboonsmal shows the versatility of the Doc Bar/Teresa Tivio cross. Better by Cal Bar, giving a double cross to the Doc Bar/Teresa Tivio cross. Doc’s Remedy is a million-dollar sire of performers. This includes horses that have won $920,792 in the NCHA and $150,345.32 in the reined cow horse. He has a modest AQHA record with 72 point earners with 634.5 points earned and 21 Register of Merit awards earned. Fillinic was the mare that put Greg Ward into the training business. She earned a number of reined cow horse titles and then became a blue hen mare for Ward. She raised a number of foals including Sugarnic, CRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion, Springnic, Winninic, Picnic, Quicknic and Anuthernic who were all sired by Sugar Vandy. The foals by Doc’s Remedy that are out of Fillinic and her daughters show the versatility of the Doc Bar/ Teresa Tivio cross. Reminic, Master Remedy and Sugar Remedy are some prime examples. Reminic was out of Fillinic; Master Remedy was out of her daughter Wininic, and Sugar Remedy was out of Sugarnic Ward described Reminic as being a

lot like his sire as a cutting horse. As he put it Reminic was the “same deal in that he cut with the same intensity as his sire.” He didn’t know if Reminic's neck would swell, but they were both low in their cutting style and they were “spring loaded” in their movement in front of a cow.

Master Remedy shows the versatility of this line as the sire of three NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champions: Otoe Master, Master Checks and Masteroani. Reminic was the 1981 NCHA Futurity Champion Stallion and won the trials in the Futurity. He was a multiple finalist in such events as the PCCHA Four-Year-Old Derby and the NCHA Five-Year-Old Classic. He earned over $95,000 in the NCHA, earning the Bronze and Silver Awards. Reminic shows the versatility of the

Doc’s Remedy sire line as the sire of cutters, reiners and reined cow horses with foal earnings of $4.2 million. His champions include Von Reminic, NRHA Futurity Champion; Boomernic, an NRHA Futurity Champion; Reminics Pep, an NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champion and Chex A Nic, an AQHA World Champion in Reining and Working Cow Horse. Sugar Remedy was the 1981 NRCHA Three-Year-Old Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion; the PCCHA Three-Year-Old Futurity Open Reserve Champion and the 1982 Augusta Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Greg Ward was very proud of the versatility this mare demonstrated by placing so high in these three elite contests in two different events. Sugar Remedy is the dam of versatility with foals like Peppy Remedy, the 1988 NRCHA ThreeYear-Old Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Reserve Champion and a multiple finalist at such cutting aged events as the 1989 Rose-Cutlip Four-Year-Old Derby. She is the dam of Reminics Pep mentioned above, and this makes him double bred to Doc’s Remedy with a breeding pattern of 2 X 3. Master Remedy was the winner of $196,000 as an NCHA Platinum Award winner. He was an NCHA Futurity Finalist and the Oklahoma Sunbelt Three-Year-Old Futurity Open Reserve Champion. Master Remedy shows the versatility of this line as the sire of three NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Champions: Otoe Master, Master Checks and Masteroani.

The success of Doc’s Remedy is not limited to his cross with Fillinic and her daughters. Miss Brooks Bar is another mare that when bred to Doc’s Remedy is having a major influence on the performance horse

industry. Ward bought Miss Brooks Bar for $1,000. She became a successful California Reined Cow Horse for Ward. Miss Brooks Bar was a daughter of Doc Bar. The five foals by Doc’s Remedy and out of Miss Brooks Bar are 2 X 2 inbred to Doc Bar. (Doc’s Remedy by Doc Bar X Miss Brooks Bar by Doc Bar) This means that these four foals theoretically carry as much Doc Bar blood as a son or daughter of Doc Bar would carry. The first foal by Doc’s Remedy and out of Miss Brooks Bar was Dual Doc. Dual Doc was a PCCHA FourYear-Old Derby Finalist and an NCHA Futurity Semi-Finalist. He earned over $10,000 in cutting. Dual Doc is like his sire in that he crosses

Dual Pep is the sire of horses that have earned over $25 million. very well with the blood of Fillinic. He is the sire of Fillynic, the last foal out of Fillinic. This mare was a 1985 NCHA Futurity Finalist, a California CHA Four-Year-Old Derby Champion and a finalist at the PCCHA Derby. She is the producer of several good foals by Just Plain Colonel. Some other performers by Dual Doc and out of daughters of Fillinic include Dolly Dual Nic, Pie I Dual and Dollinic. Another outstanding cutter by Dual Doc is Easter Duet, an NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Finalist in 1985. Miss Remedy was the next foal from this cross. This mare is the dam of PSB Remedy, by Peppy San Badger. PSB Remedy is an NCHA Futurity Finalist, a Harris Ranch Four-YearOld Derby Finalist and a third place finisher in the PCCHA Tournament of Champions. She earned over $56,000 in the cutting pen. Miss Frosty Doc is the fourth foal from

this cross and she was the dam of several money earners. They include Smart Frosty Nic ($43,492); Plain Frosty Doc ($27,671), and Frosty Little Uno ($12,748).

Mister Dual Pep’s...foals have earned more than $1.3 million in reined cow horse. Miss Dual Doc is an unshown mare from this cross. She has foal earnings of nearly $800,000 in the arena. Her foals include the leading sires Dual Pep and Mister Dual Pep, both sons of Peppy San Badger. Dual Pep is the earner of $307,354 as the winner of such events as the Augusta Classic, NCHA Five-Year-Old Classic and Non-Pro Divisions, Bonanza Non-Pro Classic and the PCCHA Classic/Challenge. Dual Pep is the sire of horses that have earned over $25 million. They include Dual Rey Me ($818,177); Dually Lena ($395,616); Olena Dually ($309,342); Playboy MacRae ($269,582), and Kit Dual ($251,791). Mister Dual Pep earned $43,929 in the arena. His foals have earned more than $1.3 million in reined cow horse. They include Mister Smart Remedy ($134,157); Playgirls Miss Grace ($98,429), and Ima Smoking

One of the notable aspects of Doc’s Remedy and his sire record is his ability to sire sires and his ability to sire producing mares.

Mister ($78,436). Mister Dual Pep is the sire of Mr Dual Rey ($149,304), an AQHA World Champion in Senior Reining and an USEF Open Reining Champion and an NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity finalist. Doc’s Remedy is the sire of Chex Out This Remedy, the 1995 Snaffle Bit Futurity Reserve Champion. This son of Doc’s Remedy earned $125,826. He was a World’s Greatest Horseman Reserve Champion. The dam of this horse is Fresno’s Miss Chex, a daughter of Bueno Chex. Remedy’s Response is a full sister to Chex Out This Remedy. She earned $39,395 in cutting. She is the dam of A Very Smart Remedy ($103,601), a two-time NRCHA Open Derby Champion and a World’s Greatest Horseman Champion. A very Smart Remedy is the sire of horses that have won over $1.5 million, including NRCHA Derby Champion Smart Luck with combined NRHA and NRCHA earnings of over $227,000. Remedy’s Repeat is another full sister to Chex Out This Remedy. She is the dam of Chex Pep N Remedy ($122,900) and Ima Smart Remedy ($80,441). Ima Smart Remedy is the dam of Mister Smart Remedy the leading winner sired by Mister Dual Doc making him double bred to Doc’s Remedy with a 3 X 3 breeding pattern. One of the notable aspects of Doc’s Remedy and his sire record is his ability to sire sires and his ability to sire producing mares. Reminic, Master Remedy, Mister Dual Doc and Dual Doc represent his siring sons, while Remedy’s Repeat, Remedy’s Response, Miss Dual Doc, Sugar Remedy and Miss Remedy represent his producing daughters. This ability to influence both sides of the pedigree has allowed Doc’s Remedy to remain an integral part of the performance horse industry.

Mares with More

Continuing the Story of Master Breeder Jess Koy with Hanna’s Princess By Larry Thornton We know the American Quarter Horse was built by breeders that brought stallions and mares together that formed the foundation of the breed. Some of these breeders became “Master Breeders” in that the horses they bred provided a lasting

influence through the years. Jess Koy of Eldorado, TX, was one of those early breeders who became a Master Breeder. He bred many fine horses. When he bought Hanna’s Princess, he found the individual that gave him that lasting influence on the breed. Hanna’s Princess is our newest Mare with More.

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • June/July 2016

Leroy Hauerland, who is married to a grand niece of Koy’s and spent many hours with him over the years, explains how Jess Koy came to own Hanna’s Princess and why he bought her. “Hanna’s Princess was a pretty mare, a good looking mare, a good headed mare, a well-muscled mare. Jess and I were standing out there

talking one day and I asked, ‘Where did you get that mare?’ And he said, ‘One of the neighbors had her and I just had to have that mare when I saw her.’ Then he said, ‘You know Leroy, if that mare could have cooked I would have married her.’ ” Hanna’s Princess was a chestnut mare foaled in 1950 and her breeder was Alvis Hanna of Uvalde, TX. Her sire was El Rey H, a full brother to King P-234. They were sired by Zantanon by Little Joe. The dam of Zantanon was Jeanette by Billy by Big Jim. Jabalina by Strait Horse was the dam of El Rey H and King P-234. She was out of a mare known today as Bay Mare and her sire was Traveler. The breeder of El Rey H and King P-234 was M. Benevides Volpe of Laredo, TX. The dam of Hanna’s Princess was Miss Freckles, foaled in 1941 and bred by Larry Baumer of Uvalde, TX. She is listed as owned by Alvis Hanna in my copy of the AQHA Stud Book. She was sired by Little Joe Jr, a son of Joe Bailey P-4. Joe Bailey P-4 was sired by Little King by Possum. Possum was a full brother to Little Joe, the sire of Zantanon. They were sired by Traveler and out of Jenny by Sykes Rondo. Thus Hanna’s Princess was double bred to full brothers, Possum and Little Joe. The dam of Little King was a mare named Nellie by a horse known as the WA Thompson Stud, and she was out of a mare named Patty, a Thompson mare. The dam of Joe Bailey P-4 was a Brown Nixon mare. She was sired by Nixon’s Joe Bailey. Nixon’s Joe Bailey was sired by Diamond Deck by Cold Deck by Old Billy. The Nixon Brown Mare was out of Fanny by Billy Dribble. Billy Dribble was sired by Anthony by Old Billy. Fanny was out of a Nixon Mare whose pedigree is unknown. Jess Koy used several horses that

The dam of Golden Leaf was Clegg Rose by El Rey. El Rey was bred by George Clegg and owned by a number of breeders, including Ott Adams, Tom East, the Waggoner Ranch and Raymond Dickson. This El Rey was sired by Traveler and was out of Black Bess by Warrior. The dam of Black Bess was Jenny the dam of Possum and Little Joe. This makes El Rey a three-quarter brother to Possum and Little Joe. This gives Hanna’s Princess a 3 X 5 X 5 breeding pattern to these three-quarter brothers. The dam of Clegg Rose was Texas Chief’s Sister. She was sired by Traveler and out of the Hallettesville Mare. Texas Chief’s Sister was the dam of San Antonio Sorrel, the sire of Monty the sire of Jiggs H. Jiggs H was the sire of Belle Koy, a Koy foundation mare. The next foal out of Hanna’s Princess was Gay Rey by La Pryor’s Billy. This mare earned two halter points. She was purchased by Gordon Howell. Howell owned Leo San at that time and his manager was Matlock Rose. When bred to Leo San this mare produced Leo San Rey, an AQHA Superior cutting horse and an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $8,742.32 in earnings. Hanna’s Princess’ next foal was King Koy, listed as bred by Suel Laning. Suel Laning owned some interesting horses including Rocket Laning, the dam of Royal King, and a mare named Roan Alice L, who was the dam of such mares as Red Bud L and Little Alice L, both mares sired by King P-234. All three mares were purchased by J. M. Frost III, who bought Bay Bob from Jess Koy. Red Bud L was the dam of Bay Bob’s AQHA Champion Red Rueben. King Koy was sired by King A making him a full brother to Ka Rey. King A was bred by O. C. O’Quinn of Tomball, TX. King A has no official show record with the AQHA or NCHA. He does have a record for Get of Sire with one win in six shows. King A was sired by King P-234. The dam of King A was Annie B by Joe Moore. Her dam was Ramona by Paul Ell. Jess Koy in 1957 and she brought King Koy with her as he was registered as bred by Suel Laning and owned by Jess Koy. King Koy introduces an important link in the rest of the story through his trainer James Kenney. James Kenney was a well-rounded horseman-- a cowhand, rancher, roper and cutting horse trainer and rider. Kenney showed King Koy, earning 48 AQHA cutting points with an NCHA Certificate of Ability and earnings of $3,260.85. This show record is only part of the story as King Koy died in 1962 at the height of his career. He died shortly after being named Co-Champion of the 1962 Houston Livestock Show open cutting. He was in the NCHA Open Top Ten when he died. According to Leroy Hauerland , Kenney thought very highly of King Koy. “I got to talk to James Kenny several times through the years and he told me the horse he was the most proud of was King Koy,” Hauerland

says. “He told me that he would have been greater than Doc O’Lena if he had lived. He was by far the best horse he had ever ridden. He told me he was good on any kind of cow.” Hauerland recalls what Kenney told him about the Houston show and King Koy’s ability to hold a cow: “When they won Houston they got a standing ovation in the coliseum. They had some crossbred cattle that Louis Pearce had brought in off the coast and they were like deer and nobody wanted to cut them. James said when he walked in there the first heifer he cut just went back and forth and bounced off the wall. This ole horse just went right with her and held her. Then the second cow he cut worked pretty good. The third cow was going to run right over him. Run right at him and this horse squatted and back up and back up just like a cat and when she got within five feet he leaped toward her and turned that cow just like nothing. He could move forward, backward, horizontally, it didn’t matter. He could jump 10 feet at a time and he got real low.” King Koy sired only 11 foals. He counted among his foals the mare King Koy’s Queen, the successful halter filly and dam of Soft And Smooth, winner of $61,312.11. She is also the dam of Bay Joe’s

Last, a halter point earner; Mollie Chick, another halter point earner, and Special King, an NCHA money earner and performance point earner. Another daughter is King Koy’s Lass. She is the dam of three NCHA money earners in Mr Jess Koy, Smokey Sorrel and Vandal Koy. Mr Jess Koy and Smoky Sorrel were AQHA point earners. A third daughter of King Koy was King Star Face. She is the dam of Six Chick Tom by Six Chick. He earned a racetrack ROM with an 83 speed index as well as three halter points and seven performance points. King Star Face is also the dam of Queen Joan, with six AQHA open and seven youth performance points, and Smooth Face, with four performance points. Smooth Face is the winner of $10,951.33 in the NCHA. James Kenney showed up again as a figure in the Koy breeding. Kenney had shown the stallion Joe Barrett. Joe Barrett was bred by Bert Benear from Oklahoma, and he was purchased by Kenney’s father-inlaw Fred Barrett. Joe Barrett was a successful show horse that was an accomplished roping horse and the 1945 Grand Champion Stallion at Fort Worth Stock Show. Joe Barrett bred six mares in the 1957 breeding season, including Hanna’s Princess.

The other five were daughters of King P-234. Jess Hankins bred three of them and Lowell Hankins bred one. The foal sired by Joe Barrett and out of Hanna’s Princess was named Fred Barrett. This horse earned eight halter and three performance points. He was an NCHA money winner. Fred Barrett was used by Jess Koy as a breeding stallion. But he died young, producing only a few foals including the Grand Champion halter mare Cricket’s Ginger. This mare earned two Grand Championships and two Reserve Grand Championships with nine halter points. She was also an AQHA performance point winner in cutting. Cricket Koy, the dam of Cricket’s Ginger, was sired by V Day Koy and out of Little Nell Koy. The next two daughters of Hanna’s Princess were Zona Koy and Linda Koy. Both of these mares were sired by Fleet Boss, a horse bred by Jess Hankins, owner of King P-234. He was sired by Fourble Joe by King P-234. Fourble Joe was bred by O. C. O’Quinn, the breeder of Annie B, the dam of King A, the sire of King Koy. Taco Princess was an unshown mare out of Hanna’s Princess and sired by Taco Bar. She is the dam of Senorita Taco by Joe’s Last. Hauerland bought Senorita Taco at the Jess Koy estate dispersal. He has kept a number of daughters from this branch of Hanna’s Princess family. His goal has been to build a broodmare band with these mares. This includes three daughters of Senorita Boon Bar by Boon Bar. These mares were bred to Lucky O Lena by Doc O’Lena. They are now being bred to the Hauerland stallions Atta Cat and Playboy Boonsmal. King Koy 2 was foaled the year after his older full brother King Koy died. King Koy 2 earned one AQHA halter point. He sired a limited number of performers including Queen Joan and

Mr Jess Koy already mentioned, as well as St Patrick’s Girl with NCHA earnings of $2,331.04. The most successful daughter of King Koy 2 was Genes Queen, an unshown mare. She is the dam of Joes Last Hickory by Doc’s Hickory. This gelding has earned $140,063.47. He was the 1988 NCHA Non-Pro Super Stakes Reserve Champion. Joes Last Hickory is a full brother to Cranky Kid, winner of $54,737.25 in the NCHA. A third full brother is Joes Little Bro, winner of $2,837 in the NCHA and an AQHA Superior Team Penning Horse. The next three foals out of Hanna’s Princess bring James Kenney back into the mix. Kenney trained and showed Joe’s Last, a son of Joe

Uno Princess and James Kenney won the 1968 NCHA Futurity. She... became an NCHA Top Ten performer, earning a total of $41,223.27 in the NCHA. She earned 90 AQHA cutting points and a Superior.

Reed P-3. Joe’s Last was an AQHA Superior cutting horse with 222 points. He was an NCHA Silver Award winner and an NCHA Top Ten finalist. Jess Koy used Joe’s Last as a sire, producing Prince Koy out of Hanna’s Princess. He was another stallion used by Koy in his breeding program. Prince Koy was shown at halter in the AQHA, winning four of seven classes, with three wins as a yearling and then one as a 2 year old,

earning two halter points. The next foal out of Hanna’s Princess was Uno Princess by Jose Uno by Joe’s Last. Jose Uno and James Kenney went to the 1963 NCHA Futurity and finished in a tie for fifth. Jose Uno was used by Jess Koy in the 1964 breeding season and one of the foals produced was Uno Princess. Jose Uno was later sold and he won the 1969 NCHA Open World Championship. Uno Princess and James Kenney won the 1968 NCHA Futurity. She was also sold and became an NCHA Top Ten performer, earning a total of $41,223.27 in the NCHA. She earned 90 AQHA cutting points and a Superior. She was the 1977 AQHA High Point Cutting Mare. An added note: Jess Koy offered to sell Uno Princess to Leroy Hauerland. Hauerland regretted not buying her but as a young man starting out, he couldn’t afford the $10,000 price tag. Uno Princess formed a major branch of the Hanna’s Princess line of horses. She is the dam of horses like Docs Miss N Dinero, winner of $15,049; Lynx Princess, winner of $11,394; Brinks Princess, winner of $9,411, and Uno Dinero, an AQHA Superior heading horse. But it is the daughters of Uno Princess that demonstrate the success of this line. Smokee Uno, an unshown daughter of Uno Princess, is the dam of Cowcattin, winner of $264,363, and Smokin Smarty Pants, winner of $40,939. Docs Miss N Dinero is the dam of Falcon Feather, winner of $100,284; Miss N A Little Cash, winner of $54,097, and WJ Pretty In Pink, winner of $50,554. One Time Soon, an unshown daughter of Uno Princess sired by Smart Little Lena, is the dam of horses that have earned $1 million.

sire in cutting and reined cow horse. Some of his other foals include One Time Choice, $281,386; Blue One Time, $255,386, and Timeto Hangten, $224,310. The next foal out of Hanna’s Princess was Lady Mary Lee. This daughter of Joe’s Last earned five AQHA halter points and was a trained cutting mare. Hauerland describes her as “a real pretty mare.” “She was a prettier mare than Uno Princess. She wouldn’t cut under the lights or in an arena. She got stage fright. But you could cut on her on the outside. Jess and Jim told me she was better than Uno Princess. She had a lot of style and a lot of move, but she would panic when you went into the arena.”

Lady Mary Lee became a broodmare, producing performers such as Man O Lena, winner of $24,353.47, and Slama Jama Mama, winner of $12,484. Her grand get include He Sa Dually Pep, winner of $31,128.78; Steady Uno, $28,121.63, and TA Jenny Diver, winner of $20,051.37. One of the unshown mares out of Lady Mary Lee is Bernice Lee, by Joe’s Last and out of Hanna’s Princess. Bernice Lee was the dam of Genes Queen, the dam of Joes Last Hickory. The pedigree of Queens Gene epitomizes the Koy breeding program. She was sired by King Koy 2 by King A who was out of Hanna’s Princess. Her dam Bernice Lee is by Bay Joe’s Last by Joe’s Last and he was out of King Koy’s Queen by King Koy. King Koy’s Queen was out of Patsy Koy by Hondo K. The dam of Patsy Koy was Belle Koy by Jiggs H. Jess Koy was always moving forward, putting the best blood he could find into his breeding program. One of the stallions he brought in was Six Chick, bred on the Burnett Ranches of Guthrie, TX. He leased this stallion from them. Six Chick was sired by Triple Chick, the famous son of Three Bars and the great mare Chicado V by Chicaro Bill. The dam of Six Chick was Peg O’Neill by Joe Tom and she was out of Mary O’Neill by King O’Neill II. Her dam was Miss Tommy 96 by Tom (Scooter). The Tom (Scooter) mares were a major part of the Burnett Ranches great breeding program. Six Chick Koy sired Seven Chickadee who was Superior in Amateur Western Pleasure and Amateur Trail, earning 167.5 AQHA open, amateur and youth points. The dam of Seven Chickadee was Lady Fred by Fred Barrett and her dam was Red Shoe Koy by V Day Koy and she was out of Jess Koy foundation mare Belle Koy.

Page 44

Not all the good horses sired by Six Chick Koy were bred by Jess Koy. Five Bar Roys Chic earned 636.5 AQHA points in open, amateur and novice divisions earning Superiors in open western pleasure, amateur western horsemanship, amateur western riding, amateur trail and open trail. This gelding was bred by A. L. Fiveash of Enola, TX. Miss Six Chick was an unshown full sister to Six Chick Koy. She was the dam of Especial Chick, an AQHA ROM performer with NCHA earnings of $4,632.41. Polka Doc was foaled by Hanna’s Princess in 1973 and sired by Dry Doc. She earned $2,698. She was the dam of horses like Peppy Polka Doc, winner of $137,316.36. Peppy Polka Doc was the dam of Peppy Chic Olena, winner of $59,198.72 as the 2000 NRHA Intermediate NonPro Derby Champion and the 2001 NRHA Non-Pro Derby Champion. Polka Doc was the dam of Dry San Princess, winner of $66,080.75, and the 1985 NCHA Non-Pro Derby Reserve Champion. She was the dam of Dry Play, winner of $29,506.42. Little Peppy Polka, another full sister to Peppy Polka Doc, was the dam of Magic Abbie, winner of $102,150.34. The last foal of Hanna’s Princess is Gay Hanna by Gay Bar King. This unshown mare is the dam of Special Han, the winner of $17,805.98, and an AQHA ROM performer with 22 performance points. Jess Koy advised Leroy Hauerland to “never breed down; always breed up.” That’s what Jess Koy did with Hanna’s Princess, making her the key to bringing his breeding program together and cementing his role as a Master Breeder.

Kenneth Mayzner of KeSa Ranch Dies Kenneth Matzner of KeSa Ranch in Ault, CO, died March 28 after battling cancer for 16 years. Ken was born in Brush, CO and was raised in Fort Morgan. Upon graduation from Fort Morgan High School, he attended Colorado State University and UNC, receiving his degree in education. He was in the armed forces during the Korean Conflict, and returned to Fort Collins, CO,

and the Poudre Canyon which he dearly loved. He owned and operated Glen Echo Resort from 1958 until 1975, when he and Sam Shoultz, longtime best friend, created a partnership to run Glen Echo Resort together. They sold the resort in 2001, because of Ken’s cancer. Many words describe Ken: honest, generous, genteel, genuine, a friend, nonjudgmental, a hard worker that never quit, and a true friend that wore the white hat well. Many people were proud to call him a friend.

Ken’s life was focused on the outdoors, fishing and hunting from Africa to Alaska. He was never happier than when following these passions. He freely shared his harvest and loved to cook for friends. He was a great cook, and called cooking `an art’. Ken and Sam co-owned KeSa Ranch where they raised registered Quarter Horses, primarily from Driftwood and Hancock lines. They also were partners in a wholesale business. He was very proud of all of these endeavors, and was a tireless worker.

Real Estate Market Appears to be Strong for Most Market Segments By John Stratman At Mason & Morse Ranch Company we cover a variety of market segments including farm, ranch and recreation/lifestyle properties. Overall, 2015 was an excellent year for the real estate markets as the improving US economy and Federal monetary policy made production driven assets a favored investment class. Generally, inventory has been limited for good to excellent quality farm and ranch lands. The demand from buyers has subsided with lower cattle and grain prices impacting optimism. Recreation lands and lifestyle properties continue to show improvement in activity and sales; however, the buyers have a large inventory to consider and they have become discerning in terms of value.

Taking a closer look at specific markets, we observed the following trends: Working ranch prices through the summer of 2015 were very strong due to lack of inventory and strong demand resulting from the strong cattle market. The precipitous break in cattle prices last fall is not expected to improve any time soon and the demand for ranches has trailed with lighter interest so far in 2016. The inventory of working ranches continues to be tight, but we see the inventory beginning to loosen up. The inventory of smaller pasture lands coming to market appears to be increasing. Aside from interest in very large ranches, there appears to be a lull in demand as buyers try to

foresee the direction of values. The outlook for the remainder of 2016 will be dependent on weather and drought conditions; with lower cattle and calf prices expected, it seems the bloom will be off for higher prices. Recreation and lifestyle properties including horse properties have been slow since last summer as buyers pause to assess values. There remains a good selection of inventory and sellers have held strong on prices. We expect that some seller motivation will be required to put a deal together. It should be noted that some of the geographic areas for these “niche” markets are seeing varying results. The recreation and lifestyle markets have improved, however, concern over the economy as well as election

year jitters are affecting buyers’ actions. There seems to be adequate inventory in most market segments. Farmland values have declined over the last 12 months as commodity prices (grain in particular), have remained soft. Areas with specialty or perishable crops such as vegetables, nuts and tree fruit are seeing stable prices and continued demand. The interest from large investors and larger family farm operators for additional farmland has softened and there appears to be increasing inventory indicating that prices will continue to soften through the fall as we see those that need to sell being more aggressive with marketing. Prices will be driven by the outlook for commodity prices which are trading in the lower end of the long term trading range. Overall, we expect 2016 to be an active year with more inventories. Demand from buyers will be driven by income consideration and value. The lack of other investment opportunities will keep buyer demand strong, but discerning. Sellers have few reinvestment opportunities and it seems some sellers will only sell if they find a replacement property, making many transactions subject to 1031 exchange requirements.

The real estate corral of Working Horse Magazine WORKS Online & In Print I posted one of my ranch/horse properties to Working Horse Magazine's Facebook page. In two days my property had 24,936 views.
