History of Polo Polo originated in Asia more than 2,000 years ago.

Photo by Nina Van DeLeure It may have descended from buzkashi– the national sport of Afghanistan, a rough-and-tumble horseback sport. Some believe that the son of the last Persian emperor introduced polo to China around 670 B.C. The name of the game may well come from the word “pholo” meaning “ball” or “ballgame” in the Balti language of Tibet.

The modern sport of polo had its beginnings in the 1860s in Punjab, India, when British officers took up the game of polo that they had seen played by local horsemen. The game was introduced in England in 1869 and in America by 1876. English and Irish engineers introduced the game to Argentina, where the first official game was held in 1875.

According to scholars, including the Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., the game traveled along the “Silk Road” from China to the rest of the world. “Let other people play other things–the king of games is still the game of kings.” This verse is inscribed on a stone tablet at a polo ground north of Kashmir near this fabled trade route.

The United States Polo Association was established in 1890 to coordinate games, standardize rules and establish handicaps. Polo is now played around the world in over 75 countries in North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. In 1998, the Federation of International Polo was established.

Position One

Position Two

Position Three

Position Four

The Number One position requires a player with the accuracy and confidence to score. This is his offensive job. He must have fast, steady horses in order to beat the opposing Number Four to the ball and stroke it into the goal. He must be optimistic and anticipate the forward passes, as well as know when to cover the Number Four, timing his ride-offs so his teammates can come through with the ball.

This player is often called the “sparkplug” of the team. As an attacker, he is the most aggressive offensive player on the team. He must have fast and fit horses and think quickly in order to set up the scoring opportunities.Communication with his Number Three is important; the two of them are the driving force behind the plays. The Number Two marks the opposing Number Three and keeps him from turning the ball.

The quarterback of the team and the most versatile, this offensive and defensive player must act quickly, yet with a cool head, always thinking a play ahead. As a play maker, his responsibilities are to turn the opponent’s attack around and direct his team’s offensive drive with well placed passes. The Number Three accepts the ride offs so his horse should be strong, stop easily, and rein well. The Number Three is usually the field captain as far as team strategy goes.

As back, this position requires a deliberate approach, yet leaves no margin for error. He must play his position and keep himself between the goal and the attacking Number One. The Number Four should always back the ball at an angle so his teammates can more easily pick it up. This is often called the “thinking man’s position”. He and his horses should be strong and steady.

Steven Garfield (1)

David Halliday (2)

Gaston Henry (2)

Victoria Halliday (A)

Joe is one of our newest players and helps in various functions at the Saturday games. He is an accomplished realtor, investor and developer. And a talented musician.

25+ year polo veteran, you will often find Steve playing position two. Steve shows a classic example of that position, with his aggressively offensive style. He has played in Italy, Spain and Portugal, where he started the O’Porta Polo Club.

Gaston has been playing polo since he was 7 years old and has been playing professionally most of his life. He has played at Hurlingham, Buenos Aires. He is known as a master of the mallet.

Christoph Gerberding (A) Christoph started playing polo in California. When he moved to the East Coast, he co-founded Colts Neck Polo Club in Colts Neck, NJ. He has also played in Argentina. Christopher lives in Far Hills, NJ.

Al Gillen (B)

Page 24

Al took up riding when his daughter outgrew her trail horse, and passed him back to dad. After learning how to ride his new horse, Al graduated to hunter paces then on to playing polo. He’s been known to ride a hunter pace in the morning on one horse, stop home and switch horses, then play polo later on the same day.

Carol says the Lord has blessed her with good horses, good friends and the honor/privilege to play the great sport of polo. She works as a staff RN in Interventional Radiology/GI Unit and specializes in PICC placements and takes “call” which sadly limits her game and practice time. But when available - GAME ON!

Dave is returning to polo after a two year hiatus. He is looking forward to being back out on the polo field and riding with his family. In between parenting and polo Dave manages the family real estate.

Victoria is a landscape architect and lives on the family farm along with her husband Dave and their twins, Annie and Owen. Victoria began riding at the age of 10. She introduced Annie and Owen to the sport when they were two.

Dr. Anders Hedberg (B) Dr. Hedberg began riding and competing in dressage events in his native Sweden in the ‘60s. He continued riding dressage when he moved to the US but was bitten by the polo bug during a trip to Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. In his spare time, he can be found hard at work at Bristol-Meyers Squibb in Lawrenceville, NJ.

Gary Hulton (B)

This is Gary’s 3rd season at Tinicum. After completing the French National Equitation exams, he began playing polo in 2006 in Chantilly, France, then moved to Argentina where he helped launch the International Polo Academy, worked at Santa Catalina Polo in Open Door and was managing partner of a new polo club in Cañuelas. He writes for UK Polo Times magazine.

Rhea Lowenthal (B)

Kirstan Lamont (B)

James McDevitt (A)

Jason grew up with horses on his family’s cattle ranch in Western Montana, but it wasn’t until he spent a semester abroad in Argentina that he became interested in polo. Jason moved to New Jersey in 2010 and began learning the sport at January Farm in 2012. We welcome Jason for his third season at Tinicum Park. Jim’s desire to learn and play polo started much earlier on in life but didn’t become a reality until after attending a couple of the Bonnie Brae Polo Classic events. He now enjoys spending his time learning and honing the skills needed to play and looks forward to playing his second season at Tinicum. Jim and his wife Lori live in Hunterdon. Originally from New Zealand, Kirstan was bitten hard by the polo bug in 2013 while living in Australia. With no formal horse experience, Kirstan has largely been learning via polo-cations across eight countries. Meeting new people and sharing experiences on and off the field are a focus in Kirstan’s first season with TPPC.

He derives pleasure not just from the horses and the competitive challenge, but also from the beautiful settings, the camaraderie, and the feeling of well-being involved with the sport.

Rudolph Morgan (B)

Mark Mulligan (A)

Tyler Vance (B)

Dennis Santana (2)

Audrey Van Luvanee (A)

Youngki Shim (B)

Juan Vidal (2)

Dr. Mullin has held a significant role as a sports medicine clinician at B.W. Furlong and Associates since 1998. She grew up riding, and training hunters and jumpers. She has served as an FEI veterinarian at the Winter Equestrian Festival and as USET team veterinarian at world championships. Mark has been a member for over 10 years now - and one to watch for on the field. Mark has played in Florida and Argentina and his game makes Tinicum Park Polo exciting for spectators and challenging for club members. Mark lives in Frenchtown, NJ, with his wife Kate and two daughters.

Ann saw her first polo match at Cornell University in 1981 and was instantly hooked. She started lessons in 1994, played at Bucks County for years, then went on to play in MD, NJ, FL and the Dominican Republic. You can count on her husband Len and daughter Taylor to be on the sidelines cheering her on.

Dennis has been with Tinicum Park Polo Club for 14 years, helping as an umpire and a professional player. He plays high goal polo at Sarasota Polo Club, FL, during the winter months. He came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. He trains polo ponies and gives lessons in his free time.

This will be Young’s second season as a member of the Tinicum Park Polo Club. He says he has found an activity that reduces stress, provides a workout and is fun all at the same time. Polo was never on his radar but the stars aligned and fate would have it that he found Tinicum. He feels lucky to be part of the Tinicum Park Polo family.

Page 28

Suzanne and her fiance George Daniello are happy to return to the field after being away too long. When she’s not astride, Suzanne enjoys her work as a nurse practitioner. George is a happily retired Teamster president.

Bill, with great sportsmanship, good nature and a booming shot, is a pleasure to watch on the field. Better know as “The Hammer”, you can find him always lending a hand to keep the club running well.

Tyler grew up around horses and after his first polo lesson in 2010 he was instantly hooked. He thoroughly enjoys playing the game as well as hanging out with and cheering on teammates from the sidelines. He is excited for another summer to play as much as he can.

Audrey is always the first to the field and the last to leave, spending as much time as possible with her fine horses. This year she will be sure to continue to impress the spectators with her competitive spirit.

Born in Argentina, Juan moved to the US in 1990. He played polo in Argentina and France before coming to the US. Juan is a professional photographer as well as an accomplished blacksmith. Juan is the farrier for many of the horses at Tinicum Park Polo and Official Farrier for Dressage at Devon since 1997.

Glossary of Polo Terms Ball:3 ½” in diameter and 4 ½ oz. Today’s polo ball is made of white plastic and can travel 110 miles per hour, so watch out if it heads off field.

Goal judges: Each goal has a goal judge who holds a flag up when a goal is scored and waves the flag in a downward motion when the ball goes wide of the goal posts.

Bump: A player may “ride off” or bump his opponent off the line of the ball, removing him from play. A bump cannot endanger either horse or rider; the player riding off must be going the same speed, and at no more than a 45% degree angle as the player he is pushing over.

Handicap: Polo players are assigned a handicap, between -2 (or C) to 10 goals. This reflects his or her theoretical worth to the team and is not related to how many goals they may make in a game. Only 10 or 12 players in the world at any single time have the highest handicap of 10.

Chukker: In a standard polo game there are six time periods called chukkers, lasting a maximum of seven and ½ minutes. A horn (or bell) is sounded two minutes before each chukker, two horns sound at the time the chukker is to commence and a single horn sounds to indicate 30 seconds remain in the chukker. At the end of the chukker a horn will sound twice unless the ball becomes out of play, hits the side boards or a goal is scored after the 7- minute horn which will end the chukker then. Divot stomping: The old time polo tradition when spectators walk onto the field at half time to stomp and place back the small pieces of turf disturbed by horse hooves during play. Field: The outdoor polo field is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide, larger than nine football fields. Foul: An infringement of the rules. The umpire blows a whistle, the time stops and a free hit is allowed by the team which was fouled. The time starts again when the ball is hit. Goal: The objective in Polo is to score the most goals by hitting the ball through the goal posts of the defending team. After a goal is scored the teams switch directions and return to the center of the field for a throw in. Page 36

Photo by Jean Vergara Hook: A defensive move in which a player hooks or strikes the opponent’s mallet to keep them from hitting the ball. A player may not “cross hook” which is reaching over, under or across his opponent’s horse or “high hook” above the shoulder of the player in an outdoor game. These are considered dangerous and result in a foul. Knock-in: When the ball goes off the field over the end line but not through the goal posts the defending team is allowed to hit the ball back in from the point it went out. The players on the attacking team must stand 30 yards or more from the player knocking in until the ball is in play. Line of the Ball: Similar to the line on a

highway which keeps cars from cashing into each other, the line of the ball in polo helps delineate the rights of way of the players moving up and down the field. It is the imaginary line created by the moving ball from the point it was hit to the new direction it is going. Players need to be aware of and continually adjust to the changing line.

full sized horse. This name derives from the early days of polo, when the British learned from the Manipuri Indians. They used small sturdy ponies which made the game easier because they were closer to the ground and the ball.

Near Side: Horses are generally handled, mounted and dismounted on thhe left, so it is called the near side. A near side shot is on the left side and because players carry their mallets in their right hands, it requires reaching across the horse to hit the ball. Off Side: Is the right side of the horse. The most common shot in polo is the off side forward. Polo wraps: Long bandages wrapped around the lower leg or other types of protective wraps are used to protect the horse’s lower legs from the mallet. Pony: A polo pony is not a pony but a
