Equine Discussions with Cal Middleton
What do I look for when buying a broke horse to ride? One thing we have to do is establish our goal with the horse. Knowing what we are looking for is important, but no matter what the goal is there are some common principles that I use when helping a client select a horse, or selecting one for myself. First and foremost the horse needs to know how to accept pressure for me to be interested. How much pressure does the horse need to know how to accept? That may depend on the goals for the horse, experience of the rider, and the future plans for the horse's training. For example, let's say I am looking for a trail riding horse and I get on the horse and ride him down the ditch next to the road and he spooks when a car comes by and starts to run. What happens next is important. As the horse moves his feet as a reaction to being spooked by the car I would pick up my hands and pull on the horse to get his attention back on me. If the horse gives to the bit and relaxes into my hands, then that means the horse is accepting pressure at that moment. If the horse does not give to my hands and maybe puts his nose up and pushes through my hand or runs sideways to get away from the pressure, or rears up, then that means the horse is not accepting pressure at that moment. Another principle that I use when selecting a horse is the overall trainability of the horse. I can not expect every horse to be perfect, but during my first encounter with the horse I may try to see if I can get
him to learn something new or do things in a little different manner. I can then judge the horses trainability based on his reaction. Conformation and pedigree are also two important principles when selecting a horse. Both can be important, but neither are as important as trainability. Generally speaking, horses can be bred to do certain disciplines. But just because the horse is not bred or built for that discipline, it does not mean that the horse can not compete. There are always exceptions and this article is only scratching the surface of the important principles of selecting a horse. One final principle would be physical soundness. This can be a very confusing topic. It is important to remember that there are lame horses, there are crippled horses, there are sore horses. Then there are lots of horses that are still not quite

sound. It is not as black and white as yes or no. A veterinarian should not pass or fail a horse in a pre-purchase exam. There is something physically wrong with every horse; we have to decide what we can live with and what we can not, based on our goals, budget, future training plans, and our experience. I hope this helps broaden your thought process on buying a horse. I know this is all very vague and I will discuss more details in the future. Powders vs. Pellets From time to time I hear someone ask; what is the reason Silver Lining Herbs does not make a pellet or a crumble? I thought I would address this question in the form a short article.The art of natural healing is as old as the earth itself. When God walked with Adam and Eve He taught

Can I Ride With Spurs? By Richard Winters Spurs are associated with horsemanship, right alongside bits and saddles. Yet there remains confusion and sometimes intimidation in regard to their use in some riders’ minds. This article is an attempt to “demystify” spurs and discuss who should use them along with when and how. I’ve observed great horsemen and women all of my life. Whether they were English or Western riders, well over 90% of them rode with spurs. Beyond just looking cool, those riders understood the significant difference that spurs can make in communicating effectively with their horses. A few years ago, as I was addressing the use of spurs at a clinic, a participant was quick to say, “I sure don’t need spurs! My horse already goes too fast!” This gentleman misunderstood the primary reason for using spurs. Spurs are first and foremost used for lateral movement. Yes, it’s true, kicking a horse with both spurs might cause him to go faster (or get you bucked off!). However, that’s not the principal function of the spur. The specific, direct touch of a spur can be very effective in moving a horse’s body parts, left and right, whether it is his shoulders, rib cage or hind end. Along with being a very specific cue, the spur will also help you reinforce a leg cue that a horse might be ignoring. If your horse moves freely and willingly off your leg consistently without spurs, that’s great. Spurs however, will allow you to back up the suggestion of leg pressure should your horse choose to ignore the cue. Should you ride with spurs? My response would be, “Yes, as long as you can ride with an independent seat!” This means that you don’t grip below your knees to stay on or inadvertently poke your horse with the spurs unintentionally. I don’t ride with a perfect independent seat at all times. Therefore I remove my spurs when I begin training a colt. With so much unpredictability in the first couple rides, I don’t want to throw gasoline on the fire by accidently spuring my young horse. Once the colt is lined out and traveling comfortably, I’ll put my spurs back on and ride my horse with them for the rest of his life. WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Winter 2013

In order to properly cue your horse you need to know where to correctly position your spur, on your horse’s side. The angle of your foot is very important. Turning your toe out and down will allow you to strategically place your spur right where you want it. There are three general areas, on your horse’s side, to place your spur. 1) Forward: Close to the front cinch. This area is most effective in moving your horse’s shoulders left and right. 2) Middle: Right where your leg naturally hangs. This moves your horse’s ribcage laterally as you would in a side pass. 3) Back: When you place your spur close to where the back cinch would lie, you are able to control your horse’s hindquarters in both directions.
You will not achieve the full benefit of using spurs until your learn to turn your toe out and down. If your horse has not yet become accustomed to spurs then you have the responsibility to introduce him to their effect without scaring him. You can even do this as a ground exercise, while holding the spur in your hand. Always be smooth. There is rarely a reason to poke your horse with the spur. Slowly pressing with your spur and then releasing when the desired step is achieved will give you the best results. As with any training technique; remember to be firm as necessary yet gentle as possible. Spurs are not cruel or inhumane. No more than a bit in your horse’s mouth. When abuse takes place it has little to do with

the object and everything to do with the handler. Great horsemen, and women, use spurs to refine maneuvers and develop higher degrees of subtle communication. FL Lady Bug From Ranch Horse to Hall of Fame By Larry Thornton
FL Lady Bug is a legend in the annals of quarter horse history. She started life as an everyday ranch broodmare and ended up in the AQHA Hall of Fame for her contribution to quarter horse racing. She is the dam of horses like Lady Bug’s Moon, a major sire in the racehorse industry that is found in the that have run in the All American Futurity. Plus Lady Bug’s Moon and Bugs Alive in 75 made major contributions to modern barrel racing, adding another dimension to the great FL Lady Bug, making her one of our Mares with More. FL Lady Bug was born in 1945 and her breeder was W. A. Yeager of Woodward, OK. She was sired by Sergeant and out of Yeager’s Lady JA by Will Stead. Her pedigree is one strong argument for the practice of inbreeding. Sergeant was bred by S. B. Barnes of Tulia, TX. Yeager’s Lady JA was bred by the famed JA Ranch of Paloduro, TX, and she was registered in the AQHA by Yeager. The sire of Sergeant was Billy McCue who was sired by Jack McCue by Peter McCue. The dam of Jack McCue was Marguerite by Barlow by Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was a grandson of Old Billy. The dam of Billy McCue was Sorrel Alice by Chickasha Bob. Chickasha Bob was sired by Texas Chief by Lock’s Rondo. Sorrel Alice was out of Maud by Old Billy. Maud was out of Old Alice by Old Billy. This gives Billy McCue a breeding pattern of 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. Old Billy was sired by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust. The sire of Yeager’s Lady JA was Will Stead, a full brother to Sergeant, the sire of FL Lady Bug. This gives this foundation bred mare a breeding pattern of 7 X 7 X 7 X 4 Page 34
X 5 X 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. W. A. Yeager was her first owner and when she died she was owned by Marvin Barnes of Ada, OK. In between she changed hands nine times. Her official AQHA record shows that she was unshown and unraced, but she is credited with winning a weanling halter class. The article “The Barnes…Love Those Bugs,” in the April 1973 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal, verifies that she won this class in August 1945 at Stillwater, OK. Shortly after, the weanling filly made her first move to a new owner, the Flying L Ranch of Davis, OK, owned by V. B. Likins. The Flying L
Ranch bought both FL Lady Bug and her dam Yeager’s Lady JA. It was the Flying L Ranch that registered FL Lady Bug, thus the prefix FL at the beginning of her name. The purchase price was $150. The Flying L Ranch kept her until she was about four years old. So between 1945 and 1949 she was on the Flying L Ranch producing her first foal for them in 1949. That foal was Dusty Laddy by Stormy Page Day. 75 Dusty Laddy has no race or show record in the AQHA internet records and is listed as bred by Alice Likins. The next foal out of FL Lady Bug was Rocky Bert, a gelding by Bert P-227. This gelding was bred by Glen McDaniel of Pontotc County, OK, the third owner. Rocky Bert, born in 1952, is the first indication of what was to come from the ranch mare that would become a major source of speed. He was an AA rated racehorse with his ROM, winning eight of his 13 races. He was also an AQHA performance point earner. Lady Shelly by Star Deck was the next foal out of FL Lady Bug.

This ole boy came by one day and said, ‘Marvin, you want to buy a good mare?’ Well I was trading horses and I said, ‘Yeah!’ and then I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Well your buddy Forest has a good lookin’ mare.’ He told me she was at the ranch at Fittstown. I knew right where that ranch was. Spiritual Food From God's Feed Truck The outside image of a horses foot when read properly is a reflection of the inner most parts of the hoof. To the farrier who has been trained to accurately assess hoof wall distortion, it will be apparent what needs to be done to the foot in order to achieve balance. This will position the horse to perform up to his maximum, God-given potential. However, traditional ways of shoeing horses deal primarily with outward appearance and often do not deal with the position of the hoof as it relates to the internal structure of the horses foot. When a farrier places the shoe onto a foot without considering the mechanics of motion, weight bearing and bone alignment, he will often position the horse to be compromised in his movement and performance. Essentially what happens is the foot is continuously being forced forward, and the weight of the horse is coming down behind the support of the foot creating a continual slipping off of the foundation. Without a firm foundation the horse is set up for all sorts of problems in his future. This reminds me of the old hymn we often sing in church, How Firm the Foundation.There are so many parallels to our faith in Jesus and working with horses that you almost can not separate the two. Just like the horse slipping off his firm foundation, when we lose our focus on whom our foundation lies and try to build our lives on the shaky foundation the world has to offer, we set ourselves up for disappointment and painful times in our future. However when we focus on the finished work that Jesus did for us on the cross, our foundation will be firm and no matter what comes our way the Grace of God will have us and we will be well equipped to overcome any obstacle. We are positioned to fulfill our God given potential. The truth of the matter is that our outward appearance is a reflection of our innermost parts. And when we are sure that we are in Christ it will show in all we do. When the world is crumbling around us we will have the peace that surpasses all understanding and the assurance that salvation gives us. Jesus is our firm foundation and Thank God for that. Held east of Spearfish, SD, at the Seven Down Arenas, the sale featured 62 head of not only their own ranch-raised prospects, but also a select offering from guest consignors. Guys Best Bet, consigned by Bill & Deb Myers and sired by their senior sire Frenchmans Guy, drew considerable interest, leaving the ring after active bidding on a final bid of $56,000 from Harry LaToush from Kansas. The 2011 sorrel mare is out of Addicted To Cash, a proven producing full sister to Leading Sire Dash For Perks, and has produced race winners of $96,000. Also foaled in 2011 was Guys Sangria, a sorrel mare also sired by Frenchmans Guy and out of the AAA and AAA Stakes producer Hot Brandi N Wine. An earner of $14,576 on the track. Guys Sangria is a full sister to the Myers' Futurity Champion, Guys Champagne Girl, an Arena Record Setter and Pro Rodeo Money Earner. Topping the bidding action For Guys Sangria at $35,000 was Copper Spring Ranch from Bozeman, MT. Spader Ranch Annual Production Sale A great crowd greeted the 2013 Spader Ranch Annual Production Sale and K C Ranch Horse Classic, August 24, 2013 at Willow Springs Ranch Arena in Kansas City, KS. Buyers from nine states watched the sale riders showcase their abilities in the KC Ranch Horse Classic, an open ranch horse competition that started that morning. The contest was officiated by alltime NRHA great Brent Wright, Ottawa, KS. Not limited to sale horses, 32 contestants rounded out a solid field in the Open division, as well as the Ranch Horse Prospect division. After the contest, attendees enjoyed a free Cal Middleton clinic (www.calmiddleton.com), in which Cal provided instruction on advancing your horsemanship and shared tips that benefitted cowboys, performance horse trainers and weekend riders alike. Following the clinic, hundreds of buyers attended the sale or watched & bid on DV Auction. Sperry Horses Sales Results On a mild summer day with the badlands as a backdrop, Sperry Horses held their 10th Annual Sale in Medora, ND, on August 11. Selling that day were 64 performance horses, 25 weanlings and 2 bred broodmares. The weekend started with a ranch horse competition on Saturday morning, which drew 22 participants showing their talents in a trail class, reining pattern and branding pen. Lot 2, Goldendochickory owned by Sperry Horses, took first place. Lot 7, CK Travlin Smokey owned by Lance Gahardt was awarded second place. Third place was won by Justin Young with his horse lot 74, Mia Getta Lotto Play. Bringing in the 4th place title was Sperry Horses with lot 10, Zippers Caporal. Nate Horner with his Lot 3, YGW French Twist, brought home the 5th place title. What a success it was combining the Invitational Consignment Sale with the Sperry offering for a one day event. The performance horses averaged $5,728 and weanlings averaged $726 and bred broodmares averaged $2050. Not only did the hoses sell well, but a breast collar donated by Huntley Horses was auctioned off in honor of Kyle “Bud” Sperry, raising over $12,000 which will be awarded for college scholarships. HORSE GENETICS 101 Recharge Your Three Bars Base
Question:
What is considered a significant percentage of genes from a famous stallion to be a meaningful influence in your horse's pedigree and performance? Note: There are NO NEW GENES. What we have today are genes of the great quarter horses only DILUTED to the extent they are not SIGNIFICANT.
Answer: There are scientific rules of thumb that indicate influences of less than 10% tend to have NO significant effect on an individual. For instance, if LEO is in the 4th generation of your horse's pedigree one time, your horse has 6.25% LEO genes, which is NOT a SIGNIFICANT influence. Most really good performance horses today have 2, 3 or more crosses to Three Bars, yet the percentage of Three Bars genes is under 10%, again, NOT a significant amount.
