Equine Discussions with Cal Middleton

What do I look for when buying a broke horse to ride? One thing we have to do is establish our goal with the horse. Knowing what we are looking for is important, but no matter what the goal is there are some common principles that I use when helping a client select a horse, or selecting one for myself. First and foremost the horse needs to know how to accept pressure for me to be interested. How much pressure does the horse need to know how to accept? That may depend on the goals for the horse, experience of the rider, and the future plans for the horse's training. For example, let's say I am looking for a trail riding horse and I get on the horse and ride him down the ditch next to the road and he spooks when a car comes by and starts to run. What happens next is important. As the horse moves his feet as a reaction to being spooked by the car I would pick up my hands and pull on the horse to get his attention back on me. If the horse gives to the bit and relaxes into my hands, then that means the horse is accepting pressure at that moment. If the horse does not give to my hands and maybe puts his nose up and pushes through my hand or runs sideways to get away from the pressure, or rears up, then that means the horse is not accepting pressure at that moment. Another principle that I use when selecting a horse is the overall trainability of the horse. I can not expect every horse to be perfect, but during my first encounter with the horse I may try to see if I can get

him to learn something new or do things in a little different manner. I can then judge the horses trainability based on his reaction. Conformation and pedigree are also two important principles when selecting a horse. Both can be important, but neither are as important as trainability. Generally speaking, horses can be bred to do certain disciplines. But just because the horse is not bred or built for that discipline, it does not mean that the horse can not compete. There are always exceptions and this article is only scratching the surface of the important principles of selecting a horse. One final principle would be physical soundness. This can be a very confusing topic. It is important to remember that there are lame horses, there are crippled horses, there are sore horses. Then there are lots of horses that are still not quite

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Winter 2013

sound. It is not as black and white as yes or no. A veterinarian should not pass or fail a horse in a pre-purchase exam. There is something physically wrong with every horse; we have to decide what we can live with and what we can not, based on our goals, budget, future training plans, and our experience. I hope this helps broaden your thought process on buying a horse. I know this is all very vague and I will discuss more details in the future. Good luck with your purchase, and until next time, Ride Smarter Not Harder. Please send your questions to cal@calmiddleton.com Cal Middleton is a professional horse trainer in Ottawa, KS. Powders vs. Pellets From time to time I hear someone ask; what is the reason Silver Lining Herbs does not make a pellet or a crumble? I thought I would address this question in the form a short article. The art of natural healing is as old as the earth itself. When God walked with Adam and Eve He taught

baling or storing. Dry is easier to store. To answer the question of pellets and crumbles versus powder products, any time someone does something to anything, they have to be paid for it, thus the price reflects that cost. This is one important thing to consider when you

forcing some of the natural nutrients out of the feed that would be kept intact in a powdered product. Silver Lining Herbs has had a lot of years taking care of animals of all kinds and understands the repercussions of feeds and the effect on them. I guess you could say that after careful scrutiny we have decided God probably had it right in the first place. Mickey Young President Silver Lining Herbs

them about the vegetation and how to use it. From the beginning vegetation has served man and beast well. It has done so for the most part in its natural form of leaves, bark, flowers, roots, etc. With the advent of modern medicine the way God taught Adam and Eve in the beginning has undergone an astounding change. Modern medicine has changed the thought of many people and has also changed the way animals are being fed. Let us not forget that if the fences were to go away, animals would quickly learn to utilize what grows freely from the earth. The best feeds are feeds that are as close to their natural state as possible. There are very few companies that understand how a horse or dog eats in a natural environment. The only reason Silver Lining Herbs does not market live or freshly harvested vegetation instead of powder is because it is too difficult to use without molding. The same reason the hay is sun dried and cured before

make a product that can help as many animals as possible. So if you have to pay someone or own the equipment to make the pellet, someone has to pay that bill. The second thing one needs to consider, and no less important, is the quality of the finished product. To make a crumble or a pellet there is more than one way to accomplish this: 1. Something needs to be added to cause the product to stick together, i.e., molasses, corn syrup, etc. If you have done any research on natural health, you will quickly understand that sugars are avoided to accomplish health. This applies to horses and dogs as well as people. 2. Steam is another way it can be accomplished. But when heat and moisture are introduced you have a couple of things happen: first, moisture and heat together make a favorable combination for molding and bacteria; second, when there is high pressure combined with heat and moisture, you are also

Can I Ride With Spurs? By Richard Winters Spurs are associated with horsemanship, right alongside bits and saddles. Yet there remains confusion and sometimes intimidation in regard to their use in some riders’ minds. This article is an attempt to “demystify” spurs and discuss who should use them along with when and how. I’ve observed great horsemen and women all of my life. Whether they were English or Western riders, well over 90% of them rode with spurs. Beyond just looking cool, those riders understood the significant difference that spurs can make in communicating effectively with their horses. A few years ago, as I was addressing the use of spurs at a clinic, a participant was quick to say, “I sure don’t need spurs! My horse already goes too fast!” This gentleman misunderstood the primary reason for using spurs. Spurs are first and foremost used for lateral movement. Yes, it’s true, kicking a horse with both spurs might cause him to go faster (or get you bucked off!). However, that’s not the principal function of the spur. The specific, direct touch of a spur can be very effective in moving a horse’s body parts, left and right, whether it is his shoulders, rib cage or hind end. Along with being a very specific cue, the spur will also help you reinforce a leg cue that a horse might be ignoring. If your horse moves freely and willingly off your leg consistently without spurs, that’s great. Spurs however, will allow you to back up the suggestion of leg pressure should your horse choose to ignore the cue. Should you ride with spurs? My response would be, “Yes, as long as you can ride with an independent seat!” This means that you don’t grip below your knees to stay on or inadvertently poke your horse with the spurs unintentionally. I don’t ride with a perfect independent seat at all times. Therefore I remove my spurs when I begin training a colt. With so much unpredictability in the first couple rides, I don’t want to throw gasoline on the fire by accidently spuring my young horse. Once the colt is lined out and traveling comfortably, I’ll put my spurs back on and ride my horse with them for the rest of his life. WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Winter 2013

Photo above shows correct spur usage. With my toe pointed out, I can place the spur exactly where I want it. Photo below is incorrect.Without turning your toe out, the spur become less effective.

(This guy needs to pull up his back cinch!)

In order to properly cue your horse you need to know where to correctly position your spur, on your horse’s side. The angle of your foot is very important. Turning your toe out and down will allow you to strategically place your spur right where you want it. There are three general areas, on your horse’s side, to place your spur. 1) Forward: Close to the front cinch. This area is most effective in moving your horse’s shoulders left and right. 2) Middle: Right where your leg naturally hangs. This moves your horse’s ribcage laterally as you would in a side pass. 3) Back: When you place your spur close to where the back cinch would lie, you are able to control your horse’s hindquarters in both directions.

You will not achieve the full benefit of using spurs until your learn to turn your toe out and down. If your horse has not yet become accustomed to spurs then you have the responsibility to introduce him to their effect without scaring him. You can even do this as a ground exercise, while holding the spur in your hand. Always be smooth. There is rarely a reason to poke your horse with the spur. Slowly pressing with your spur and then releasing when the desired step is achieved will give you the best results. As with any training technique; remember to be firm as necessary yet gentle as possible. Spurs are not cruel or inhumane. No more than a bit in your horse’s mouth. When abuse takes place it has little to do with

the object and everything to do with the handler. Great horsemen, and women, use spurs to refine maneuvers and develop higher degrees of subtle communication. With some clear direction, understanding and practice, this piece of equipment can help you reach the next level on your horsemanship journey. Mares with More

FL Lady Bug From Ranch Horse to Hall of Fame By Larry Thornton

FL Lady Bug is a legend in the annals of quarter horse history. She started life as an everyday ranch broodmare and ended up in the AQHA Hall of Fame for her contribution to quarter horse racing. She is the dam of horses like Lady Bug’s Moon, a major sire in the racehorse industry that is found in the that have run in the All American Futurity. Plus Lady Bug’s Moon and Bugs Alive in 75 made major contributions to modern barrel racing, adding another dimension to the great FL Lady Bug, making her one of our Mares with More. FL Lady Bug was born in 1945 and her breeder was W. A. Yeager of Woodward, OK. She was sired by Sergeant and out of Yeager’s Lady JA by Will Stead. Her pedigree is one strong argument for the practice of inbreeding. Sergeant was bred by S. B. Barnes of Tulia, TX. Yeager’s Lady JA was bred by the famed JA Ranch of Paloduro, TX, and she was registered in the AQHA by Yeager. The sire of Sergeant was Billy McCue who was sired by Jack McCue by Peter McCue. The dam of Jack McCue was Marguerite by Barlow by Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was a grandson of Old Billy. The dam of Billy McCue was Sorrel Alice by Chickasha Bob. Chickasha Bob was sired by Texas Chief by Lock’s Rondo. Sorrel Alice was out of Maud by Old Billy. Maud was out of Old Alice by Old Billy. This gives Billy McCue a breeding pattern of 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. Old Billy was sired by Shiloh and out of Ram Cat by Steel Dust. The sire of Yeager’s Lady JA was Will Stead, a full brother to Sergeant, the sire of FL Lady Bug. This gives this foundation bred mare a breeding pattern of 7 X 7 X 7 X 4 Page 34

X 5 X 6 X 6 X 6 X 3 X 4 to Old Billy. W. A. Yeager was her first owner and when she died she was owned by Marvin Barnes of Ada, OK. In between she changed hands nine times. Her official AQHA record shows that she was unshown and unraced, but she is credited with winning a weanling halter class. The article “The Barnes…Love Those Bugs,” in the April 1973 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal, verifies that she won this class in August 1945 at Stillwater, OK. Shortly after, the weanling filly made her first move to a new owner, the Flying L Ranch of Davis, OK, owned by V. B. Likins. The Flying L

Ranch bought both FL Lady Bug and her dam Yeager’s Lady JA. It was the Flying L Ranch that registered FL Lady Bug, thus the prefix FL at the beginning of her name. The purchase price was $150. The Flying L Ranch kept her until she was about four years old. So between 1945 and 1949 she was on the Flying L Ranch producing her first foal for them in 1949. That foal was Dusty Laddy by Stormy Page Day. 75 Dusty Laddy has no race or show record in the AQHA internet records and is listed as bred by Alice Likins. The next foal out of FL Lady Bug was Rocky Bert, a gelding by Bert P-227. This gelding was bred by Glen McDaniel of Pontotc County, OK, the third owner. Rocky Bert, born in 1952, is the first indication of what was to come from the ranch mare that would become a major source of speed. He was an AA rated racehorse with his ROM, winning eight of his 13 races. He was also an AQHA performance point earner. Lady Shelly by Star Deck was the next foal out of FL Lady Bug.

The next McDaniel foal weanling filly for the mare and that seconds in 13 starts and an AAA out of FL Lady Bug was Stob by Dunny D in 1955. This horse was unshown and unraced in the AQHA. Lady Lasan by Cowan’s Lasan is the next foal out of FL Lady Bug. This is where Marvin Barnes of Ada, OK, steps into the picture. He bought FL Lady Bug in 1958 bred to Cowan’s Lasan. He bought her from Forrest Simpson of Ada, OK, who had bought her from McDaniel. “I bought her off a friend of mine, Forest Simpson,” Barnes recalls. “Forest had a big ranch at Fittstown, OK. This ole boy came by one day and said, ‘Marvin, you want to buy a good mare?’ Well I was trading horses and I said, ‘Yeah!’ and then I said, ‘Why?’ He said, ‘Well your buddy Forest has a good lookin’ mare.’ He told me she was at the ranch at Fittstown. I knew right where that ranch was. He said, ‘You go up that road where the ranch is and she will be under that broad oak Bugs Alive In 75 was the 1975 All American winner that made a great contribution to the legacy of FL Lady Bug in the Barrel tree.’ Racing industry. This mare has no produce Chickasha Bob record. Sorrel Alice The irony of all this is that Maud (Allen Borden Mare) Barnes had not only been selling FL Sergeant Lady Bug but her offspring as well Texas Chief and then had to buy them back when Chickasha Bob he realized what was taking place Mary Keith with the family of FL Lady Bug. Barnes wanted to prove his mare Silver through her offspring and get as Old Billy many of her foals an ROM on the Maud (Allen Borden Mare) track as possible. Old Alice “After they started really running a guy told me about a big ole horse out of her named Rocky Bert,” FL Lady Bug Barnes says. “They roped on him on Saturday night and match raced him Peter McCue on Sunday and they couldn’t find Jack McCue anything that could outrun him. Marthas Six Moons. This gives CS Flashlight a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Lady Bug’s Moon. Easanon is the dam of four more stakes winners in CS Night Light, CS Arc Light, CS Limelight and CS Strobelight. In fact this mare accounts for four Minnesota Futurity winners. CS Flashlight foals are just getting started in the arena after a good start in the sale arena. His foals have made him the #8 leading sire of horses sold. His average was $10,125 and in 2012 he increased that average by 39% to $14,100. Darkelly is a son of First Down Kelly and the mare Shawne Kate by Shawne Bug. This gives him a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Lady Bug’s Moon. He is a stakes winner of the Blue Ribbon Futurity and the sire of race winners of over $329,000. His barrel horses have won in excess of $72,000, including DWS First, winner of $18,250, and Bully Bullion, winner of $17,724. Some of his more recent winners are Kellie Chick who was the #26 barrel futurity money winner in 2012. This horse was the winner of the 2013 OKC Summer Shootout Championship in the 1D shootout. The story of FL Lady Bug shows that we often find a diamond in the rough and that the diamond can be a very significant contributor in the scheme of things. FL Lady Bug was that kind of mare and she defied the odds when Marvin sold her three times. Yet each time she returned to his barn to fulfill her destiny as one of our Mares With More. By the way Marvin is 93 and he has another racehorse in the barn with ties to FL Lady Bug. He is for sale.

Working Lines Joe Kirk Fulton

Major Contributions to Great Lines of Working Horses

By Larry Thornton

When Joe Kirk Fulton passed away on August 1, 2013, we lost a giant in our industry. Joe Kirk Fulton will be remembered for his racehorses including his running champions such as Dashs Dream and Special Leader. He is third on the list of all time leading breeders of racehorse money earners, having bred the winners of over $17 million. In addition Fulton will be remembered for great halter horses, performance horses and working ranch horses. The horses that make the halter and performance list include Aledo Bar and Peppy San Badger. His contributions to the breed have made him an AQHA Hall of Fame member. Joe Kirk Fulton started his public career with horses as the original “Red Rider” mascot for the Red Raiders of Texas Tech University. The Red Rider debuted at the Gator Bowl in 1954 and Fulton would continue in the role for three more years. Upon graduation he went into business with his father R. H. Fulton. They were ranchers, oil men and bankers. The ranching enterprise is known today as Fulton Quien Sabe Ranch. The horse that marks the entrance of Joe Kirk Fulton as a horse breeder was a broodmare named Susie F, bought as a baby from Hall of Fame breeder J. W. Shoemaker of Watrous, NM. She was a 1945 filly sired by Golddust Shoemaker by Nick and out of Slippers II by Nick. This makes Susie F 2 X 2 inbred to Nick. Fulton described Susie F as his kind of mare, because there was “not a lot

This is the famous photo of Aledo Bar that would greet you at the front of The American Quarter Horse Journal. It shows just what Joe Kirk Fulton was talking about when it came to his horses’ conformation and good looks. Poco Susie was the dam of Mr Aledo Bar, a Superior Halter Horse by Aledo Bar. Another foal out of Susie F was King‘s Sukey, an ROM performer sired by King P-234. The influence of King’s Sukey in the Fulton program came through her son Phantom Bar by Three Chicks. This stallion was headed for stardom, but his life was cut short. Before he died he sired Swift Reaper, the 1982 High

Point Western Pleasure Horse and AQHA Champion with Superiors in open and youth western pleasure. He also sired Exterminator Bar who held Superiors in youth western horsemanship, youth western pleasure, youth showmanship, open western pleasure and open halter. Both of these performers were out of daughters of Aledo Bar, the first senior sire for Joe Kirk Fulton’s Quien Sabe Ranch. It was Aledo Bar that put Fulton into the mainstream as a breeder of top performance and halter horses. The Aledo Bar show record includes the AQHA Honor Roll Halter Stallion title in 1959. He earned 70 halter points, 14 reining points and a Superior in halter to go with an AQHA Championship. He sired 161 foals with 66 performers earning 34 ROM, 17 AQHA Championships, 25 Superior Halter and Performance Awards and three AQHA High Point Halter Horse titles. Aledo Bar died at the age of 10 from a broken neck sustained in a freak accident while playing in this paddock. He left a legacy of halter and performance champions. Aledo Bar, bred by the late B. F. Phillips, Jr., of Frisco, TX, was purchased by Fulton. “I didn't actually go out and find Aledo Bar,” Fulton said. “B. F. Phillips was showing him and I admired the horse. B. F. and I were good friends and I told him that if he ever wanted to sell the colt, I'd like to have him. Well, B. F. told me that if he found a colt similar to Aledo Bar, he'd let me have him. He did find one but it didn't excite me.” “So to make a long story short,”

Fulton continued, “B. F. finally called me and said he would sell, and I had first option, so I bought him.” Aledo Bar was a two-year-old. When asked why he wanted Aledo Bar, Fulton responded quickly with “his conformation.” He liked the way Aledo Bar was put together. One of the leading admirers of Aledo Par was the late Wayne Pooley. He worked for his friend Joe Kirk Fulton, showing some of the offspring of Aledo Bar.

“...in the racehorse business the head is not as important. I had an old mare that had an ugly head, until she crossed the finish line first.” Joe Kirk Fulton

“I had the greatest respect and admiration for that horse, as an individual and as a sire, he said of Aledo Bar. “He had been the Honor Roll Halter Stallion himself and out of his first crop of colts he sired Aledo Bar’s Lady, the Honor Roll Halter Horse and Bar's Choice, the Honor Roll Two-Year-Old Halter Stallion in the nation. So out of that first crop, he got off to a really good start. "Aledo Bar was not a real large horse,” Pooley continued. “Just about 15 hands, but an ideal conformation horse. He was a tremendous athlete but developed some problems in his stifles. Jack Adkins trained Aledo Bar. Jack worked for Joe Kirk prior to the time I went to work for him. I knew Jack real well, we were good friends.” Conformation played a important part in Fulton’s breeding program. "I look for balance,” he

said. “A long hip that carries down, a good gaskin muscle, good neck and head.” Pausing, he added, “I have found in the racehorse business that the head is not as important. I had an old mare that had an ugly head, until she crossed the finish line first. I think good feet and legs are important, I am not as concerned about the size of bone, not as long as it is a good flat bone.” Fulton said he Aledolita Bar one of the three AQHA Honor developed his eye for Roll Halter Horses sired by Aledo Bar. great halter mare, but all the other show horses we raised right there at the ranch. We trained them and showed them. “That’s the way people used to do it years ago,” Pooley said. “Then we got away from that. That is the proof of a good breeder when you can develop a program and you can raise, train and show home bred horses.” Noting Aledo Bar’s ability to cross with mares that carry the blood of King, Pooley said, “Those King bred mares were an outstanding cross with Aledo Bar. But the unique thing about Aledo Bar was that he crossed with almost any kind of mare you bred him to. “I felt like you could breed him to just about any kind of mare and you were going to raise a colt that was far above average as a halter horse and, if you gave them the opportunity, they could all do something. “I had a little gelding by Aledo Bar and out of a Poco Dell mare that was a tremendous calf horse,” he recalled. “I showed him in the calf roping and I showed him at halter at the same time. He was Reserve Champion Gelding at the Dallas Fair one year. If you gave those horses a chance to do something they could do it.” His name was Fulton’s Hill Bar and he was out of Poco Violet Hill by Poco Dell by Poco Bueno by King P-234. The dam of Poco Violet Hill was the great mare Mayflower Daugherty. A look at Aledo Bar’s AQHA Champions brings the thoughts and words of Pooley and Fulton into focus. Aledo Bar sired 17 AQHA Champions with 13 of them being AQHA Superior Halter horses, strong proof that Aledo Bar consistently bred good-looking horses that performed. Aledo Bar’s Lady is typical of this pattern. She was the 1963 AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse. She earned 178 halter points with 21 cutting points and 17 reining points.

Fulton described Aledo Bar's Lady: “She had balance with overall eye appeal. She was a straight good moving mare. She was the kind that no matter who judged, they all liked her. And I liked her disposition.” She was Fulton's personal riding horse. The dam of Aledo Bar's Lady was Lady Charcoal. This mare was sired by Nifty Pep and out of Pretty Lady XS. Nifty Pep was sired by Pep-Up by Macanudo. The dam of Nifty Pep was Lady Bailey II by Bailey by Old Joe Bailey. Additionally, Pep-Up was the broodmare sire of Poco Dell, the sire of Poco Violet Hill. Lady Charcoal was the dam of a full sister to Aledo Bar's Lady named Lady Charbar. Lady Charbar earned 6 halter points. She was the dam of

Swift Reaper, the 1972 AQHA High Point Western Pleasure Horse who was sired by Phantom Bar. The second AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse sired by Aledo Bar shows us that not all of the good show horses were bred by Fulton. Aledolita Bar was the 1966 AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse. This mare set a single year record for halter points when she earned 276 points to win the title. She was bred by Mary Anne Parris. Aledolita Bar earned 580 halter points and 24 western pleasure points. She was Superior in halter and an AQHA Champion. Aledolita Bar had two AQHA Champion full sisters: Lady Aledo Bar and Ima Star Too. Lady Aledo Bar earned 143 halter points and 21.5 western pleasure points and .5

Ima Star Too earned her AQHA Championship with 117 halter points, 25 western pleasure points and 1 hunter under saddle point. All three of these mares produced ROM show horses The dam of these three mares was Miss Red Ant. Miss Red Ant was sired by Little Jodie by Little Joe Springer. The dam of Little Jodie was Dixie Beach who was sired by Beetch’s Yellow Jacket. making the three mares 6 X 4 linebred to Beetch’s Yellow Jacket. Beetch’s Yellow Jacket was the sire of Mike Beetch. Mike Beetch was the sire of Triangle Lady I, the dam of Joan, the dam of Steel Bars. Miss Red Ant was out of a mare called Sally by Bar Hunter II, a thoroughbred. The third AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse sired by Aledo Bar was Lady Gaines who earned 331 halter points to win her title. She was an AQHA Champion and Superior Halter Horse with 441 halter points and 13.5 western pleasure points She was the dam of three point earners including the ROM Iola Reyna by Lightning Rey. The dam of Lady Gaines was Daisy Skip by Skipity Skip. Skipity Skip was a son of Skipper W and the blue hen mare Joy Ann by Gold Mount. The dam of Daisy Skip was Royal Daisy by Royal King by King P-234. This makes Lady Gaines 3 X 4 linebred to King P-234. The legacy of Aledo Bar continues today through horses such as his grandson Torino who was sired by Ledo Bar by Aledo Bar. Torino follows the pattern of an Aledo Bar bred horse. He is an AQHA Champion with a Superior in halter. He has 55 halter points, 2 cutting points, 9 reining points, 23 western pleasure points and 5 hunt seat points. Torino was the sire of such noted horses as Robert Redford, The Continental and Golden Cherokee. Robert Redford was an AQHA

Bar's Choice was the 1963 Honor Roll Two-Year-Old Halter Stallion by Aledo Bar, earning 159 halter points, 2 cutting points, 5 reining points and 16 western pleasure points. Bar's Choice sired Nifty's Choice, an AQHA Superior Western Pleasure Horse and a Superior Halter Horse as well as an AQHA Champion. Aledo Bar's Ben was another AQHA Champion and a Superior Western Pleasure Horse sired by Aledo Bar.

The dam of Aledo Bar's Ben and Bar’s Choice was Sugar Townley. The sire of Sugar Townley was Lucky Jim by Redwood. The dam of Sugar Townley was a mare listed as an R. J. Clark mare, whose breeding was unknown. Sugar Townley became a Fulton Ranch broodmare. Sugar Townley made a great contribution to the Fulton program through her foals and the foals of her daughter, Sugar Badger. Fulton purchased Sugar Badger and her dam from Alvis Townley, her breeder, and his partner in Sugar Badger, George Humphreys. Humphreys was the long time manager of the famed 6666 Ranch of the Burnett Estate. Fulton reported that he bought Sugar Badger as a broodmare prospect because of her sire, Grey Badger III, a stallion that Fulton would own and stand. “Grey Badger III foals were excellent cow horses,” Fulton said. “Most of them would buck with you, if you laid off them for three or four days, especially on a cool morning. But they were darn good cow horses. In fact we thought they were about as good a ranch horse as we had ever raised.” Fulton said that they used Grey Badger III for about 10 years on their ranch and that he improved the quality of ranch horses they raised and used.

great racing stallion, Flaming Jet. These two daughters of Sugar Badger are unshown and unraced in the AQHA. Sugar Badger didn't produce a foal in 1978 but she did return to the court of Mr San Peppy. The foal produced was Sugar Pep Leo, a full brother to “Little Peppy,” foaled in 1979. Sugar Pep Leo was an NCHA Futurity Semi-finalist and an NCHA Derby Semi-finalist. His NCHA earnings of $5,239 have earned this stallion his Certificate of Ability. Sugar Badger returned one more time to the court of Mr San Peppy to produce Phantom Peppy. Phantom Peppy has no show record, but he is the sire of Peppy Star Rio, the winner of such prestigious cutting events as the NCHA Open Super Stakes and the NCHA Open Derby. In 1982, Joe Kirk Fulton entered Sugar Badger into the last phase of her productive life. Fulton and B. F. Phillips, Jr., became partners in a lease agreement to breed Sugar Badger to the great cutting horse sire

Doc 0'Lena. Sugar Badger produced the foals Docs Little Sugar and Lenas Little Sugar. Docs Little Sugar was sold in the Heritage Western Sale in 1984 for $75,000. She went on to become a Semi-finalist in the NCHA Futurity and an NCHA Certificate of Ability holder with $6,903 earnings. Her grandget include Hallmarks Trinket, with 57.5 AQHA open points and 77.5 amateur points with an Amateur Superior in Team Penning. Another performer out of Docs Little Sugar was Hallmarks San Peppy with 216 Open, 55.5 Amateur and 34 youth points in the AQHA. She was an AQHA Superior performer in team penning and ranch sorting. Both of these performers were sired by Mr San Peppy and out of Tweets a daughter of Docs Little Sugar. Lenas Little Sugar was the last foal out of Sugar Badger. She was raised by a nurse mare after the death of Sugar Badger. Lenas Little Sugar was in cutting training when

B. F. Phillips died in 1987. She was never shown and Fulton retained Lenas Little Sugar for his broodmare band. She is the dam of only three foals and one of those was Miss N Sugar who won $11,950 in the NCHA with one AQHA performance point. Miss N Sugar never produced an AQHA registered foal. The working horse contribution of Joe Kirk Fulton has faded into history somewhat with the passage of time. But that doesn’t diminish his contribution to the modern quarter horse, with Peppy San Badger still a major force in the performance horse industry. Perhaps more important to remember about Joe Kirk Fulton is his philosophy of breeding: a good horse started with good conformation as it relates to performance. He also believed in the power of the mare in his breeding program and we should follow this example as well. So thank you Joe Kirk Fulton, the original “Red Rider,” for your contribution to the modern working horse. Your legacy will live on.

JD Yates: Team Roping Legend & All-American Caballero By Chris Kelly To list all of JD Yates accomplishments and accolades would fill most of this page. But true American cowboy that he is, the famed roper prizes his close family above all else. “I feel fortunate to have won all that I have. But having a family as close as ours is my biggest accomplishment,” says the man who first qualified for the NFR at the age of 15, one of the youngest competitors ever to make it to the biggest event a cowboy can aspire to. It was 1975 and he was heeling for his Dad Dick Yates. “It was my goal to get to the NFR, but at the time I don’t think I really appreciated the status of competing there, being with the best in the world,” Yates says. He qualified again the next year, but by then he understood what it all meant and he felt he didn’t do his best. “That first year took it’s toll, and the second year wasn’t quite as good,” he notes. JD and his father went on to qualify for the NFR another nine times. Altogether JD has been to the NFR 22 times, usually with his favorite roping partner, cousin Jay Wadhams. These days Dick Yates, at 76, still ropes every day. Son Trey, now a freshman in college, has followed the family tradition, roping at Little Britches and high school rodeos. JD proudly lists Trey’s top accomplishments: 2009 AQHA World Champion in Youth Heeling, Reserve Champion in Youth Heeling and Reserve Champion in Youth Breakaway Roping “There’s nothing like watching

JD and son Trey at the 31st annual George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio last March. For the Yates, team roping is a family affair. Photo courtesy of Yates Family. Trey out in the arena working with his grandfather,” Yates says. “My father still strives to get better and ropes with us every day. He competes and he likes to win as we all do.” Rounding out the family business is JD’s sister, Kelly Yates, a barrel racer. It’s a busy arena at the family ranch, Hitchrack Performance Horses outside of Pueblo, CO. However for JD the emphasis isn’t on rodeo competition, but roping shows. Most of the horses on the ranch now belong to clients. “We still own some rodeo horses and now and then we’ll just pick up and go to a rodeo,” JD says. “but my main business is show horses and I devote my time to training and showing them.” The desire to compete and win hasn’t waned a bit over the years; if anything it’s increased. “It’s tougher every year,” Yates

says. “I have to compete against guys half my age. I consider it a moral victory if I can just keep up with them.” But of course he does more than keep up with them. Recent titles include the prestigious Bob Feist Invitational in 2010 where he and his favorite partner, cousin Jay Wadhams, completed six ropings in a total of 45.92 seconds, an average of 7.6 seconds a go. They walked away with $131,510. a hefty payday for less than a minute's work! Yates has 38 AQHA championships under his buckle, with four Superhorse titles, the most recent in 2012, Chex This Dually owned by Donald Tisdall. All told, Yates has won over $1.3 million in his career. Since he rides client horses now, he can’t really name a favorite. If he has to name one, he goes back to the

Photo by Jerry Gustafson. horse his parents raised which saw him to many a win – Flits Friend. “Everybody knew him as Pac Man,” Yates says, adding that the gray gelding died last year. Yates isn't an intense follower of pedigrees as some trainers are. “I train each horse on his own abilities,” he says. In fact, Yates plays down the roper's skill to some degree when it comes to competitions. “It's all about the horse. If I don't win or at least compete well, then I didn't train the horse well. It all reverts back to horsemanship. A well-trained horse puts the roper in the right position. The horse knows his job.” So what does the all-American cowboy who has won just about every title there is, and more than once, look forward to in his career? Spending more time in Brazil. Brazil? As in South America? Yep. It all started when a Brazilian roper Rafael Paoliello came to JD to

study his training and roping techniques so he could launch his own business in Brazil. Yates shared his knowledge, then went to Brazil to help Paoliello get started. “I discovered I liked Brazil," Yates says. “I like going to their shows. I like the people. I just like being there. “We don't do anything differently there,“ he continues. “We ride horses all day, train, train, train, and then go to shows on weekends, just as we do here. I just really enjoy it there.” He has become an integral part of the team roping scene in Brazil, recently winning the championship at the Brazil Congress an event similar to the AQHA World Show, with his partner, Paoliello. “If I ever retire, which I don't Yates heading to a World Champlan to do for a long while yet, pionship on Dancing with Heart, I'd like to retire in Brazil,” Yates owned by Dixon Flowers Quarter Horses. says. “But I wouldn't go unless I could take the whole family.”

Spiritual Food From God's Feed Truck The outside image of a horses foot when read properly is a reflection of the inner most parts of the hoof. To the farrier who has been trained to accurately assess hoof wall distortion, it will be apparent what needs to be done to the foot in order to achieve balance. This will position the horse to perform up to his maximum, God-given potential. However, traditional ways of shoeing horses deal primarily with outward appearance and often do not deal with the position of the hoof as it relates to the internal structure of the horses foot. When a farrier places the shoe onto a foot without considering the mechanics of motion, weight bearing and bone alignment, he will often position the horse to be compromised in his movement and performance. Essentially what happens is the foot is continuously being forced forward, and the weight of the horse is coming down behind the support of the foot creating a continual slipping off of the foundation. Without a firm foundation the horse is set up for all sorts of problems in his future. This reminds me of the old hymn we often sing in church, How Firm the Foundation. There are so many parallels to our faith in Jesus and working with horses that you almost can not separate the two. Just like the horse slipping off his firm foundation, when we lose our focus on whom our foundation lies and try to build our lives on the shaky foundation the world has to offer, we set ourselves up for disappointment and painful times in our future. However when we focus on the finished work that Jesus did for us on the cross, our foundation will be firm and no matter what comes our way the Grace of God will have us and we will be well equipped to overcome any obstacle. We are positioned to fulfill our God given potential. The truth of the matter is that our outward appearance is a reflection of our innermost parts. And when we are sure that we are in Christ it will show in all we do. When the world is crumbling around us we will have the peace that surpasses all understanding and the assurance that salvation gives us. Jesus is our firm foundation and Thank God for that. comprehensive equine supplement

“Nutrition is the core. You must have the right nutrition in order to maximize your performance,” states Justin Ritthaler, DVM at Weatherford Equine. Forging new frontiers in total equine performance nutrition, the Core Balance mission is to provide a complete line of fully balanced horse supplements applicable to every equine discipline. Manufactured in the United States, the Core Balance products are created using the highest quality ingredients with no fillers, additives or binders, and are guaranteed to provide enough vitamins and minerals to maximize their benefits. There isn’t any ingredient in any Core Balance product that isn’t at the correct level to benefit the horse. The Core Balance Training Formulas are specifically designed for overall nutrition including healthy joint function, hoof support, digestive system protection and immune support with natural antioxidants. It is available in both Grass Hay Only or Alfalfa Blend to accommodate your individual feeding program. Core Motion is extremely beneficial for those joints that need

extra support due to demanding use, old age or other joint conditions. It is comprised of a high quality hyaluronic acid that helps protect joints and cartilage. A daily dosage treats all the joints throughout the body. Core Builder is for the horse that needs extra energy or more body mass. It promotes better utilization of nutrition while increasing appetite, bloom, noticeable weight gain and endurance without the hormonal side effects of anabolic steroids. The Developmental Formulas provides overall nutrition for broodmares, stallions and foals up to riding age. With the demands of today’s rigorous competition, it is imperative to support your equine athlete from inception. The Developmental Formula assists in the proper gestational development of the unborn foal. Core Calmer is an all-natural calming powder for competition, layups and stressful situations and is legal for all disciplines. For years trainers, competitors, breeders and horse owners alike have been searching for the safest and most natural products to increase their horses’ strength, stamina, growth and overall health. Success begins with a solid foundation and Core Balance delivers just that. You will notice the results which can be seen by their customer’s consistant 96% re-order rate. “When I ask my horses for their ultimate effort, I want to make sure I have given them the ultimate supplement - Core Balance,” says Tim Smith, NCHA Hall of Fame Rider and Trainer with winnings over $5 million. Core Balance products are available through your local veterinarian, can be purchased on their website, www.CoreBalanceus. com or by calling (805) 878-3342. HORSE GENETICS 101 Recharge Your Three Bars Base

Question:

What is considered a significant percentage of genes from a famous stallion to be a meaningful influence in your horse's pedigree and performance? Note: There are NO NEW GENES. What we have today are genes of the great quarter horses only DILUTED to the extent they are not SIGNIFICANT.

Answer: There are scientific rules of thumb that indicate influences of less than 10% tend to have NO significant effect on an individual. For instance, if LEO is in the 4th generation of your horse's pedigree one time, your horse has 6.25% LEO genes, which is NOT a SIGNIFICANT influence. Most really good performance horses today have 2, 3 or more crosses to Three Bars, yet the percentage of Three Bars genes is under 10%, again, NOT a significant amount. You can recharge that base with 24 to 26% more Three Bars genes to create better athletes, speed and versatility. THREE BARS GENETICS Robert Miller Call: 563-299-6177 Page 84
