Equine Discussions with Cal Middleton

Teaching a Horse to Cross Tie I put my 3 year old in cross ties for the first time and she twisted around and pulled back until the cross ties broke. Do you have any suggestions on how I should handle this ? Cross ties can be a very efficient way to tack horses up in the barn. However, teaching a horse to accept being cross tied does present a few issues, and it is important that we go about teaching the horse how to accept cross ties in the correct way. First, your horse needs to understand how to accept pressure. When you pull on the lead rope, the horse must learn to follow that feel and give in to that pressure. It’s important that your horse can, and will, give to that pressure in all directions by moving his feet, forwards, backwards, left and right. Horses have an innate fear of moving their feet while giving in to pressure. Once we can break thorugh that fear by making them feel safe enough to give in to pressure and move their feet in a relaxed manner when pressure is applied, we are really starting to get them on our side. That has to be done before a horse is ever tied up solid to a wall or post, or trapped in any type of situation like cross ties or hobbles. Once a horse is taught to give to pressure, then let it spend time tied solid to a post or a wall. Let them learn to be patient, and stand relaxed. If they pull back consistently, take a few wraps around a top bar or use a tie ring type piece of equipment (so they are not tied solid), and encourage them to follow their nose with their feet back and forth by using a flag or rope. Once they learn to move their feet they quit fighting the rope.

So, after you have the horse to where he stands solid, now he is ready for cross ties. The first few times you introduce your horse to cross ties is very crucial. Here are 6 steps that I would generally follow. 1. Get your horse out and work it a little, so it’s giving to pressure and in a relaxed state of mind before going into the cross tie area. 2. Use your long lead rope to settle the horse in the cross tie area while you are standing a good distance away. When it comes forward back it up and make it stand there on its own. If it won’t stand still, go back to moving your horse’s feet in a different area of the arena or barn, until it’s more ready to stand relaxed. 3. Hook up one side of the cross ties and use your lead rope to the pull the horse forward and away from the cross tie until the cross tie becomes tight and the horse feels the pressure. .The horse may react by pushing through it, or maybe by looking into it and swinging his hindquarters away from it. Keep the horse‘s body straight and use your lead rope to help back it up a few steps until it finds the release of being in the right area. Then let the horse stand relaxed for a few moments. 4. Push your horse backwards until the cross ties become tight and once again pressure is applied to the halter of the horse. Now, use your lead rope to gently encourage the horse to move forward into the release area. Sometimes it may help to have someone stand behind the horse to encourage forward motion. Let the horse stand relaxed in the “safe zone” of release that it has created for itself. 5. Unhook the first cross tie and hook up opposite side, then repeat the forward and back process until horse

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Stallion Issue 2014

is looking forward to settling in the middle safe zone. By using only one side at a time you can help the horse avoid feeling quite as trapped and avoid a wreck the first few times. If your horse seems pretty edgy and worried about using only one side, then I would repeat the same for a few days until the horse seems to be more confident and content with all that’s going on. 6. Once your horse seems ok to move on, then I would hook up both sides and do the same process of going forwards and then backwards, always letting the horse relax anytime it wants to find the safe zone in the middle. Now, for a few dos and don'ts of cross tying: In the beginning stages, only use them at the end of the training session when the horse should be more relaxed and willing to stand still, not at the beginning when she is fresh. Don’t leave your horse in cross ties very long so he won't get bored there. Keep him thinking it's a good place to be. Do not saddle or unsaddle a young horse while cross tied, only groom her and do the things that make her feel good. Never leave the horse tied with only one cross tie secure, this will only teach them bad habits and is unsafe. Email your questions to cal@ calmiddleton.com and until next time; ride smarter, not harder!

Mares With More

Casey's Ladylove is the foundation of the Frenchman line of performance horses. She started life as a family show mare and is now one of the great blue hen mares of the American Quarter Horse. Photo Courtesy of the photographer Larry Larson

Casey’s Ladylove and the Frenchman Line By Larry Thornton One of the keys to good horse breeding is the development of families of horses within the breed. We see a lot of the different families in the Mares With More column because many of these families were built through a foundation mare–thus a mare with more. These families develop out of a number of scenarios, from the deliberate development of the line by a breeder to the circumstances in life that lead to the development of a family of horses. The Frenchman line of horses was developed by James and Frances Loiseau of South Dakota, a line of horses noted mostly for their success in the barrel arena But they are just as comfortable as racehorses, roping horses, cutting horses, working cow horses and bulldogging horses. The founder of this family of horses is Casey’s Ladylove. Elisabeth “Lis” Loiseau Hollmann, daughter of James and Frances Loiseau, recalled how it all began with her families modest beginnings in the show horse world. “Mom and Dad were farmers in Eastern South Dakota and there were eight of us children in the family. We used to go to horse shows every Saturday and Sunday. We would milk the cows in the morning, then load the horses into a bumper pull trailer that would hold five or six horses in it. Then in the pickup with a stock rack on it they would put two ponies and a Welsh horse for the little kids and we would head off to the horse show. Page 26

“I remember we were always late because we had to get the cows milked,” she continued. “They would unhook the horse trailer and jump the ponies out of the stock rack, saddle them up throw the two youngest kids on the ponies and send them into the pony classes.” With a family of eight children came the dilemma of having enough good show horses for everybody. So the Loiseaus decided to get a “show horse factory” and that is how Casey’s Ladylove came to the Loiseau family. “Mom and Dad bought Casey’s Ladylove at a horse sale in Minnesota, “ Lis said. “She was a buckskin and a two-year-old at the time. When they saw the mare, they thought she was just beautiful. She had an enormous hip and a beautiful head. “They were watching for her to come into the ring and Dad had left to look at more horses, so he wasn’t sitting in the stands. Therefore, when the mare came into the ring, Mom bought the horse for $720. So when Dad came back he said, ‘Frances has that buckskin mare come through?’ She said, ‘Yes and I bought her.’ That was the first time Mom had made an expenditure like that without Dad being there. And he said ‘Good for you!’ She was the high seller in the sale and they were pretty excited about their new mare.” Casey’s Ladylove first job was as a show horse .“I was pretty young at the time but what I recall was that they showed her a little bit and my older sister Barbara rode her a lot. She showed her in western pleasure and

other events,” Lis said Lis recalled a discovery about Casey’s Ladylove that has played a key role in this family of horses,.“ I remember one night we were riding our horses in the yard. We were practicing and a little horse race broke out between my brother and sister with my sister riding Casey’s Ladylove. After the race, I remember them saying ‘She was like a jack rabbit she was so fast. ‘ ” Casey’s Ladlylove came with speed and good conformation through her pedigree. Her sire is Casey’s Poco, a 1955 stallion sired by Poco Dun by Poco Bueno and out of Pretty Doll by Pretty Buck. The dam of Pretty Doll is Dolly D by Blackburn. Poco Dun was an ROM sire with foals like Pretty Jim and also the sire of several producing daughters, including Copper Owen dam of Sanocko, the 1973 AQHA High Point Pole Bending Gelding. The dam of Casey’s Poco was Miss Casey by Tadpole. Tadpole was bred by the AQHA Hall of Fame member Jack Casement. who bred many fine horses, including Red Dog, the sire of Tadpole. Red Dog was sired by the Casement foundation sire Balleymooney. Balleymooney was sired by Colonel Concho by Jim Ned. Jim Ned was a grandson of the foundation sire Old Billy, and was a stallion for William Anson, the Englishman who came to Texas to become a Texas rancher and horse breeder. Anson is credited with putting information out about the “Steel Dust” horses that became the American Quarter Horse. The dam of Red Dog was Cinnabar, a daughter of Old Joe by Harmon Baker. Old Joe was out of a daughter of Jim Ned. Harmon Baker was a son of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Peter McCue. Harmon Baker was used by William Anson. Cinnabar was bred on the famous CS Ranches of New Mexico. The dam of Tadpole was Mae West AQHA #56. She was Coke

Tadpole is the son of Red Dog in the pedigree of Casey's Ladylove. Photo Courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum. Roberds bred and sired by Coke T by Brown Dick. Her dam was a Roberds Mare by Peter McCue. Coke T was out of Stockings by Old Fred and her dam was a Roberds Mare by the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Peter McCue. Coke Roberds is another AQHA Hall of Fame member and the last man to stand Peter McCue. He also stood the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Old Fred. The dam of Miss Casey was Nedra, a mare bred by Xenia Casement, Jack Casement’s wife. The sire of Nedra was Red Dog. Her dam was Sanchia, a mare sired by Little Joe Springer, a son of Old Joe from the CS Ranch. Her dam was a Joe Mare by Old Joe. This makes Miss Casey inbred to Red Dog with a 2 X 2 breeding pattern. Casey’s Poco was the sire of a number of ROM, including the AQHA Champion Poco Erna. Our Goldie was a second AQHA Champion sired by Casey‘s Poco and a full sister to Casey’s Ladylove. Horse Breeders Association Hall of Fame show horse with 653 PHBA points. The dam of Casey’s Ladylove and her siblings is Lady Diane. Lady Diane was sired by Mc Rusty, a 1947 son of Joe Tom Mc. Mc Rusty was bred by C. H. McCellan and his dam was a Burnett Mare whose pedigree is unknown. The dam of Lady Diane was Chigger Barnes, who was sired by Joe Tom Mc. This gives Lady Diane a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Joe Tom Mc. Joe Tom Mc was bred on the Tom L. Burnett Estate, at one time a part of the Burnett Ranches. Tom L. Burnett was the son of Samuel “Burk” Burnett founder of the Four Sixes Ranch. Joe Tom Mc was sired by the legendary stallion Joe Hancock by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. Joe Hancock was the founder of his own family of quarter horses. Joe Hancock was out of the JJ Hancock mare sired by a Percheron Stallion, known as the Ralph Wilson horse, and out of the Mundell Mare, a race mare with an unknown pedigree. The dam of Joe Tom Mc was a mare listed in the AQHA Stud Book as a mare by Red Buck P-393. Red

Buck was a son of Buck Thomas a Coke Roberds bred horse. Buck Thomas was sired by Peter McCue and out of Stockings by Old Fred. The AQHA registration application for Joe Tom Mc indicates that the Red Buck mare was later registered as Triangle Lady 40. Her dam is listed as a Burnett mare, pedigree unknown. The dam of Chigger Barnes was Punkin B by Boco Grande IV. Boco Grande IV has an interesting pedigree as it is found on his AQHA

“My father always kept the fillies out of Casey’s Ladylove. He would sell some of the stud colts but he wouldn’t sell the fillies and that became my parent’s broodmare band.”

Lis Hollman

registration applications. He was sired by Burnt, a grandson of a thoroughbred named Boco Grande. The rest of the pedigree is unknown. The dam of Boco Grande IV was an Oliver Lee bred mare whose sire was unknown. The dam of the Oliver Lee mare was another mare listed as an Oliver Lee mare. The sire of this Oliver Lee mare was a horse named Montana, who was sired by a horse listed as the Pat Garrett Stud. A typed note on the AQHA application states that Montana “was the best cutting horse in Montana.” The dam of Punkin B was a Lee Brothers Mare. The AQHA records show that the sire of this mare was a horse named War Chief. Casey’s Ladylove breeding career got its start with a stallion Page 28

named Laughing Boy, who belonged to the late Pat Cowan who was a good friend of the Loiseaus. “Back then Pat Cowan was training racehorses and my parents decided to send some of her offspring to the race track,” Lis Loiseau said. “And that turned out to be a pretty successful endeavor.” Lis noted that when her Dad became ill and in the last year of his life he still did not miss the races. He loved his racehorses so much. “My father always kept the fillies out of Casey’s Ladylove,” Lis continued. “He would sell some of the stud colts but he wouldn’t sell the fillies and that became my parent’s broodmare band.” The broodmare band would go through some moves over the years. They would start at home with breeding to Laughing Boy and Tiny Circus and then to stallions like Leige Lord and other stallions owned by Pat Cowan. But then she moved on. “When Dad died in 1977 our mother suffered a broken heart,” Lis explained. “But she kept on breeding and going to the races running the horses. It was at one of the races when Barry Hutchinson approached

her and asked about leasing the mares. So the mares went to Barry Hutchinson in Isabell, SD, for a time.” The next move game a couple of years later. “Pat Cowan visited with Mom and that is when they were leased by Pat and bred to the Cowan studs like Sun Frost. That is when all the colts were named PC Frenchman to demonstrate the partnership.” A third change came in 1993 when Lis and her husband John moved back to South Dakota and they took over management of the Frenchman broodmares. The Loiseau broodmare band first added four daughters of Casey’s Ladylove that were sired by Laughing Boy. Pat Cowan and his brother-in-law Tex Fulton had bought Laughing Boy from Stanley Johnston and Bill McNeil, who had bought Laughing Boy in Arizona and brought him to South Dakota. Laughing Boy was an AA rated runner. He was sired by Lightning Bar by Three Bars. The dam of Laughing Boy was Bonnie A by Joe Reed II. The dam of Bonnie A was Adios by Red Cloud by Possum (King) a full brother to Little Joe

Frenchman’s Luck is the granddam of SL Frenchmans Hero a finalist in the Speedhorse Gold Cup Barrel Futurity. The last Laughing Boy mare out of Casey’s Ladylove was Frenchmans Lady and she was born in 1972. This mare has no AQHA race or show record. The first foal out of Frenchmans Lady was Frenchmans Blaze, an ROM show horse with seven points. Frenchmans Blaze was sired by Pueblo Jet. The next foal out of Frenchmans Lady was Lord Alamitos by Leige Lord. Lord Alamitos earned his ROM on the track earning an 80-speed index. He was also an NCHA money earner and the SDCHA and BHCHA Amateur Cutting Champion as well as the 1984 WRCA Snaffle Futurity Amateur Champion. Lis credited Lord Alamitos on starting the influence of Casey’s Ladylove in barrel racing. “Certainly Kristie Peterson and Bozo put our bloodline on the map but prior to that, people were using these horses in the barrel futurities and about 20 years ago Bill Myers had taken Lord Alamitos to the track and then in working cow horse. Then he had Gale Beebe run him in the barrel futurities and they did real well. So girls from South Dakota started to use them in barrel racing.” Lord Alamitos won five barrel racing futurities including the Black Hills Classic, Fizz Bomb Classic, Eight State Barrel Futurity, the Nebraska Cowgirls Futurity and the High Plains. He was then bought by Martha Josey and shown by this great barrel racing champion. Lady Lord was a full sister to Lord Alamitos. This mare was owned by John and Lis Hollmann and they sold her to Mary Bonogofsky. who won the Dodge National Finals on her. Cheryl Luman rode her at the 1990 NFR.” The sire of Lord Alamitos and Lady Lord was Leige Lord who was used on the Frenchman mares during the time that Barry Hutchinson had Page 30

"Stingray" and Sherry Cervi won their first World Championship at the 2010 WNFR. They duplicated that feat in 2013 with a number of records and a great performance at the WNFR giving them their second World Championship. Photo courtesy Mel Potter them. Leige Lord was a superior race horse with a 98-speed index. He was stakes placed in the Saila Fall Futurity. He was the sire of 21 racing ROM, two stakes winners and two stakes placed runners on the track. He is the sire of one Superior performer and three ROM in the arena. His sire is Alamitos Bar by

money winners. His foals have earned in excess of $6.5 million in the arena with about $3.6 million coming from barrel racing. Some of the leading money winners sired by Frenchmans Guy include SX Frenchmans Vanila, winner of $230,000; Guys Famous Girl, winner of $110,786; Frenchmans Lil Lady, $95,101 and Ima Super Fly Guy, $75,000. The 2013 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was a showcase for the get of Frenchmans Guy. His son French Wonder earned $179,487 in bulldogging in the WNFR. This performance helped carry owner Matt Reeves to a number two finish in the World standings and Bray Armes to the WNFR Average championship where they placed in round 2,4,6, 7 & 9. Armes finished third in the World standings with his average championship earnings contributing $100,160 to his yearly winnings. Casey Martin who finished fourth in the World standings was third in Round 10 of the WNFR Bulldogging on French Wonder. They won $11,118. The 2013 WNFR Barrel Racing saw Honor Thy Frenchman (Bo) set

an arena record of 13.37 seconds while winning four rounds. They won $82,432. Bo is sired by Frenchmans Feature by Frenchmans Guy. The barrel racing champion Brittany Pozzi was third in round six on her five-year-old Ima Super Fly

A great example of this versatility comes in 2005 at the Snake River Stampede at Nampa, ID, where Dinero was shown in barrel racing by Sherry and in heeling by both Walt Woodard and Corey Petska. index. He was the 1979 AQHA Reserve World Champion Senior Heading Horse. He earned 34 AQHA performance points in tie-down roping, heading, heeling, reining and western pleasure. He was sired by Tiny Watch who was the 1965 AQHA Racing Champion Stallion and the 1966 AQHA Racing Co-Champion Stallion and Aged Stallion. Tiny Watch was sired by Anchor Watch and out of Clabber Tiny by Clabber II. Among Casey’s Charm foals was French Flash Hawk by Sun Frost, the great horse known as “Bozo” in the rodeo arena. His rider Kristie Peterson set the world on fire in the 1990’s with four WPRCA World Championships and five AQHA/ PRCA Horse of the Year titles. On the other end of the produce record on Casey’s Charm is Bozo’s full brother PC Frenchmans Hayday or Dinero as he is called by those who remember his rodeo days. Dinero is one of those rare individuals that was in the rodeo arena as a barrel horse and as a team roping horse at the same time. Dinero was an NFR qualifier in barrel racing in 2005 when he helped Sherry Cervi finish third in the average. Dinero was used in team roping in 2005 and was voted to third place in the AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year for heeling. A great example of this versatility comes in 2005 at the Snake River Stampede at Nampa, ID, where Dinero was shown in barrel racing by Sherry and in heeling by both Walt Woodard and Corey Petska. The three riders combined to win $11,000 in this one rodeo with Corey winning heeling, Walt fifth in heeling and Sherry fifth in barrels. The sire record of Dinero shows the versatility of this line. He is the sire of horses that have won over $3 million in barrel racing, heading, heeling and bulldogging. His foals Continued on page 84

The Sore-Backed Working Horse Jay Merriam, DVM,MS The percentage of the working human population with chronic back pain has recently been found at almost 28 percent. There are many things that can go wrong during one's working life, and back pain is probably the most common single issue. Why then should we be surprised that of the working or sport horses that we see, the incidence of such pain is almost the same. As a matter of fact, it is present as a primary or secondary factor in almost all of the cases of hind limb lameness problems, and certainly is

Three year old Western Pleasure horse with left to right asymmetry of the hip. responsible for more “poor performance” complaints than most riders realize. Imagine going to work, whatever that is, everyday with low grade pain in your back that while not incapacitating, nevertheless affects everything you do, from bending over to get a drink to using any piece of equipment. It’s not enough to make you stay home, or even call a doctor, but it does affect every move you make. And yet, in the majority of patients I see for lameness, back pain has not been diagnosed or treated. It is some how thought that a nice, big, well tooled saddle, with lots of padding top and bottom, should make things comfortable. Recent and

ongoing work in veterinary sports medicine has confirmed that this is not the case. Rider skill, conditioning and working surface as well as saddle fit and body symmetry are key factors in lameness. These things must then be considered as we try to maximize a working horses health and welfare, and enhance his working life. And, as in human medicine, there are many myths, misconceptions and outright mistaken ideas about what to do when the sore back is diagnosed. Looking at some of the more common causes will help us look at our own cases and make some corrections. Asymmetry One of the leading indicators for hind limb lameness and the resulting performance loss is asymmetry, uneven muscling or skeletal imbalance, usually seen from behind and always significant. We humans can relate, in that we all have a “dominant” hand or side. Some horses have a pronounced loss of muscle on one side that is overlooked as training and work

often led to a “chicken or egg discussion” as to which came first. Usually subtle signs preceded it if only we’d been looking. The trick is finding this before punishing or pushing a young horse too hard as the imbalance will inevitably lead to other problems in the hocks, stifles or feet, as well as continued back pain and gait problems. This can lead to expensive and often unnecessary treatments of the involved joints. Recognizing this before it progresses is as simple as standing the horse squarely on a flat floor and observing his structure visually. Then some deep palpations of the back and pelvis will often reveal more issues. The type of work, the degree of difficulty, the general fitness of the horse are the main ingredients in determining the severity and the long term effect of any injury. Adding a saddle that may fit the rider but not

the horse or a rider not in sufficient condition for the work or an animal who is not ready can be a recipe for long term problems. Let’s look at back pain as a primary source of lameness, not something that most people do. We can spend a lot of valuable time and money on many of the high tech new procedures like bone scans,

Page 41

Ultrasounds and thermography to name a few, but nothing beats the eyes and hands of an experienced examiner. Muscle pain must be differentiated from ligamentous pain, from bone pain. Then the fitness, neurologic status and training enter in. Finally, seeing the horse at work is critical. Many horses are presented for exam by an owner who can’t think of any reason that he’s lame! And in many cases he’s had hocks injected, stifles “done” and some sort of shoeing changes. And yet the pain persists. Treatments Treatments for chronic back pain are almost as numerous as there are people out there offering ideas. Stick to the basics: Saddles A custom fit saddle that fits the rider and “most horses” is often not good enough. We all have a favorite, but realize that your horse changes size and shape with the season, diet, workload and age. Acupuncture Often this is the first thing I do, just to relieve the pain and get the horse back to some sort of work. It allows return to comfort and fitness and should be done only by a qualified sports medicine trained vet. Then a follow up exam should get to the root of the problem. This is symptomatic relief

The author getting a "feel" for the horse's problems. only. Shock wave Intended for deep bony pain only, although sometimes it's useful in acute flare ups of chronic pain. NSAIDs (Non steroidal antiinflammatories) These are usually not very helpful. Ditto for steroids. (dexamethasone etc). Physical Therapy Usually done in the form of a specific, work related program, and meant to keep the animal in some level of fitness during rest from work. Cross training programs are ideal, i.e., trail rides for horses who usually work in an arena, and vice versa. Causes of back pain Rider/horse mismatch Horses being overridden or riders over mounted. Diet Many of the sorest backs I see are in horses fed excessive grain, turned out only a few hours a day and filled with supplements rather than ridden. Long trailer rides With competitions so widespread, it’s not unusual for horses to be trailered overnight or longer, stuck in a tie stall, competed with minimal warmup and then brought home or worse,

to the next competition. Uneven work/life schedules Trainers are under extreme pressure to “make” young horses quickly. If they do suddenly find a "star” in their midst, many times the others suffer as they stand by while he goes for long weekends at competitions. Consistency is a vital part of any horse's physiology and mental state. Mess with it and a wreck is sure to follow! Lack of real fitness Horses can stay relatively fit left out free range, but not if locked in a stall 20+ hours a day. Horses need “cross training”, not just endless drilling on one event. A long trail ride never hurt anyone! There are many, many parts to the whole back pain syndrome, and I have outlined only a few. We hear a lot about sacro-iliac pain, dropped hips, sloppy stifles and bad hocks, but we need to look at the whole horse, his work life, fitness and general health before we jump into medical therapies that may or may not be needed. Meanwhile, ask the horse how he's feeling! You may be surprised.

Working Lines

The Legacy of Mr Gun Smoke By Larry Thornton Looking at the bloodlines influencing the performance industry today, the blood of Mr Gun Smoke pops up on a regular basis. This great stallion has proven over the years to be one of those individuals that has had and will continue to have a lasting influence on the performance horse. He is in the same category as the great stallions Royal King and King Fritz; these three stallions keep contributing to the breed years after they have left us for horse heaven. Mention the name Mr Gun Smoke, and the name Dale Wilkinson has to come up as the man behind the horse. Wilkinson was no stranger to good horses. He is in the National Cutting Horse Association’s Members Hall of Fame and the National Reining Horse Association Hall of Fame. He is the only man to have won both the NORAH Open Futurity and the NCHA Open Futurity. He won the first NRHA Futurity in 1966 riding Pocorochie Bo. He won the NCHA Open Futurity in 1972 on Gun Smoke’s Dream. Mr Gun Smoke was foaled in 1961, bred by Harley Price of Bazine, KS. Mr Gun Smoke eventually ended up in Ohio in the ownership of Bill Nicodemus and Tom Ryan. Nicodemus offered Wilkinson one-third interest in Mr Gun Smoke to train the horse for cutting. lot to do with his grit. Some of the Leos were a little on the laid-back side–at least the ones I was familiar with. Mr Gun Smoke was different. He had brothers and sisters that were not at all similar to him. He was just a unique individual,” continued Wilkinson. Kansas Cindy was the dam of several other foals, including Leo's Lightfoot. Leo's Lightfoot was a son of Leo's Question, making him a 3/4 brother to Mr Gun Smoke. Mr Gun Smoke had two full brothers–Price's Smokey Leo, an AQHA World Show finalist in cutting, and Kansas Dillion with two AQHA performance points and NCHA earnings of $5,900. Prices Cindy Leo is another 3/4 sister to Mr Gun Smoke. She is sired by a son of Rondo Leo. Prices Cindy Leo is the dam of Sonitas Cindy, with NCHA earnings of $55,000. Mr Gun Smoke went on to sire 48 ROM performers in the AQHA,

Horses. His NCHA Champions included one NCHA Futurity Champion and one World Champion. The 1972 NCHA Open Futurity winner was Gun smoke’s Dream with Wilkinson in the saddle. Wilkinson remembered his NCHA Futurity Champion: "She was just an absolute pleasure and she was strictly a cow horse. She wasn't as physical as her sire but very very trainable. When I say trainable you just drove cows on her and she learned to cut. “She had quickness, too. But I never allowed her to overextend herself and I think that is what made it possible for her to win the Futurity. I just drove cows off out like they do today. I didn't help her that much. I just let her do her thing," continued Wilkinson. Wilkinson then added, “As I said, she was not hard to train and she wasn't as physical an athlete as he was. I just kept her contained

Gunsmoke's Ripple is a daughter of Mr Gun Smoke. This mare is the dam of Smokin Jose, a son of Jose Uno. Smokin Jose was the 1980 AQHA World Champion Junior Cutting Horse and a winner of the famed Masters Cutting. One of the most successful crosses with Mr Gun Smoke was the blood of King P-234 and several of his performers were out of mares carrying the blood of King P-234. Wilkinson agreed with the assessment that the King blood was one of the better crosses, but felt that Mr Gun Smoke was a good cross on several bloodlines. “Mr Gun Smoke was a hyper sucker, an on edge kind of horse,” Wilkinson said. “The King blood slowed it down a bit.” Wilkinson said that you needed to dilute the

The NRHA earnings by her foals is standing at $553,120.91. She is the number five all time leading dam of Page 56

NRHA money earners. The foals of Katie Gun include Colonels Smoking Gun or Gunner as the industry knows him. He was sired by Colonelfourfreckle. Gunner has earned $173,728 as an NRHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion, a Co-Reserve NRBC Derby Champion, and an USET Reining Champion. The next leading money

This son of Hollywood Dun It was the Co-Reserve Champion of the Cactus Classic 4,5, 6 year old open. Spooks Gotta Gun by Gray Starlight has earned $79,603.44 with wins in events like the Reining By The Bay 4,5,6 Year Old Open Championship. He was an APHA World Champion Junior

Reining Horse. Dun It Gotta Gun by Hollywood Dun It is the next leading money winner out of Katie Gun with earnings of $63,417. He is an NRHA Non-Pro Futurity Reserve Champion. Some of the other money winners out of this mare are Heres Your Shine, by Shining Spark ($43,341); Night Time Nic, by Nic It In The bud ($30,432); No Guns Please, by Chic Please ($24,567); Baddabing Boddaboon, by Boonlight Dancer ($27,449); The Cocked Gun, by Gallo Del Cielo ($20,224), and This Guns for Nic, by Nic It In The Bud ($19,562). It should be noted that in all but a couple of cases these performers were sired by different stallions, showing the power of this mare as a producer. The key to Katie Gun’s continued influence on the Mr Gun Smoke bloodline can be seen in the success of her sons as sires. Leading the list is Colonels Smoking Gun or Gunner. This cropout double registered AQHA/APHA stallion has sired the winners of $5.6 million and this number is still climbing. In 2012 alone he sired the NRHA Open Futurity Level 4 Champion in Americasnextgunmodel, the NRHA Open Futurity Level 4 Reserve

Champion and the NRHA Non-Pro Level 4 Co-Champion. Some of his other winners would include Gunners Special Nite, winner of the individual Gold Metal at the 2010 World Equestrian Games, and Gotyer Gunsup, winner of the 2012 NRBC Non-Pro Championship and the 2013 NRBC Non-Pro Reserve Championship. The 2009 NRHA Open Futurity Champion was Gunnatrashya. This son of Gunner earned $236,457 in the reining arena and was the winner of the All American Quarter Horse Congress Reining Futurity, Triple Crown Three-Year-Old Futurity and the 2010 NRHA Open Derby. Gunnatrashya has a double dose of Mr Gunsmoke. He gets one shot of Mr Gun Smoke through his sire Gunner and another shot through his dam Natrasha. This mare is a daughter of Trashadeous the son of Miss White Trash by Mr Gun Smoke. This gives Gunnatrashya a 5 X 4 breeding pattern to Mr Gun Smoke. The success of Gunner and Natrasha doesn’t end with Gunnatrashya. This mating has also given the industry Snow Gun, winner of $129,857, and Alcatrash a winner of $22,214. The 2013 NRHA Futurity events saw Dunit The Gunner Way by Gunner earn the NRHA Level 4 Non-Pro Futurity as the Co-Reserve Champion. Load Your Gun won the NRHA Futurity Show Class Intermediate Reining and Miss Silver Gun came in second in this class. Both are sired by Gunner while Load Your Gun is out of Jo Ell Smoke by Mr Gun Smoke. This gives Load Your Gun a 5 X 2 breeding pattern to Mr Gun Smoke. The 2013 events at the NRHA Futurity included the NRHA Open World Championship Shootout. This event gives us another view of the influence of Gunner and his Mr Gun Smoke blood. The event participants included Nu Chexomatic, Whizasunny Sailor BB, Colonels Shining Gun, Colonels Smart Spook,

Custom Cash Advance, Smoking Whiz and Tinkers With Guns. The winner was Colonels Smart Spook by Smart Spook and out of Colonels Cattin Gun by Gunner. The third place finisher was Smoking Whiz by Topsail Whiz and out of Glendas Smokin Gun by Gunner. The dam of Glendas Smokin Gun was the mare Miss Glenda Jac who was out of Miss Glenda Smoke by Hollywood Smoke by Mr Gun Smoke. This makes Glendas Smokin Gun linebred to Mr Gun Smoke with another 5 X 4 breeding pattern. Another contender was Colonels Shining Gun, a son of Gunner. The “Shootout” contender Tinkers With Guns is an NRHA Derby Open Champion and former Shoot Out Champion. He is sired by Gunner and out of Tinker Nic.

$480,379, with the leading money winner being Spooks Gotta Whiz with $333,501. Her son Dun It Gotta Gun is the sire of horses that have won $360,000. Another Mr Gun Smoke was noted for his ability to put a lot of white on his colts. I attribute that to his connection to Leo and the Joe Reed blood. In his book Reinmaker, the biography of Dale Wilkinson, Frank Holmes attributes this trait put to Della Moore, the dam of Joe Reed P-3 and Joe Moore (who had the ability to put white on his colts). No matter the source, it is safe to say that this is definitely a sign of the power of the genetics of Mr Gun Smoke that has carried down through the generations. Dale Wilkinson said me that the power and quickness along with the

Snip O Gun provided a great link to the blood of Mr Gun Smoke. She is sired by One Gun by Mr Gun Smoke. Waltenberry Photo Courtesy Hilldale Farms.

Tinker Nic is out of Hunny Gunny by One Gun by Mr Gun Smoke. This gives Tinker With Guns a breeding pattern of 4 X 3 to One Gun and a breeding pattern of 5 X 4 to Mr Gun Smoke. The siring sons of Katie Gun don’t end with Gunner either. She is also the dam of Spooks Gotta Gun, the sire of horses that have earned

cow in Mr Gun Smoke was so powerful it had to be “diluted.” He felt that these strong traits of Mr Gun Smoke would come through in his grand get and great grandget. Looking at the influence of this stallion in the new century, it appaears Dale Wilkinson knew exactly what he was talking about.

Putting the Pedigree to Work

The Tire Drill By Rodney Yost

Growing up in the middle of South Dakota, as the 4th generation of my family's Broadaxe Ranch, I've naturally developed a deep love for the western way of life, horsemanship, rodeo, and the ranching heritage. I welcome the opportunity to write about a variety of equine related topics, horsemanship drills/techniques and training. I utilize an extremely functional drill on a regular basis in my training program. I’m a believer that quality, purposeful groundwork pays enormous dividends in the entire scope of our horsemanship and training process. Years ago, I developed a drill that I labeled “The Tire Drill” to assist me in creating softness and control throughout a horse’s body, while also making it more natural and less stressful for the horse. In my horsemanship clinics and demonstrations, I use obstacles to create focus points for spectators and clinic participants and to establish consistency in learning and training of their horses. Similarly, I also take advantage of the use of natural and man-made obstacles to enable a horse to learn more efficiently and effectively. These obstacles can be an orange cone, a bridge, tree, large rock, bush, or in this case, a tractor tire. I constructed the Tire Drill in response to struggles that we all face when introducing body control and groundwork skills to a young horse, especially an aggressive or “crowding” horse. Over time, as with many drills, it also showed great benefits for the opposite type, an evasive/disconnected horse. It’s possible to utilize the tire in the roundpen with a loose horse, but

for an easy example, let’s assume that we have a haltered colt standing at the end of a 14-ft. lead rope, on the opposite side of a standard sized grapple-loader tractor tire. When I perform my groundwork, I’m looking to create a horse that will travel around me with free-moving rhythm in his feet, on a loose lead, a

and the colt throughout the process. An aggressive horse or a colt that wants to “squeeze”/smother us, will be limited on their ability to take advantage of our position in the center of the roundpen. When they attempt to crowd us or overpower our position, they’ll simply bump their lower legs into the sides of the

soft head/neck to my direction, elevated shoulder, flexed/elevated ribcage, and a slightly disengaged hip that is traveling/tracking slightly outside of his front feet. All these characteristics show me a controlled, committed, relaxed, and willing horse. The tractor tire assists me in all these aspects. With my constructive guidance, the shape of the tire will obligate the colt to naturally maintain this body position. We structure our direction, change of direction, etc., similar to how we typically would when performing groundwork without the tire. We simply allow the tire to become a guidance point to assist us

tire. This is a primary reason that I’ve committed to utilizing a tire. I’ve had colts bump their legs, stick both front feet inside the tire, and jump the tire without injury due to the flexibility of the rubber of the tire. However, the tire is also firm enough with enough weight that the colt isn’t able to push the tire around, and is held accountable for its position. An evasive/disconnected horse that won’t “hook on” or commit to our position in the center of the roundpen, can use the tire as their relief point. When they race around

The Immune System What is the immune system and how does it work? The immune system is, simply put, the vital organs working with the blood and lymphatic system to accomplish the optimal welfare of the body. When the immune system is not working in harmony or if it is given excess work to do right when it is already working as hard as it can, it simply cannot, and will not, be able to handle the job it is designed to do. What has this got to do with anything? Well, everything put into the body is either food or it is not food at the cellular level. If it is recognized as food the cell uses

work well on a strong cow that just needs a little gentle persuasion. Remember, the physics of the inside of the horse are the same as those on outside the horse: water still runs downhill unless under a pressurized system; two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time; gravity is always at work to pull the body down, etc. How can feeding do the immune system any good? Every part of the horse is made up of its own vitamins and minerals. For instance, bones and teeth need calcium to keep them strong but so does the heart need calcium to

it; if it is not recognized as food the cell simply cannot use it, so it then becomes a toxin which needs to be evacuated from the body. The immune system plays a vital role in this evacuation. The liver, kidneys, blood, lymphatic, digestion, skin, etc., are all asked to step up the pace to evacuate these toxins. If one of those organs already has a full schedule, it must miss some of the toxins, which causes congestion, either in that organ or some other part of the body or the blood. In other words it taxes the immune system. To stimulate the immune system is fine if the immune system is strong in the first place. But if it is not, it simply drains it more. I compare it to using a cattle prod on a cow that is down and weak. It will stimulate her but it will not help her stay up if she does get up. What the cow needs is something to make her stronger so she can get up and stay up, not something to stimulate her to do something she is not capable of doing. The same stimulation will

perform its constricting action. Now, the body has its own built in “pecking order”. When calcium is made available the heart will get what it needs first, because the heart is most vital to the survival of the body. The bones will get second pick because it is in the bones where bone marrow and blood cells are produced, which is of greater importance than are the teeth. If there is still some calcium available, the teeth will get it. The body treats all vitamins and minerals in this way. Therefore if we want the liver, or the kidneys, or the heart, or the bones, or the total of all of the above healthy, we need to feed what makes them healthy. When a horse is grazing on natural vegetation, which has not been sprayed for weeds, he will eat a number of different plants and a number of different parts of those plants in the course of a day. This is the optimal feeding condition for the horse. Not only is he getting what he needs, but he is also getting an easily

assimilated form of the vitamins and minerals as they are available in the natural vegetation and the amount of each he wants. This is what we must look at replicating when we are feeding our confined horses. Horses fed on natural vegetation in this manner generally have pretty strong immune systems because they pick the plants they need when they need them. The difference in stimulating the immune system and building the immune system is the difference it generally takes to win the really tough battles fought within the internal body parts. It is absolutely necessary to have the horse's bodily functions helping you. This is why we concentrate on keeping the horse's immune system working for us by building the natural strength, or immune system, through nutritional supplementation. Once again the best defense is a good offense–prevention is key. Mickey Young Owner and Founder of SLH

include MP Daysys N Roses (Daisy) with over $100,000 won in team roping; MP Quick Money (Money) with over $75,000 won in team roping; MP One Wink A Day (Twister) winner of over $75,000 in barrel racing; MP Right Back Atya (Max) winner of $536,000 in bulldogging and MP Patches of Hay (Lori) winner of $125,000 in team roping. The head of the class for the offspring of Dinero is MP Meter My Hay or as the world knows her “Stingray.” Sherry Cervi and Stingray have won two WPRCA World Championships and one title as the AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year. The second World Championship came in 2013 where Sherry earned over $242,000. The Sherry and Stingray team were named the WNFR Top Gun winners and the WNFR Average winners. They won these titles by placing in all ten go-rounds setting a record for time in the average, breaking the record set by Bozo in 1997. Frances and her daughter Barbara Westover own PC Frenchmans Flirt. This mare is a full sister to Frenchmans Guy and the dam of French Streaktovegas, a finalist in the 2012 BFA Derby and a winner of over $71,000. He is a full brother to French Streakofbling, winner of the 2012 Grid Iron 1D Futurity. This mare has won over $17,000 in the barrel arena. Some of the other foals out of Caseys Charm include Boon Dox Charm, a finalist in such events as the Fizz Bomb Futurity; PC Frenchmans Chris, a finalist in the Bold Heart Inc Breeders Open Futurity, and Frenchmansdoxdakota, a finalist in the Double B Finals. The versatility of the Casey’s Ladylove foals is found in French

Flash Frost, a full brother to Bozo. This gelding was second in the 1991 US Team Roping Championships. Casey’s Charm is also the dam of the stallions PC Frenchman, whose foals have earned over $100,000, and PC Frenchmans Mark, sire of foals that have won over $100,000. Frenchmans Topaz is a 1981 daughter of Leige Lord and Casey‘s Ladylove. This mare has her ROM in racing. Her gelding sons Frenchmans Tiger and Frenchmans Clipper were purchased by Jan Fisher and were successful barrel horses for Jan. Frenchman’s Clipper earned over $100,000 and

ROM in the AQHA and qualified for the NFR in 2000 with Marlene McRae in the saddle. Both of these foals were sired by Leige Lord. The last foal registered foal out of Casey’s Ladylove was PC Lady Frances. This daughter of Sun Frost is the dam of Bully For Casey, a finalist in Speedhorse Silver Cup Non-Pro Barrel Futurity. PC Lady Frances is also the granddam of Heza Hot General, a finalist in the BFA World Championship Barrel Futurity. The longevity and the continued success of a family of horses is often determined by how they are bred or used in the pedigree as time goes on. A good way to perpetuate the blood of a mare like Casey’s Ladylove is through line breeding. Here are a couple of examples of line breeding playing a role in the family of

Frenchmans Tiger is a Fizz Bomb Barrel Futurity Reserve Champion and a Fizz Bomb Barrel Derby Reserve Champion. The 1983 foal was Love A Lord. This gelding was the 2001 AQHA Youth Reserve World Champion Barrel Racing Horse. He earned 41 open performance points and 130 youth performance points earning a Superior in youth barrels. He was shown by Rachel Moore. The next foal was Caseys Lord who earned an

of Nick Sartain’s good heading horse Sandman. Nick was third in the WNFR average in 2013 where they placed in round 2, 4, 6, 9 & 10, winning $79,596. Frenchmans Fabulous, a son of Frenchmans Guy and Casey’s Charm has a breeding pattern of 3 X 2 to Casey’s Ladylove. He is a proven show horse in barrel racing, tie-down roping and heelingand carried Kelsey Lutjen to the 2012 National High School Goat Tying Championship. Frenchmans Fabulous is proving to be a top sire that has earned the distinction of being the #1 siring son of Frenchmans Guy. His foals, with Equi-Stat earnings in excess of $250,000, include KN Fabs Mist of Fame, the 2012 Old Fort Days Futurity Champion and the 2013 Old Fort Days Derby Reserve Champion, and Mia Fabulous Fame, the 2013 Arizona HSRA Year-End Barrel Racing Champion. Lis pointed out that they hav ebeen careful about line breeding to Casey’s Ladylove. “We have done a fair amount of breeding back into the family of Casey’s Ladylove but we are careful when we do it. We try not to double breed to stallions. Example

if we have a Sun Frost daughter or granddaughter to a Casey’s Ladylove, we use a stallion without Frenchmans Guy in his pedigree. We try not to double it up both ways. Our goal is to double up on the mare genetics and not double up on the stallion.” The success of Casey’s Ladylove has certainly made an impact on the Loiseau breeding program and she has done that in more ways than you might imagine. She has even had an impact in how the continuing breeding program selects the stallions they use in their breeding programs. “What Mother would tell us about the early years was that there was no shipped semen. So they would pick stallions that were close so they could haul the mares to the stallions,” Lis explained. “As the years went along we developed a lot of faith in the mares but at the same time, we’d think a lot of the stallions and they deserve a lot of credit. But is seems that no matter the stallions, these mares were bred to produce something that can excel in the arena. So we started to put more emphasis on the mare line than

the stallion’s. It is important what the stallion does or has done, but what we really look at is the bottom side of the stallion’s pedigree. We try to breed to stallions with exceptional mothers because we feel like we are breeding that stallion’s mother to our mares. We feel like the maternal genes in many cases are dominant and come through.” “Casey’s Ladylove and her daughters seem to perform in a number of different venues no matter who they were bred to. Laughing Boy was tremendous,. then they came back and crossed really well with Leige Lord, then they did great on Sun Frost and Tiny Circus. Then there daughters have bred a number of ways including running horses and cow horses from Paddy Irish Whiskey to Special Effort and they’re still producing. And they are producing stallion quality colts and broodmare quality fillies.” The Frenchman family of horses seem to keep going and going, a true sign of a great family of horses, a family founded by one of our Mares with More, Casey’s Ladylove.

the tire, to our own body position. In a short time, the disconnected colt will willingly run to us from a distance to find their relief. Thiscommitment carries over to many aspects of future training sessions. This is a broad, generalized description of the Tire Drill which can be seen in more complexity at my horsemanship demonstrations/ clinics and will be shown in my upcoming online video training blogs in 2014. We will also utilize this commitment/respect for the tire once we are in the saddle to perform the riding portion of the Tire Drill.

As trainers, we recognize the slight positive advancements, rewarding them appropriately, and building on them. If presented properly, this same disconnected colt will race to the center of the roundpen and hover around the tire to maintain his relief point. Gradually, we will correlate the relief point and the position of

PATH International and ACTHA to Celebrate St. Patrick's Day Together

At their annual international conference in Orlando FL, The Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH Intl.) announced to its 850 North American Centers plans to embark on their largest fund raising project ever. In partnership with The American Competitive Trail Horse Association (ACTHA), PATH Int'l hopes to raise $1 million for its centers throughout the month of March 2014, with a special focus on the weekend of March 15-16, 2014. March 2014 will be a very special month for those families in need of physical and emotional therapeutic help that uniquely the horse/human connection can give. Plans include hosting approximately 1,000 ACTHA events throughout North America. Each of PATH International's Centers will be invited to share in the fun and the funding. “Getting increased national awareness of our cause and, as importantly, local awareness in the 850 communities we currently serve on a non profit basis is always an important part of fulfilling our mission,”

said Kay Green, PATH Int'l CEO. “Local volunteers are critical to the daily completion of our mission. That mission is changing and enriching lives by promoting excellence in equine-assisted activities and therapies.“ ACTHA will administer the events. “We couldn't be more pleased. It is a great example of what we can do and why we believe ACTHA, with help from our wonderful partners like PATH Int'l, sponsors, members, hosts and thousands of volunteers can literally cure the plight of the unwanted horse,” said Carrie Scrima, ACTHA Founder. PATH Int'l shows us one incredible way these horses can be of service. More than 7,500 horses are engaged in the wonderful jobs provided by PATH Int'l. Another 35,000 horses will be doing "their" jobs with this outstanding effort. It is likely about 50,000 horses will show up for work in ACTHA events, many having come from rescue situations. That's what ACTHA is all about", For more information or to join in the event, email iwantaride@actha.us. Check our events calendar to find a ride near you at www.actha.us/events. GOD'S SPIRITUAL FEED TRUCK The Turn Around! When I was in college at the University of Missouri one of the main topics of research was on the effects that endophyte has on animals. When cows eat endophyte it causes an elevation in their body temperature and a decrease in blood circulation. One of the effects of fescue toxicity is a condition called fescue foot, a gangrene dermatitis that causes the skin above the hoof and tail to dry out, harden and slough off. Also these animals will have a decrease in appetite and can even lose some of the lining of their stomachs that they use to absorb nutrients, essentially starving their bodies of valuable nourishment. It can also cause low conception rates and abortion. I believe that human beings suffer from a type of toxic poisoning very similar to the endophyte fungus which is condemning thoughts. No matter if they are self-educed or we accept them from negative statements hurled at us from others, condemnation will have detrimental effects on our lives. Nobody would ever even dream of placing the blame on the animal for eating endophyte. However, when a person deals with the consequences of the toxic effects of condemnation– usually with some type of negative behavior–it is quite common for the person to be blamed for their actions. In reality, they are acting that way because they have believed the lies that come from condemning thoughts. Condemnation will always be negative and a representative of defeat without hope destroying you from the inside out. Once accepted, these condemning thoughts can essentially train your body to escape to the

negative behavior following the world’s way of temporary relief from pain that leaves you feeling hopeless and without peace. It stands true that if you are condemned by your thoughts then you can be freed by your thoughts. When a horse has his focus in the direction he is turning and is allowed to move in that direction his body will be in balance and there is no resistance whatsoever to the turn. However, if the turn around is forced it will cause the horse to look where he has been. When he focuses on where he has been instead of where he is going, his shoulder and rib cage get ahead of his thoughts; his front feet will start to hit causing pain, making the turn around difficult and something he does not want to do. So then the focus of the direction of travel is the key to a successful turn around. Just as it is to free yourself from condemnation. As you focus on Jesus’ finished work on the cross, you will believe all your sins, punishment, judgment and pain have been crucified with Him. You will now be positioned in Christ to receive the forgiveness and freedom that comes from right believing. As Jesus is so are you. You are now the righteousness of God in Christ. God sees you as he sees his son and he is so in love with you and there is nothing you can do to change that. Believe, receive and live free forever from condemnation. Romans 8:1 there is therefore now no condemnation. Out of the Auger, Dennis Cappel Hope Givers Working Ranch
