Equine Discussions With Cal Middleton
All Show Disciplines Require Same Solid Foundation Competing in equine sposrts can be a fun way to enjoy the company of our horses and our friends. But it is important that we continue to think of it that way–as fun. Showing a horse should be simply that. We are “showing” what a horse can do and we should be proud of our animal, not critical about the details. We need to let the show be his moment, not ours. Racing of some sort is the most popular equine event in the world. Besides racing there are mainly two types of competitions: Rodeo type events sometimes referred to as speed events where primarily a clock is used to determine the placings, and shows that are judged according to individual rules, standards and style set by particular organizations. Each specific discipline has its own unique set of maneuvers. Most disciplines of equine sports were originally patterned after a real world use for horses, such as farming, battle, livestock work on stations and ranches, or checking crops and traveling across the countryside. I find it fascinating to learn about the history of our equine sports and their origins, whether it be show jumping, cutting, polo or harness and sulky racing. The most interesting part for me is that they are all horses and no matter the game, they all start and end their lives with same basic needs. Whether it’s a local western pleasure pony or a Kentucky Derby winner, the fundamentals of how they operate do not change.
Today most of these competitions bear only a vague resemblance to anything pertaining to real life. Loosely connected to some real life tasks, over centuries we have created some fun and exciting horse events. When done safely and correctly, they can be good for both horse and rider. But before there was reining, before dressage, before trail riding, there was the horse. Prideful and scared. Open-minded, yet cautious. He didn't need us then and he still doesn't need our games now. But we as human beings seem to need something from him, and, most amazing, the horse willingly complies. The maneuvers that make up the games and disciplines we do with horses should be layered upon a correct foundation that we help the horse develop from the beginning. It doesn't matter which discipline we pursue the foundation will make or break the high level competitions as the horse develops in training and showing. (This is something that has become very apparent to me over the years as an NRHA judge and competitor.) The merit of competing should be in the work of getting a horse ready. Day in and day out, for months or years, creating a willingness and desire within the horse to perform a task in front of an audience, and
WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • August/September 2016
maybe even enjoy it a little. We must often remind ourselves that the judging is just an opinion that we paid for that particular weekend and to not get overly caught up in the justification and rationale. Remaining competitive in the industry while keeping this favorable perspective isn't easy to do when you make a living showing horses. But it definitely can be done, and not much worth doing is easy. This has been adapted from a chapter in the book Cal Middleton - On Horse's And Life, published by Whirlybird Press, available now at www.calmiddleton.com.

Training The performance Horse Part 4
Turns For the Better By Al Dunning We have covered several aspects of your horse’s advancements to become an honest, willing participant to use on the ranch or become an event/show horse. The more broke your horse becomes, the more quiet, safe, and dependable he will be. To follow up on Part 3 in the June/ July issue of Working Horse Magazine, which covered going forward readily, how to use your leg cues, and my 1-2-3 method of communication, we will work on our turns. This is an important component in your horse’s overall training that will stick with him throughout his entire life. As you progress in this step, you will be able to evaluate his athleticism and flexibility, which will help you decide his direction and training path. Believe it or not, you started training your horse on turns in the halter breaking stages. You pulled him and requested him to follow the pull direction. Now that you are on his back and going forward, you are teaching him to follow his head and move his feet to match the rein pull. Start with a warm up by bending, backing, and doing some circles. Most of my early training is accomplished at the walk and jog. I am in a side pull, a rope hackamore, or a smooth snaffle. To begin this stage, I will bend in small circles. I reach down my rein, take the slack out, and pull toward
my hip on the bend side (right, in this case). If he resists, I will use my leg on the inside (right) to move the ribs out of the way. If he turns easily, I will add my outside (left) leg for impulsion. At times, I will just “tug” then release my rein to ask for him to move his front feet and follow his nose. I will repeat this drill until he follows easily and holds his inside hind leg fairly still (called the pivot foot). Notice that I have used my inside rein predominantly. The only time I use the neck-rein is to stop the shoulder from running off to the outside. My 1-2-3 method is utilized to be sure I am the same on each side and every pull is a positive cue. 1-Reach down the rein, taking the slack out. 2-Pull to your hip (beltline) smoothly. 3-Add your leg on the outside. When it comes to the question of “how much?” use as little pull and leg pressure as possible, but as much as necessary. It is always a goal to get the required response with the least amount of request or reprimand. All training stages must be approached with logical, understandable methods using feel and thoughtfulness. I am trying to maintain forward motion while getting the outside front leg to cross over the inside leg. When I accomplish this correctly,
WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • August/September 2016
the inside hind leg will remain fairly in one place (pivot foot) and the front feet will cross over with consistent steps and rhythm. Many years ago, I had several colts to start. I was alone and decided to break them in a stall. I messed with them on the ground until I could get on while keeping some control of their head. It was hard for them to get going too fast because the stall was only 16 ft by 16 ft. I cheeked them (this is holding the side of the headstall for control) to mount and kept their heads bent after getting aboard. We just traveled in circles until they slowed and relaxed. When I went outside, turning was easier. What I learned is that using barriers like the arena corners, stalls or roping chutes aids in teaching a body bend without resistance. These horses were naturals at stepping over with their front legs when I used my
Page 27
one rein pull. It is understandable why I still use the corners of my arena and roping chute to teach the round turn, following the head, and stepping over. Another part of teaching the proper turn is using the fence in a rollback motion. Walk or trot down the fence, parallel and two feet away. Stop, back a step, reach down the fence side rein, pull smoothly toward your hip, and add your outside leg (1-2-3) to trot off in the opposite direction. Doing his correctly will teach your horse to get on his hocks, duck his head to the fence and move his front feet properly. If you pull abruptly or too hard, your horse will resist and raise his head above the fence while moving his hind end rather than the front. As my horse advances, I move away from the fence doing the same drill. Trot, stop, back in a straight line, complete a half turn, and go out in the opposite direction. Repeat until perfected! Circles are key to good turns. As you progress, you will start to use the outside rein (neck-rein) more. The sequence will then be: 1-Take the slack out and pull toward your hip with the direct rein. 2-Add your neck-rein to move the shoulder. 3-Add the outside leg to add impulsion.
Page 28
I am always concerned with not letting the energy escape out of the back cinch area on the outside. This means the horse is falling backward, not crossing over in the front, or not giving to a soft pull. If you feel this happening, lighten the pull and add more outside leg. Maintain a slight forward motion while teaching the turns. Practice two-tracking and side passing to keep the outside ribs straight and up under your horse. It is a matter of using the right amount of direction (rein) and the correct amount of leg (impulsion).
I pretty much start all my prospects the same. After you go through the next several installments of my “Training the Performance Horse” series, you will begin to see that it works for all horses and all events. One of my main focuses is for you to learn feel, patience, and have a plan to progress. Always remember to not cause any defense mechanisms in your horse by getting too rough. Be logical and think like a horse! Ride well and be happy, Al Dunning has been a professional trainer since 1970 at his Almosta Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ. His career includes 45 World Championships and Reserve World Championships through the National Reining Horse Association, National Cutting Horse Association, National Reined Cow Horse Association, and the American Quarter Horse Association In 1996, Dunning was named the AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year. Awesome Pete Lived Up to His Name By Larry Thornton Supreme Champions Goodbye Sam, Leo Maudie, Joe Fax as well as Lady Fairfax, the dam of Fairbars, a fourth Supreme Champion. Miss Chubby was sired by Chubby and out of the Old Vaughn Mare. Chubby was sired by Midnight by Awesome Pete’s conformation shows “a real Badger by Peter McCue. Oswald keen head and a neck that was beautiful, a was sired by great front shoulder, withers and hip.” (Leroy Johnny Barnes. Hauerland) Johnny Barnes was Photo Courtesy John Moore in turn sired by Charley McCue. When people looked at Awesome Charley McCue was a son of Billy Pete they knew he was something McCue by Jack McCue by Peter special. He wasn’t a show horse or a McCue. The dam of Johnny Barnes halter horse. He was a ranch bred was Mollie by John Wilkins by Peter and raised horse that had all the right McCue. parts. He was bred to be a breeding horse and that was the goal of his The dam of Charley McCue was the breeder Bob Shelhamer of Billings, Old Vaughn Mare. That makes MT. Oswald inbred to the Old Vaughn Mare with a 3 X 2 breeding pattern. The story of Awesome Pete begins The Old Vaughn Mare was sired by with a horse named Oswald, a 1945 the John Ellard Horse and she was brown stallion, bred by Roy Goad Jr out of the Tom Ivey Mare by the of Fairfax, OK. Roy Goad owned the Ivey Roan. mare Miss Chubby and she was the dam of Oswald. But Goad didn’t get Miss Chubby shows the inbreeding to keep Miss Chubby, losing her in a strength of this line. The Supreme Champion Joe Fax was a ¾ brother to Goodbye Sam. He had a breeding pattern of 3 X 2 to Miss Chubby. His sire was Fairfax Joe and his dam was Maudie Williams. This is an indication of the genetic power of the Old Vaughn Mare family through inbreeding to Miss Chubby. Oswald was an ROM racehorse that was a mystery to many. He started his official race career in 1947 and

ended it in 1950. He had one win, two seconds and a third in five official starts. Some reports show that he won an Oklahoma Futurity in 1947. But the first winner of the AQHA recognized Oklahoma Futurity in 1947 was Leota W. But

there may have been another Oklahoma Futurity. Bob Shelhamer learned about Oswald on a trip to Kansas looking for a Bill Cody stud. Oswald was already a legend in the area. He was a noted match racehorse that could be match raced three times during the day and then used in the rodeo at night. Shelhamer found Oswald to be an interesting horse but nobody knew where he was. The AQHA shows that Oswald was owned by Herb Seay for 10 years and then he was owned by Walter Clark until Shelhamer bought him in 1961. The AQHA record shows that Seay didn’t register any foals by

Oswald but that breeders like L. L. Anderson and Cletus Morley did. Oswald sired a number of racing ROM including Morley’s Dartaway, Morley’s John and Oswald Jr. According to Bob Shelhamer, “Walter Clark had the horse and he wasn’t having very good luck breeding him. He was a slow breeder. So I went down to Walter’s and bred a mare to the horse. I got a really nice colt. I had bought a buckskin colt from Walter and I didn’t like the colt. Although I got him pretty well broke, he was a bucking son of a gun. So I said to Page 34

Walter, ‘You want to trade old Oswald for that colt and I’ll give you some to boot?’ We talked a while and we made the trade. I gave him, oh, $1800 or $1500 to boot. I can’t remember. But that was how I got the horse.” Shelhamer continues, “I didn’t know a thing about him, just what I had heard. I heard that there was an Indian in Oklahoma that bred the horse and that some gamblers had raced him. He was supposed to be a hell of a rodeo horse. A rope horse, bulldogging horse and they ran barrels on him. I heard that they did everything on that old horse. “I knew he was supposed to have been a good rope horse and we had an arena here at home. So one night I decided to see how good that old horse was. I roped a calf and it was like stepping down off an old shoebox. His butt was in the ground so deep it was like no step at all. He was an awesome horse. I even bulldogged on him for a couple of years after we got him.” Oswald may have been a great performer but his role as a breeding horse was different. “I had pretty good luck with breeding him. But I couldn’t turn him out and I always turned my studs out. But old Oswald was a timid horse. If a mare laid her ears back at all he wouldn’t cover her, even if she was in heat. So I hand bred him and kept him on the place.” The legacy of Oswald as a sire was just beginning. Duane Shelhamer, Bob’s son, describes the siring ability of Oswald: “Dad has always been the man handling the papers. I was the one that was breaking and riding them. And those Oswald horses were performance horses and that is how I used them. I was team roping, calf roping and bulldogging all the time on them.

“Oswald wasn’t a beautiful horse when we got him. He was never a real good-looking horse with his long back and he was a hound gutted horse. But that son of a gun put a stamp on his colts in that he had a tremendous shoulder and a tremendous hip on him. A long old gaskin muscle and he could sure run and he passed it on to his colts. I’m still roping on his descendants.” Bob Shelhamer decided to pursue an inbreeding program. “When I started to realize what a good horse he was, I started to look for a way to keep that blood around. So I started to inbreed to him and my dad was an old horseman and he thought that inbreeding was the worst thing you could do. But I got a lot of good colts out of Oswald and some of his daughters and it didn’t hurt any of them.” Oswald’s Pete was a 1968 stallion sired by Oswald and out of Barleo

four years old. He was a little lame after that, although I did calve on him one year. He could run a little too. But he got lame and I never used him much after he got hurt except as a breeding horse.” The next horse in the breeding plan was Mr Pete Oswald. This is the horse they called “Junior.” This 1987

stallion was sired by Oswald’s Pete and out of Oh Miss Sadie. Oh Miss Sadie was a daughter of Oswald’s Pete. The dam of Oh Miss Sadie was Judy Oswald, a daughter of Oswald. This gives Mr Pete Oswald a 2 X 3 X 3 breeding pattern to Oswald. Bob Shelhamer recalls Mr Pete Oswald: “He was more like Oswald than any horse I’d ever seen. Damn that horse could run and he had more cow than any horse I ever rode. Boy he was a good horse and could he walk. I bet he could do 12 miles per hour at a walk. I always had three or four good men working for me and we’d run a lot of cows. He was just like a saddle horse when he wasn’t turned out. I rode him a lot in the fall and in the winter and the early spring. We would be comin’ in after riding 40 or 50 miles a day. This horse would have his head down just clippin’ along and those guys would be jiggin’ along in the trot all the time just to keep up with him.”
“I broke him myself,” Shelhamer continues. “He was a big horse. He would weigh 1,400 pounds in the spring after a mild winter. He could run and do anything you wanted a horse to do. I never had him on the track, so I don’t know how he could run, but he could run. We roped a lot on him. “Had a chance to sell Mr Pete Oswald one time and I didn’t let him go. Then he died on me. I think he was about 8 years old when he died. But he could put a cow down a gopher hole. He could virtually fly and I’ve ridden a lot of saddle horses and I’ve had a horse since I was 14 and now I’m 90. He was such a stout and active horse. About as active a horse as you could find.” Nestor’s Gin was the dam of Judy Oswald. She was a Savage bred mare that Shelhamer used in his broodmare band. Her breeder was Ven Savage of Sumatra, MT. Nestor’s Gin was a daughter of Nestor by Billy Clegg. Savage Gin was the dam of Nestor’s Gin. She was sired by Tommy Waggoner by Tony Waggoner. The dam of Savage Gin was Golddust’s Ginger by Golddust Shoemaker. Nestor was bred by N. T. Baca of Gallegos, NM. The next horse in this breeding program was Gin Blaze, out of old Oswald. “She was a good looking son of a gun, but she didn’t have much for brains. I broke her to ride, but she just didn’t have much for brains. She didn’t pass it on and every one of her foals was a good one,” Shelhamer says. Gin Blaze was a very prolific mare. She was the dam of 23 registered foals with her first foal coming in 1972, Pete’s Boots by Oswald’s Pete. Her last foal came in 1996 and that was Awesome Pete. Her prolific ways earned her a certificate from the AQHA that recognized her for
Page 36
producing so many foals. She is one of the all-time leading foal producers based on pure numbers without embryo transfer. She was the dam of two performers. They were Blazing Kid Boots with five AQHA open performance points and Pete’s Bay Cody with 3.5 AQHA performance points. Oswald’s Pete was the sire of both of these performers. The dam of Gin Blaze was Gin Cake. This mare was sired by Johnny Cake by Red Man by Joe Hancock. Joe Hancock was sired by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. The dam of Johnny Cake was Hand Ele, a thoroughbred mare. The dam of Gin Cake was Nestor’s Gin. This makes Judy Oswald and Gin Cake ¾ sisters. The mating of Mr Pete Oswald with Gin Blaze produced five foals including four mares and one stud. The stud colt is Awesome Pete. The mares are Juniors Dandy Blaze, Juniors Blaze, Blazin Gin and Miss Gin May. This mating has a 3 X 4 X 4 X 2 breeding pattern to Oswald. It has a 4 X 3 breeding pattern to Nestor’s Gin. This is the pedigree of Awesome Pete. Lynne Taylor was a well-known Montana horseman who was a long time manager of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Refuge. Taylor was a top

rodeo hand as a saddle bronc rider, bull rider and team roper. He was also a noted rodeo pickup man. Taylor bought a stallion named Roanys Tomcat from Bub Nunn, the owner of High Rolling Roany. High Rolling Roany was sired by Roan Prairie by Cibecue Roan by Red Man. Red Man was sired by Joe Hancock by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. Nunn and High Rolling Roany had developed a top performance horse breeding program giving the area some great rodeo horses.
move of Awesome Pete to Texas came about. Hauerland started with his interest in the Peter McCue horses. “I have always admired the Peter McCue horses. I grew up with them. I grew up around an old man named Owen Lay that had racehorses. I was born in 1946 and in the late ‘50s I was a jockey for Mr. Lay and he raised Painted Joe, the paint horse that outran horses like Clabber. “I learned most of the good ropers wanted the Peter McCue blood. We
As the story goes, Taylor bought three Nunn bred weanling colts. Roanys Tomcat turned out to be the best and the one he used in his breeding program. Roanys Tomcat was out of Jax Red Cat by Apple Jax by Two Eyed Jack. When Taylor retired from the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Refuge he started working for local ranchers and one of them was Bob Shelhamer. This introduced Taylor to the Oswald horses and, as they say, the rest is history. Taylor bought Awesome Pete in 1999 to cross on his Roanys Tomcat mares. The Taylor plan was in place to bring the breeding program of Bub Nunn and the High Rolling Roany blood together with the Bob Shelhamer Oswald bred horses. The breeding program came together with the help of rancher, author and historian John Moore. The Taylor breeding program sadly came to an end when Lynne Taylor would unexpectedly die of an aneurism. When Lynne Taylor passed away, the family decided to sell his horses and this brings Leroy Hauerland of Sealy, TX, into the picture. Hauerland, a long time horseman and a source of much of the information on the Jess Koy stories in the last two issues of Working Horse, recalls how the

were as poor as church mice and we had to ride what we could afford. But the good ones were Peter McCue horses and through men like Mr. Lay and Jess Koy I learned the value of good bloodlines. “My son Brad is a pretty big guy and he was wanting a bigger horse.,” Hauerland continues. “I had a good line of Doc Bar bred horses but he wanted something with a little more size and bone. We had the cow but we didn’t have the size. The 15 to 15.3 hands 1200 to 1300-pound
horse is what he wanted. Our horses were in the 1100-pound range. So we went to looking for something bigger.” Hauerland learned about what he calls the Montana horses. “About 20 years ago I took a horse to Billings, Montana, to the Bill and Jann Parker sale and, to make a long story short, I got to meet Bill and Jann and a fella named Bub Nunn. Bub Nunn had High Rolling Roany by Roan Prairie who goes back to Joe Hancock. I talked to others like Ray Beecher and John Moore and I learned about these Montana horses and their Peter McCue blood. “John Moore was key in getting me the history of these horses, especially the Shelhamer horses,” Hauerland says. “I studied the pedigrees of these horses and they are linebred to Peter McCue as far as you can go. I realized Shelhamer knew what he was doing with Oswald, as they have a significant look to them. That look came out in Awesome Pete, a blood bay with black mane and tail. He was what I would call the old blood bay. He was a really dappled dark black bay with the black feet, black mane and tail. He had a big black foot and feet hard as a rock. “I never got to meet Lynne Taylor but I learned that he was not only a bronc rider but a pickup man and he did a lot of team roping. I found out that Lynne had bought Awesome Pete, or ‘Bob’ as he called him. Lynne had worked for Mr. Shelhamer as a day rider. I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Shelhamer, either. “So Lynne had Roanys Tomcat and Awesome Pete and he had acquired some Poco Pine mares and was crossing them on those two stallions. He ended up with some really nice mares. He started crossing the mares out of Roanys Tom Cat on Awesome Continued on page 72

Rocket Laning Pedigree Mysteries Don’t Obscure Her Great Genes By Larry Thornton With the power of the mare becoming so significant in our modern breeding philosophies, it’s time to take another look at a mare named Rocket Laning. This is a mare that was originally called Rocket, picking up the “Laning” when she was registered. She is one of our “Mares With More” and her contribution comes through her son Royal King.
chromosomes inherited by the daughters were passed on to the next generation because mares carry two X chromosomes and one of them comes from the sire’s mother and the other from the dam’s mother. But many X chromosomes from Rocket Laning did get passed on and that is the part that makes this such an interesting mystery, not knowing which X’s got passed on.
Rocket Laning was a sorrel mare foaled in 1937. She was bred by Felton Smathers of Llano, TX. She was listed as owned by Paul J. Jesse of La Pryor, TX, in my edition of the AQHA Stud Book. Jesse was one of several owners of this mare. Jim Goodhue in his “Royal King” biography in the Legends Volume 3 offers his insight into the kind of
The influence of Royal King is easy to see in some of his sons who were good sires, but it is his daughters who have made the biggest impact. The Royal King daughters have a direct link to the mare Rocket Laning. When Royal King was conceived, he inherited his X chromosome from his mother. He got his Y (the chromosome that made him male), from his sire King P-234. So when he sired a daughter, he passed his dam’s X chromosome on to his daughters. mare that Rocket Laning was: “Smathers also owned a very good mare he called Rocket (later registered as Rocket Laning). She obviously was a mare of top quality although her pedigree did not show her to be close up to horses who were well known and popular in the early days of the AQHA.” The AQHA internet records show that Rocket Laning was sired by Dolph and his sire is unknown. The dam of Rocket Laning is Cricket by Coldy and then internet records stop for Rocket Laning
mare. Some pedigree researchers list the sire of Coldy as Yellow Jacket. The AQHA lists the sire of Coldy as unknown.

Dolph is one of the consistencies in Rocket Laning’s pedigree. He is listed in most all of the pedigrees as sired by a horse named Gold Digger. This Gold Digger was bred on the W. T. Waggoner Ranch of Vernon, TX. Gold Digger is listed in my AQHA Stud Book as owned by John Weeks Earnshaw of Ballinger, TX. Gold Digger is listed as sired by Folsom, a stallion used on the Waggoner Ranch for several years. Bob Denhardt’s book Foundation Sires Of The American Quarter Horse says Folsom was bought as a 12-year-old stallion for duty on the Waggoner Ranch. He was a palomino and his pedigree is unknown. The Waggoner Ranch had a lot of palominos and duns in its history. Folsom came from Folsom, NM, thus the name. He later became the property of Ramon Wood of Wichita Falls, TX, and then Les Stringer of San Angelo, TX. Wood described Folsom as a 14.2 hand 1100-pound horse. The dam of Dolph is listed as Queen. Queen in turn is listed as a daughter of Yellow Jacket, the famous Waggoner stallion. The dam of Rocket Laning is the mare Cricket, reportedly sired by Coldy. The fact that Cricket is sired by Coldy is another one of those consistencies in the pedigree of this

Garford Wilkinson’s biography of Royal King that appeared in the December issue of “The Quarter Horse Journal” in 1965 titled Royal King, says Rocket Laning carried the blood of Dolph, Gregg Horse, Cricket, Mamie, Coldy and Rose. But today the Gregg Horse, Mamie or Rose do not show up in the pedigree of this great mare. The Gregg Horse brings Rocky Red, the full brother to Royal King, into the discussion of Rocket Laning’s pedigree. This gelding is listed in the AQHA Stud Book as out of Rocket (Rocket Laning) by Dolph by Cremo. Pedigree researcher and author Victoria Anne Short has a very interesting and useful booklet called “Stud Play On Names.” This is a compilation of names of horses that were known by more than one name. On page 11 she lists a horse named Cremo by Yellow Jacket. The alias for Cremo is the Gregg Horse. This brings Cremo, alias the Gregg Horse, into the pedigree of Rocket Laning. Thus we have come onto one of those interesting moments of conflicting information. Which pedigree for Rocket Laning is right and which is wrong? Sue Albin Magers, daughter of Earl and Charlie Mae Albin, may provide some insight into the right pedigree for Rocket Laning. She recalls her father’s reference to the pedigree. “Not much is known about Royal King’s dam, but Rocky Red was his full brother. Of course he was a gelding. But Daddy always thought he was a better cutting horse. He sold Rocky Red, because he and Royal just loved each other and that’s why Daddy sold Rocky. They had buddied up.

book or magazine and he would research the pedigree. I made up hundreds of those pedigree forms. He would look up all these bloodlines. Then we’d go down and he would show us which ones he liked.” The memory and strength of Earl Albin as a pedigree researcher was verified through the Goodhue Legends Volume 3 biography of “Royal King.” Goodhue says that Albin made many trips for Helen Michaelis, an early AQHA secretary, to check bloodlines for the Association. He was called on to verify the pedigrees of good horses in his area.

“I think there must have been something there with the mother. Although we don’t know a lot about her, and I don’t remember Daddy saying much about her. Of course he did a lot of research and he researched all those old horses.” Magers refers to the National Quarter Horse Breeder’s Association, for which her father wrote about Weatherford Joe Bailey in their first Stud Book. “He did research and went around talking to all these people and when you read it, it sounded like him talking. So I feel he knew about her bloodlines because he researched these pedigrees and he had a great memory, a memory like an elephant.
Many pedigree enthusiasts believe Helen Michaelis was the leading researcher in the early days of the AQHA. Michaelis counted among her fellow researchers and co-workers the leading breeder R. L. Underwood and Jim Minnick, the first AQHA inspector. This puts Albin in a very elite group of workers that founded the pedigree history of the American Quarter Horse.
He never forgot a bloodline.”
To verify the correct bloodline for Rocket Laning required a call back to Sue Magers. Sue was familiar with the name Cremo and then she pulled out the Sale Catalog for the first Royal King sale in 1948. Royal King is a reference sire for this sale. Sue reported that his pedigree in the sale catalog indicates the following: “The mare Rocket is listed as the dam of Royal King. Her sire is Dolph by Cremo and Dolph was out of Mamie. And on the bottom, Rocket was out of Cricket by Coldy and Cricket was out of Rose.”
“When Daddy got sick, he had diabetes and then he had to have a leg amputated. He had all the Quarter Horse Stud Books. He entertained himself by looking up pedigrees. He would see a horse in a
Magers says Royal King was registered in the National Quarter Horse Breeders Association, receiving the number 2949. The NQHBA Stud Book lists the following:

Royal King, s.h. Foaled April 1943. Owner, Earl Albin, Comanche, Texas Breeder, Felton Smathers, Llano, Texas Sire: King by Zantanon by Little Joe Dam: Rocket by Dolph by Cremo (Gregg Horse). This verifies the pedigree of Rocket Laning as it was known by Earl
The mating of King P-234 with Rocket Laning is another example used by Jim Goodhue, in his Royal King biography, as an indication of the quality of this mare. Albin. Magers made an interesting point discussing the difference in the pedigrees. She believes that when her father saw that Rocket had been registered as Rocket Laning, he didn’t verify the pedigree of Dolph. He assumed that Dolph was in the Stud Book just as he had researched it, just like it appeared in the NQHBA Stud Book. “The Errata to the AQHA Stud Books, to show that the dam of Royal King and Rocky Red is registered as Rocket Laning 39,024, showed up for the first time in the stud book dated 1952. Rocket Laning’s registration is in the 1953 Stud Book. So I’m assuming that her registration must have been sent in sometime in 1952. The Sale Catalog for Dad’s 1951 sale still showed Rocket.” Another interesting point comes form the AQHA Stud Book and the
registration of Gold Digger. This Gold Digger was registered as number 605 in the AQHA Stud Book. He was sired by Folsom, a stallion born in 1924. The Denhardt information says that Folsom went to the Waggoner Ranch as a 12-yearold stallion. This would put Folsom at the Waggoner ranch in 1936. Gold Digger (605) was listed as foaled in 1937. He came from the first crop of Folsom on the Waggoner Ranch. Rocket Laning is listed as foaled in 1937. This makes it tough for Dolph to be sired by Gold Digger and still be the sire of Rocket Laning. An added note: If Coldy was sired by Yellow Jacket and Cremo was sired by Yellow Jacket, then Royal King is 4 x 4 x 4 linebred to Yellow Jacket. The third cross to Yellow Jacket in Royal King comes through his sire King P-234. King P-234 is out of Jabalina by Strait Horse by Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was sired by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo and his dam was Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. This makes Yellow Jacket 2 X 2 inbred to Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was sired by Whalebone by Old Billy and out of Mittie Stephens by Shiloh Jr. The produce record of Rocket Laning shows some of this mare’s history. Her first registered foal was Royal King. He was born in 1943. Royal King was bred by Rocket Laning’s breeder Felton Smathers. The mating of King P-234 with Rocket Laning is another example used by Jim Goodhue, in his Royal King biography, as an indication of the quality of this mare. The second foal registered out of Rocket Laning is a mare called Martin’s King 2. This 1945 mare was sired by none other than Royal King. This probably means that Royal King was left with his dam and as a yearling he conceived his first foal while in the pasture with his mother.
Page 52
The third foal out of Rocket Laning was Rocky Red by King P-234. This is the full brother to Royal King that was foaled in 1947. This gelding was bred by Smathers and owned when placed in my edition of the AQHA Stud Book by Earl Albin. (Albin later sold this gelding.) Rocky Red was a noted cutting horse just like his older full brother. He was an NCHA Top Ten qualifier in 1953 with a seventh place finish. Rocky Red earned $16,846.78 in the NCHA with the Certificate of Ability and the NCHA Bronze Award. He was an AQHA Superior Cutting Horse earning 103 points with six points in halter. He was also a race starter with one official start. He went unplaced. The fourth foal out of Rocket Laning was Royal Dream by Cowboy’s Dream. This stallion was an NCHA money earner. He was shown in the AQHA, but earned no points. The AQHA Stud Book notes the breeder of this horse is Suel H. Laning of LaPryor, TX. This is apparently where the Laning was added to Rocket when she was registered with the AQHA. Royal Dream was foaled in 1952. The fifth registered foal out of Rocket Laning was Royal Taylor. This stallion was unshown in the AQHA and NCHA with no earnings or points to report. He was sired by a full brother to Poco Bueno named Old Taylor. Royal Taylor was bred

The last foal out of Rocket Laning that was registered was Rocket Pistol. This bay mare was sired by King’s Pistol by King P-234. She was unshown in the AQHA and NCHA. This mare was bred by John V. Glades of Yates Center, KS, and was foaled in 1959. Royal King became a very successful show horse and sire. He earned NCHA Top Ten rankings for four years. He was third in the top ten in 1952. He stood second with the NCHA Reserve World Championship in 1953 to go along with his NCHA World Champion Stallion title. He was sixth and ninth, respectively in the 1954 and 1955 top ten. He earned $23,976.19 in his cutting career. He earned the NCHA Certificate of Ability, NCHA Bronze and NCHA Silver Awards. He was Superior in cutting in the AQHA with 106 performance points.

Royal King not only had a good show record, but his sire record got a good start. He sired seven AQHA and NCHA performers with all of them either going on to earn an ROM or money in the arena. This first crop included the great stallion Major King and cutting mare Miss Nancy Bailey who earned the NCHA Hall of Fame Award. Royal King sired 590 AQHA registered foals. He was an AQHA leading sire of ROM. His AQHA performers earned 88 ROM with 10 AQHA Championships and 15 Superior Awards. Lynx Bar Legacy...daughters and granddaughters have produced horses that have won in excess of $800,000. Bill’s Jazabell was sired by Cutter Bill and out of Royal Jazabell by Royal King. Bill’s Jazabell produced Jazabell Quixote, the 1982 NCHA Non-Pro Futurity Champion. Jazabell Quixote became a leading producer of money earners with her foals earning $1,239,669. Her produce includes July Jazz, an NCHA Open Futurity Champion, and Royal Serena Belle, an NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Royal Serena Belle is the dam of One Time Royalty, an NCHA Open Futurity Champion. The daughters of Jazabell Quixote include Jazzy Starlena winner of $25,731. She is the dam of horses that have won in excess of $500,000, including MH Bodees Starlena, winner of over $337,000. Another daughter of Jazabell Quixote is Classic Jazabell. This mare earned a modest $9,088 in the
NCHA. Her seven performers to date have earned nearly $500,000 with three of them earning over $100,000 each. They include Atta Cat, an Idaho Classic/Challenge Open Champion. Atta Cat is the sire of 30 NCHA money earners with earnings of $284,244.22, including Karats N Oaks Cat, winner of the Idaho CHA Open Futurity. The sons of Jazabell Quixote have performed fairly well as sires. These sons include the million dollar sires Hickoryote, Jazzy Joe Lena and Dual Jazz. Lynx Bar Legacy was bred and owned most of her life by Randy and Sue Magers. She was sired by Doc’s Lynx and out of Royal Bar Legacy by Royal King. Lynx Bar Legacy is the dam of nine AQHA point and/or money earners that have earned 522 AQHA points and $140,360.44. They include Mariahs Legacy, winner of $19,926 and winner of the 1991 Abilene Western Open Futurity; Sonitalena Legacy with $22,910 in earnings and winner of the Kanas Open Classic, and Genuine Legacy, with $28,056, and the Reserve Champion of the Missouri Spring Open Maturity. Several daughters of Lynx Bar Legacy were unshown but they have gone on to be producers in their own right. Her daughters and granddaughters have produced horses that have won in excess of $800,000. Her daughter Tabasco Lass is the dam of Lynx Of Style winner of $349,094. Tabasco Lass is the dam of Legacy of Style, another unshown mare, and she is the dam of Lizzys Got Style, winner of $105,532. Dual Legacy is a daughter of Lynx Bar Legacy and she is the dam of Jerries Dual Legacy, winner of $200,937. Lynx Bar Legacy is a daughter of Doc’s Lynx, the 1973 NCHA Open Derby Champion. Royal Blue Boon ... is the number one all-time leading dam of cutting horse money winners with earnings of over $2.6 million. Royal King blood has been a great cross on Doc’s Lynx with Lynx Melody serving as another example. Lynx Melody is out of Trona by Leon Bars. The dam of Trona is Miss Royal Fleet, a daughter of Royal King. Lynx Melody is the dam of the NCHA Futurity Champion Shania Cee and the granddam of the multiple NCHA Aged Event Champion Shakin Flo. Crackin, a daughter of Lynx Melody, is the dam of Nabisco Roan, a two-time AQHA Reserve World Champion Working Cow Horse and the 2016 NRCHA Celebration of Champions Open Bridle World Champion. Cattin, a son of Lynx Melody, is the winner of $137,811 and a milliondollar sire. Sophisticated Catt, a son of Shania Cee, is a three time AQHA World Champion Cutting Horse and the 2011 NCHA Leading Freshman Sire. It should be noted that the pedigree of Lynx Melody and Lynx Bar Legacy have some interesting similarities. Lynx Melody is sired by Doc’s Lynx and out of a Royal King/ Three Bars cross. A Cinch to Fix Founder! The Hoof Cinch is a tightening band designed to relieve the pain of laminitis by applying pressure to the front of the hoof wall where the laminae have failed. This pressure forces the hoof wall to grow back towards the coffin bone helping to once again realign the two. Typically, the Hoof Cinch only takes 12-16 weeks to fix most cases of founder. There is no special trimming or shoeing required, although we do suggest keeping the heels elevated to reduce the pull on the deep flexor as well as help with the blood flow while the hoof is healing. Within hours, you should see a more comfortable horse.

Pasture bred, foaled out on pasture and raised in the mountains From R Lazy 6 Quarter Horses, Lewistown, MT Our stud is Peps A Dynamo, an own son of Paddys Irish Whiskey, out of a daughter of Doc O Dynamite. He has an awesome temperament, is athletic and eager to please and passes these traits on to his babies. He has NRCHA earnings with very limited showing, and the 2 get we have shown have approximately $15,000 earnings. Equally as important to us are the reports we continue to get back from buyers who are using our horses in ranch work and are very pleased with them.

Pete and it seems he found a magic cross. “I found out that Awesome Pete was on John Moore’s place with a group of mares and the family wanted to sell him at Billings and so back to Billings we went. They didn’t put Roanys Tomcat in the sale that daythey had decided to keep him.” “The first time I laid eyes on Awesome Pete it was a picture and I knew that he was the kind of horse I wanted,” Hauerland recalls. “But when they brought him in and we looked at him this was not a picturethis was reality. He had everything I wanted. He had a real keen head and a neck that was beautiful, a great front shoulder, withers and hip. You

million. Her foals read like a Who’s Who of cutting horses. They include Red White and Boon, $578,088; Bet Yer Blue Boons, $346,551; Autumn Boon, $258,185, and Peptoboonsmal, $165,308.44. The Royal King blood in Royal Blue Boon comes from her dam Royal Tincie. Royal Tincie is sired by Royal King and out of Texas Dottie. Texas Dottie is sired by Royal Texas by Royal King. This gives Royal Tincie a 1 X 3 breeding pattern to Royal King. The power of the Royal Blue Boon branch of the Royal King influence continues on through foals like Bet Yer Blue Boons, Autumn Boon and Peptoboonsmal. Bet Yer Blue Boons is the dam of winners of over $800,000 including Bet Hesa Cat, $272,000, and Bets CD, $129,230.
could see that right at the top of his hip it joined in his back where it should be. He had a short back and long underneath and a huge stifle. You couldn’t fault this horse anywhere. And he was solid like a brick. I always thought Orren Mixer would have a field day painting this horse. He was just a magnificent animal.” Remembering the sale, Hauerland says, “I think everybody and their dog was trying to acquire these horses. There must have been 700 to 800 people at this sale and Awesome Pete wasn’t there at the beginning. I guess before the sale we looked at him five or six times and I was amazed at how this horse looked and Brad said, ‘Dad I don’t think you’re going to be able to buy this horse for the money you think you can get him.’ I told him I didn’t come 2,500 miles not to buy this horse as he was Autumn Boon is the dam of foals that have earned $1,463,250, including Im Countin Checks, $514,757, and Once In A Blue Boon, $268,410. Peptoboonsmal won the 1995 NCHA Open Futurity and then became an all-time leading sire with his foals earning in excess of $23 million. His foals include Little Pepto Gal, $526,229; Copaspepto, $472,079, and One Time Pepto, $331,097. The foals by Peptoboonsmal and out of Lynx Bar Legacy offer an interesting way to see the blood of Royal King in the tail female line. Both of these horses go in the tail female line to Royal King. The foals by Peptoboonsmal and out of Lynx Bar Legacy include Pepto Bar Legacy, an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with $25,703 and 29 AQHA cutting points and an AQHA Select Reserve World Championship. The next colt is Royal Boonsmal, an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with earnings of $24,134 and 39 AQHA cutting points. Royal

what I wanted and what we needed. “We ended up getting him and we had him here for eight years and we have quite a few mares out of him and I lost him April 20th this year in the floods down here (Texas). He was a phenomenal horse.” The story doesn’t end here with the loss of Awesome Pete as the Hauerlands have a number of sons and daughters of this great stallion to carry on. They have also brought in the Nunn factor with the blood of Roanys Tomcat and another grandson of High Rolling Roany named Gumbo Gin Cake. Gumbo Gin Cake is sired by Gumbo Roany by High Rolling Roany and out of Juniors Blaze, a full sister to Awesome Pete. So the saga of Lynne Taylor, Bub Nunn and Bob Shelhamer will continue through the Hauerland breeding program. Boonsmal is the sire of only four AQHA performers with his leading winner being A Genuine Boonsmal, with $52,206.03 and 24.5 AQHA points. The next foal from this cross is Blue Boon Rising, winner of $25,961.39 with 11 AQHA points in open and amateur divisions. Roan Texas is the last foal from this cross and he is an AQHA Performance Champion with 393 AQHA points in roping, heeling and heading, with Superiors in these three events. This gives the foals by Peptoboonsmal and Lynx Bar Legacy a 4 X 6 X 3 linebreeding pattern to Royal King all coming through the tail female line of the sire and dam. The power of Royal King in the pedigree has become a significant plus on the mare’s side of the pedigree. Knowing Rocket Laning better, we can see the power this mare exerted on the ability of her son to produce good daughters to influence those female lines.

WHAT’S YOUR BIGGEST ASSET— AND HOW DO YOU CONVERT IT TO CASH?
Chances are that many of your most important assets will sell at auction. Cattle, horses, machinery & equipment, antiques & collectibles, classic cars, real estate -- auction is the triedand-true method of selling just about anything of value. If you have a ranch or home to sell, a traditional listing cycle may be the best way to market it. But auction is handsdown the best way to sell many other assets.
United Country is the world’s largest real estate auction company—and we do personal property auctions! With 600 offices nationwide, as well as Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico, Australia, and China, we sold $4 billion of real estate at auction in 2015. There are 260 auctioneers in the United Country system, with auctioneers specializing in real estate, personal property, estates, registered cattle, horses, heavy equipment, classic cars, art and antiques—even drill rigs, mineral rights, and industrial equipment. No matter what it is, we can find the right expert to sell your assets. Great marketing makes for great auctions! You can have the most amazing and unusual items to sell, but if no one knows about your auction, you’ll be sorely disappointed with the results. We use a national marketing platform that penetrates the marketplace. Our Enhanced Marketing Services team does world-class marketing with outstanding results. Whether it’s online bidding, custom flyers and brochures, drone video, TV commercials, press releases, top-ranked websites, email blasts to targeted buyer lists, or a strong social media presence, we get the word out. Calling the bid is the easy part! No doubt about it, a good auctioneer calls bids with a melodious chant, an understanding of the auction items, and the mood of the crowd. It’s essential to have a good understanding of human nature. It takes a firm hand, a sense of humor, and the ability to instantly solve problems. But the bid calling is only a few hours of the auction day, representing weeks and even months of preparation. Major horsepower for major auction projects—Mike Jones, president of United Country Auction Services, is a past president of the National Auctioneer’s Association, former national and world champion auctioneer, and has transacted billions of dollars in over 2,000 auctions. Mark Woodling, Vice President of United Country’s Strategic Client Services division, sold over a billion dollars of distressed real estate assets at auction. We work hand in glove with Mike Jones and Mark Woodling to bring our auctions to market. When you hire us, you’re hiring a national team to make sure you get the highest price and the smoothest process for your valuable assets. Do you need an auction? Call us for a consultation.
