Equine Discussions With Cal Middleton

Working on Groundwork Correct groundwork never really starts or ends. There is no specific time for it, because it's happening all the time. We’re doing groundwork when we catch the horse, when we lead him in from the pasture or from the stall. It happens before we ever ride him, but it doesn't end there. Groundwork helps establish and reinforce balance and understanding of pressure. Groundwork is working on getting your horse to yield his feet to pressure while staying balanced and then being relaxed about it. Once you can do this on the ground, it doesn't mean that you will be able to execute it perfectly while under saddle; but if you cannot do this on the ground it is certain that you will struggle with it under saddle. Horses need to learn to carry us on their backs and stay balanced while doing it. But if they can't even move balanced without us on their back, then we are in trouble. There are so many horses out there that are in such need of a little groundwork. But people think that since they are riding them already, the groundwork portion of their life is over. This type of thinking is detrimental to the horse. And worse yet, so much of the groundwork I see is only making the horse worse, reinforcing bad body position. Correct groundwork should consist of all four feet yielding to pressure. You take slack out of the rope and the horse engages his rear end without locking up his front feet and vice versa. Give him time to figure out how to shift his weight and place his feet. No matter if he has been ridden for years or never been saddled, groundwork will always benefit the horse. Just be sure that the groundwork you are doing, is doing just that - benefiting the horse. When thinking

of groundwork, ask yourself, how is this benefiting the horse, long term? Groundwork is sometimes done only when a horse is fresh and spunky, and full of energy. People think they need to get the "fresh" out of them before riding. Actually, sometimes the groundwork that they do repeatedly is the reason the horse comes out fresh and spunky every day. If the only groundwork you do is taking the energy out of the horse, then you're doing the wrong type of groundwork. When you work a horse on the ground it should be the same as when you're in the saddle: pressure should equal yield. When you add pressure, the horse yields his body to the direction of the pressure. Pressure should increase energy, or maybe redirect energy, but it should never take it away or stop the energy. A round pen can be a useful tool but it is never necessary. A whip is never needed. A flag is always a good idea, if used correctly. A flag should be used to help the horse learn to give to pressure. Never, ever, ever "desensitize" a horse to a flag or anything else, to the point where the horse stands still and ignores it. A horse is sensitive and always will be. We must learn to work with his sensitivity, not against it. Trying to make a horse not sensitive only locks a horse up and encourages tightness and anxiety over the long term. Instead, use the flag to get the horse to move with respect because of the flag. Give the flag a purpose; this adds confidence to the horse. Remember that when you're working on the ground a horse should follow the pressure. Don't spend time in the beginning teaching him tricks, like going where you point or following you around like a puppy without a

leash. There is no practical purpose for these movements. Get the real stuff done first, the practical stuff that will help him. Then later you can teach him a few tricks if you want to. But realize the difference between tricks and practicality, the stuff he actually needs to understand. This is similar to teaching a dog to roll over versus teaching the dog to respect the leash. Too many tricks and the horse starts guessing too much, then becomes worried and anxious and always thinking he needs to be doing something. Pretty soon every time you move your arms or look at him or step somewhere you have him scurrying all over trying to figure out what it is you want him to do. Instead, let him wait and give to the pressure when he feels it. When working a horse on the ground, pretend he is blind. Don't let him look for it, let him feel it. The same process applies when you ride–feel for what you want, don't look for it. Not all groundwork is the same. Be sure yours is making your horse better each day, and not just wearing him down. Until next time, ride smarter, not harder. Cal Middleton is a professional horse trainer and non-pro coach who competes at shows on the state and national level. Training the Working Horse Part 1 - Take it Slow By Al Dunning Horses have been my life for over 50 years. I have had to be diversified to survive as trends have changed. This taught me a valuable lesson: Every horse needs to be started and trained with strong basics so that their natural talent could be magnified. Using this method, they could dictate their future direction by their talent level. I have always liked a horse with sensitivity and feel. In my program the yearlings are only halter broke, taught to tie, and gentled to allow feet trimming and vet care. When we finally break them, we teach them to lunge in the breaking pen (60 foot round). They are sacked out with a blanket, using a method not intended to scare but to quiet them. Next we introduce them to hobbles. The front legs are hobbled first, while I control them with the lunge rope. Once they stand and accept the restraint, I leave them to sort it out for themselves. I also like to train them to accept side-line hobbles (attaching to the front and hind leg on the same side). A horse can run-off with the fronts hobbled although with side-lines they are more confined. It is important to take your time each day and not “overload their boat”! Knowing when to quit is a key to each day’s progress. Hall of Fame trainer, Don Dodge says, “Train them 1 percent a day for 100 days and you’ll get 100 percent; much more and you will not do them justice!” Ground driving seems to some trainers to be a waste of time. I consider it essential! Horses become accustomed to the ropes around

them, they learn to steer, and to stop while they begin to understand mouth pressure.

step. It is important not to over train before relaxation and willing forward motion is instilled.

Take your time saddling and riding them. Be logical! These horses will last a long time and be good to ride if you take your time and do it right. Rushing through the stages is a poor decision. Be patient on each step so they assimilate each process. This will save you time later. Sometimes the round pen work only takes a few days, although some horses need longer. When they are quiet and steering, head out of the round pen.

As I continue these articles about positive, solid training for the working horse, I will try to relate to you the methods that have worked well for me. When I started, my mentors learned only by the “seat of their pants” or trial and error. I had a strong desire to become accomplished at something I loved. My early years were spent around many great horsemen of that era. Through many wet saddle blankets, bumps and bruises, and broken parts, I have narrowed down my methods to only the ones that truly develop a good horse.

Riding outside, away from the barn, arenas, and other horses can really help your horse’s focus. Introduction to trees, bushes, ditches, hills, and more can give a horse a reason for using their feet and choosing their steps. Bending around bushes, making circles will create the foundation for much of their future training. It is less boring for them to use natural obstacles to assist you in the training process. Simply riding a young horse at this point is a positive

Taking your time is a key factor. Use logical training techniques that actually work and don’t demand too much at one time. Taking good care of their health. Thinking like a horse thinks. And knowing that they rely on us for all their well-being and knowledge. Until next time…ride well.

Al Dunning has been a professional trainer since 1970 at his Almosta Ranch in Scottsdale, AZ. His expertise in all facets of western events has elevated him to great success in the AQHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA. He trains, conducts clinics, and consults for ranch development and equestrian planning. www.aldunning.com

Gunners Lil Smarty’s story began with a successful show career that extended through the 2009 reining futurity. His left front fetlock continued to develop calcification and he became very lame. As he was not able to be ridden he became a pasture ornament. In 2011 Kevin McCall saw Gunner in the pasture. In 2012 he purchased Gunner and started him on Equine Leg Magic. To his amazement he noticed after two months that he was moving much better. At about 8 months he was sound and moving so well that he was put back into training. In January 2013 Gunner was taken to a NRHA sanctioned show where his performance was very competitive. Gunner continues being shown and now has lifetime earnings of $15,464.34. Mares with More

Frenchmans Quarter Horses It's All About Family By Larry Thornton When James and Frances Loiseau brought horses into their family of eight children, they pursued showing horses as a family activity. This modest beginning started the Loiseau family on the road to success in the horse industry as breeders of a family of horses known as the Frenchman line of horses. The success of the Frenchman quarter horses is the common thread in the Loiseau family today as all eight of the Loiseau children, their children and grandchildren have ties to the Frenchman bred horses. These activities cover the gamut from ranch horses, to show horses, to rodeo horses and the breeding of horses. The success of the Loiseau family with the Frenchman mares is a fitting legacy Frances Loiseau left behind for her family.

ponies and a Welsh horse for the little kids and we would head off to the horse show,” Hollman recalls. “I remember we were always late because we had to get the cows milked. They would unhook the horse trailer and jump the ponies out of the stock rack, saddle them up, throw the two youngest kids on the ponies and send them into the pony classes.” The dilemma with a family of eight kids was having enough good show horses for everybody to show. So the best way to get enough good horses was to start a production line or factory and that is how Casey’s

Ladylove came to the Loiseau family. Hollman remembers well how this mare became the production line for the family. “Mom and Dad bought Casey’s Ladylove at a horse sale in Minnesota. She was a buckskin and a two-year-old at the time. When they saw the mare, they thought she was just beautiful. She had an enormous hip and a beautiful head. They were watching for her to come into the ring and Dad had left to look at more horses, so he wasn’t sitting in the stands. Therefore, when the mare came into the ring, Mom bought the horse for $720. “So when dad came back he said,

The foundation of the Loiseau breeding program was Casey’s Ladylove. It is through Casey’s Ladylove that Frances and her husband James started breeding a line of horses that excelled on the track, on the ranch and in the arena. When James passed away, Frances carried on with the help of her family, building the Frenchman line through the “Frenchman Mares.” Elisabeth “Lis” Loiseau Hollmann, daughter of James and Frances, tells the story about how the Frenchman line came to be. “Mom and Dad were farmers in Eastern South Dakota and there were eight of us children in the family. We used to go to horse shows every Saturday and Sunday. We would milk the cows in the morning, then load the horses into a bumper pull trailer that would hold five or six horses in it. Then in the pickup with a stock rack on it they would put two Page 40

Frances was a horse lover from the beginning as this picture shows. She bought this horse from a fellow on his way to World War II.

was a Roberds Mare by the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Peter McCue. The dam of Miss Casey was Nedra, a mare bred by Xenia Casement, Jack Casement’s wife. The sire of Nedra was Red Dog. Her dam was Sanchia, a mare sired by Little Joe Springer,

Nearly everyone in the Loiseau family is involed with the performance horse industry. ‘Frances has that buckskin mare come through.’ She said, ‘Yes and I bought her.’ That was the first time Mom had made an expenditure like that without Dad being there. And he said, ‘Good for you!’ She was the high seller in the sale and they were pretty excited about their new mare. “I was pretty young at the time but what I recall was that they showed her a little bit and my older sister Barbara rode her a lot. She showed her in western pleasure and other events.” It was Casey’s Ladylove’s speed that played a key role in this family of horses. “I remember one night we were riding our horses in the yard,” Hollman says. “We were practicing and a little horserace broke out between my brother and sister with my sister riding Casey’s Ladylove. After the race, I remember them saying, ‘She was like a jack rabbit she was so fast.’ ”

member Jack Casement. Casement bred many fine horses including Red Dog, the sire of Tadpole. Red Dog was sired by the Casement’s foundation sire Balleymooney who was sired by Colonel Concho by Jim Ned. Jim Ned was a grandson of the foundation sire Old Billy. The dam of Red Dog was Cinnabar, a daughter of Old Joe by Harmon Baker. Old Joe was out of a daughter of Jim Ned. Harmon Baker was a son of the AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Peter McCue. The dam of Tadpole was Mae West AQHA #56. She was Coke Roberds bred and sired by Coke T by Brown Dick. Her dam was a Roberds Mare by Peter McCue. Coke T was out of Stockings by Old Fred and her dam

to Red Dog with a 2 X 2 breeding pattern. Casey’s Poco was the sire of a number of ROM including the AQHA Champion Poco Erna. Our Goldie was a second AQHA Champion sired by Casey‘s Poco and a full sister to Casey’s Ladylove. Our Goldie was not only an AQHA Champion, but also an AQHA Superior performer in Western Pleasure. Another full brother to Casey’s Ladylove is Lady’s Stubby, the 1964 Palomino Horse Breeders Association Hall of Fame show horse with 653 PHBA points. Lady Diane is the dam of Casey’s Ladylove. Lady Diane was sired by Mc Rusty, a 1947 son of Joe Tom Mc. Mc Rusty was bred by C. H. McCellan and his dam was a Burnett Mare whose pedigree is unknown. The dam of Lady Diane was Chigger Barnes who was sired by Joe Tom Mc. This gives Lady Diane a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Joe Tom Mc. Joe Tom Mc was bred by the Tom L. Burnett Estate. Tom L. Burnett was the son of Samuel “Burk” Burnett, founder of the Four Sixes Ranch. Joe Tom Mc was sired by the legendary stallion Joe Hancock by John Wilkens by Peter McCue. Joe Hancock was the founder of his own family of quarter horses. Joe Hancock out of the JJ Hancock mare sired by a Percheron Stallion known as the Ralph Wilson horse and she was out of the Mundell Mare, a race mare with an unknown pedigree. The dam of Joe Tom Mc was a mare listed in my copy of the AQHA Stud Book as a mare by Red Buck P-393. Red Buck was a son of Buck Thomas a Coke Roberds bred horse used on the Burnett Ranches. Buck Thomas was sired by Peter McCue and out of Stockings by Old Fred. The AQHA registration application for Joe Tom Mc indicates that the Red Buck mare was later registered as Triangle Lady 40. Her dam is listed as a Burnett mare pedigree unknown. Page 42

with Mom and that is when they were leased by Pat and bred to the Cowan studs like Sun Frost. That is when all the colts were named PC Frenchman to demonstrate the partnership.” A third change came in 1993 when Hollman and her husband John moved back to South Dakota and took over management of the Frenchman broodmares that became Frenchman Quarter Horses at Hot Springs, South Dakota. The Loiseau broodmare band first added four daughters of Casey’s Ladylove that were sired by Laughing Boy. Pat Cowan and his brother-in-law Tex Fulton bought Laughing Boy from Stanley Johnston and Bill McNeil. Johnston and McNeil had bought Laughing Boy in Arizona bringing him to South Dakota. Laughing Boy was an AA rated runner. He was sired by Lightning Bar by Three Bars. The dam of Laughing Boy was Bonnie A by Joe Reed II. The dam of Bonnie A was Adios by Red Cloud by Possum (King) a full brother to Little Joe the grandsire of King P-234.

Cowan had sold them Lady Sunrise, their first registered quarter horse. Pat had a stallion named Laughing Boy and, because of that friendship, they bred to Laughing Boy. Back then Pat Cowan was training racehorses and my parents decided to send some of her offspring to the racetrack. And that turned out to be a pretty successful endeavor.” Hollman notes notes that when her dad became ill and was in the last year of his life, he still did not miss the races. He truly loved his racehorses. “My father always kept the fillies out of Casey’s Ladylove,” Hollman says, describing the start of their broodmare program. “He would sell some of the stud colts, but he

wouldn’t sell the fillies and that became my parent’s broodmare band.” The broodmare band would go through some moves over the years. They started at home, bred to Laughing Boy and Tiny Circus and then to stallions like Leige Lord and the stallions owned by Cowan. “When Dad died in 1977 our mother suffered a broken heart. But she kept on breeding and going to the races running the horses. It was at one of the races when Barry Hutchinson approached her and asked about leasing the mares. So the mares went to Barry Hutchinson in Isabell, South Dakota, for a time.” The next move game a couple of years later. “Pat Cowan visited

The first mare by Laughing Boy and out of Casey’s Ladylove was Frenchman’s Bars. This mare went to the track to run an official AA time. Frenchman’s Bars counts among her foals the ROM runners Frenchman’s Girl and Frenchman’s Mack. The next Laughing Boy mare was Frenchman’s Fox. This 1968 mare went to the racetrack to run a 90 speed index. She won the South Dakota Bred Derby and the South Dakota Bred Futurity. She also won the Cornhusker Championship. She was the first two-year-old to run AAA time in South Dakota. Frenchman’s Fox shows the versatility of the Frenchman line of horses. She is the dam of the racing ROM runner Hutchs Fox by Leige Lord and the NCHA money winner PC Dox Fox by Sun Frost. PC Frostmans Fox is the dam of PC Frosty Fox, winner of over $17,000 in barrel racing. The 1969 foal out of Casey’s Ladylove and sired by Laughing Boy was Frenchman’s Luck, another AA race mare with a speed index of 82. This mare is the dam of Frenchmans Jet by Jet Mack, a two-time stakes winner of the Central State Fair Derby and the South Dakota Derby. Frenchmans Jet is the dam of French Moon Jet by Moon Lark who is stakes placed in the South Dakota Bred Futurity. Frenchmans Leige by Leige Lord is a stakes placed runner in the Aberdeen Futurity. Another ROM out of Frenchman’s Luck was Frenchmans Gojet by Jet Mack. This mare has a speed index of 91 and is the dam of Go Lord Jet by Leige Lord, a ROM gelding with a 91 speed index on the racetrack. Frenchman’s Luck is the granddam of SL Frenchmans Hero, a finalist in the Speedhorse Gold Cup Barrel Futurity. Frenchmans Lady was the last Laughing Boy mare out of Casey’s Ladylove. This 1972 mare has no AQHA race or show record, but produced several excellent foals. The first was Frenchmans Blaze, an ROM show horse with seven points. Frenchmans Blaze was sired by Pueblo Jet. The next foal out of Frenchmans Lady was Lord Alamitos by Leige Lord. Lord Alamitos earned his ROM on the track with an 80 speed index. He was also an NCHA money earner and the SDCHA and BHCHA Amateur Cutting Champion as well as the 1984 WRCA Snaffle Futurity Amateur Champion. Hollman credits Lord Alamitos for the influence of Casey’s Ladylove on barrel racing. As she says, “Certainly Kristie Peterson and Bozo put our bloodline on the map. But prior to that people were using these horses in the barrel futurities, and about 20 years ago Bill Myers had taken Lord Page 44

Alamitos to the track and then in the working cow horse. Myers had Gale Beebe run him in the barrel futurities and they did real well. So girls from South Dakota started to use them in barrel racing.” Lord Alamitos won five barrel racing futurities including the Black Hills Classic, Fizz Bomb Classic, Eight State Barrel Futurity, the Nebraska Cowgirls Futurity and the High Plains. He was then bought and shown by the barrel racing legend Martha Josey. Lady Lord, a full sister to Lord Alamitos, was owned by John and Lis Hollmann who sold her to Mary Bonogofsky. Bonogofsky won the Dodge National Finals on this mare. Cheryl Luman rode her at the 1990 NFR. Lady Lord earned over

$70,000 in WPRA barrel racing. The sire of Lord Alamitos and Lady Lord was Leige Lord. Lord Leige was used on the Frenchman mares during the time Barry Hutchinson had them. Leige Lord was a superior racehorse with a 98 speed index. He was stakes placed in the Saila Fall Futurity. He was the sire of 21 racing ROM, two stakes winners and two stakes placed runners on the track. He is the sire of one Superior performer and three ROM in the arena. His sire is Alamitos Bar by Three Bars. His dam is Bar H Sugar by Sugar Bars and out of Leona Dea by Leo. Frenchmans Guy by Sun Frost was the 1987 foal out of Frenchmans Lady. Frenchmans Guy was purchased by Bill and Debbie Myers.

Frenchmans Guy is the Equi-Stat number #1 all time leading living sire of barrel racing money winners. His foals have earned in excess of $9 million in the arena with over $3.6 million coming from barrel racing. Some of the leading money winners sired by Frenchmans Guy include SX Frenchmans Vanila, winner of $230,000; Guys Famous Girl, winner of $110,786; Frenchmans Lil Lady, $95,101, and Ima Super Fly Guy, $137,034. The latest champion sired by Frenchmans Guy is French First Watch, the 2015 AQHA/PRCA Barrel Horse of the Year. French Wonder by Frenchmans Guy shows the versatility of the Frenchman line of horses, earning $635,000 in bulldogging, carrying his owner Bray Armes and many others to the pay window.

The sire record of Dinero shows the versatility of this line. He is the sire of horses that have won over $3 million, in barrel racing, heading, heeling and bulldogging. PC Frenchmans Flirt, a full sister to Frenchmans Guy, is a broodmare for Frances’ daughter Barb Westover. She is the dam of French Streaktovegas, a finalist in the 2012 BFA Derby and a winner of over $80,000. He is a full brother to French Streakofbling, winner of the 2012 Grid Iron 1D Futurity. Caseys Charm was the 1978 foal out of Casey’s Ladylove, sired by Tiny Circus. Tiny Circus was an ROM racehorse with a 97 speed index and the 1979 AQHA Reserve World Champion Senior Heading Horse. He earned 34 AQHA performance points in tie-down roping, heading, heeling, reining and western pleasure. He was

sired by Tiny Watch, the 1965 AQHA Racing Champion Stallion and the 1966 AQHA Racing Co-Champion Stallion and Aged Stallion. Tiny Watch was sired by Anchor Watch and out of Clabber Tiny by Clabber II. One of Casey’s Charm’s most noted foals was French Flash Hawk by Sun Frost. This great gelding, known as “Bozo” in the rodeo arena, and his rider Kristie Peterson set the world on fire in the 1990s with four WPRCA World Championships and five AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year titles. French Flash Frost, Bozo’s older brother by one year, was second in the 1991 US Team Roping Championships. PC Frenchmans Hayday, or “Dinero” as he is called, is a full brother to Bozo. Dinero is one of those rare individuals that performed in the rodeo arena as a barrel horse and as a team roping horse at the same time. Dinero was an NFR qualifier in barrel racing in 2005 when he helped Sherry Cervi finish third in the average. Dinero was used in team roping in 2005 and was voted to third place in the AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year for heeling. Dinero earned $400,000 in the rodeo arena. The sire record of Dinero shows the versatility of this line. He is the sire of horses that have won over $3 million, in barrel racing, heading, heeling and bulldogging. The leading money winner for Dinero is MP Meter My Hay or, as the world knows her, “Stingray.” Sherry Cervi and Stingray have won two WPRCA World Championships and one title as the AQHA/PRCA Horse of the Year. The mating of Sun Frost and Caseys Charm resulted in two more sons that became sires, PC Frenchmans Mark and PC Frenchman. Both of these stallions have sired foals that have earned over $100,000 in the arena. PC Frenchmans Mark is the sire of SL Frenchmans Dayzee, who won the State 4-H Senior Barrel Racing Championship. Her rider was Kaitlyn Latham, great granddaughter

of Frances Loiseau. The dam of Frenchmans Dayzee is PC Frenchmans Bell by Boon Dox John and she is out of Frenchmans Luck. PCFrenchmansLisbet is a 1992 daughter of Sun Frost and Caseys Charm that is a key part of John and Lis’s broodmare band. She has several daughters and granddaughters in this band of mares. PCFrenchmansLisbet is a producer of multiple barrel racing money winners. Her foals include Frenchmans Isa Dash Reserve Champion, winner of the Roper Rally Futurity, and Frenchmans Belle, a finalist in the Mega Barrel Race Open 4D. Fantastic Frenchman is owned and bred by Mike and Cindy Loiseau of Egan, SD. Fantastic Frenchman is a 2000 son of Frenchmans Guy. His dam is Frenchmans Hooligan by Tuff Time Peppy. The dam of Frenchmans Hooligan is Casey’s Charm. This makes Fantastic Frenchman double bred to Casey’s Ladylove with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to this great mare. Fantastic Frenchman is the sire of Nick Sartain’s good heading horse Sandman. The 2013 WNFR is an example of the success Sartain has had with Sandman. They were third in the WNFR average that year where they placed in rounds 2, 4, 6, 9 and 10 while winning $79,596. Here is another example of line breeding to Casey’s Ladylove through Frenchmans Fabulous, a son of Frenchmans Guy and Casey’s Charm. This stallion has a breeding pattern of 3 X 2 to Casey’s Ladylove. He is a proven show horse in barrel racing, tie-down roping and heeling. He is ROM in the AQHA with 35.5 points. He showed his versatility by carrying Kelsey Lutjen to the 2012 National High School Goat Tying Championship. Frenchmans Fabulous is proving to be a top sire that has earned the distinction of being the #1 siring son of Frenchmans Guy. His foals have Equi-Stat earnings in excess of $250,000. They include KN Fabs Mist of Fame, the 2012 Old Fort Page 45

Days Futurity Champion and the 2013 Old Fort Days Derby Reserve Champion, and Mia Fabulous Fame, the 2013 Arizona HSRA Year-End Barrel Racing Champion. Some of the other foals out of Caseys Charm include Boon Dox Charm a finalist in such events as the Fizz Bomb Futurity; PC Frenchmans Chris, a finalist in the Bold Heart

"Mom had eight children and all are still involved with horses through rodeo, barrel racing and the breeding of horses that are descendants of my parents’ good mares." Frenchmans Topaz is a 1981 daughter of Leige Lord and Casey‘s Ladylove that has contributed to the Hollmann breeding program through her daughters. This mare has her ROM in racing. Her gelding sons, Frenchmans Tiger and Frenchmans Clipper, were purchased by Jan Fisher and were successful barrel horses for her. Frenchman’s Clipper earned over $100,000 and Frenchmans Tiger is a Fizz Bomb Barrel Futurity Reserve Champion and a Fizz Bomb Barrel Derby Reserve Champion. The 1983 foal was Love A Lord. This gelding was the 2001 AQHA Youth Reserve World Champion

Barrel Racing Horse. He earned 41 open performance points and 130 youth performance points, earning a Superior in youth barrels. He was shown by Rachel Moore. The next foal was Caseys Lord who earned an ROM in the AQHA and qualified for the NFR in 2000 with Marlene McRae in the saddle. Both of these foals were sired by Leige Lord. The last foal registered out of Casey’s Ladylove was PC Lady Frances a winner of $40,000 in barrel racing. This daughter of Sun Frost is the dam of Bully For Casey, a finalist in Speedhorse Silver Cup Non-Pro Barrel Futurity. PC Lady Frances is also the granddam of Heza Hot General, a finalist in the BFA World Championship Barrel Futurity. Hollman emphasizes how important family was to her mother and how horses played a significant role in the family. “Mom had eight children and all are still involved with horses through rodeo, barrel racing and the breeding of horses that are descendants of my parents’ good mares. There are several grandchildren and great grandchildren competing on these horses. She loved watching her children and especially her grandchildren compete. She celebrated the success of the horses that were descendants of her good mare.” Hollman offers a litany of family involvement in the horse world today. “Her (Frances’) oldest son Jim and his children and grandchildren compete on Frenchman horses they raise. Daughter Barb Westover has a full sister to Frenchmans Guy that has produced several winning siblings to Frenchstreaktovegas. Son Mike Loiseau and his wife Cindy stand Fantastic Frenchman, and their two children Mikey and Lindsey, and daughter-in-law, Katie, continue

to raise and successfully compete on these horses. Daughter Beverly enjoys raising colts that her son, Will and daughter-in-law, Jessica, campaign. Daughter Mary Kjerstad of Rapid City, and son Charles Loiseau of Frankfort, Kansas, raise and use Frenchmans bred horses for their ranch operations. And of course John and I along with my brother Val are raising our own Frenchman horses.” “She was very proud of her children and grandchildren,” Hollman adds. “She once said that she knew her children were all hard workers, one of the greatest compliments of her generation. Her grandchildren were a great source of pride. She has two grandsons in the military, three granddaughters that are nurses, a grandson in the oil business and several of her grandchildren are involved in their family’s business or farming operations.” When Frances Loiseau passed away, she had asked that her funeral be a combination of both horsemen and her family. She asked six prominent horsemen and friends to be her pallbearers and her grandchildren lead the escort procession to her grave site. This request on her part shows the great love that Frances Loiseau had for her family and the horse industry. Of course, the legacy extends well beyond the family. Jim and Joni Hunt of Open Box Rafter Ranch have included Frenchman bred horses of Frances Loiseau in their production sale for a number of years. Their 2015 sale catalog paid homage to the legacy of this great lady with the following statement: “Frances Loiseau’s vision and enthusiasm will benefit horseman for generations to come…These horses carry the direct influence of her breeding program and efforts!”

Training the Barrel Horse

Work on One Body Part at a Time By Dina Miller When a person first sees a barrel horse come charging down the alley at full speed and then charge, glide, whip, snap around three barrels and head for home, they do not stop and consider the many aspects of the sport. In a mere 13 to 20 seconds (or 30 seconds in the case of Pendleton Round-Up) there are many cues occurring.

further and keep your horse happier. That being said, all of the maneuvers required in barrel racing must be addressed one part at a time. My foundational principle with my students is to separate each part of the horse and send the correct signals to move that part. If you tell a horse’s right front foot to move, the rest of the horse will follow.

As with any equine activity, there are multiple maneuvers involved in barrel racing. The human rider and the thousand-pound animal must speak the same language and have a common understanding of how to properly execute the task at hand. A barrel horse needs to be able to go full speed, gather himself up for an unnatural, tight turn, step around a 55-gallon drum and then take off. This requires a horse to understand, with confidence, what the rider is asking.

I break the horse into five different body parts that we work separately in each lesson. This body part regimen serves as a pre-trip checklist and is a major part of my programming. This routine helps me to set a protocol for how the ride is going to go. And it also allows me the opportunity to repair any “mechanical errors” so that my horse and I are on the same page.

The best way to learn another language is to spend time practicing the basics and build a foundation. Riding a horse is no different. Building a foundation means taking the time to do your homework and establish principles in training that are going to give you and your equine partner a successful performance. As a trainer, I come across many horses that have been competed on more than they have been schooled. Many times barrel racers are in such a hurry to go fast, they neglect important small tasks and times of refreshment for their ponies. They may think they are being diligent by using the latest and greatest feeds and therapy devices; but sometimes diligence comes down to wet saddle blankets. Making run after run does not fix your horse. Making a run and then analyzing what is going wrong and addressing that will go a lot

Nose, neck, shoulders, ribs and hips all need to be working. I begin each ride by asking for a tip of the nose in either direction. I should be able to pick up either rein and have the nose follow the direction of the rein at a standstill, with no movement. Some might call this flexion, but I am looking for a true mental give. A mental give means the horse is committed to obedience. They are not staring off at the outside world, nor pulling against my pressure. I will pick up the rein and draw it towards my swells with a firm and confident pull. Next is the neck. I am seeking a curve in the horse’s neck equivalent to the size of circle I have begun to walk. Ultimately I want to be able to walk a tight circle with a deep bend that is also an athletic stretch; but some horses may need time to work into this. I cue the horse to move forward and once again take hold of the rein and draw it towards my swells – initially not as far as

George Hendrix Photo the nose would go. When the horse gives to this pressure, he is walking at a steady pace in the direction of the circle while uniformly bending his neck. My legs are the tools to catch the body and maintain forward motion, but my hand sets the position and is stable. I often see riders trying to use their hands to correct inconsistency, using a tight outside rein. The outside rein needs to be quite loose, and not confuse the horse with pressure on both sides of his mouth. I call the following exercise “houlders across.” The word across is to help my students understand that the shoulders are going to move laterally, that is across or sideways. Depending on the training level of the horse, I may ask for this from a standstill (advanced) or a walk (intermediate or less.) I have the rider keep her inside arm straight as she moves her hand out to the side. Then the application of outside leg pressure is added to push the horse across. One is looking for the horse to move its inside front leg sideways (nearly under your inside foot) and follow that with his outside leg crossing over the front. In some schools of thought this could be

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Stallion Issue 2016

Page 49

called a “turn on the haunch” or the start to a spin, but I want to stress the importance of the response to the inside rein as if a string is connected from your hand to the horse’s foot. Rib cage movement is another foundational skill that every performance horse needs to have. Often I hear the term “dropping a shoulder” in barrel racing conversations, but in my experience this is more likely a flattening of the ribs. If a rider applies inside leg, it rests on the ribcage and pushes it back into line. By sitting up and riding square on our horses we can achieve this–however the rib must clear to do so. Begin by walking about a 10-foot circle, applying leg pressure in a hugging fashion to the barrel of the horse. As a rider you should be able to physically feel the ribs move away from your leg pressure, creating a smooth bend through the whole body. After your equine companion is responsive to this at a walk and a trot, it is time to progress to a straighter drill. I have my students line their horse up with a specific post on the arena fence line. As they walk towards it, they once again apply leg pressure and a slight lift of the same side rein. One must be conscious to ensure they have “opened the door” with the other side by taking all leg pressure off and using the opposite rein to guide the horse in the direction of travel. This is similar to a “two-track” or leg yield–but I am looking for a virtual sidepass in motion. Why in motion? Everything a barrel horse does is meant to have forward movement so it is beneficial to train this way as

well. For horses that are confused, I do use a fence and sidepass first in order to clarify what I am asking. Hip movement is the final body part in my program. I want to be able to move the hips in or out. The simplest approach to this is to first teach “hip out.” Hip out is once again started in a small circle. The rider moves her leg back in the direction of the back cinch and applies calf pressure. Simultaneously she takes hold of the inside rein and brings it towards her own hip. This creates a slight imbalance that helps the horse understand that we want the hip to move outwards. Goals here involve hip movement without the follow-up of the rein, and crossing the inside foot in front of the outside one as the horse clears his hip out of the circle. This is a beginning drill and I stress the importance of remembering that it is to establish the cue and should not be overdone. After hips out we begin the hip swap. The hip swap also utilizes the rib cage response, so ribs are a prerequisite to this drill. As the rider moves the hips out of the circle, she tips the horse’s nose to the outside, blocks the outside rib, and asks the horse to essentially swap directions while keeping his hip in the direction of travel. The hip swap transfers quickly into the hips in. Being able to move your horse’s hip into the direction of travel sets the foundation for leads, keeping shoulders up and ribs clear. I have students walk around the arena for the hip in drill. With good forward motion, the inside leg bumps the cinch area to “clear the rib” as she picks up on the inside rein to tip the nose in. The outside leg moves back

and pushes the hip to the inside of the arena. Initially this is only to be held for a step or two and the requirement to stay in this position is gradually increased. The final stage is hips in. I have my students walk along the fence line of the arena. The first cue is to tip the nose to the inside, bump with the inside leg to “clear the rib” and simultaneously move her outside leg back to the rear cinch area and push the hip off center to the inside. Initially teaching the body parts can take entire riding sessions, and some horses (and riders) learn the concepts faster than others. After significant repetition it becomes a quick part of one’s warmup and establishes the foundation. Why is this foundation so important? Aside from physical issues, nearly every barrel horse that has been brought to me with some type of “problem” has an area of resistance in one of his body parts that can be tackled by properly diagnosing what body part is blocked or unresponsive. When a horse and rider are taught to understand these segments, fixing problems is a lot easier. Barrel horses need to be responsive to leg cues and learn not to interpret every application of a leg as a request for speed. Horses lacking these skills may still be able to do the job, but the rider may find her enjoyment is diminished and her frustration is increased. Knowing your horse’s body parts and how to move them individually can lead to more enjoyable–and more winning–runs.

The Foundation for the Total Health of your Horse

Feed Supplement

I haven’t seen a product on the market yet that can change a horse as quick as this…. Forco, for us, has been fantastic. Kerry Kuhn We have been feeding Forco for over a year now to all our horses from weanlings to 20 plus year old broodmares. All eat it willingly. We have seen an overall body mass improvement as well as healthier shinier coats. We have not had a single colic episode since incorporating Forco into our feeding program. Thanks Forco! Jeff, Colorado I have been feeding Forco now for almost a month to my barrel horse that has suffered from ulcers and in the past has been very hard to keep weight on. I love this product and have gotten so many compliments on how great my horse looks and how happy and relaxed he looks while running. I have no doubt that is all because his gut is finally healthy, so he feels good… all thanks to Forco! Rachel, North Dakota

Forco Digestive Fortifier is a source of nutrients that feeds the microbial populations in the gut. Forco is a prebiotic which works through the entire system- from the foregut clear through the hindgut and that is why it's so effective.

Working Lines

The Gay Bar King Connection By Larry Thornton

The term “broodmare sire” designates the maternal grandsire in a horse’s pedigree. Many breeders have found that certain sires are more likely to produce good broodmares. This leads to the question: Why do these stallions have an advantage in producing good daughters? One theory for this phenomenon comes from the broodmare sire’s dam. As in humans, the sex of equine offspring is determined by the father. The sex chromosomes of the stallion are X and Y and the sex chromosomes of the mare are X and X. During fertilization the stallion's sperm will either carry an X or a Y chromosome. The mare’s egg

will carry only an X chromosome, because that is all she carries. So the stallion determines the sex of the foal. If he passes an X, the foal will be female; if he passes a Y, then the foal will be male. The stallion received his X chromosome from his mother. Thus we have a direct genetic link between the stallion, his daughters and his mother. When the stallion passes the X chromosome on to his daughters, it comes from his dam. So the mother of the stallion may be instrumental in his success as a broodmare sire. Gay Bar King was a noted sire of performers and gained the distinction

as an outstanding broodmare sire. He sired 43 performance ROM, five AQHA Champions and 14 Superior performance and halter horses. His performers include Mr Bar Gold, an AQHA Champion and the 1966 AQHA High Point Cutting Horse; Gay Bar Lady, 1970 AQHA High Point Junior Cutting Mare, and Pete’s Shop Keeper, the 1977 AQHA High Point Cutting Stallion. The daughters of Gay Bar King have produced foals that have won $8,235,241 in the arena. These performers have earned 13,832.5 AQHA points with 224 performance ROM, 63 superior halter and performance foals, and 13 AQHA

Champions. He is the broodmare sire of such individuals as Magnolia Gay, AQHA High Point Halter Mare; Root Beer Doc, earner of 114 points in four events, and Sugs Gay Lady,

“She was the kind of mare that you could put twine around her nose and show her." Matlock Rose speaking of Gay Widow a former NCHA all time leading money winning mare. Gay Bar King and his legacy as a broodmare sire starts with his mother Gay Widow. Gay Widow was an AQHA Champion and a Superior Halter Mare with a performance ROM. She earned 105 halter points, 15 reining points and one western riding point. She was foaled in 1950 and bred by the AQHA Hall of Fame breeder Jess L. Hankins. Gay Widow was owned by Julia Reed Russell and trained by Matlock Rose.

suggested that Gay Widow be bred to Three Bars in 1957. Three Bars was a well-known sire of racehorses that later won Championships titles on the track. Three Bars is credited with revolutionizing quarter horse racing in the 1950s. He was the sire of 124 stakes horses and 14 Quarter Running Champions including Pokey Bar (Champion Two and ThreeYear-Old Colt of 1961 and 62) and Bunny's Bar Maid (Co-Champion Two-Year-Old Filly of 1961). The success of Three Bars as a sire on the track led to success in the arena as his sons and daughters began to earn halter and performance points. His arena performers earned 36 performance ROM and 29 AQHA Championships, and he was the broodmare sire of 17 AQHA Champions. His foals include the Supreme Champions Kid Meyers, Bar Money, Fairbars and Goldseeker Bar. Three Bars was a son of Percentage, who was sired by Midway. Midway was a son of Ballot

thoroughbred, but is very active today in the quarter horse because of the success of Three Bars. Gossip Avenue was the dam of Percentage. She was a granddaughter of Disguise by the great speed sire Domino. The dam of Three Bars was Myrtle Dee, a daughter of Luke McLuke. Luke McLuke was a son of the double-bred Domino stallion Ultimus. This gives Three Bars a 5 X 5 X 5 breeding pattern to Domino through Disguise and Ultimus. Myrtle Dee was out of Civil Maid by Patriot, a son of Ben Brush. Gay Widow brought the South Texas Quarter Horse blood of Old Billy into the pedigree. Her sire was King P-234. King P-234 is an AQHA Hall of Fame member and the sire of 84 AQHA ROM performance horses and 20 AQHA Champions. He is the broodmare sire of 50 AQHA Champions. King P-234 was sired by Zantanon by Little Joe. Little Joe was sired

In the February 1968 Quarter Horse Journal story “Matlock Rose” by Jane Pattie, Rose called Gay Widow, “The best reining pony I ever rode... I showed her 18 times when she was a junior horse and I beat the aged horse every time but one. She won 17 Grand Champions and one reserve.” Matlock Rose had a great deal of admiration for Gay Widow, a mare he called “one nice mare.” “She was the kind of mare that you could put twine around her nose and show her,” stated Rose. Rose described Gay Widow as a “pretty mare” that was a “standout halter mare with class that could compete with the modern day horse.” He found himself winning at reining and halter at shows such as Fort Worth with this great mare. It was Rose that

Zantanon. She was sired by Billy, not to be confused with the foundation sire Old Billy. This Billy was sired by Big Jim and out of McFadden. Some pedigree authorities report that Big Jim was sired by Sykes Rondo. The dam of Jeanette was by Sykes Rondo, making Zantanon 3 X 4 X 3 linebred to Sykes Rondo. Jabalina, the dam of King, was a daughter of Strait Horse, a son of Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo and out of Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. Yellow Jacket is 2 X 2 inbred to Lock's Rondo. The dam of Gay Widow was Happy Gal by Graves Peeler, a son of Macanudo. Macanudo was sired by Old Sorrel and out of Canales Belle. The dam of Graves Peeler was the mare Petra R2, a daughter of Little Richard by Old Sorrel. Graves Peeler was a full brother to Pep-Up, the broodmare sire of the World Champion Cutting Horses Peppy San and Mr San Peppy. The female family of Happy Gal goes back to the Traveler and Old Billy families. The dam of Happy Gal was Little Gal. Little Gal was sired by Joe Bailey P-4 and out of a mare by Sykes Rondo. Joe Bailey P-4 was sired by Little King, a son of Possum. Possum was a full brother of Little Joe. Both were sired by Traveler and out of Jenny. Little King was out of Nellie by Old Joe by Whalebone by Old Billy. Whalebone was reportedly a full brother to Anthony, the sire of May Mangum. Whalebone was the sire of Lock’s Rondo. Joe Bailey’s dam was called the Brown Nixon Mare. She was by Nixon’s Joe Bailey. Her dam was the Nixon Mare by a son of Anthony. In 1967 Gay Widow returned to the court of Three Bars. The mating produced Gay Tejana Bar who became a stakes placed runner in the 1971 South Texas Sprint Championship at Lubbock Downs with a third place finish. She had a speed index of 85 on the track. Gay Widow was the dam of eight other foals from five other stallions. Her 1961 foal, Lone Star Concho by

Poco Stampede, has no show record, nor does her foal Little Red Cloud by Joe Blair. From 1964 to 1967, Gay Widow produced four foals by Otoe. Only two were performers, Otoe's Gay Widow and Gay Wardancer. Gay Wardancer was the only point earner with nine AQHA working points. Gay Red Baron, Gay Widow's 1970 foal by Bar The Door has no show record. A breeding to Doc Bar resulted in Koshari, who has no record as a performer. James Springer bought Gay Bar King in January 1967 from George Tyler and Matlock Rose. Tyler and Rose had just purchased Gay Bar King from Russell, when they sold the horse to Springer who turned him over to Doc Spence to train. Spence took over the reins from Bubba Casio. Gay Bar King’s show ring experience was limited. His record shows that he was an NCHA money earner of just $35. He earned 13 AQHA Halter points with three Grand Championships and one Reserve Grand Championship. His AQHA

record shows that he earned six AQHA cutting points earning an ROM. Spence says he earned his six cutting points at a show in Brenham, TX. The judge was B. F. Yates and he placed Gay Bar King in a first place tie with the great cutting horse Cross

"...one of the greatest things about him (Gay Bar King) was that you could breed him with a variety of mares. You could breed any cross and that was the beautiful thing about him.” Jim Daniels Timber. Shortly after this show, Gay Bar King was diagnosed with a navicular problem and he was retired.

Jim Daniels of Brenham, TX, stood Gay Bar King for Jim Springer for several years. Daniels remembers breeding a lot of mares over those years. He says that Gay Bar King was a successful sire because, “one of the greatest things about him was that you could breed him with a variety of mares. You could breed any cross and that was the beautiful thing about him.” Daniels admittedly preferred mares

with King P-234 blood to the others. Daniels stressed that you could not get too much King P-234 breeding crossed with Gay Bar King. Three excellent examples are Gay Tom, Gay Bar Blues and Gay Bar’s Gen. Gay Tom was an NCHA Bronze Award winner with earnings of $22,717. He was out of King’s Punkin, an own daughter of King P-234. King’s Punkin was out of Red Molly B, who was sired by Gravis Horse by Chicaro. The second dam of King’s Punkin was listed as a Sorrel Mare by a horse known as a Little Joe Colt. Three time NCHA World Champion Non-Pro Cutting Horse Gay Bar Blues and his full sister, Nellie Gay, are out of Nellie Gray Ann, a granddaughter of Poco Bueno by King P-234. Nellie Gray Ann was out of Melody Ann by Sugar King.

Page 72

Dix R. Turnbow, Brenham, TX, had a great deal of success with the Gay Bar King bred cutting horses. He won the NCHA Non-Pro World Championship three times riding Gay Bar Blues. Turnbow noted that Gay Bar King was a Three Bars stud out of a King P-234 mare. “One of the very best King mares to ever live,” he said. Turnbow explained that Gay Bar King got his producing ability from combining Three Bars and King because “they were two of the greatest performance horse sires to ever live.”

According to Turnbow, “Gay Bar King's success as a broodmare sire is based on his daughters inheriting that long smooth sweeping motion and passing it on to their foals.” He found that this “long sweeping motion” was an excellent blend with the “handiness of the Doc Bar bred horses.” The ability of Gay Bar King to cross with mares carrying the blood of King P-234 and Doc Bar is evident in Gay Bar’s Gen. Gay Bar’s Gen by Gay Bar King is out of the double bred King mare Princess Piper. Princess Piper was by El Rebo King by King P-234. She was out of Sandpiper by Bay Bob by King P-234. This gives Gay Bar’s Gen a 3 X 3 X 4 breeding pattern to King P-234. Gay Bar’s Gen carried Carol Rose to three NCHA Non-Pro World Champion titles and one NCHA NonPro Reserve World Championship. She has garnered the NCHA Bronze and Silver Awards with $37,639 in earnings. She also earned 74 AQHA cutting points to earn a Superior.

As a producer, Gay Bar’s Gen has three NCHA money earners including Genuine Doc by Doc Bar. Genuine Doc was an AQHA Reserve World Champion in Senior Cutting and an AQHA Superior Cutting Horse with 55 points. Genuine Doc has proven to be a good all around sire. His foals have earned over $600,000 in cutting competitions. He is a noted reining horse sire with foals like Genuine Strawflower and Shining Spark, both AQHA World Champion Reining Horses. This makes Gay Bar Peggy the successful cross of Gay Bar King on the Old Sorrel line. Gay Bar King foals show that his ability as a sire goes beyond King P-234 bred mares. One of the lines

When Gay Bar King’s daughters were bred to Peppy San, they have produced the likes of Peppy Lit San (earnings of $5,708) and Peppy Peggy San (earnings of $8,882). Peppy San was a son of Leo San by Leo by Joe Reed II and out of Miss Peppy Belle by Pep-Up, the full brother to Graves Peeler. Thus there is linebreeding back to these full brothers in the Gay Bar King/Peppy San cross as well as a cross to Joe Reed P-3. Peppy Lita San is out of Gay Bar Lita, a full sister to Gay Bar’s Gen, reinforcing the success of Gay Bar King with King bred mares. Peppy Peggy San is out of Gay Bar Peggy

Gay Bar’s Gidget is the dam of six point earners including the two time AJQHA World Champion Brinks Misty Te, AJQHA World Champion Pay’s Gidget and AQHA Champion Pay Stringer. The dam of Gay Bar’s Gidget is Misty Cody by Ben Cody by Bill Cody a linebred Old Sorrel stallion. Zan Parr Express was the 1993 AQHA High Point Reining Horse. He earned 128 AQHA points with an AQHA Championship and a Superior in reining. His foals include The Hot Express, a two time AQHA High Point All-Around Stallion and Lil Hot Express, an AQHA High Point Reining Horse. He is also the sire of Sparkin Express, an NRHA Futurity Finalist. Sparkin Express is out of the great mare Diamonds Sparkle. Zan Parr Express was sired by Zan Parr Bar and out of Gay Bar Moon by Gay Bar King.

The success of Gay Bar King with Doc Bar carried down through the sire line. Smart Chic Olena is one of those horses. He was sired by Smart Little Lena by Doc O’Lena by Doc Bar. He was out of Gay Sugar Chic by Gay Bar King. He won $129,000 in cutting and reining. He was the 1990 AQHA World Champion Cutting Horse and the 1993 AQHA World Champion Reining Horse. The dam of Smart Little Lena was Smart Peppy by Peppy San. Smart Chic Olena carries a cross to Peppy San and this gives us a linebreeding pattern to the full brothers Graves Peeler and Pep-Up.

Happy Gal was the second dam of Gay Bar King. Gay Bar Lady by Gay Bar King shows his affinity for mares of the Old Sorrel sire line. She is an AQHA Champion with 109 cutting points and a superior in cutting. She is out of Keepsakes Bay, a daughter of Scooter S by Silver King. Silver King was an own son of Old Sorrel. When Deena Gay by Gay Bar King was bred to Magnolia Pay, she produced one of the greatest halter mares of all time in Magnolia Gay. Magnolia Gay was the 1972 and 1974 High Point Halter Horse with 941 halter points and 72 performance points. She is the full sister to Ruffian Pay and Deena Pay, both superior halter horses. Magnolia Gay is a great producer in her own right. She is the dam of several noted show horses including Noble Tradition, a four time AQHA World Champion Halter Horse that is also a sire of World Champions. The legacy of Gay Bar King has carried down through the years with significant influence from the female side of the pedigree. This great stallion is still #16 on the EquiStat Leading Maternal Grandsire list with cutting money earnings of $8,676,144. This includes all cutting horse earnings through the NCHA

Shining Spark has followed the example of Gay Bar King as an outstanding broodmare sire. It has to be noted that Diamond Sparkles is the dam of Shining Spark and it is her X chromosome that he passes to his daughters. However, there is also the influence of Gay Bar King in the foals of Shining Spark through Genuine Doc who was out of Gay Bar’s Gen. The Shining Spark daughters have produced the winners of $10 million in all phases of arena performance. His leading reined cow horse money winners out of his daughters include CD Dive Dee, ($178,255); She’s Shinettas CD ($163,568); Blind Sided ($154,263),

Smart Chic Olena is out of Gay Sugar Chic by Gay Bar King, making him a direct grandson of Gay Bar King. Smart Chic Olena is like Shining Spark in that he took his wins in the arena and became a great sire of all around performance horses. He has sired foals that have won in excess of $12 million in all phases of performance. Some of his leading money winners include Smart Spook with earnings of ($405,650); Travelin Jones ($175,810), and Commandalena ($121,569). Smart Chic Olena is the #2 all time leading maternal grandsire of reining horse money earners with earnings of over $7 million. His leading money winner as a broodmare sire is Wimpys Little Chic, the all time leading money winning reining horse. Smart Chic Olena is the EquiStat #12 all time leading money winning broodmare sire in the reined cow horse division. His foals out of his daughters have earned nearly $1.2 million. His leading money winners in the category are Shiners Dun Juan ($115,417); Roosters Chicago ($60,025), and Chickarey ($52,755). The Equi-Stat leading money winning reiner for 2014 is Wimpy Chic by Wimpys Little Step and he is out of Chics Fancy Lady by Smart Chic Olena. Wimpy Chic earned $166,875 in 2014. Smart Chic Olena was the Equi-Stat second leading maternal grandsire in 2014 with earnings of $1,130,815. The influence of Gay Bar King through Gay Bar King and Shining Spark is seen in the foals that carry the blood of both of these stallions. Smart Spooks is one of those, a great reining horse with earnings of $405,650 with wins in the NRHA

Smart Chic Olena is the #2 all time leading maternal grandsire of reining horse money earners with earnings of over $7 million. Open Futurity, NRHA Open Derby and an AQHA World Championship in Junior Reining. He is the leading money winner sired by Smart Chic Olena. Smart Spook is now a $2 million dollar sire and was the 2014 third leading sire, with foals earning $636,734. The leading money winner by Smart Spook for 2014 is Shine N Spook with earnings of $162,919. Shine N Spook is out of a daughter of Shining Spark. Some others sired by Smart Spook and out of Shining Spark mares include Spook Off Spark, ($147,788) and Spook Dance, ($39,659).

The dam of Shesouttayourleague is the all time leading money winner in NRHA reining, Wimpys Little Chic, who is out of Collena Chic Olena by Smart Chic Olena. This places Shining Spark and Smart Chic Olena in her pedigree with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to these two stallions and a breeding pattern of 6 X 5 to Gay Bar King.

Futurity Champion is Starlight Kisses by Shady Lil Starlight. The dam of Starlight Kisses is Kiss My Shiny Lips by Shining Spark. The dam of Kiss My Shiny Lips is Lipschic by Smart Chic Olena. This gives Kiss My Shiny Lips a breeding pattern of 1 X 2 to Shining Spark and Smart Chic Olena and a breeding pattern of 4 X 4 to Gay Bar King.

Collena Chic Olena is the dam of three foals, all NRHA money earners. The other two foals are Collenas Finest Taffy, NRHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion, and Collenas Little Wimp, The Tradition Reining Futurity Levels 3 and 2 Open Champion. Collena Chic Olena is in the NRHA Hall of Fame.

The success of Gay Bar King as a sire of performers is well documented in the performance horse industry. He was a sire that “nicked” with a variety of bloodlines that enhanced his success as a sire.

The 2015 NRCHA Snaffle Bit

But his success as a sire leads back to his success as a broodmare sire, with genetic ties between Gay Bar King daughters and their grandmother, the great mare Gay Widow.

Shesouttayourleague is the winner of the High Roller Reining Classic Tamarak Ranch Futurity. This mare is sired by Walla Walla Whiz, who is out of Shiny Walla Wanda by Shining Spark. Walla Walla Whiz is the winner of $187,820 in NRHA reining and he is now a million dollar sire in the NRHA.

Shoulder Pain: Causes & Treatment Part 2*

By Jay Merriam, DVM, MS When discussing shoulder pain it’s fairly common to look only at the obvious areas, the so-called point of the shoulder. It’s the bend and the fulcrum which provides most of the forward momentum, the steering, lead changes and usually the first part of the stop. It’s where all of the external loads applied to the horse via riding, driving, pulling or chasing come to the body. It absorbs, distributes and re-directs instantly as pressures are applied. It takes the brunt of most kicks, falls, fence crashes and other trauma while mainly overlooked as a starting point of lameness or, more commonly, poor performance problems. Not having a direct bony connection to the rest of the body gives it the tremendous flexibility we see in work like cutting, roping, jumping or negotiating rough, back country trails while loaded. That is also sometimes a disadvantage when doing sliding stops or extremely collected work. Let’s take a deeper look now at a few of the problems we see there, and the anatomy that makes them happen. De-nervation Injuries Aside from sensing pain or injury, the nerves work in a series of interconnected groups. They are essential for balance, positioning and response to forces generated by movement. They report each small shift in weight or movement to the spinal cord and brain. They also control blood flow to individual muscles and groups, thus controlling growth, repair and even conditioning. So the sudden loss of nerve supply can be catastrophic (think: getting up from the couch, realizing too late that one leg is asleep, and over you go!). But the slow loss of nerve supply to an area is also a potential

catastrophe, and more common than one might think. Horses that pull heavy loads, plows or wagons are quite prone to a gradual de-nervation injury of the shoulders that can be permanent, disabling and, by the time it’s noticed, too far along to fix. Sweeny is the name given to nerve and muscle atrophy of the suprascapular muscles. They are the ones coursing down from the withers to the point of the shoulder, and constant pressure from an ill fitting collar and a heavy load will ultimately crush and disable them. As the disease progresses, the stride of that leg will shorten, the toe will drag and wear off and the shoulder will swing out. This was

a common injury a generation ago, when farms moved on horse power of the equine kind. But how does it apply today to our “working” horses who mainly go under saddle and don’t pull? There are many causes that can create this, mainly trauma: a crash into a hard obstacle, a kick from a horse too close, a pack saddle slipped unnoticed for hours while packing a load to a cow camp… the list goes on. Recognition is the key. A horse who has been kicked in the point of the shoulder who suddenly shows symptoms of this will usually respond well to bute, topical DMSO and ice, and be ready to ride again soon, especially if there is no broken

The shoulder anatomy is complex but critical to understand if we are to train our horses well.

skin. Horses who have suffered a general chest wound to the area may also be temporarily paralyzed, but will respond well to the above treatments. Any such paralysis that doesn’t improve in 48 hours is usually permanent. Scapular Fracture This is also a traumatic injury, caused by kicks, car or trailer wrecks and any of the hundreds of ways horses find to get into trouble. The scapula or shoulder blade reaches the withers, but doesn’t connect. Fractures are usually very significant, not very repairable surgically and usually heal irregularly. Confinement in a tie stall for several months is usually as effective as surgery. Bicipital Bursitis This is a real working horse problem and goes undiagnosed in many cases. The point of the shoulder is where most extension comes, and also where the load associated with hard stops and quick turns is the biggest. It’s where the radial nerve and all of the major extensor muscles and tendons are funneled into a bony channel and tasked with controlling the lower leg. To help with all that, there is a tendon sheath that lubricates them as they work. And under all that is a round gristled fluid sac, the bicipital bursa, that provides an extra level of shock absorption and cushion to the structures as they work. It’s not very big, not easily felt; but when it’s painful, the horse will tell you. It’s what made generations of horsemen complain to the vet that their horse, which actually had navicular disease, had sore shoulders. In fact, he did! But in horses with navicular disease, you could treat the shoulders all day long and he’d still be lame. In a horse with bicipital bursitis, he

won’t be lame, but he won’t extend, roll back off the shoulders or dance in front of a calf the way he should. And no amount of bute will make it go away. To diagnose, we first make sure there isn’t some other problem. Then slowly massage the front of the shoulder above the point, moving down slowly, fingers curled to the inside. As you probe deep, you may get a sudden stab of resistance, the foot pulled away, the neck muscles tensed and the worst ones will give you a solid bite! It takes practice, anatomical knowledge and some experience to find it; but when you do it’s pretty clear. It can be confirmed with ultrasound. Treatment involves looking for the root cause. Usually it’s found to be under-conditioning/overuse on a particular move, heavy or inappropriate shoeing (it’s very common in long-footed Saddlebreds, Morgans, etc). It’s also common in young cutters being pushed a bit too fast, then locked in a stall for 23 hours till the next session. Once the pain has been found and a diagnosis established, a “quick fix” of any of several types of antiinflammatories around (not in) the bursa will help. And in acute cases, topical DMSO gel or ice will also help. Again, getting to the root cause is critical or any treatment will be temporary. Excessive toe length will also cause this, especially on horses that jump. Direct Muscle Injuries When we think of tying up, Monday morning sickness, EPSSM or any other direct muscle injuries we generally think of something that affects the entire body at once. But in horses that work doing the same moves over and over, like young

Page 80

cutters in training, the chances for local injury increase. They, too, can get “repetitive motion injuries”–they just don’t get Workman’s Comp when they do! Careful examination and palpation of the entire shoulder girdle is a necessary part of good maintenance. It’s easy to do while grooming and gets you “in touch” with your mount. These injuries are why massage therapists can make a good living and why good management, nutrition and conditioning are critical to success. Keeping a horse’s shoulders fit and working well is just one more way we can increase our enjoyment and their welfare. They are also subject to arthritis, OCD and all of the other “-itis” types of injury. Most of these are preventable and all respond better if found and treated early on.

*Part 1 “Shoulders & Withers Pain” appeared in the August/September 2015 issue. Dr. Merriam, a sport horse/lameness vet, has spent most of his career working on horses that race, jump, slide or pull. He has taught Equine Surgery and lameness at several university clinics and owned a six-vet equine practice in Massachusetts. Now a resident of Colorado, he spends his time consulting as well as running The Equi-tarian Initiative (www. equitarianini-tiative.org), a charity that provides veterinary training and service in the developing world, from Mexico to Morocco.

Hoof Cinch was designed to relieve the pain of laminitis by applying pressure to the front of the hoof wall where the laminae have failed. The constant pressure forces the hoof wall to grow back closer to the coffin bone, allowing them to realign. The Hoof Cinch typically takes 12-16 weeks, and can be used on both acute and chronic cases of founder. There is no special trimming or shoeing required, but we suggest elevating the heels. Also available The Lift, a therapeutic device designed to relieve the pain and inflammation caused by Navicular Syndrome. Hunter’s Bump

More Common in Jumpers, It Can Occur in Any Horse By Patricia Holl Named after the sport in which it is so prevalent, “hunter’s bump,” also known as “jumper’s bump,” is a painful pelvic condition that may cause gait abnormalities and can affect performance. Though it often occurs in jumping horses, hunters, and steeplechasers, it can happen to any horse. A hunter’s bump is a protrusion of the tuber sacrale. This is the area of the pelvis that will appear elevated along the lower part of a horse’s back, just above the croup. Technically, this is a subluxation of the sacroiliac joint, which may involve injury to the ligaments securing the pelvis and the spine, as well as to the muscles and tendons which affect the action of the hip and pelvis. Once this happens, the ilium (one side of the pelvis) can shift upward, resulting in the distinguishing bump. The unaffected side may appear lower, and is often referred to as a dropped hip This injury is commonly the result of previous and repetitive trauma to the sacroiliac joint, rather than a single precipitating incident, though it is

usually one event that pushes it over the edge. Best viewed from behind during gait, the horse will tend to be very stiff in the hindquarters, will display a shortened stride on the affected hind limb, “unload” weight onto the unaffected side and may resist movement in general. The stress from the injured tissue can result in chronic pain in the affected joint. As the horse compensates for the injury, symptoms may manifest in areas far from the injured region. These symptoms include lameness, pain and stiffness in the low back, or even in the neck, and he may resist turning in one direction or another. This condition can certainly affect collection and engagement. When diagnosed early, treatment for hunter’s bump can be highly effective. Stall rest is often initially recommended to allow time for the soft tissue to heal and scarring to occur to provide stability. Anti-inflammatories and muscle relaxants may be prescribed by your veterinarian to reduce spasm and manage inflammatory processes.

Chiropractic treatment can be highly effective in managing hunter’s bump. Chiropractic restores motion to the affected joints, re-aligns the pelvis and beneficially influences the neurology of the tissue. By restoring motion with chiropractic adjustments, you take the stress off the injured muscles and tendons and accelerate recovery. Additionally, integrative treatments such as acupuncture and massage can be highly effective in controlling pain and supporting the healing process. Recovery will depend on accurate diagnosis, degree of injury and speed and quality of treatment. Remember the importance of healthy conditioning, proper saddle fit, weight management and stable footing. Above all, become familiar with your horse. Observe their behaviors, and identify when they’re communicating that something is wrong. If you suspect something is amiss, don’t delay. Caring for every aspect of your horse will ensure a lifetime of health and well-being.

Healing Horses with Herbs

Alternative Treatment for Colic By Chance Schuknecht Distribution Manger Silver Lining Herbs When I was 20 years old my future wife, Kyla, had the best horse she has ever owned. His name was Tequila and he was a gentle buckskin gelding that stood 16 hands tall, and weighed 1400 pounds. He meant everything to her. He was a family bred and raised horse from Southern Utah, that had put the miles on at the ranch, had good fundamentals put on him in the arena, and had the ability to be a good one. Kyla took him to college with her and worked hard to train him. She started to season him as a breakaway and barrel horse. During the fall college rodeos Tequila and Kyla were in the top ten at every rodeo and won both rounds and the average at the Dayton, IA, rodeo. It was a great way to start off their career together, and a good way to end the year going into winter. After being turned out for the winder, Kyla brought him back to college to start getting him into shape for the spring rodeos, but on March 23, the worst happened-he started to colic. I remember loading Tequila up with Kyla and taking him to the vet. Once we were there, they rushed him into surgery as the medications weren’t improving his condition. Sometime later the vet came to Kyla and told her the news, “Your horse didn’t make it.” As you can imagine, Kyla was devastated and there was nothing I could do or say to make the situation better. As I hugged her and tears rolled down her face, I could only think of her broken dreams,

and I wish we could have stopped this from happening. I wish we could have helped Tequila out sooner. Years later, I started working for Silver Lining Herbs where I have learned life-changing lessons. Knowledge that isn’t taught in books, and experiences, I will forever remember. One of those lessons was with a

customer’s horse. I received a call from a mom, whose daughter had her horse at a nearby vet clinic. The horse was colicking, and in rough shape. The mom asked if I could help and so I went to the clinic to see if anything could be done. When I got there the daughter’s eyes were red from crying and the horse looked beat up from a long night of belly aching. The young girl told me that her horse hadn’t had a bowel movement in 18 hours and all the medication and oils were not helping. She couldn’t afford surgery, and the vet suggested putting the horse down.

What I did next was to get Silver Lining Herbs #17 Kolik Eaz out and paste it to him about every 15 minutes. Thirty minutes went by, no change. Sixty minutes went by, no change. Ninety minutes went by, no change. Then at the two hour mark that horse had a bowel movement. The young lady was elated, and you could see

relief in the horse. Slowly the horse started to make further improvements and eventually made a full recovery. I gained true conviction in the Kolik Eaz that day, and I know as long as a horse doesn’t have a twisted gut that will be the only support I use. Some lessons are hard learned in this life. I wish I knew about the Kolik Eaz for my wife’s horse, but I know I’m glad to have the knowledge I do to help someone else. And I know that I will always have Silver Lining Herbs’ 17 Kolik Eaz on hand, just in case.

Instantly I thought of my wife and her horse, Tequila. There is no way I wanted that girl to go through that heartbreak and looking at the horse, you could see in his eyes that he wasn’t ready to quit the fight.

5 Tips for a Smooth Fall Forage Transition Shorter days and colder temperatures can only mean one thing: Autumn has arrived, and winter is close behind. For horses, this means that the lush pasture they enjoyed munching on in the warm sunshine will now be replaced by hay. For horse owners, it means making sure that the transition from pasture to hay is a healthy one. “When winter arrives, horses must be in good condition to withstand colder temperatures,” said Karen E. Davison, Ph.D., equine sales and support manager, Purina Animal Nutrition. Dr. Davison shares these five tips to help ensure a smooth transition from pasture to hay, and to formulate a sound fall and winter feeding plan. 1. Gauge grain rations. Fall is an important time to evaluate the quality of forage available for your horse and whether the grain ration is appropriate and adequate to meet nutritional requirements. Hay and pasture generally don’t provide the same level of nutrition. To ensure your horse remains in good condition throughout the cold-weather months, evaluate and adjust grain rations in the early fall to prevent weight loss due to lower-quality forage. If your horse needs to gain weight, there is still time to do so before the really cold weather sets in. 2. Avoid late-fall gorging. While the sugars produced by pasture plants are used to fuel their growth in warm temperatures, colder fall nights hinder growth and sugars are stored for later use. This concentration of stored sugars may increase the risk of digestive upset or laminitis in some horses. Horses most at risk are those that are significantly overweight or have trouble managing normal blood sugar levels and are

sensitive to dietary sugar content. 3. Guard against colic. Drastic swings in temperature and changing weather conditions – combined with the major adjustment of moving from pasture to hay ― can increase the chances of digestive issues. While not scientifically proven, a number of horse owners and veterinarians have experienced what appears to be an association between weather events such as changes in barometric pressure or dramatic fluctuations in ambient temperatures and incidence of colic in horses. “A dramatic drop in temperature often causes horses to drink less water and, at the same time, horse owners will often increase the amount of hay fed to help their horse stay warm,” said Dr. Davison. “More hay and less water consumption may contribute to impaction colic. Add a couple ounces of loose salt with the feed ration to encourage water consumption during cold spells.” 4. Take it slow. Switching from pasture to hay or even just getting a new supply of hay represents as big a change to your horse’s digestive system as a change in grain. Make the changeover from pasture to hay gradually to decrease the risk of digestive upset. 5. Ensure hay quality. Horses should be fed consistent, goodquality hay to maximize nutrition and minimize the potential for digestive problems. Good-quality hay should: • have a high leaf-to-stem-ratio, • be free of weeds, dirt, molds and other contamination, • have small-diameter stems,

contain few seed heads or blooms, have a fresh smell and appearance, be a bright color (a faded, yellow or brown color may indicate old hay or poor storage conditions).

Plant maturity is the main factor in hay quality: Young, leafy, immature plants contain more protein, energy and minerals than older plants with thicker stems. Mature plants also contain more lignin, which reduces nutrient availability. Supplement lower-quality hay with higher-quality feed to maintain your horse’s good condition and health. Keeping your horse warm, well-fed and adequately watered during cold weather will help ensure he will be healthy and ready to go when spring rolls around.

Sales Report

Frenchmans Quarter Horses at Open Box Rafter Ranch Production Sale Report & Photos By Larry Larson Selectively crossing their Loiseau bred line of foundation broodmares on many of the industry’s leading race and performance sires has proven to be the ticket to success for John and Lis Hollmann. Known as Frenchmans Quarter Horses, their breeding program is located at a new facility west on Old Highway 79 just South of Hot Springs, SD. Carrying on the lineage started by Lis’ parents, James and Frances Loiseau, the line of horses carrying the name ‘French’ or ‘Frenchman’ lends itself to the French ancestry of the Loiseau family name. They were the breeders of such well known horses as French Flash Hawk ‘Bozo’ (multiple WPRA World Champion Barrel Horse); Frenchmans Guy; PC Frenchmans Hayday, etc. To this day, the maternal lines still trace back to Frances’ original purchase of the mare Casey’s Ladylove. (See Mares with More on page 40.) The ranch had a select offering in conjunction with the 2015 Open Box Rafter Ranch Production Sale held September 12, 2015, at the Central States Fairgrounds in Rapid City, South Dakota. Topping the sale was Jess Vegas, a 2009 ranch raised stallion out of Sixes Vegas by Paddys Irish Whiskey. His sire is Mr Jess Perry SI 113 and he left the ring on a bid of $53,000 from the Schaack Ranch (Clay and Holly Schaack), Wall, SD, and Leon & Amber Garrett from Pierre, SD.

A Cinch to Fix Founder! ✷Works with or without shoes ✷ Stops the pain quickly ✷ Realigns the coffin bone to the hoof wall ✷ Painless application ✷ Easy to apply Only $60 a set! plus s&h

Also available: The Lift, a therapeutic device designed to relieve the pain and inflammation caused by Navicular Syndrome. Page 104

Real Estate Market Report

Stability in values defines most segments John A. Stratman Associate Broker Mason & Morse Ranch Company At Mason & Morse Ranch Company we cover a variety of market segments including farm, ranch and recreation/lifestyle properties. So far in 2015 trends in the real estate markets have been stable. Most buyers are looking for income generation and/or value in their purchases. Buyers are cautions for a variety of reasons relating largely to the economy, interest rates, taxation and regulation. Prospective sellers are reluctant to price their properties realistically due to concern of what they would do with their money. Generally, inventory is limited for good to excellent quality farm and ranch lands. There has been consistent demand from ranch buyers and the trade has been active. However, the lower cattle market may cause buyers to pull back as the economic gross margin has declined significantly. Recreation lands and lifestyle properties continue to have excess inventory; however, when the right buyer is paired with the right property, prices have been very strong. We expect the remainder of 2015 and early 2016 will continue to show a stable to upward trend, subject to the effect of possible tightening of credit markets and possible changes in taxation overall. Taking a closer look at specific markets, we observe the following trends: Working ranch prices have been on an increasing trend due to the demand for grass pasture and hay resulting from the strong cattle market and heifer retention related to herd rebuilding. The inventory of

working ranches is tight; however, we expect to see a slight increase in inventory over time as people rationalize with selling their ranch now that cattle prices have seen their “top” in the market. The uncertainty of comparatively low capital gain taxes and the possibility of increasing interest rates should be weighed by sellers as they decide on their real estate marketing plans. Farmland values have been stable and the better farms have held value while marginal production farms have declined as hay and grain prices softened over the last two years. Areas with specialty or perishable crops such as vegetables, nuts and tree fruit are seeing continued upward prices, especially in light of the drought on the West Coast. There is, however, still strong interest from large and small investors as well as family farm operators for additional farmland and the favorable interest rate environment will keep that demand intact for now. Some concern about the future prices is felt due to the prospect of continued low commodity prices, the expected lower revenue from farm programs and the possibility of higher capital cost. Recreation and lifestyle properties include several sub-categories including: hunting and fishing properties, horse properties and rural lifestyle and estate properties. Fishing properties have continued to sell very well with limited inventory. Top quality hunting properties have had strong interest and sales. The Northern Rocky Mountains have seen a strong selling season for

Page 120

recreation ranches, while the Pacific Northwest and Central Rockies have seen recreational ranch sales be average or below. Horse properties near the larger urban markets continue to sell very well driven by the growth in the equestrian industry overall. Remote equestrian properties continue to have very long selling periods. Lifestyle ranches and rural estates have been on the uptrend driven by the strong urban economy. We continue to note that “niche” markets for recreation and lifestyle properties will see varying results, due to geographic considerations, lifestyle choices, proximity to amenities such as outdoor recreation, equestrian events, quality of hunting, live water, proximity to population centers and the economy. These factors generally will influence the trend of recreation and lifestyle properties going forward. Overall, we expect continuing demand from buyers due to the significant amount of available cash in the economy and the limited opportunities in other investment classes. Sellers are not highly motivated other than by price and they too see few reinvestment opportunities. While interest rates and capital gains will impact valuations over the next year, we see life’s events and the overall economy having the biggest impact on the available supply of inventory and trends in valuations. Mason & Morse Ranch Company is active in selling real estate in 13 states and represents buyers across much of the United States. www.ranchland.com
