Equine Discussions with Cal Middleton

Add Positivity to Your Training One surefire idea I have learned over the years is that of staying positive while working with your horse. Positivity is powerful in many ways, and is an under-utilized tool when working with any animal. We all know that horses, cattle, dogs and other animals as well as people, definitely respond to the energy of others. Energy flows from us freely to those around us, just as it does from us to a horse or to another pet. Knowing this, you need to be sure you're transmitting the energy you want them to absorb and grow from. I’ve met so many people on planes over the years of traveling. I tell them what I do and they all have the same story, “I rode a horse once, and he ran me into a tree. I think he knew I was scared of him.” The truth is the horse didn't know anything of the sort, but the horse did respond to the nervous and anxious energy the rider was emitting. Be sure your energy is positive, not negative. The Theory Why is positivity important? Training young horses, just as teaching children, is about ideas, emotions, attitude and energy just as much as it is about the turning, stopping, math or reading. They have to learn to focus on good things to end up in a good place. A child, just like a horse, will not learn correctly when consistently scared, mad or in a bad mood. They must be in a teachable state in order to actually learn something. That trainable frame of mind starts with us as the trainer/teacher. If the teacher scolds the class before each subject matter, the chances for learning drop tremendously. If you get your horse out each day and start off by spanking him around, and you get after him for each maneuver that he’s struggling with, it won’t be long until he quits trying. Even if you get him “trained,” he will not be a horse

you can count on and trust consistently. Instilling fear in a horse or a child is never a good thing. We must embrace the philosophy of helping our horses rather than correcting them. Tell them what to do, rather than what not to do. Application How do you make sure your energy is positive? There’s a lifetime of knowledge to be gained on this subject, but there is one simple thing you can do that will really get you on the right path: Think positive thoughts and say positive statements! Tell yourself and those around you that you have a good horse and he tries hard. When you get on your horse, expect that he will be good, give him the benefit of the doubt. Each time he struggles then improves, forgive him in your head without holding a grudge. If you expect the worst, you will definitely get it. Saying positive statements to others will help you stay in a good positive mood. Too often people tell me about a stupid horse that always does this wrong and that wrong and never gets better. Likely they are getting exactly what they expect. A good teacher doesn’t say how stupid a child is; he’ll say a child is struggling with a subject, and then will find a way to help them through it. Remember, in each situation, find a direction to give your horse, rather than a correction. Always focus on what you want your horse to do, instead of what you want them not to do. It’s no different from positive teaching of a child. Instead of saying “no” to everything they do wrong and then ignoring them when they’re good, try ignoring them when they’re bad, and then giving them attention as praise when they are good. Sometimes the only time a child gets attention is when they do something wrong, so they naturally keep doing it.

A horse is no different. A horse may keep jumping to the right because each time he does, you kick him with your right leg, and it’s the struggle/attention that he keeps looking for. Do not wait for him to act up so you can correct him. Instead, ask for what you want, then reward him when you get it. Examples–People, Dogs, Horses When working with children the word “no” alone, should be used only as an answer to a question. When a child is doing something you don’t want them to do, like picking up your cell phone, ask them to do what you want–“Put that down, please.” Then thank them politely and let it go at that. When a dog is performing an unwanted behavior like jumping up on you, instead of saying “no,” use already understood direction words like “lay down” or “kennel,” and then reward him for completing the task; or simply move him into the next room and give him a chew toy or a treat. When you’re standing next to your horse and she starts to paw or bite at your clothing or rub her head on you as if you were a scratching post, instead of whacking her as a correction (as if saying No!), just tell her to move her feet by applying firm but kind pressure to her halter, face, etc., then release as a reward when she moves her feet. She is merely asking you what to do by trying different unwanted behaviors, so tell her what to do, instead of just telling her to stop. There are times a discussion is necessary, but a fight is never a good choice. I always teach at my clinics that it takes two animals to fight. As trainer Peter Campbell says, “A horse cannot go through something bad and come out good. Until next time, ride smarter, not harder. Email your questions to cal@ calmiddleton.com.

Profile

American Hat Company-100 Years Old & Growing Stronger By Chris Kelly, Editor For a century American Hat Company has demonstrated that it is as tough, competitive and focused as the cowboys and cowgirls who wear their hats. There have been times when the Company suffered loss and even injury, but again like the competitors in a rodeo arena, they picked themselves up, set their hats straight and looked forward to the next event. American Hat Company was founded by Sam Silver, a Russian immigrant, in 1915 in Houston, TX. Houston was a bustling, thriving community at the time, with a new canal that allowed ships into the Port of Houston. Silver saw opportunity. He opened his storefront on Main Street, specializing in inexpensive felt hats that were just what the market wanted at the time. They were cattle driving cowboys, new ranch owners and others who needed a hat that would keep the sun and rain off their heads. The company continued through three generations of Silvers, with Sam’s two sons taking over when Silver died, running it for 40 years. They moved to Louisiana Street and then Richmond. Grandson Gary Cohen took over that operation, which became The Hat Store. One of the notable achievements of American Hat Company was the development of a water-resistant straw hat in the 50’s, finished with a petroleum lacquer that repels rain. The specific formula still remains a company secret. The company also developed the concept of making hats with “open crowns” and flat brims, essentially unfinished hats that could be shaped to fit a person’s preference and face shape. While Gary continued on his

foreclosure. Word traveled fast and Keith Maddox was at the bank ready to buy the company–for less than the $10 million he had offered in 1995. The first thing he did was round up all the employees and bring them back. That was the easy part. Maddox had much bigger ideas on his mind. “Keith saw a void in the hat market. He saw need for a quality hat,” Mundee says, “and he decided American Hat Company could fill it.” But first he moved the company from Conroe to Bowie, TX, about 300 miles northwest. “One of the problems with the Conroe location was humidity,” Mundee points out. “It was difficult to get the hats to dry and be the quality that he was seeking in that environment. It was really American Hat's special formula for hot in the area where all the making straw hats water-resistant has equipment was. Hats had to caused them to be in demand since the be dried in a separate room. hats first appeared in the 1950s. own with The Hat Store, Bill and Billie George bought American Hat Company in 1984 and continued the company’s lines and traditions into the 90’s. Keith Mundee, now president of American Hat, describes that era as the “hey days” for cowboy hats, or more specifically, cowgirl hats. “Gals bought hats to match their jeans or their boots or both,” Mundee

The Job of a Lifetime

World Champion Roper Tuf Cooper has partnered with American Hat to produce a line of hats. Maddox’ timing was excellent. A new generation of cowboys was buying hats for rodeo and other arena competition, and they wanted better hats. Cowboys like roper Tuf Cooper, five-time NFR finalist and three-time World Champion, has partnered with American Hats to produce a line of Tuf Cooper hats. Others who choose to wear American include bullrider JW Harris, barrel racers Christy Loflin and Mary Walker, and bullfighters Chuck Swisher and Cody Webster. Mundee points out that the American straw hat with its water resistant finish is also the hat of choice for high school rodeo competitors. “It’s considered the ‘cutting edge’ of straw hats,” he says. While Maddox’ vision for American Hat was a much higher quality product and a new image, one thing it didn’t include was the introduction of high tech equipment or computerized assembly lines. “This is still a labor intensive business,” Mundee says. “We’re using equipment that is 100 years old.” With Maddox as the new owner, things were looking up until tragedy struck the company again in 2005 when a nearby grass fire poured

At the age of 12 Andre Trevino was walking past American Hat factory when he found a bank bag on the ground. While he certainly could have used the wad of cash it contained, he took it into the front office and turned it in. He was offered a reward for his honesty, but he said he’d rather have a job. Every day after school he would show up to sweep floors and do odd jobs around the factory, until he graduated and became a full time employee. And he has been a full time employee ever since, learning

all the steps involved in making a hat. At 57 Trevino is the factory manager, though he still likes to hand finish the 1000X hats. When the company relocated to Bowie, Trevino remained in the Houston area with his family. Not wanting to give up either of the things he loves most, he commutes nearly five hours to Bowie on Sundays, returning to Houston every Friday evening. “He’s the first one in every morning and the last to leave every night,” says company president Keith Mundee.

Hat making at American Hat is still a labor intensive process with much of the work done by hand. smoke and soot into the factory. The entire inventory, raw materials and finished hats valued at $13.5 million, was ruined. It took six months for the company to get any raw materials and several years before production was back to the level it had been. During that time of course they were not shipping as many hats or generating as much revenue. But Maddox persevered. “He did everything he could to keep the company afloat until they could start the manufacturing up again,” Mundee says. And as the company celebrates

its 100th anniversary, all that effort has paid off, with 30 percent growth every year for the past three years. At the 2014 NFR sales were up 48 percent over the previous year. To mark the occasion American Hat is producing a special 100X hat that is pure belly beaver, in three colors. It comes with a Jackie Read buckle set. Only 300 will be made, each numbered. “While growth is certainly the company goal,” Mundee notes, “ decisions for the future are based on the company’s mantra: ‘Bigger is not better. Better is better.’ “

Will Rogers Memorial Center Ft. Worth's Main Attraction for Horse People Worldwide Will Rogers liked horse shows. In fact there wasn’t much about horses Rogers didn’t like. So he would probably be pleased to find today that the huge equestrian complex in Fort Worth named after him is thriving. The Will Rogers Memorial Center, started in 1936 as a multifunctional facility, sprawls across 120 acres in the heart of the Ft. Worth Cultural District and

Will Rogers Memorial Center covers 120 acres in the heart of the Ft. Worth Cultural District. attracts 2 million visitors a year not only to horse shows, but to concerts, community events and more. The calendar is packed with horse events, starting of course with the 23-day extravaganza Ft. Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, running from the middle of this month through Feb. 7. In 2014 the facility hosted shows

and events including the NRCHA Celebration of Champions, Paint and Appaloosa World Shows, Extreme Mustang Makeover, RSNC Ranch Sorting World Series and the NCHA World Championship Futurity, just to name a few. The center opened in 1936 with its distinctive 200ft. Pioneer Tower, coliseum and 2,856-seat auditorium, all designed in an art deco architectural style. The coliseum featured an innovative structural design with an arched dome and no interior view-obstructing columns. Along its roof line are colorful tiles depicting Ft. Worth history. While the center has featured big headliners from Benny Goodman to the Vienna Boys Choir to the Rolling Stones, not until 1987 when the $16 million Will Rogers Equestrian Center opened did it attract major equestrian events. “A bond issue was passed by the city to add more arenas, horse stalls and other equestrian amenities,” says Kevin Kemp, assistant facilities and public events director. “Over the years millions and millions of dollars have been spent to create a world class equestrian center. “Because we’re in the middle of the Cultural District, all of the additions to the Center have been built in brick and stone, maintaining the look and style of the original facility,” adds Kemp. Today the equestrian facility offers three arenas, a covered outdoor exercise arenas, 2500 horse stalls, meeting rooms, exhibit halls, and an underground tunnel system that connects all the buildings to move people, horses and cattle between arenas. The expansion paid off, attracting major horse

shows with over 100,000 horses participating in events since 1987. “Despite all the improvements, the departure of a major show to another city in 2006 was an eye-opener,” Kemp says. “We needed to update and expand.” Some of those additions and improvements have included a new RV area accommodating 150 trailers, a $2 million upgrade of the portable stalls with Priefert panels, a new canopy over a waiting/preparation area behind one of the show arenas, and a new multi-purpose pavilion that serves also as a covered exercise arena. After the Stock Show is over, plans include renovation of one of the cattle barns and the addition of another promenade from the parking area. But that’s only the start. A new $450 million multipurpose arena is in the works, partially funded by a recent voter approval of a tax on stalls, parking and tickets. The new building will offer 9,000-14,000 seats, depending on the type of event. The tax will pay for half of the cost while a nonprofit organization, Event Facilities Ft. Worth that has raised funds for many of the other improvements at Will Rogers, will cover the other half. Dates have not been set for construction, but it is expected the new facility will open in five years.

Over 100,000 horses have participated in a wide variety of equestrian events at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center since 1987.

Ft. Worth Stock Show & Rodeo Brings Its own History to Will Rogers A recent addition is a multipurpose covered exercise arena.

Construction of the original Will Rogers Memorial Center shows the Pioneer Tower (right) and domed roof of the Coliseum in the background.

The Ft. Worth Stock Show, first held in 1896, has been a permanent tenant of the Will Rogers Memorial Center since 1946. “It’s an ongoing partnership,” Kemp notes. At 23 days, it is the biggest event held in the Center. The rodeo aspect of the Stock Show wasn’t introduced until 1918 when the first “indoor cowboy riding contest,” was held. A member of the commitee planning the first event suggested calling it a rodeo, using the Spanish pronunciation, “roh-day-oh.” After seeing the word written, the committee chose to pronounce it “roh-dee-oh”. That first event featured 12 performances, two a day for six days. Contests included ladies bronc riding, junior steer riding, men’s steer riding, men’s bucking bronco, and a wild horse race, with a total of $3,000 in prize money. An estimated 23,000 people attended. Last year the Ft. Worth Stock Show & Rodeo brought in 29,000 entries from 43 states and attracted over 1 million patrons, topping the 1 million mark for the third time in three consecutive years.

Working Lines By Larry Thornton Have you ever heard the old saying, “One thing leads to another?” Well that is a common occurrence for those who deal with quarter horses– they buy one horse and that horse is so good they want more just like it. They go looking for close relatives hoping to repeat their success. That is how Frenchmans Guy has become a leading sire in our industry today. It's the story of how one good horse can lead to more good horses and, in the case of Frenchmans Guy, to a whole lot of good horses! Frenchmans Guy is an all time leading sire whose foals have earned in excess of $8 million in the arena in a variety of events including barrel racing, pole bending, tie down roping, heading, heeling and steer wrestling. Equi-Stat lists him as the number two all-time leading sire of barrel racing money winners. His foals have earned $510,705.24 in the Barrel Futurities of America. In the AQHA Frenchmans Guy has sired, to date, foals that have earned 1,494.5 AQHA points with 42 ROM, four Superior performers and three Reserve World Champions with one in heading and two in pole bending. He is also the sire of two World Champions, one in the International Buckskin Horse Association and one in the Palomino Horse Breeders Association. Both in barrel racing. The story of how Frenchmans Guy became a leading sire begins with Bill and Debbie Myers of St. Onges, SD, buying a horse named Lord Alamitos. “When Debbie and I got married we were horse trainers,” recalls Bill Myers. “We started out at the track and then when we weren’t at the track we trained performance horses. We were training for the public and we trained all kinds of horses including racehorses and we broke a lot of performance horses. I rodeoed

and Debbie rodeoed. So we were interested in good performance horses as well as racehorses. “What got us interested in raising horses is that we looked at a lot of the horses in the race and performance horse world. We studied the horses that were winners and that gave us the idea of the kind of horses that we wanted. So it all evolved through our training business to find the kind of horse we wanted to

Page 50

raise,” he says. “The first horse we got that drove us to the horses we have today was Lord Alamitos. He was a half brother to Frenchmans Guy. He was out of the mother of Frenchmans Guy. We raced him when he was a two year old. “Lord Alamitos was just a great horse and we liked him so much we would go back and buy the colts out of his dam, Frenchmans Lady, every

year,” Bill continues. “And pretty much all of those colts out of that mare were exceptional, not just good but exceptional. We cut on them, we roped on them and we ran barrels on them. They were just great in all those areas and they excelled in barrel racing. So that one horse was the start of us raising horses.” Myers explains how fate stepped in to bring the breeding program, as we know it today, to fruition. “Frenchmans Guy was the last colt we got out of that mare. He was in his stall and got his eye poked when he was young. He lost his eye and we didn’t think he would sell very well. We had quite a bit of money invested in him so we broke him and found he was an amazing horse even with one eye. He is now the backbone of our business. He has done amazing things for us and our family.” Myers notes that the foals out of Frenchmans Lady could do it all, but there are no AQHA records to show that. “The reason for that is they were horses that were rodeoed on and they went to futurities and when those brothers and sisters were being shown there wasn’t as good record keeping as we have today,“ he explains. He cites one example: “One of Frenchmans Guys half sisters Lady Lord went to the NFR and she won the Dodge National Circuit Finals. She was a full sister to Lord Alamitos. She was sold to Mary Bonogofsky who won the Dodge National Finals on her. Several times they were in the top 15. Cheryl Luman rode her at the 1990 NFR.” The show record of Lord Alamitos verifies what Myers says about finding the horse he wanted to raise. Lord Alamitos earned his ROM on the track, earning an 80-speed index. He was also an NCHA money earner and the SDCHA and BHCHA Amateur Cutting Champion as well as the 1984 WRCA Snaffle Futurity Amateur Champion. He won five

Then in 1984 the first of seven foals out of Frenchmans Lady that were sired by Sun Frost came along. The sixth of these foals was Frenchmans Guy. Frenchmans Guy was bred by James and Frances Loiseau of Flandreau, SD. This is the breeding program founded on the great mare Casey’s Ladylove. This mare is the tail female descendant of such noted

horses as French Flash Hawk, or Bozo as he was known in the rodeo arena, and PC Frenchmans Hayday, or Dinero as he is called in the rodeo arena. Both of these performers were sired by Sun Frost. They are threequarter brothers to Frenchmans Guy. The pedigree of Frenchmans Guy is highly influenced by the breeding program established by the late Pat Cowan of Highmore, SD. The Cowan stallion Sun Frost was the sire of Frenchmans Guy. Sun Frost was bred by the late Stanley Johnston. Sun Frost is a $4 million sire of all around performance horses. The sire of Sun Frost is Doc’s Jack Frost. Doc’s Jack Frost was sired by Doc Bar by Lightning Bar. The dam of Doc’s Jack Frost was Chantella by War Chant. The dam of Chantella was Bardella, a full sister to Lighting Bar. Lightning Bar and Bardella were sired by Three Bars and out of Della P by Doc Horn, a thoroughbred. The dam of Sun Frost was Prissy Cline by Driftwood Ike by Driftwood. The dam of Prissy Cline was Josephine El by Super Charge by Depth Charge. The mating of Prissy Cline with Doc’s Jack Frost produced six foals, including Runnin Gun and Quick Draw. Both of these geldings became good ranch and rodeo horses for the Cowans. The success of these two geldings prompted Pat Cowan to buy Sun Frost. Sun Frost became a trained cutting horse with a win in the South Dakota Regional High School Rodeo as a two year old. Another full brother to Sun Frost was Deputy Doc, a Superior Western Pleasure Horse in the youth division earning 121 youth points. Frenchmans Lady was also bred by James and Frances Loiseau and her sire is Laughing Boy by Lightning Bar. Thus Frenchmans Guy's pedigree has a breeding pattern of 4 X 5 X 3 to the full brother and sister Lightning Bar and Bardella. The dam of Laughing Bar was Bonnie A by Joe Reed II. The

dam of Bonnie A was Adios by Red Cloud by Possum (King) a full brother to Little Joe the grandsire of King P-234. The dam of Frenchmans Lady was Casey’s Lady Love, the foundation mare of the Loiseau breeding program. Her sire was Casey’s Poco by Poco Dun and Casey’s Poco was out of Miss Casey by Tadpole by Red Dog. The dam of Miss Casey was Nedra by Red Dog. This gives Miss Casey a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Red Dog. The dam of Casey’s Ladylove was Lady Diane by McRusty by Joe Tom Mac. The dam of Lady Diane was Chigger Barnes by Joe Tom Mac. Joe Tom Mac was sired by Joe Hancock. This gives Lady Diane a 2 X 2 breeding pattern to Joe Hancock. Myers notes the power of the female side of the Frenchmans Guy pedigree and says that is a key to this stallion‘s success. “It all goes back to the Loiseau mares as they are a unique line of horses and they have been great mares. The Laughing Boy mares were just real pretty classy horses with a lot of movement and a lot of mind. So mares like his mother

“Those breeders that raised the good ones knew about the importance of the female side of a stud’s pedigree, but the stud got so much recognition..." Bill Myers and her full sisters were mares that were ahead of their time, especially in this part of the country, for being real pretty, unique moving horses that were real smart and easy to train.” “They could easily adapt to a lot

Casey's Lady Love, the mare that started it all. of different things–you could cut on them, rope on them and they made great barrel horses,” he continues. “They have a unique way of moving and neat way of thinking. They are happy, friendly and aggressive kind of horses that get along with so many people. They are horses that have a lot of class.” Myers points out some of the attributes of Laughing Boy that come through in the Frenchmans Guy foals. “Frenchmans Guy’s movement is probably one of his greatest attributes. He is just so fluid and quick footed and he knows where his feet are all the time. But yet it is not hard for him to do it and he passes that on to his colts. It is so much a part of them and you don’t have to train it into them. You don’t have to get to a certain point to train them. It is there from the first time you get on them. It’s a part of them. “Frenchmans Guy has a real pretty head and neck and that is a Laughing Boy trait. His foals are beautiful in the head and neck and real balanced on their top line. They are real pretty horses and that comes from the Laughing Boy blood.” Laughing Boy was originally from Arizona. He was running on the racetrack and was claimed by

Page 52

Stanley Johnston and Bill McNeil and brought to South Dakota. Laughing Boy was an AA rated runner, although reportedly he had beaten horses that had run AAA. Laughing Boy was purchased by Pat Cowan and his brother-in-law Tex Fulton. He was then used in the Cowan breeding program. “I think people forget about those old race bloodlines,” Myers observes. “It is not your modern stuff we are seeing right now. You go back to Three Bars, Joe Reed II and of course Lightning Bar and he is by Three Bars. There is a lot of that old race blood in the pedigree of Frenchmans Guy. And if you look at this old race blood, it is not that they can run out 400 or 440 yards, it is the horse that can run 100 to 250 yards that makes your great rodeo horse and that is what Frenchmans Guy has and puts in his colts. He has that quick speed. He isn’t going to outrun those 440 yard horses but his colts will be right there at 150 to 250 yards with those good horses that have more gears beyond that to 400 or 440 yards. “Those breeders that raised the good ones knew about the importance of the female side of a stud’s pedigree but the stud got so

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Jan/Feb 2015

much recognition and the mares didn’t and now people are finding it is the mare families that make those great studs. The good studs you see today are out of good mare families,” Myers concludes. Frenchmans Guy's pedigree with the blood of such noted horses as Ed Echols, Driftwood, Joe Hancock and even King P-234, reinforces Myers’ observations. All of these great stallions were known to have run a race or two and they represent some of what was called

Disarray demonstrates what happens when daughters of the number one sire of barrel racing money winners are brought to the court of the number two leading sire of barrel racing “short horse” racing, usually at distances of 350 yards or less. Of course, Bill and Debbie Myers believe you need a strong stallion with a strong female family, but you have to put that back on good mares. “If we wouldn’t have had those mares [that Frenchmans Guy financed] I don’t think he would have been as successful as he has been. We have spent as much money as we can afford and it has paid off ten fold.” One of those mares is Fleeting Pie, a daughter of the All American Futurity winner Pie In The Sky who is a son of Easy Jet by Jet Deck. She is out of She Two, a winner of $462,450 in race earnings. She Two was sired by Fleet Kirsch by Fleet Nasrullah. The dam of She Two was Double Flapper by Double Bid.

Double Flapper was out of Midnight Flame by Lightning Bar. So this gives the pedigrees of foals out of this mare and Frenchmans Guy a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 4 X 5 to Lightning Bar and his sister Bardella. When bred to Frenchmans Guy this mare is the dam of such money winners as Sky High Guy, Guys Pie In the Sky, Fleeting Frenchmans Girl and Guys Piece Of the Pie. The leading money winner out of this group is Sky High Guy, who has earned in excess of $130,000 in the rodeo arena and on the barrel racing futurity circuit. Disarray is another mare that has joined the broodmare band at the Myers Training Stable. Disarray is sired by Dash Ta Fame, who is a son of First Down Dash by Dash For Cash. The dam of Dash Ta Fame is Sudden Fame, a daughter of Tiny’s Gay. The dam of Sudden Fame is Bar Dearie by Lake Erie. The dam of Disarray is Rimes Bouquet by Rime

by Dash For Cash. This gives Disarray a breeding pattern of 3 X 3 to Dash For Cash. The dam of Rimes Bouquet is Real Karates by Real Thing by Easy Jet. The dam of Real Karates is Ester Bunny by Bunny Bid and she is out of Esters Little Klu. This is the female line of Ochoa, the all time leading money winner quarter running horse and winner of the All American Futurity-G1 and the All American Derby-G1. Disarray demonstrates what happens when daughters of the number one sire of barrel racing money winners are brought to the court of the number two leading sire of barrel racing money winners. The result is Guys Famous Girl who has earned over $125,000 in events like the Lance Graves Pro Classic Slot Race and the Southwestern Arena Slot Race. money winner. One of the bloodlines that is prominent in the Myers broodmare band is that of the cross of Dash For Cash with Perks. Perks was sired by Easy Jet and out of the Champion running mare Rapid Volley. Rapid Volley is by Three Bars and out of Table Tennis by Spotted Bull. Table Tennis is out of Chicado V, the dam of the great sires Triple Chick, Three Chicks and The Ole Man. This cross has produced Cash Perks, the 1986 AQHA Racing Champion Two-YearOld Filly. One of the mares carrying this blood is Serious Spender, a daughter of Cash Perks. Serious Spender is sired by Bills Ryon by Windy Ryon. Bills Ryon is out of Bright N Your Day and she is sired by All American Futurity winner Go Dick Go. Bright N Your Day is out of Shining Saint by St Bar. Shining Saint is out of Shining Note by Palleo Pete. Serious Spender is the dam of Guys Cash Perks by Frenchmans Guy. This gelding is a BFA World Champion Barrel Horse. Another mare in the Myers broodmare band is Addicted To Cash, a full sister to leading barrel sire Dash For Perks and the racing champion Cash Perks. She is the dam of I Like Guys With Cash. This horse earned over $8,500 in barrel futurity money. A standing stallion must be a horse that crosses with a lot of different bloodlines and Frenchmans Guy is such a horse. The Equi-Stat’s Magic Crosses on Frenchmans Guy shows many different bloodlines that he has crossed with. “Sure he has a few bloodlines that he crosses better with,” Myers acknowledges, “but he has sired good foals in a wide range of different bloodline mares. That is what is good about him; he crosses with a wide spectrum of mare lines.” Another example of his ability to cross with various mare lines and some interesting links between his pedigree and the mare’s pedigree is

SX Frenchmans Vanila. This mare has won over $230,000 in rodeo and barrel racing futurities. She won the Speedhorse Silver Futurity, Speedhorse Gold Futurity, the Lazy E Futurity and the Old Fort Days Futurity to name just a few. The Equi-Stat Magic Cross on Frenchmans Guy indicates that the cross has earned $195,485 on the Jet N Rocket mare named Willys Rockin. This mare is the dam of foals sired by Frenchmans Guy including French Fancy Face, Rock On Rita, Frenchmans Lana and Guys

Returning the blood is a breeding theory that calls for the blood of the stallion’s mother ...to be returned to the pedigree of the foal produced through the mares the stallion has been bred to. Magic Cross, all money earners. What makes this cross so interesting is the dam side of the pedigree of Willys Rockin. She was sired by the stallion Jet N Rocket. He was a son of Jet Charger by Jet Deck and out of Rosa Leo by Leo. The dam of Willys Rockin was Willys Lass by Laughing Boy. This gives the foals of Willys Rockin sired by Frenchmans Guy a 3 X 3 breeding pattern to Laughing Boy. This breeding pattern is also what is referred to in the race industry as “returning the blood.” Returning the blood is a breeding theory that calls for the blood of the stallion’s mother (in this case Frenchmans Lady) to be returned to the pedigree of the foal produced through the mares the stallion has

Page 58

been bred to. Thus it is linebreeding using a common ancestor of the sire’s dam and the mare her son is bred to. In this case they are returning the blood of Laughing Boy to the foals produced out of Willys Rockin and Frenchmans Guy. This is a common breeding theory found in such World Champions as the 2008 AQHA Racing World Champion Stolis Winner and the 2009 AQHA Racing World Champion Freaky. Ima Super Fly Guy is a son of Frenchmans Guy that also has an interesting pedigree. This 2008 colt has won events like the 2012 Diamonds And Dirt Classic Futurity and added the 2014 Cowboy Publishing Group Timed Event Challenge Championship in barrel racing to his resume. The dam of Ima Super Fly Guy is Streakin Six Babe, a race mare by Streakin Six by Easy Six by Easy Jet. Once again the Jet Deck sire line comes into play. The dam of Streakin Six Babe is Ambassadors Babe by a thoroughbred named First Ambassador. The dam of Ambassador Babe is Lil Tomboy Babe. She is sired by Fleet Nasruallah. Her dam is Bar On Deck by Top Deck. Bar On Deck is out of Bardella Too. Bardella Too is sired by War Chant and out of Bardella, the full sister to Lightning Bar. This makes Bardella Too a full sister to Chantella the dam of Doc’s Jack Frost. This gives Ima Super Fly Guy a breeding pattern of 5 X 6 X 5 X 6 to the full brother and sister Lightning Bar and Bardella. Expanding on his comments about mares bred to Frenchmans Guy, Myers adds, “When we first started, a lot of people thought you had to breed Frenchmans Guy to a race bloodline mare to have a fast horse. But he has proven that wrong in the last few years. He has been bred to a lot of mares that didn’t have up close speed at all and now we are seeing really fast horses out of mare lines that don’t have that close up speed.”

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • Jan/Feb 2015

As an example, Myers cites a filly named Bring It On Guys, who in 2013 earned about $40,000. Her dam is Full A Irish Whiskey, a daughter of Paddys Irish Whiskey, a son of the AQHA Hall of Fame cutting horse Peppy San Badger who was out of the NCHA Hall of Fame mare Doc’s Starlight, by Doc Bar and out of Tasa Tivio by Poco Tivio by Poco Bueno. The dam of Full A Irish Whiskey is Full Of Dynamite by Doc O Dynomite by Doc Olena. Doc O’Lena was a son of Doc Bar and the NCHA Hall of Fame mare Poco Lena, a full sister to Poco Tivio. The dam of Full Of Dynamite is Full Of Success, a thoroughbred mare by Success Flight. This gives a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 4 X 5 X 6 X 7 to Lightning Bar and his full sister Bardella. As an added note a young stallion standing beside his sire at Myers Training Stable is A Smooth Guy. This good young son of Frenchmans Guy is out of the champion barrel producer Docs Movida by Dry Doc who is a full brother to Doc O’Lena. His second dam is a daughter of Jet Smooth by Jet Deck and the great mare Lena’s Bar. A Smooth Guy is the sire of a multiple futurity finalist in 2013 named Ima Smooth Kidder. A Smooth Guy has a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 4 X 4 to Lightning Bar and his full sister Bardella. Lightning Bar and Bardella were bred in Arizona by Art Pollard. As the story goes, Pollard got Della P, the dam of these two from his friend and mentor Dink Parker. Parker had refused to breed Della P to Three Bars because he didn’t like the horse. But he told Pollard that if he sold Della P to him, he could breed her to Three Bars. Bardella was born in 1950 and she went to the racetrack to become the 1952 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Lightning Bar was foaled the next year and he started his race career but it was cut short by an injury at Pomona Race

Track in California in a race against Super Charge. Before the injury, Lightning Bar set a world record for two year olds, going 330 yards in 17.2 seconds. He reportedly set or equaled two other track records. The appearance of a full brother and sister in a pedigree, as with Lightning Bar and Bardella, is called a collateral linebreeding. Full brothers and sisters and threequarters brothers and sisters appearing in a pedigree are collateral relatives. This allows the breeder to incorporate the genes of the close siblings to get a wider variety of genes into the foal coming from the common ancestors. In this case that was Three Bars and Della P. Frenchmans Guy is represented in the 2014 National Finals Rodeo with horses like Guys Six Pack To Go with Christine Laughlin in barrel racing and with French Wonder with

Bray Armes in the saddle. Both of these performers show how Frenchmans Guy has been successful on a variety of bloodlines. Guys Six Pack To Go is out of Scatter The Stars by Packin Sixes by Streakin Six. The dam of Scatter The Stars is Getting Down On A High by On A High by Dash For Cash. The third dam of Guys Six Pack To Go is Mary Mito. Mary Mito is the dam of the successful barrel horse sire Judge Cash. Judge Cash is the sire of Judge Buy Cash the 2010 AQHA/PRCA Barrel Racing Horse of the Year. French Wonder, a winner of over $500,000 in bulldogging, is out of Cheyanns Wonder by Otoes Wonder by Otoe. The dam of Cheyanns Wonder is Black Chick Sugar by Sugar Bar Flit. Sugar Bar Flit and Otoe are full brothers in blood. They are sired by Sugar Bars and out of Continued on page 110

Mares with More

Debnam Mares: Behind Every Successful Stud Are Some Truly Great Mares By Larry Thornton The last installment of The Working Lines in the November/ December issue of Working Horse Magazine covered the story of Rita and Deb Debnam’s stallion Torino, a great young stallion that left us before his time. This installment of Mares With More will tell the rest of the story and the role the Debnam mares played in the life of Rita, Deb and their son Rod. These mares– including Alejo Lady 157, Miss Magby, Dunnys Miss Kim, Paprika Red and Frosty Money–had great success with Torino allowing them to join our Mares With More club. Deb and Rita entered the quarter horse business with Rita and their son Rod becoming successful in the show ring. The success in the arena was only a part of the story; their legacy in this business was as breeders. When they started putting their breeding program together and building a broodmare band, one of the first was Alejo Lady157 or, as Rita calls her, Lady. Alejo Lady 157 Alejo Lady 157 was foaled in 1965 on the Waggoner Ranch in Vernon, TX. She was purchased as a two year old by Deb and Rita. Rita recalls the mare and how they came to own her: “Lady was special. She put me on the map. Deb and our good friend Stan Steyskal went to the Waggoner Ranch Sale. It was their first production sale. They went to look at some broodmares. When they got down there they found the horses were going too high. “They had seen Lady from a distance before they brought her in

Golden Cherokee, an AQHA Champion, was the son of Torino and Alejo Lady 157. the ring,” Rita continues. “She wasn’t even halter broke. They had to rope her to bring her in the sale ring and she was a two year old. They paid a pretty fair price for her. “They put her in the trailer and didn’t stop to unload her. Stan’s barn was full at the time and he said this would be a good time to take her home and gentle her. She was wild as all get out. She wasn’t a mean horse but she knocked Deb down one time. She was always a skittish horse.” “Stan and I were the only ones that rode her,” Rita says. “He was anxious to get her and a year later she was an AQHA Champion. She was shown at halter and then she would come back and win the pleasure. She won the pleasure futurity at the Missouri State Fair with Stan riding her. It was a big deal. They had a Calcutta and I bought her. I won the Calcutta and Stan won the pleasure.” Rita points out that in the

beginning the new team was on the road but they weren’t winning. “When I first took her home from Stan’s and I started showing her, I wasn’t getting along with her,” Rita explains. “I would place third or fourth, but I knew I had a mare that could win them all. Stan said bring her down here and you come and ride that mare about three or four times a week and he would teach me how to ride that horse. I found out she was so light and I wasn’t experienced enough to know I had something under me that the slightest shift in the saddle would change her leads. To ask her for a particular lead was a simple squeeze with one knee. That was the way Stan’s horses were. After I did that we started winning. “One of the biggest thrills for me in the horse business was winning the Nebraska State Fair on her as a three year old in the junior western pleasure,” Rita recalls. “It was a huge

class. They had like three go-rounds with 70 to 80 horses. “Lady was real skittish and she was a spooky horse. When I was on her everything was fine. She was ok that night in the arena and everything was fine, but I would have to go out of the arena and she would start shaking all over again from all the noise of the fair. Well the judge got down to about 12 horses and I was the only female and the rest were trainers. He couldn’t tie the class so he decided to go down the line. I lined up in the center like I always tried to do. “He started at the end and came down the line. He had the horses back up close to the rail and do a 360 and come back up in the line. Lady was so tired from going in and out and getting so nervous and I had never done a 360 on her. So I backed her up did a 360 and it seemed like her feet never touched the ground and she trotted back to the line and the arena went crazy. The people were on there feet. And nobody did it as she did. So I won the class.” Winning the Nebraska State Fair

and the American Royal were two highlights for Rita, both on Lady. The American Royal win was special when Tommy Minion was the first to come up and say congratulations Rita. “That was a great win,” she notes.

When Lady went to the broodmare band she did her part to put Torino on the road to success as a sire. “Lady was just an awesome mare and she was all business. I could put her in a stall at the American Royal or wherever and put my saddle and hang my show clothes in with her and she would not touch them. I could put my dog in there and she was fine with it. She was like no other horse I had ever seen. We were a team.” Rita, Stan and Lady would

serve up an AQHA Championship with a superior in western pleasure. They earned an ROM with 84.5 performance points and 32 halter points. She earned one Grand Championship and two Reserve Grand Championships in halter. When Lady went to the broodmare band she did her part to put Torino on the road to success as a sire. She would produce only seven foals with six of them sired by Torino and three of those being performers. The performers included Alejo Torino, an ROM performer with 10 performance points and 26 halter points, and Mia Torino, who earned one halter and six performance points. The leading point earner out of Lady was Golden Cherokee, an AQHA Champion with 15 halter and 112 performance points earning a performance ROM. He was an AQHA World Show finalist in the 1982 in Senior Heading. An unshown daughter of Torino and Lady was Fair Lady Torino. She produced Gold N Grand by One Hundred Grand, a gelding who was a PHBA World Champion Halter Horse. He earned 157 halter points and 387 performance points in the PHBA. He earned nine AQHA halter, four AQHA performance points, two AQHA youth halter and two AQHA youth performance points. According to Lady’s pedigree she was sired by a King Ranchbred stallion named El Alejos who was sired by Hired Hand’s Cardinal by Hired Hand by Old Sorrel. The dam of Hired Hand’s Cardinal was Listona Azule by Peppy P-212. The dam of El Alejos was Chata De Aleja by Rey Del Rancho. Her dam was Nube by Macanudo. The dam of Lady was Lady Chock 157 by L H Chock by King P-234. The dam of Lady Chock 157 was Pretty Lady 157 by Pretty Boy by Dodger. The dam of Pretty Lady 157 was a Waggoner mare and her pedigree is unknown. This gives the

foals of Torino and Alejos Lady 157 a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 5X 4 to King P-234. Miss Magby Not all of the mares that Deb and Rita bought were or became show mares. Miss Magby was one that wasn’t shown. She was bred by C. O. Welch of Clarksville, TX, and owned by Hollis E. Magby of Stringtown, OK, when the Debnams bought her. “We bought her at a sale in Ada, Oklahoma,” Rita says. “I don’t remember why we were there but Deb liked sales. There was a man from Oklahoma that had a stallion in the sale and a mare that was a threein-one package. I think Deb paid $3,000 for the stallion, mare and her foal. That stallion had been on the track but he was pretty hot. He was a nice looking horse but we eventually sold him. That is where Miss Magby came from. She crossed really well with Torino.” The stallion they bought was Bar Bandit Jr, a son of Miss Magby, by a stallion named Bar Bandit by Three Bars. Bar Bandit Jr was an AQHA

Miss Magby produced 16 foals with ten performers with seven point earners. She was the dam of eight foals by Torino and five of them were point earners. The first performer out of Miss Magby and bred by Rita and Deb was Aledo Rio by Ledo Bar the sire of Torino. Aledo Rio was shown in youth in 1971 by Rod Debnam. They had one win in one show. Later in 1971 and 1972 she was shown by Bill Enos and they earned youth points in halter, showmanship and reining–28 youth halter points and 19 youth performance points. They also earned the AQHA Youth World Champion Aged Mare title in 1972. In 1973 she was shown in youth by Wendy Stephens. They added nine more youth halter points to the record. Aledo Rio was a top show mare that was Superior in open halter, earning 133 halter points and 15 open performance points to go with the 38 youth halter points and the 19 youth performance points. The first foal sired by Torino and

out of Miss Magby was Tarina. She was shown in youth by Rod Debnam. They earned 67 AQHA youth performance points in events like western pleasure and showmanship with 45 of these points coming in western pleasure. The leading point earner sired by Torino and out of Miss Magby was Cassius Torino. This stallion was an AQHA Champion with Superiors in halter and western pleasure. He earned 52 open halter points and 58 open performance points with a performance ROM. The other performers out of Miss Magby and sired by Torino include Kissimmee Torino with an open ROM earning 27 open points and 10 youth performance points; Maria Torino with six open performance points, and Torino Truly, a youth ROM earner with 31 youth points. She also had seven AQHA amateur performance points. The point earning mare Kissimmee Torino was the dam of Swift Kiss by Swift Solo. Swift Kiss was a Superior western pleasure

horse with 52 open performance points. Maria Torino was a point earner and dam of Rights N Privileges by Impressive. This stallion was Superior in halter with 62.5 halter points. He was ROM in open halter and amateur halter. He had 27.5 AQHA amateur points. The stallion Bar Bandit Jr, the son of Miss Magby, sired a mare named Bandit’s Sock Hop, bred by Rita and Deb. She was out of Royal Reed by General Joe. This mare produced Torino’s No Sok Dol by Torino. Torino’s No Sok Dol was the dam of seven AQHA point earners, including: Alotta Scotch, AQHA Champion with 40 AQHA points; Bar Time Too, an AQHA Performance Champion with Superiors in open and amateur trail, open western riding and open and amateur western pleasure; Scotch Bar Dol, ROM in the open and amateur with 181 points with a Superior in Showmanship, and Ima Times Too with a youth superior in halter earning a total of 304.5 points in the youth, open and novice halter and performance divisions. All of these horses were sired by Scotch Bar Time. The last point earner was His Soks Have Flash by Flashy Zipper who earned 16 AQHA open and amateur performance points with an ROM in the open. The sire of Miss Magby was Stamper’s Pete who was sired by Half Pint by Herren’s Hardtack. Half Pint was out of Leal by Guinea Pig. The dam of Stamper’s Pete was Gate’s Rainy Norfleet by Norfleet. The dam of Miss Magby was Gay Bailey 3, an appendix bred mare sired by the thoroughbred Gay Gent by Red Bug. The AQHA record of Miss Magby shows that Gay Bailey 3 is out of Miss Bailey 10 by Joe Bailey’s King. Joe Bailey’s King was sired by Joe Bailey P-4. His dam was a gray mare bred on the Four Sixes Ranch, sired by Tom (Scooter). The dam of Miss Bailey 10 was Miss Seal 10 by Brown Seal by Golden Chief. Miss Bailey 10 was bred by the

Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company. This is our second broodmare with her roots in two famous Texas Ranches, the Four Sixes and the Pitchfork Land and Cattle Company. Dunny’s Miss Kim Dunny’s Miss Kim, bred by Bruce and Sylvia Gocken of Cedar Bluff, NE, was another show mare that became a broodmare for Rita and Deb. “Oh, Dunny’s Miss Kim,“ exclaims Rita when hearing the mare’s name. “A girl from the Des Moines, IA, area had Kim. She

dissolve the partnership. I thought she would make a great youth mare. We talked it over with Rod to see if he would like her and he did, so we bought her. “Our competition in the bidding was some good friends from Olathe, KS. They had a son Rod’s age and when they saw who they were bidding against, they quit and we got her. Rod was playing football outside with some friend and after she sold he came in under the bleachers and pulls on his dad’s leg and asked who bought Kim. Deb said ask your mom

A real pretty mare, a pretty colored mare and she was winning everything in junior western pleasure in Iowa and Nebraska but mostly in Iowa.” “I don’t know if people will remember the Western Trails Ranch in Omaha,” Rita says. (Western Trails Ranch was owned by L. R. Pettigrew and Wayne Jordan worked for them. They owned the AQHA Supreme Champion Beatle Win.) “They had a big sale and that girl consigned Kim to the sale. Kim was a partnership mare and they put her in the sale to

and I said, ‘Well your dad bought that mare for you.’ He just squealed and ran out the door with his friends. “That mare had so much personality. The kids would save food from the restaurants to feed that mare. She loved hot rolls, whatever they brought her. She would knock over my coffee in the tack box in the morning and lick it up. She was just a pet. Rod would get her ready and he used one of those clip on ties. He would clip it on her halter and when it was time to show he would put it on and go show.” Dunny’s Miss Kim retired with an open AQHA Championship. Continued on page 74

She was Superior in open western pleasure and ROM in performance. She earned 33 halter points, 52 performance points, 11 youth halter points and 38 youth performance points. Rod earned the youth points on this mare. Dunny’s Miss Kim was the dam of five foals sired by Torino and they are all point earners. Her first foal was Torino’s Kim an AQHA Champion with 24 open halter points, 85 open performance points, five youth halter points and

49 youth performance points. Her next Torino foal was Torino’s Alibi, who earned six open halter and three open performance points. She was followed by Oh Oh Torino, who earned an open performance ROM with 42 open points. She earned two youth performance points. The next Torino foal was Torino Star Bar. This gelding is ROM in the open, amateur and youth divisions. He earned 22 open performance points, 16 amateur performance points and 35 youth performance points. The last Torino foal was Torino Brougham with 23 halter points. Dunny’s Miss Kim was sired by Magnolia Dunny, the 1961 AQHA Honor Roll Reining Horse. His sire

was Sunup H by King P-234. Sunup H was a full brother to the great Beaver Creek. The dam of Magnolia Dunny was Paula Waggoner by Pretty Boy. The dam of Dunny’s Miss Kim is Kim Pat Star by Pat Star Jr. The dam of Kim Pat Star is Bay Mayme by Little Joe Kimble by Sonny Kimble. Sonny Kimble is a threequarter brother to King P-234. The dam of Bay Mayme is Mayme H by King P-234. When we add the blood of King P-234 in his sires pedigree the result is a breeding pattern of 5 X 5 X 4 X 5 to King P-234 and a breeding pattern of 5 X 5X 4 X 5 X 5 to the three-quarter brothers King P-234 and Sonny Kimble. Dunny’s Miss Kim is our second mare whose foals by Torino are linebred to King P-234. She also has some Waggoner Ranch breeding in her pedigree. Paprika Red As mentioned in the story about Torino, Rita was a horse lover from childhood. Her first horse was Paprika Red, the mare they bought at the Joe Lindholm sale, the first sale they went to. Paprika Red was bred by Hans J. Nielson of Defiance, IA. “As I remember her she was a little rangy and bay,” Rita recalls. “She was only green broke when we got her and Deb turned her over to me. I rode her in parades, as did Rod when Deb rode with his group. I didn’t much like that. Riding on concrete and brick streets wasn’t where I wanted to ride. I like the farms around our Omaha place.” Paprika Red produced her first foal in 1968 for Rita and Deb. That foal was Tyree’s Honey by Harlan‘s Tyree. She is an AQHA Champion in both the youth and open divisions. The second Paprika foal was Booker Dee by Jackie Bee. This horse earned eight halter points. Duane Walker owned Jackie Bee. The first of four foals Paprika Red produced by Torino was Dreamster. This gelding was a Youth

Page 74

AQHA Champion with ROM’s in the open and youth divisions. He earned two open halter points, 34 open performance points, 15 youth halter points and 123 youth performance points. The next Torino foal was Dun Foolin who was shown only as a yearling winning her halter class. The next performer was Just A Doll. This mare earned 11 open performance points, three youth halter points and 66 youth performance points. Just A Doll went on to be a successful broodmare. She is the dam of four AQHA point earners. Her leading point earner was Just Right Too by Winchester. This mare earned superiors in amateur and open western pleasure. The pedigree of Paprika Red shows she was sired by Lena’s Red by Buck Hawthorn by Sport. The dam of Lena’s Red was Flying X Lena by Mr. Brown by Sport. This gives Lena’s Red a breeding pattern of 2 X 3 to Sport. Sport was sired by Sandy, a three-quarters brother to King P-234, resulting in a breeding to King P-234 and his three-quarters brother Zandy. This is similar to the breeding of Alejos Lady 157 and Dunny’s Miss Kim. The dam of Paprika Red was Sybil who was out of Red Bird’s Chunk. Red Bird’s Chunk was sired by Salty Chubby by Chubby. The broodmare sire of Torino was Todo Bueno who was out of Rio Rita, a daughter of Chubby. This gives the foals of Torino and Paprika Red a 5 X 5 breeding pattern to Chubby. Frosty Money Frosty Money was a successful show mare when Rita and Deb bought her. She was an AQHA Champion, Superior Halter horse with her ROM. She was bred by H. Irvin Christansen of Durham, KS. “We bought her from Duane Walker in Kansas. She was a great show mare but we bought her strictly as a broodmare and we paid a lot of

money. I thought Deb was out of his mind. We had become good friends with the Walkers,” Rita notes. While Rita and Deb bought her as a broodmare, they didn‘t send her directly to the broodmare band. Rita explains, “To have that mare and not show her I thought was a crime. So I asked Deb if I could show her a few times and I did. She was so sweet and so beautiful and so powerful,” Rita says. “She had the prettiest hair coat of any roan mare you ever saw. She just didn’t have any flaws in that hair. Sometimes you have scars or black spots but she was smooth as silk. The Walkers had really taken good care of her. She was just the sweetest lady. She would just get in your pocket.” When it came time to breed Frosty Money the Debnams shopped around. “We went down to Oklahoma to look at a couple of studs that I had read about. Deb had subscribed to the AQHA stud books and I was really getting into it. I was looking at a lot of studs. I had seen a picture of Jackstraw Jr. So we went down to look at him and he was beautiful and we bred her to him.” The foal from that mating was very special to Rita. “That foal was Straw Money and from the day she was born I had another one in my pocket. She was just mine. I could walk in the barn and she would knicker. It was like having a dog. I won some futurities with her and I think she was the best we ever raised. Then Dave Page called and we priced her and they bought her. It was hard for me, but we had to let her go.” Straw Money became a good show mare earning 23 halter and 10 performance points, earning an open ROM. She was the first of only six foals produced by Frosty Money, all point earners. The Continental was the second foal of Frosty Money and her first by Torino. The Continental became an AQHA Champion with 34 halter

The Continental would go a long way as a sire promoting the Torino influence on the quarter horse. His foals would earn 3,958 AQHA points with six AQHA Champions, 39 ROM and 18 Superiors and three World Champions. His foals include the great halter gelding Continental Can, a three time AQHA World Champion. The Continental is the sire of Continental Fly, an NRCHA money earner and sire of such noted horses as Figure Four 307, Figure Four 323 and Four Roan Fly. Four Roan Fly is a stallion that has been used on the Four Sixes Ranch of Guthrie, TX. He was a successful show horse earning

43 AQHA points in calf roping, heeling, heading and halter. He is the sire of Roan Mama, an ARHA World Champion Sorting Horse and an ARHA World Champion Aged Mare. The next foal out of Frosty Money was the mare Tiffany Torino. This mare earned 45 open halter points to go with her 12 youth halter and five youth performance points. She was the dam of only one performer in Tiffany’s Advantage by Advantage. This mare earned five AQHA halter points. Robert Redford was the 1974 foal of Torino and out of Frosty Money. fíÛë=qáãÉ=qç=bëí~ÄäáëÜ=^=iÉÖ~Åó Do you have money in the bank? Investments? A solid income stream? Good. Now it’s time to put it to work. Establish a legacy. Investment accounts don’t do any good unless they’re put to use. I’ve never seen a kid light up with anticipation when discussing a 401(K) and the tax code, but I’ve seen it hundreds of times when they’re about to go on a fishing trip. What will be your family legacy? I have some ideas—a cabin in the woods, a trophy hunting ranch, a ski condo, a hay farm, a hobby farm, a horse ranch. That’s the kind of properties we sell. Everyone has a budget, and we’ve sold hunting properties for as little as $45,000 and as much as $13 million. Hobby farms for $250K, hay farms for $1,750,000—there’s a price range for practically everybody. Let’s face it, not many people HAVE to come to western Colorado because they got a great new job. However, millions of people WANT to come to Colorado because it’s their dream. How many places can you get up in the morning and ponder whether to go fly-fishing, blue grouse hunting, horseback riding, or just stay in the garden and gather the bounty? In a few short months, the choices will be Nordic skiing, snowmobiling, downhill skiing, or even golf on the same day! We live in a very special place, and it’s all about families and memories. When it’s time to glide on in for the final approach, what will your family remember—the line items on your financial statement, or the family outings on your dream property? I’m a former outfitter and hunting guide and fly-fishing guide. I’m a rancher and a horseman, a hay farmer and expert in water rights and irrigation systems. My specialty is helping people to live their dreams, and if you want top-quality representation, I’m here to help.

Chiropractic Can Aid Painful Withers By Patricia Holl Back pain in a horse is something every horse owner has had to deal with at one time or another. One of the most common causes of pain and behavioral changes in the horse is pain in the withers. The withers in the horse are formed by the dorsal spinous processes of T3 through T8, and are longer here than in any other area of the horse’s spine. Because of their length, the withers are used as the measuring point for a horse’s height. The withers are a very important area in the horse’s spine, as they are the attachment site for the muscles that support the shoulder and neck. Painful withers commonly result from poor saddle fit, poor saddle placement, as well as spinal misalignment and immobility which can occur as a result of compensatory changes in gait and posture. The movement in the withers directly affects shoulder motion, and problems here can cause muscle loss and changes in stride. When the joints in the withers become immobile or misaligned, it can lead to secondary and tertiary problems, including pain, sensitivity to touch (particularly when saddling), lameness, gait abnormalities and changes in posture. These are the symptoms easiest to detect. It takes a trained doctor to distinguish some of the more subtle changes that can occur systemically. Equine chiropractic can help manage the movement and biomechanics of the spinal vertebrae in the withers that become fixated, and restore the signaling of the nerves that exit the spinal cord on their way to the muscles and organs of the body. Equine chiropractors are licensed veterinarians and chiropractors who have undergone

additional education from an accredited animal chiropractic school. These professionals then go on to successfully complete certifying exams from either the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) or the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association (IVCA). Animal chiropractors use their hands to identify areas of restriction and apply a precise thrust in specific vectors on the immobile joint, restoring normal motion. Maintaining proper joint motion and alignment permits optimal function of the muscles, nerves and tissues, resulting in improved movement, flexibility, endurance and overall performance. Equine chiropractic has proven to be effective in resolving problems in the withers, though it is by no

means limited to this area. Broader benefits of equine chiropractic include improved neck and back motion, superior immune function, healthier metabolism and a vibrant nervous system, facilitating your animal’s natural ability to heal. Equine chiropractic is not meant to replace traditional veterinary care. It is an integrative method that is an effective and valuable means of restoring and maintaining strength, well-being, and will provide your horse with years of happy and healthy living. It is a more modern, comprehensive approach to your horse’s healthcare. And, by exploring and treating the root causes of your horse’s pains, injuries and illnesses, it can help ensure maximum health, top performance and good quality of life.

Dr. Holl works on a horse to relieve pain at the withers. She is a licensed chiropractor living in Montana, and is the staff chiropractor at the Yellowstone Naturopathic Clinic in Billings, MT.

Spiritual Food From God's Feed Truck This is the Stallion edition of Working Horse Magazine and I'm sure that it will be one of the most popular issues of the year. Why? Because of the characteristics that stallions offer to us. These majestic animals possess attributes that everyone admires. Strength, style, beauty, heart, and drive are a few that come to mind. The good ones offer potential greatness to the offspring that will come to the person who was wise enough to offer their best mares to blend their superior genetics together. This mating, in the mind of the mare owner, just might produce the next famous horse. Nobody ever would think of going through the expense and headache of raising a colt if average was the goal, would they? Heavens no! So the point I'm getting too is this. Expectation is the mental ingredient of hope. The hope of a bright future is embodied in the stallion and everything associated with him. With your heart full of hope combined with an attitude of gratitude and love for one another all things are really possible. The outside of the horse especially the stallion really is good for the inside of a man. It truly is a relationship where horse and human together are better than they could be apart, because of the uniting of their strengths. Or to put it another way, “What’s on the inside of a man shows up on the outside of his horse.”

High Seller Brings $30,000 in Marketplace at Ardmore November 1 ushered in the first brisk day of autumn, and set the tone for a fast-paced performance horse sale at Hardy Murphy Coliseum in Ardmore, OK. Attendees at the Marketplace at Ardmore didn’t have to wait long to see the high seller. Metallic Frost, Hip #4, sold for $30,000. This Metallic Cat yearling stallion out of a Playgun mare was consigned by Giuseppe Quaini and sold to Oswaldo Celis. Sale Manager Susie Reed said, “We got off to a great start with the Metallic Cat yearling, and we continued to have a good solid sale for the balance of the day. About halfway through, I thought it might be the best sale we’ve ever had, and sure enough, when we settled up at

the end of the day, we were only a few dollars shy of setting a record.” The top 10 head averaged $18,190 and the top 20 averaged $14,400. Eighty-four percent sold for an overall average of $5,726. The second highest seller and high selling mare was Hip #71. Pet Chula, a 2010 bay mare by Chula Dual and out of Pet Squirrel brought $26,500 for consignor Don Lovette and went to Nick Meagher. “We have been working really hard to attract show prospects and seasoned show horses because they are in such demand and it’s paid off. The second high seller was an NCHA winner of $40,725 and we had a good many NCHA money earners bring in excess of $10,000,” Reed continued, “We’re always

Page 106

looking for new ways to benefit the consignor to ensure our buyers will have a good set of horses to choose from, and at the spring 2015 sale we are trying something new.” The brand new deal for the March 28, 2015 sale will be a “Free Ride.” If an individual consigns six or more head, Reed is offering to sell one for free. All the consignor has to do is designate the specific horse ahead of time, and there is no catalog fee, no fresh cattle charge, or no sales commission collected for that one horse. The next Marketplace at Ardmore Sale will be held March 28, 2015. For more information, contact Susie Reed 580-276-4830, cell 580490-1103 or visit the website: www. themarketplaceatardmore.com.

Working Lines Continued from page 59 are sired by Sugar Bars and out of daughters of Leo. The sisters are Juleo and Flit both sired by Leo and out of Julie W. Sugar Bar Flit is a full brother to the famous barrel sire Flit Bar. The Champion of the Ladies Barrel Racing at the 2014 Indian National Finals was HF A Nifty Frenchman by Frenchmans Guy. This mare is out of Nifty Jet Bars by Leo Sugar Jet Bars by Easy Jet. The dam of Leo Sugar Jet Bars is Sugar Time Bars by Sugar Bars and out of Bucket Baby by Leo. The dam of Nifty Jet Bars is Nifty Royal Smoke by Bright Smoke by Mr Gun Smoke a great grandson of Leo. The dam of Nifty Royal Smoke is Times Rosetta

by Time Royal by Bar H Leo by Leo. Another measure of the success of any stallion is how his daughters perform. An example of the potential of Frenchmans Guy as a broodmare sire is a mare named Frenchmans Wild Heart. This mare is the dam of A Special Colour, a multiple futurity and derby champion that has won over $100,000. This horse was the 2012 top earning derby barrel horse of the year. The sons of Frenchmans Guy are carrying on as sires of good performers. They include horses like Frenchmans Fabulous, Frenchmans Feature and Traffic Guy. Frenchmans Fabulous is the sire of horses like Kn Fabs Mist Of Fame winner of the 2012 Fort Smith Barrel Futurity. Frenchmans Feature is the sire of

Page 110

horses like Honor Thy Frenchman, an NFR qualifier that set the arena record in Las Vegas going 13.37 seconds in 2013. Traffic Guy is the sire of Stoli My Guy, who set an arena record at the BFA Barrel Futurity in Oklahoma City in 2013. Myers emphasizes his feelings of how the female family of Frenchmans Guy has been a major influence on his sire record. “I was just starting out training and I saw most of those mares from that family and I saw them in person. They were beautiful mares with great conformation. And I thought at that time, if I ever go to raise horses this is the kind I want to raise. They were ahead of their time and they had class. And now I credit much of his success back to this maternal side of his pedigree and how that class comes through in his colts."

AQHA Superior Halter horse with 169 AQHA points. Robert Redford was like his sire in that he sired only five foal crops and 129 foals. These foals earned 1,628.5 AQHA points with seven superior award winners, two AQHA Champions and nine performance ROM. His get included Sugar Ray Redford, an AQHA Reserve World Champion Weanling Stallions; Zumma, an AQHA Superior Halter Horse, and Rocket Redford, an AQHA Youth World Champion Aged Mare. Red Rose Redford, a son of Robert Redford, an AQHA Champion, is the broodmare sire of Redneck Jet. Redneck Jet is the 2005 AQHA High Point Pole Bending Horse in the open and amateur. He was the 2007 AQHA World Champion Pole Bending Horse. Redneck Jet is the sire of six finalists in the 2014 AQHA World Show Pole Bending. They include Redneck Bazinga, World Champion; TT Redneck Vaga, Reserve World Champion; Redneck Wheels, fourth in finals; Redneck Jettin Down, sixth in finals; How Bouta Redneck, 11th in finals, and TT Redneck Roulette, 12th in finals. Sundance Torino came next. This son of Torino earned 25 halter points. Lke his sire, he lived a short life. He sired only 13 foals. One of them was Impressive Sundance. This stallion was the 1987 AQHA Amateur World Champion Aged Stallion, the 1985 AQHA Reserve World Champion Two-Year-Old Halter Stallion, and the 1986 AQHA Amateur High Point Halter Stallion. The last foal

out of Frosty Money was Everything Dandy by A Grand Dandy. This stallion earned four AQHA halter points. The pedigree of Frosty Money is different from some of the other Debnam mares. She was sired by Jimmy Mac Bee by Sonny Day Be by Stormy Day More by Waggoner’s Rainy Day. The dam of Jimmy Mac Bee is Miss Hackberry by Hackberry Red by Little Tom B. Little Tom B is sired by King P-234. Thus, there is King P-234 shared between Torino and Frosty Money. Jimmy Mac Bee is the sire of Duane Walker’s great AQHA Hall of Fame stallion Jackie Bee. The dam of Miss Hackberry is Miss Amber. She was sired by a Matador Horse and a Matador Mare from the Matador Ranch. The dam of Frosty Money is Red Dee Money by My Red Money. The dam of My Red Money is Miss Amber. This makes Frosty Money double bred to Miss Amber with a breeding pattern of 3 X 3. Miss Amber was bred on the Matador Land and Cattle Company, one of the great Texas Ranches that have helped form the foundation of the American Quarter Horse. Torino’ sire record shows he sired horses that earned 23 ROM, six AQHA Champions and five Superior award winners. From these 23 ROM, 18 were out of the five mares covered in this story; five of the six AQHA Champions are out of these mares and three of the five superior award winners were out of these mares. With this in mind once the old saying applies– “what might have been” had Torino lived longer and he and his mares had continued.
