Cowboy Essence...Everyday! Cowboy Essence is the self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best
you are capable of becoming.
The cowboy culture has long been admired for many wonderful characteristics: hard work, integrity, ambition, self-reliance, family values, confidence, honesty, loyalty, having a relationship with the season of the year, and perseverance through hard times as well as gratitude during the good times. We are fortunate to have the cowboy culture to remind us of Cowboy Essence. But no matter who we are or where we are in our lives, we all have the opportunity to demonstrate these qualities. Examples are everywhere as the spirit of the American cowboy filters into all aspects of our communities, culture and society whether we’re a schoolteacher, physician, firefighter, law enforcement officer, businessperson, civil service worker, outdoor recreationist, student or family member at home. Cowboy Essence creates that peace of mind that comes from knowing our heritage and that we are at our best. – The Constitution of Babbitt Ranches, Article III

The Rollback: Don't Hurry Your Horse Through the Turn By Cal Middleton How can I get my horse to do a more correct rollback? The rollback is something that we have all struggled with at times. It is a simple 180 degree rotation with a lope out, but it can be complicated to train and execute. Just like everything else, the better job you do with your initial training, the easier it will be to end up with a correct rollback later in the show pen. Take your time and get it right. The foundation of the rollback is simple. For a left rollback the horse must have its weight on its hindquarters when you pick up your hand/hands. As the nose softly tips left, the left side of the body should slightly bend and soften, and the left hind quarter can shift barely to the right up under the horse. This allows for the horse to follow your hand with its front left leg, cleanly stepping through with its shoulders. Then it can push off with its hind end to properly lift itself up while leaving the rollback. None of this changes whether you are reining or working a cow. The foundation is the same. With further training on a cow, the horse will learn to suck back a little more, In an ideal reining rollback the horse will stand its shoulders up more. But this is generally up to the horse and is not something to concern yourself about. As long as the horse is holding itself up and isn't pushing itself backwards with its front end or pushing against your hands/bridle, then you should be ok. For a long time, I practice this footwork at the walk. Do not get in a hurry during the rollback. Never ask your horse to hurry with its front end until all the footwork is correct.
You do not want your horse jumping/ hopping its front end over. I would never want my horse to jump over to change directions when it is young. I would especially never ask it to change directions in the round pen or during groundwork by stepping in front of it and making its front feet leave the ground. All this does later is teach the horse to lock up when it feels pressure. Go slow and keep the horse stepping in rhythm, correct and balanced. Then later you add energy and the horse will learn to pick itself up and move faster. Just as in proper cow work, never hurry a young horse in the turn itself. You turn correctly, then you hurry the horse to get to the cow. Eventually the horse will learn to hurry through the turn while staying correct. I spend lot of time backing in circles and/or half circles, pushing the hindquarters out of the way and then letting the horse come through with its shoulders. As you move closer to being show ready, remember that you need to get the horse to follow the direction of your hand. Your horse needs to be able to be pulled through the turn, but the broker it gets, the more it should follow your hand with light direction. If you try to pull too much your horse will learn to brace against you rather than pick itself up. When you show a reining horse, the rollback is a part of the same maneuver as the sliding stop. Be sure your horse is finished stopping and has its feet under itself. Then, for a left rollback, look over your left shoulder and put a little more weight in your right foot. Your hand should direct the horse to the left, but be slow and give the horse time to follow your hand. After the horse turns about 100 degrees, you can add
Cal Middleton is a professional horse trainer and world champion reiner. your right leg to help him finish up the rollback and lope out. Be sure you are sitting back and looking up, and that your hand is forward and down, then use both legs if needed to tell your horse to leave the rollback. If your horse leaves the rollback too soon you can school it by stopping, using your hands to spin it past 180 degrees, maybe 360 or so, then lope it straight out. This will help the horse learn to pick its shoulders up and follow your hands better. Remember all good training should happen with your hands; your legs are just there to assist. The goal is to get your horse guiding and doing the maneuvers with your reins. Your legs are simply used to help get your horse to whatever position your hands already told it to get to. I'll be hitting the road soon to see if my rollbacks are working properly when I get to the shows. I'll be the MWRHA Flag Day Reining in Cloverdale, IN, June 12-14. Come out and watch and come say hello. Until next time, ride smarter not harder. Send your questions to cal@ calmiddleton.com.

Working Lines
Dr. Don Wade and His Platinum Cross By Larry Thornton In the last issue of Working Horse Magazine, Working Lines detailed how legendary horseman Dr. Don Wade became a successful breeder. Wade reminisced about horses like Sugar Leo, The Pimpernel (TB), Jill’s Lady, Sugar Vaquero, White Sox Lady, Annie Wade, Bar H Leo and Gold Rush 2 helped him achieve much of his success. Like all good breeders, Wade’s goal was to breed a better horse. He was one of those serious breeders that is on the lookout for the “better mouse trap” so to speak, when it comes to breeding that better horse. Wade studied and worked to find the right formulas to breed good quarter horses. He was always looking for a good “nick” or a good cross between the bloodlines he brought together. (A nick is the ability of certain stallions and mares to produce superior foals when
mated with each other. ) One of the crosses or “nicks’ that Wade had a great deal of success with was the Tabano King/ Silver Wimpy cross. This cross is an example of one of those “better mouse trap” breeding patterns that helped put Don Wade on the leading breeders’ list of AQHA Champions through his own name and in his partnership in the North Wales Quarter Horses. Don Wade describes how he came to own Tabano King. “I
had sold Vaquero King to Mike Bauchman in New York and I took the money and my wife and went to looking for a son of King P-234. Of course Jess Hankins and Lowell Hankins were friends, so I went there and other places looking for a son of King.” (Jess Hankins was the owner of King P-234.) “I saw in The Quarter Horse Journal where they had this colt for sale by King. I went to Punk Snyder’s place in Brady, Texas, to see him. He was six weeks old.
Tabano King was a son of King P-234 that was bred to the King Ranch breeding found in the Scharbauer breeding program. The cross made him a leading sire in the early ‘60s.

He was out of a granddaughter of Macanudo with some thoroughbred on the bottom of his pedigree. I thought that would cross real well on the King, as far as performance was concerned. So I bought the colt from his breeder, Emmett Donegan for–it wasn’t much–I think I gave $1,500 for him. We went back and got him when he was four months old and took him to Ohio.” Wade named him Tabano King. According to Wade, “tabano” in Spanish means “cow chasing fly” (although the actual definition is horsefly). Tabano King grew into a show horse. He earned four halter points with two Grand Championships and four Reserve Grand Championships from seven shows. He earned six reining points and 2.5 western pleasure points. The pedigree of Tabano King is the epitome of a performance horse. His sire King P-234 set the standard for performance as one of the all time great sires. King P-234 became a leading sire of Register of Merit performance horses, a leading sire of AQHA Champions and a leading broodmare sire of AQHA Champions. His daughters produced

King sired such noted performers as Poco Bueno, an AQHA Champion; Gay Widow, an AQHA Champion; Continental King, AQHA Superior Reining Horse and NRHA Hall of Fame; King’s Joe Boy, an AQHA Champion; Power Command, an AQHA Champion; Martha King, the 1958 AQHA High Point Reining Mare, and Royal King, an NCHA Reserve World Champion. The sire of King was Zantanon, a legendary racehorse known as the “Man O’War of Mexico.” Zantanon was the sire of such noted stallions as Ed Echols, Zantanon Jr, San Siemon and Chico. The sire of Zantanon was Little Joe by the foundation stallion Traveler. The dam of Little Joe was Jenny by Sykes Rondo. Sykes Rondo was sired by McCoy Billy by Old Billy. Jenny was out of
May Mangum by Anthony by Old Billy. Little Joe was a full brother to another great sire Possum (King), a famous Texas running horse that went to Arizona to become a foundation sire. The dam of King was Jabalina by Strait Horse. Strait Horse was sired by Yellow Jacket. Yellow Jacket was sired by Little Rondo by Lock’s Rondo. The dam of Yellow Jacket was Barbee Dun by Lock’s Rondo. This makes Yellow Jacket inbred to Lock’s Rondo. Lock’s Rondo was sired by Whalebone by Old Billy. Jabalina was out of a mare known as the Bay Quarter Mare. Some pedigree researchers have reported that the Bay Quarter Mare was a daughter of Traveler. This would make King a double bred Traveler stallion. The dam of Tabano King was Little Red Annie who was sired by a King Ranch bred stallion named

King P-234 was called the “Cornerstone of the Industry” for his siring ability. He crossed on many bloodlines and one of the best was with Wimpy P-1. Photo courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum Pere Pleme. Pere Pleme was sired by Macanudo. Macanudo was sired by Old Sorrel and out of Canales Belle by Roan Clegg Horse. Old Sorrel was sired by Hickory Bill by Peter McCue. The dam of Old Sorrel was the Dr Rose Mare, whose pedigree is unknown. The Roan Clegg Horse was sired by Hickory Bill, making Macanudo a double bred Hickory Bill stallion. The dam of Pere Pleme was a mare called 6 Clegg Mare by a horse listed in the AQHA Stud Book as Little Joe’s Son who was sired by Little Joe the grandsire of King P-234. The dam of the 6 Clegg Mare was a daughter of Hickory Bill. This makes Pere Plume linebred to Hickory Bill. The dam of Little Red Annie was Black Annie. The Stud Book says the sire of Black Annie was Indigo. “While there wasn’t many Macanudo horses in the country, I think you could depend on a
Macanudo bred horse to be a real solid kind of horse,” Wade says. “Horses that you could train and then continue to show and their record of performance was nearly equal right straight through their performance career, and that was the kind of horse I was looking for.” Macanudo was used as a sire on the King Ranch from 1937 to 1949. Seventy-one of his daughters and two of his sons were used in the King Ranch breeding program. He was the sire of such noted horses as Babe Mac C, one of the first AQHA Champions, and Pep-Up, the broodmare sire of the NCHA World Champion full brothers Peppy San and Mr San Peppy. Wade was a student of bloodlines and he would travel to look at horses. One of his traveling companions was the AQHA inspector Walter Brooks. One of the places they went was to the Scharbauer Cattle Company of Midland, TX.
Page 22
This was Wade’s introduction to the Scharbauer horses and the beginning of his friendship with the late Clarence Scharbauer Jr. Clarence Scharbauer Jr. and his Scharbauer Cattle Company have had a major impact in the quarter horse industry. The Scharbauer Cattle Company is on the list of leading breeders of AQHA Champions and Register of Merit show horses. They are the breeders of 17 AQHA Champions and 70 ROM show horses. Scharbauer’s success in the quarter horse industry took him into the AQHA Hall of Fame and earned him an AQHA Legacy Award. He was the AQHA President in 1975. Scharbauer was active in the thoroughbred industry with the great runner Alysheba, the 1986 Kentucky Derby winner and the 1987 Horse of the Year. Alysheba was owned by Scharbauer’s wife Dorothy and their daughter Pam. The success of the Scharbauer family in the Texas thoroughbred industry lead them to develop Valor Farms, a leading thoroughbred breeding farm. Wade brought Tabano King and the Scharbauer mares together. “By this time North Wales Quarter Horses was getting started. We were putting together a nice group of horses for that point in time. I was looking for something like what Scharbauer had to cross with my King horse and to use in Virginia.” The Scharbauer breeding program had used such sires as Silver Wimpy, Royal Peppy and Smoky Jr, all King Ranch bred stallions. Silver Wimpy was sired by Wimpy P-1. Royal Peppy was sired by Peppy P-212. Smoky Jr was sired by Smoky by Old Sorrel. The foundation of the Scharbauer breeding program was a group of mares that are often listed in the Stud Book as Scharbauer Mares. The sires of these mares were horses like Tallwood, Buck Garrett, Sir Dar, Timemeter and Old John. The offspring of the King Ranch

stallions and the Scharbauer mares were then bred to such stallions as Scharbauer’s Pale Face by Pale Face H and Scharbauer’s King. Scharbauer’s King was a son of King P-234 that was out of Little Ginger H by Joe Bailey P-4. Little Ginger H was out of a daughter of King Tabano King was small in stature, but Wade says he “put the best mind” in the foals he sired of any stallion he knew. P-234, making Scharbauer’s King double bred to King P-234. Scharbauer’s King was the sire of six AQHA Champions, all of whom show King Ranch breeding in their dam’s pedigrees. Of these six AQHA Champions, five carry the blood of Silver Wimpy in their dam’s
Tabano King was small in stature, but Wade says he “put the best mind” in the foals he sired of any stallion he knew. pedigree. They include Betsy Cee, Fifi King, Fortunate Five, Liz Five and Pardner Five. “I saw some mares by Silver Wimpy that were great and big, a little bit rough and I thought this King horse (Tabano King) was going to be refined and pretty headed,’ Wade recalls. “So I bred him to the Silver Wimpy mares, Royal Peppy mares and Smoky Jr’s and I could guarantee the performance of every colt when they were born.” Wade stresses the Silver Wimpy cross as the best of a good thing. Silver Wimpy was no stranger as a sire of good horses. One of his daughter’s was a mare called Marion’s Girl. This is the mare that Buster Welch won the NCHA World Championship on in 1954 and 1956. She was an AQHA Champion
as well. Ironically Marion’s Girl died while in foal to King P-234 in 1958. Marion’s Girl was Scharbauerbred following the pattern described above. She was a daughter of Silver Wimpy and out of Joan Scharbauer by Tallwood, a thoroughbred. Joan Scharbauer was out of a Scharbauer mare by Old John. Betsy Scharbauer was one of the Scharbauer mares sired by Silver Wimpy. Her dam was Daisy Scharbauer by a horse listed as a Scharbauer Horse by Sir Dar by Sweep. The dam of Daisy Scharbauer was a Scharbauer Mare by Buck Garrett by Rickety. Mares like Betsy Scharbauer made Silver Wimpy a leading broodmare sire of AQHA Champions. His daughters produced 15 AQHA Champions. Betsy Scharbauer is the dam of Liz Five, and Betsy Cee, both AQHA Champions by Scharbauer’s King. Liz Five was the dam of High Proof, 1974 AQHA World Champion Junior Reining Horse, 1976 AQHA World Champion Senior Reining Horse and an NRHA Hall of Fame member. Betsy Cee was the dam of the AQHA Champion Blair Cee. Blair Cee was the dam of Miss Cee Blair, dam of the 1995 NRHA World Champion Reining Horse Cee Blair Sailor. Silver Wimpy was sired by Wimpy P-1. Wimpy P-1 was sired by Solis by Old Sorrel and he was out of Panda by Old Sorrel. The dam of Silver Wimpy was a mare named Silver Lucy, a full sister to Macanudo. “We used to call the Tabano King/Silver Wimpy cross the platinum cross,” Wade notes. “When I used Tabano King, who was a 14.2 hand bay horse and a real pretty headed horse, with the larger bulky Silver Wimpy mares, I got a horse that was 15 hands, had a world of ability and a lot of sense. You could haul them, feed them any place, drink any water and go right along
with them. Those were the horses I thought were the solid kind of horses.” Tabano King was small in stature, but Wade says he “put the best mind” in the foals he sired of any stallion he knew. Wade says Tabano King also had” a lot of muscle and maneuverability and a lot of training ability” in his colts. Tabano King sired only 208 registered foals. He had 93 performers with 55 ROM, 13 AQHA Champions and five Superior performers. By the time Tabano King was six years old, he was on the leading sires list for halter horses for 1962. The 13 AQHA Champions sired by Tabano King represent almost of 14 percent of his performance point earners. This is a good sample of his best show horses to help evaluate this cross. Of those AQHA Champions five were out of daughters of Silver Wimpy. Tabano King sired 55 ROM with 10 out of Silver Wimpy mares. Nineteen of his 93 performers were out of daughters of Silver Wimpy. The cross of Tabano King on Scharbauer’s King mares produced nine more performers that earned five more ROM and one more AQHA Championship in Tabano Robin. These nine performers were out of three different mares and all three have Silver Wimpy on the dam’s side of their pedigree. The next mares we will talk about are Bay Daisy Five and Pat Five. Bay Daisy Five produced one ROM performer by Tabano King. Her name was Tabano Daisy who was ROM in the youth division. Pat Five was the dam of the ROM performer by Tabano King named Tabano Patsy. Both of these ROM producers carried Silver Wimpy in their pedigree. Pat Five was sired by High Five and Bay Daisy Five was sired by Scharbauer’s Paleface. As noted in last issue’s article on Don Wade, he owned Annie Wade. Annie Wade was the dam of four

AQHA Champions-none of them by Tabano King. But one of her ROM was Tabano Kelle by Tabano King. The sire of Annie Wade was Wimpy II. Wimpy II was sired by Wimpy P-1 and out of Ann Wilson’s Daughter. Ann Wilson’s Daughter was sired by Old Sorrel and out of Ann Wilson, who was sired by a horse named Jack Hare Jr. Wimpy II was a sire in Oklahoma for John Dawson. Dawson was a major breeder with his mare Babe Dawson and her son Oklahoma
Wade believes that the fact that Silver Lucy and Macanudo were full brother and sister is a key to the success of this cross.
Star Jr. Wimpy II was an outstanding broodmare sire just like Silver Wimpy. The Wimpy II daughters produced 17 AQHA Champions. This puts Wimpy II on the leading broodmare sires list of AQHA Champions with Silver Wimpy. Wimpy II was the broodmare sire of two more Tabano King AQHA Champions, so that eight of the 13 AQHA Champions (61 percent) have a cross to Wimpy P-1 in their dam’s pedigree. Both Tabano King and Wimpy II mares carry the Dawson blood discussed above. The AQHA Champion Tabano Reno was out of Dawson’s Tillie by Wimpy II. Her dam was Little Babe, who was out of Dawson’s great mare Babe Dawson. The other AQHA Champion was Tabano Command. This horse’s dam was Dawson’s I Wonder. Her sire was Wimpy II and her dam was a daughter of Oklahoma Star Jr, who was out of Babe Dawson. Tabano King sired six foals that
won seven superior awards. Three foals had dams with ties to Wimpy P-1 in their pedigrees, and earned four of these Superior Awards: Tabano Dave, Tabano Debbie and Dawson’s Lil Dee earned three superiors in Western Pleasure and one in Reining. Wade calls Tabano Star the best of them all. “She was an AQHA Champion very early in her twoyear-old year. She was unbeaten as a two-year-old in western pleasure. I worked her on cattle myself and took her to the NCHA Futurity. She was second in the 1st go round but lost out in the second go. She was a real honest kind of horse.” Wade took Tabano Star to Florida after the NCHA Futurity and marked a 75 with her. He had Deuce Five at the same show and he marked a 73. Deuce Five was a Silver Wimpy gelding that was the 1964 AQHA High Point Cutting Horse. He was also an NCHA Top Ten qualifier. Tabano Star was out of Carmen Five by Silver Wimpy. The dam of Carmen Five was Sue Scharbauer by Smoky Jr. Smoky Jr was sired by Smoky. Smoky was sired by Old Sorrel. This makes Carmen Five linebred to the King Ranch stallion Old Sorrel. Smoky’s dam was La Ruben by a horse named the Thompson Stud. Her dam was a Little Joe mare. Carmen Five was the dam of two more AQHA Champions by Tabano King, Tabano Bay and Tabano Knight. Wade’s Platinum Cross shows the mating of a stallion with a group of mares from a specific bloodline namely the Wimpy line of mares and we referred to this as a “nick.” Tabano King and the Silver Wimpy mares have a common bond between the stallion and the mares, with the full brother and sister Macanudo and Silver Lucy - a “blood affinity” or a “nick with a blood affinity.” Wade believes that the fact that Silver Lucy and Macanudo were full brother and sister is a key to
Page 24
the success of this cross. Another example of this type of mating would have to include the great sisters Lady Coolidge and Dixie Beach. Often these two mares are found in the same pedigree. Monsieur Joe was the 1953 AQHA High Point Halter Horse is a good example. He is sired by Red Star Joe, who is by Little Jodie. Little Jodie was out of Dixie Beach. The dam of Monsieur Joe was Westmoreland by Bert. Bert was a son of Lady Coolidge. The King/Wimpy “nick” has proven to be successful for a lot of people, not just Don Wade. This is the cross that produced Joe Cody, the NRHA Hall of Fame sire. Joe Cody was sired by Bill Cody by Wimpy and his dam was Taboo by King P-234. Of course Joe Cody is the sire of horses like High Proof, a two-time AQHA World Champion Reining Horse; Sapphire Cody, an AQHA
High Proof, Vincents My Way and A Famous Amos indicate the success of linebreeding to the King P-234 and Wimpy cross, a crossing of two bloodlines that produced superior foals with lines that complement each other. wasn’t the only good horse from this cross. He is a full brother to Rachel Forrest, the winner of 156 AQHA points. She has a Superior in Trail and two youth ROM’s. Coin Cody, another sibling from this cross, has an ROM with 32 open and 16 youth performance points. High Proof and his siblings are bred along similar lines as the Tabano King/Silver Wimpy cross on both sides of the pedigree. Their sire is Joe Cody by Bill Cody by Wimpy P-1. Joe Cody’s dam is Taboo by King P-234, while their dam, Liz Five is sired by Scharbauer’s King by King P-234 and out of Betsy Scharbauer by Silver Wimpy. Another NRHA Hall of Fame horse is Great Pine. This great great grandson of King was out of a mare by Town Crier, a grandson of Wimpy P-1. Poco Bright Star was the sire of Great Pine. This son of Poco Pine was out of a mare that carried a cross to Macanudo, giving him a King/Wimpy cross on the top of his pedigree. Poco Bright Star was a full brother to the great mare Poco Margaret, the 1962 AQHA High Point Halter Horse. Poco Margaret was the dam of several noted show horses including Gold Margarita, an AQHA High Point Halter Horse in 1971. Great Pine was an AQHA Champion and perennial leading sire in the reining industry. His foals include A Famous Amos and Vincents My Way, an NRHA Derby winner. Vincents My Way has three crosses to Wimpy and three crosses to King P-234 in his pedigree. A
Wimpy P-1 was bred on the King Ranch. He was a great stallion that has had a significant impact on the breed. The dam of Amie’s Ace was Gato Command. Gato Command was sired by Blue Command by Power Command by King P-234. The dam of Gato Command was The Catsmeow by Wimpy II. High Proof, Vincents My Way and A Famous Amos indicate the success of linebreeding to the King P-234 and Wimpy cross, a crossing of two bloodlines that produced
superior foals with lines that complement each other. The King/Wimpy cross is one of the great nicks in the quarter horse industry. The Tabano King/Silver Wimpy cross is just one form of this very successful cross between these AQHA Hall of Fame members. The success of this cross is a blueprint for looking at bloodlines that will nick in the future. So the next time you’re looking for a nick, look for the “blood affinity” that may be a key in the success of that cross. Look what it did for Don Wade!

Healing Horses with Herbs
Medicinal Herbs: More complex than antibiotics By Patrick Jones, DVM Silver Lining Herbs In 1928 the world changed when a microbiologist named Alexander Flemming discovered a miracle called penicillin. Penicillin is a chemical produced by the Penicillium mold. The mold doesn’t like to compete with bacteria, so it kills them. Penicillin’s discovery opened the door to more research and antibiotics were born. More and more of these wonder drugs were discovered, developed and marketed. Disease was on the ropes and it seemed mankind had struck a
“super bugs” some of which are resistant to all known antibiotics. As a result of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics the microbial world has changed. For most species, evolution takes eons. For bacteria, it takes days. When a bacterium is born that is naturally resistant to an antibiotic, it has the ability to transfer that resistance to other bacteria, not merely by passing the gene to its own offspring (at a reproductive rate 500,000 times faster than our own) but also directly to other adult bacteria. On their cell
devastating and final blow to the microbial world. It seemed only a matter of time before bacterial disease was eradicated from the face of the Earth. In the midst of the enthusiastic physicians’ cries that the germ war was over and the businessmen’s rejoicing over the birth of a new multi-billion dollar industry, was one quiet voice of concern. It was Alexander Flemming again. He said he was seeing something unusual in his laboratory: Some of the bacteria were becoming resistant. No one listened. In 1929, one year after Flemming discovered penicillin, 14 percent of Staphylococcus aureus bacteria had become resistant to the drug. In 1950, 59 percent were resistant. In 1995 the number had reached 95 percent. Other antibiotics have produced similar results. Our hospitals are now populated by
membranes, bacteria carry small packages of DNA called plasmids. When two bacteria meet, they exchange plasmids and incorporate the other bug’s DNA into their own. And they don’t even have to be the same kind of bacteria! Even worse, the bacteria seem to have the equivalent of a microbial “internet” using chemical signals to communicate with other bacteria inviting them to come and get a copy of the neat new, drug-resistant plasmid they have. Researchers have also proven that bacteria can develop resistance to multiple other antibiotics with exposure to only one drug. Fortunately there is another solution- medicinal herbs. Many plants contain anti-bacterial compounds. Almost without exception, those compounds are more complex and vastly more numerous than the medicines found
in antibiotic pharmaceuticals. For example, penicillin has one active ingredient-penicillin. Garlic by comparison, contains about 37 active ingredients. These complex botanical wonders present the bacteria with such numerous and varied chemicals that resistance is practically impossible. Combine several herbs together and you can increase the effect dramatically. In addition to anti-microbial herbs, there are also many herbs that stimulate the immune system making it easier for the body to resist or defeat infections. There are even herbs with anti-viral properties, something that modern medicine is just beginning to address with pharmaceuticals (and which will certainly meet with the same resistance issues that bacteria have developed). There have been many times in my veterinary practice when I have been faced with patients with severe infections that were not responsive to antibiotics either due to resistant bacteria or viruses. With the help of botanical allies, I often have success turning these cases around. Silver Lining Herbs #24 Immune Support and #25 INF-X can have a great impact on infectious disease cases. Each product contains numerous herbs, each with multiple anti-microbial and/or immune stimulating properties. With allies like these we may win the war after all. Dr. Patrick P. Jones is a licensed veterinarian practicing in Southern Idaho, a graduate of Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine, and the Silver Lining corporate veterinarian.

Mares with More
Jay Moss - A True Quarter Horse Matriarch By Larry Thornton We use the word “matriarch” to describe a mare that is the foundation of a family of horses. Many of our “Mares with More” are matriarchs of the American Quarter Horse. One of the mares that deserves the title of matriarch is Jay Moss who has proven to be the founder of a family of horses influencing the breed today. Thus Jay Moss is our newest mare with more. Jay Moss was a 1966 gray mare that was bred by Tom Lee Quarter Horses of Fort Wayne, IN. Tom Lee Quarter Horses was the one time home of Rey Jay. Rey Jay was an outstanding performer that is often referred to as the “one eyed” cutter because of an eye injury he sustained as a foal. This injury affected his ability to see for the rest of his life.
Despite the injury, Rey Jay became a great performer. He was an AQHA Champion, an AQHA Superior Cutting Horse and an NCHA Bronze Award winner. He earned 257 cutting points, 12 halter points and 4.5 western pleasure points in the AQHA. We often see Rey Jay associated with such noted stallions as his maternal grandsons Freckles Playboy and Colonel Freckles. Rey Jay proved to be an outstanding sire of cutting horses as well. This is demonstrated in the 1966 NCHA Futurity Champion Rey Jay’s Pete. Rey Jay’s Pete was an unregistered son of Rey Jay that was out of an unregistered thoroughbred mare. Rey Jay’s Pete was owned by the late Kenneth Peters, an Indiana trainer and cutter that worked for Tom Lee. Cliff Peters (Pete’s son) recalled

his family’s ties to the Tom Lee Quarter Horses and Rey Jay: “My dad was one of the first to have cutting horses in this area. We always lived in town but my dad had horses all of his life. Dad had a full time job and we kept a horse or two at Tom’s place. He helped them with their horses. He would work the board off by riding, working on fence, building stalls or what have you. He was a pretty handy carpenter. He helped Tom and Delight (Tom’s wife) and Tom’s dad with the cattle and the horse end of it, because he knew a lot about horses. When Dad semi-retired, he went to work for Tom and his dad, Fred. He rode horses. Fred was a cattle buyer and he rode truck for him.” This is where Rey Jay’s Pete comes into the picture. Kenneth Peters started Rey Jay’s Pete and

Rey Jay and Tom Lee were a top team. Then Tom was injured in an accident and he was unable to continue his horse activities. Tom Lee is the breeder of Jay Moss and Rey Jay's Pete. Photo courtesy the Peters Family then decided to enter him in the fledgling NCHA Futurity. Rey Jay’s Pete was bred by Tom Lee. In Sally Harrison’s history of the NCHA Futurity,” Cutting Horse Gold,” Kenneth Peters remembers the dam of Rey Jay’s Pete to be a “big buckskin grade mare.” Harrison indicates that he was a full sister to Miss Rey Jay. Miss Rey Jay is registered in the AQHA Stud Book as out of an unregistered mare named Honey. She is now listed in the AQHA Computer Records as Tom’s Honey. Harrison reports that she was sired by a son of Raffles. Miss Rey Jay was an ROM performer with 46 performance points and 10 halter points. She was an NCHA Certificate of Ability winner with earnings of $2,737.72. She was the dam of two foals with
one performer in Miss Rey Lena who earned $3,342.22. Gala Nettles in her book, “Fame And Glory,” on the first decade of the NCHA Futurity, reports through Kenneth Peters that Miss Rey Jay was a very

good looking mare while her brother was not going to be a halter horse. When Peters entered his horse in the NCHA Futurity it was late and

thus he had to find out how to make the late entry and pay the appropriate fee. This lead to a conversation with Marion Flynt, the then President of the National Cutting Horse Association. It was through this conversation that Buster Welch, a friend and trainer for Flynt, would ask to ride Rey Jay’s Pete in the Futurity. And if he liked the colt he would buy him after the Futurity. Well as it turned out Rey Jay’s Pete and Buster Welch won the 1966 NCHA Futurity. Welch bought the horse and then sold him to S. J. Agnew. Rey Jay’s Pete went on to be an NCHA Silver Award winner and a top ten qualifier in the open and nonpro divisions of the NCHA. “After we won the futurity with Rey Jay’s Pete, we came home and we bought Jay Moss as a yearling.,”

Cliff Peters continues. “My Dad was pretty high on her and he wanted her. When we won the Futurity we sold Rey Jay’s Pete to Buster and Dad purchased Jay Moss because he wanted to keep some Rey Jay blood.” “When we broke her she was like the Rey Jay’s, she went to a cow on her own,” Peters says about Jay Moss. “I’m kind of partial to them, but they were like a bird dog going to the bird on a point, that’s the way those Rey Jay’s work cattle.” “You could get a Rey Jay that was a little broncy and if you could get them in a pen of cattle, you could probably break that horse with those cows,” Peters adds about the Rey Jay’s ability to work a cow early in their training. “They were natural cow horses. I don’t know of any that didn’t have cow in them. If they were tried on cattle they would cut. They had the cow in them and they were athletes.” The Peters’ found the ability to cow was a common denominator in the Rey Jay foals. “If you bred Rey Jay to a little better quality mare, you got a little better quality horse. If you bred Rey Jay to a mediocre mare you would get a mediocre looking horse, but they all were athletes and would cut. “Jay Moss was out of a big stout mare and so by crossing that mare with Rey Jay, we got a little better quality colt. She was one of the nicer ones. She was so stout when she got older you could walk between her front legs. It was like riding on a 55-gallon barrel. But for a big stout mare she was agile and very athletic. “We showed her quite a little bit but the shows we showed her at weren’t always NCHA approved. They were jackpots or the class we showed in didn’t have enough of a purse to be approved. She always paid her way down the road. She never cost us anything because she usually got in the money. I showed her a little bit in the open and nonpro. At that time the non-pro was

"...the money meant more to us than keeping the mare at that price. We sold her for $10,000. That was a lot of money for a broodmare... Cliff Peters of winnings.” She is credited with $559.93 in official NCHA earnings.
“Jay Moss was a real personable horse easy to be around and never really caused trouble in the barn. She was rank around other horses. She would run across the field to fight. So we had to keep her pretty much separated. She was the boss mare and maybe that is what made her so good. “As far as cutting you couldn’t ask for a better cutting horse. We didn’t work her as much as we would have liked to. If we could have worked her on a more steady basis, she could have gone on to compete for the World. She was that kind of horse. Real solid good horse. “You didn’t have to worry about her making a lot of mistakes. Her biggest problem was too cow fresh and that was typical of a Rey Jay. They get a cow out in front of them and they explode with a lot of expression and the like. A lot of the Rey Jay breeding was like that and she was special.” Kenneth Peters kept Jay Moss until she was 11 years old. It was at that time that she was sold to Marion Flynt. Flynt bought Rey Jay after Tom Lee was injured in a horse accident. Famed trainer and horseman Dale Wilkinson was the agent handling the sale of the mare. Cliff Peters remembers Wilkinson’s response to seeing Jay Moss: “ ‘Send the money back to Marion, this is a good mare and we’ll keep her here and breed her to Mr Gun Smoke.’ We just chuckled because the money meant more to us than keeping the mare at that price. We sold her for $10,000. That was a lot of money for a broodmare and for working people like my dad. He chose to sell her. She was a quality horse.” Flynt kept Jay Moss for several years and then sold her to Kevin B. McClory of Medford, OR. Cliff recalls that she was sold in the Riddle Sale in 1980. McClory kept the mare until 1982 when she was sold to W. R. Brooks of Boulder, CO. The last recorded owner of Jay Moss was the Arrowhead Ranch of Medford, OR, and they bought her in 1986. It was during these moves that this fine mare made her greatest contribution through her foals. The first foal out of Jay Moss was Smokes Rambler by Freckles Smoke. This horse was bred by Marion Flynt and foaled in 1979. Smokes Rambler has no show record. The next foal out of Jay Moss put this great mare on the production map. She was bred to Doc’s Lynx in 1980 to produce Rey Lynx in 1981. Rey Lynx earned $559,422.39 in a very good show career. Linda Holmes showed Nurse Elaine, who was out of High Brow Nurse a daughter of Nurse Rey, to the Non-Pro Reserve Championship
of the NCHA Non-Pro Futurity in 2003. “This was the first foal I have gotten to show out of this mare,” Holmes says. “You can really feel it in this mare. You can feel so much Nurse Rey in her almost more than her mother. I felt it in her mother and I feel it even more in the next generation.” Describing some the Nurse Rey descendants, Holmes says, “They work so low. These colts stay low to the ground. They rate a cow so good and they do it from an early age, just like she did. She rated a cow from the first time she saw one. These colts want to be the same way and they are all sensitive. The softer you are with them the better they work.” Holmes says she has found that others, like TR Dual Rey, the 2002 NCHA Derby Open and 2002 Super Stakes Open Reserve Champion by Duel Rey, has a working style like his grandam Nurse Rey. Cliff Peters picked up on this as well. He noted how the descendants of Jay Moss in the 2003 Futurity had a working style very similar to Jay Moss. Buster Welch explains where this ability comes from. “Rey Jay got real low to the ground. He had a lot of style for a horse in that day...I think some of it was that he had a lot of cow and that bad eye. He tried so hard to keep a cow under control, where he could see her. That gave him a little extra animation. There’s not a whole lot of horses that would look at a cow as hard as he would, concentrate as hard as he did.” Holmes offers another interesting comment about Nurse Rey. “She prefers people over horses and always has and still does to this day. She is out in the pen and has nothing to do with the other horses and only wants people around. If you walk out in the field, she will run the horses away and follow you everywhere. They are really people horses and it really comes through with her. We keep a pet goat with her that keeps her company all the time and she prefers that over horses.”
Page 38
The pedigree of Jay Moss gives us some interesting insight into some of the crosses she has worked with. Rey Jay was a King Ranch bred stallion that was sold off the ranch. His sire was Rey Del Rancho. Rey Del Rancho was described by Buster Welch as the “best King Ranch breeding for cutting horses and agility.” Rey Del Rancho was sired by Ranchero by Old Sorrel. The dam of Ranchero was Borego by Old Sorrel. The dam of Rey Del Rancho was Panda de Trorilla by Babe Grande by Old Sorrel. The dam of Panda de Tordilla was a Norias mare, whose pedigree is unknown. The dam of Rey Jay was Calandria K by Tino. He is a son of Old Sorrel and out of Tordia de Garcia, a mare by the Norias Grey Horse, whose pedigree is unknown. The dam of Tordia de Garcia was a Norias Mare, whose pedigree is also unknown. The dam of Jay Moss was the “big gray ranch mare” Mos Tony Top. This mare was the dam of 11 foals with four performers. In addition to Jay Moss, she was the dam of Tesoro Tony by Tesoro King. Tesoro Tony was an AQHA Champion with 16 halter and 15 performance points and an NCHA money earner. Mos Tony Top is sired by Moss Cotton Top Joe Jr by Cotton Top Joe by Little Joe by Joe Bailey P-4. The dam of Moss Cotton Top Joe Jr is Moss Nellie Bailey by Joe Bailey P-4. The dam of Mos Tony Top is Nigger’s Tiny Grey by Big Nigger by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. The dam of this mare is a daughter of Wardlaw’s Tony by Wheat’s Tony. In reference to the mention above of a link between Jay Moss and Smart Little Lena as a key to their nicking ability, the pedigree of Smart Little Lena shows his third dam was Moss Jackie Tobin. This mare is sired by Wardlaw’s Tobin by Tobin Joe by Little Joe. The dam of Wardlaw’s Tobin was Wardlaw’s Steak by Big Nigger by Harmon

Baker. The dam of Wardlaw’s Streak was a daughter of Wardlaw’s Tony by Wheat’s Tony. The dam of Moss Jackie Tobin was Miss Jackpot XI. Miss Jackpot XI was sired by Jack Pot by Big Nigger by Harmon Baker and her dam is Amanda, sired by Hi Eastland Horse by Harmon Baker. The dam of Amanda was a daughter to Wheat’s Tony. This gives the Jay Moss/Smart Little Lena foals an interesting pedigree tie through Harmon Baker and Wheat’s Tony. All of these Harmon Baker and Wheat’s Tony horses came through the breeding program of by L. B. Wardlaw of Del Rio, TX. Further reinforcement of the link between Smart Little Lena and Jay Moss is the 2003 NCHA Futurity Champion One Smart Lookin Cat by High Brow Cat. Of course, High Brow Cat is out of the Smart Little Lena mare, Smart Little Kitty. This gives One Smart Lookin Cat a cross to the blood of Moss’ Jackie Tobin. The dam of One Smart Lookin Cat is The Smart Look by Smart Little Lena. So we have two crosses to this family of horses. Plus a third: The dam of The Smart Look is Dox Royal Smoke, who is out of Miss Victoria. The dam of Miss Victoria is Royalena by Royal King. She is out of Moss Jack Pat. Moss Jack Pat is sired by Jack Pot. The dam of Moss Jack Pat is Moss’ Patches by Jack Pot and out of Lady Lee. Both Lady Lee and Jack Pot are sired by Big Nigger by Harmon Baker. Moss Jack Pat is the dam of another full sister to Royalena, Royal Strike. Royal Strike is the dam of White Whiskey, the dam of the 1990 NRHA Futurity Champion Two T Whisky Royal. Moss Jack Pat has a
full sister in Moss’ Patches Jr, the dam of Prissy Baby. Prissy Baby is the dam of Spooky Sophie, the dam of Quixote Mac, an NCHA Reserve World Champion Cutting Horse. The similarity in the bloodlines found in the tail female line of these horses is
Dual Rey has now sired foals that have earned in excess of $28 million. an interesting side note to the success of Jay Moss as a producer of her own line of horses. The legacy of Jay Moss starts with the success of Dual Rey, High Brow Nurse and Rey Lena Girl at the 2003 NCHA Futurity. The 2003 Reserve Champion of the open futurity was Twice As Reycy. High Brow Cougar was third in the open and Nurse Elaine was Co-Reserve Champion in the Non-Pro Futurity. High Brow Cougar and Twice As Reycy are out of Rey Lena Girl. Twice As Reycy is sired by Dual Rey and Nurse Elaine is out of High Brow Nurse. Dual Rey sired the finalists Steves Nurse who was tied for fourth and Reys Dual Badger. High Brow Nurse has produced foals that have won over $580,000. Her other money winners include Nurse Grey, winner of $93,188; Reys Highlight, winner of $80,412, and Nurse Mate, winner of $77,860. Twice As Reycy is the dam of Reycy Moon, a winner of $208,207. High Brow Cougar is the sire of horses that have won in excess of $800,000. One of his leading money winners is Montanas Cougar, winner of
$148,501. Dual Rey has now sired foals that have earned in excess of $28 million. He counts among his foals Rockin W, $329,722; Dual Smart Rey, $330,436; Halreyious, $227,459; Reys Dual Badger, $313,563; TR Dual Rey, $353,174, and Dual R Smokin, $219,434. These are all stallions that have entered the stud to produce the next generation in the legacy of Jay Moss. Dual Rey is the grandsire of foals that have earned over $12,million. His sons, Reys Dual Badger, TR Dual Rey, Dual Smart Rey, are already million dollar plus sires of money earners. Dual Rey has made the Jay Moss line a factor in the National Reined Cow Horse Association. His reined cow horse foals include Reymanator, winner of $194,061. His NRCHA money earners have won over $845,000. The daughters of Dual Rey have held their own in the cutting pen. They include Rey Down Sally, $412,181; Reys Desire, $409,851, Special Nu Baby $341,486, and Reyann Hickory, $324,141. The daughters of Dual Rey have produced foals that have won $4,666,114 in cutting, reining and working cow horse. The leading money winners include Reyzin, the winner of $290,448 and the 2013 NCHA Non-Pro Horse of the Year. The Rey Jay Janie branch of the family is making a contribution to the legacy of Jay Moss. Her grandson Hes A Peptospoonful is a $4 million sire with foals like A Spoonful Of Style with earnings of $168,616. Jay Moss is truly a matriarch of a great family of performance horses and will go down in history for many generations to come.

Spiritual Food From Gods Feed Truck Take the Quantum Leap
One of the things that I have noticed in my 30 plus years of training horses is that there is always more to learn. This is actually a great thing! If we ever figured out anything completely here on this earth we would just be bored. It’s the journey that gives us life. The struggles we face are just opportunities to overcome them! I think there are many similarities in living life and learning how to communicate better with horses. Horses seem instinctively to take you to your most vulnerable spot. In this weak spot you face many giants such as doubt and fear; there will always be some sort of discomfort in these spots! These uncomfortable situations will either cause you to get stronger and overcome them or to shrink back in defeat and lead to despair. I have found myself in this spot from time to time and almost everyone who asks me to help them with their horse issues are in that spot. They don't want to be there but don't know how to get out. The way to freedom seems out of reach. One thing is sure: If you keep doing the same thing over and over, discouragement will eventually get you to quit. So what is the solution? It will require a change to get different results and it will require a leap of faith, a quantum leap in your thought process. For those who believe, all things are possible said Paul. He also said we get change in our lives through changing how we think. So what are you thinking? The answer is not where you have been looking. So you have to first stop what is not working. Then pause and breathe deeply and experience the peace that surpasses all understanding. Stop struggling and learn from a reliable source who knows the way to freedom. God gave us our minds to use as a tool to experience his peace. This leap of faith will always require you to look at the situation differently and when you do, doors you didn't know were even there will appear to you, and when you step through, you will experience that ever present peace that can only come from God. fÛã=oÉ~Çó=cçê=kÉï=mêçàÉÅíë> You know what they say, “If you need the job done, give it to a busy man.” The past several months have been quite a whirlwind, as we installed a major irrigation project on my ranch and built a hay barn, all while showing property, writing contracts, and bringing deals to the table. Now the hay is in the barn (or shipped to some grateful horse owners), the center pivots are spraying, and several nice properties have new owners. I’m ready for new projects! How can I help you? Ready to find a hunting ranch or a recreation property? Need some ideas on how to build your irrigation system? Do you have a property that you just need to get off your books? How about an auction? I work the entire state of Colorado, and I’m networked with some of the best farm and ranch brokers in the state. I can find out about a particular property anywhere in Colorado within a day or two, and that’s why I’ve helped buyers and sellers make deals on properties as far-flung as La Junta, Granby, Durango, Steamboat Springs, Telluride, Norwood, Olathe, Montrose, Crawford, Marble, New Castle, and Aspen. United Country has an incredible set of tools to market ranches, resorts, luxury properties, rural businesses, vacant land, homes in town, vineyards and orchards, and mountain land. Our most recent sale was a 447-acre recreation ranch with a conservation easement and limited access. Two appraisers just called me asking if we really sold it for that much or if the selling price was a typo. We’re ready to market and sell a couple more big ranches. I have time for several more buyers looking for that perfect dream home, horse ranch, or resort property. I’ll help you find a property anywhere in the state—I’m familiar with Telluride, Aspen, and Crested Butte as well as farms and ranches all over Colorado. Are you ready for a new project? Call me! Let’s get to work!
