Training the Working Horse Part 2

5 Basics Exercises To Develop a Broke By Al Dunning Hopefully, you read Part 1 of this series in the last issue. If not, here’s a short recap: I talked about how I start the breaking process with patience, getting them saddled, gentled some, and ridden outside. The objective is to get them broke correctly so they become a safe, usable individual that understands his job and allows the rider to shape his future. It’s a long road!

simple as going from the stand still into a walk. As the horse progresses, he should eventually be able to lope off controlled and collected. #2 Turn right and left with equal proficiency. This starts as a simple change of direction and will advance to rolling back, spinning or turning on the cow.

#3 Stop on the hindquarters. I teach my horse to stop and know the word “whoa” at the very beginning when I’m breaking him to a halter. As we progress, he will listen to whoa, learn to stop off a light rein cue, and know when I “quit riding.” Quit riding is a term I use that relates to sitting down, releasing leg pressure, and being still, which should I return to my arena once I am translate as whoa to the horse. This confident that my horse has learned is different from the subtle energy simply to allow me to ride him and guide him. This first part is done in a that I use to ask for forward motion. halter, rope hackamore or smooth #4 Back straight and smoothly. There snaffle. are so many reasons for a horse to Then I will start slowly teaching my back properly with his head in a Five Basics. Here they are and I will slightly flexed position. It adds to his overall control, collection, stop, refer to them throughout his education. Remember that training a rating of speed, and more. I teach my horse in the beginning by riding him horse is no different from educating into the corner of the arena and a child. You start with the basics in asking him to retreat. I use one rein, kindergarten and then advance one grade at a time. Learning the ABC’s then the other, gently, until he determines that the only way out is is important and you never skip a to back, not go right or left. The key letter. Plus, some children, and is to make the hind feet move. The horses, require more time or a front will follow. Pulling hard fouls different approach to understand up the entire process up. When what is being taught. having difficulty, get off and teach him to back better on the ground. The Five Basics #1 Go forward readily. Every horse My original ground driving is usually enough to help him should understand leg cues to ask him to lineout and go. This can be a understand backing. Following the guidelines in Part 1, now you have your horse going forward willingly and have begun steering him to avoid natural obstacles outside the arena. This helps them “find his feet,” while carrying our weight.

#5 Collection. Many riders misunderstand this. They think having a horse’s head tucked in is collection, but that is merely what is termed “frame.” Collection is balancing the horse and riding him from the rear end forward. This is accomplished by teaching him leg control. The skills that assist you to teach him are two-tracking, sidepassing, and moving his body parts individually. A good horse moves straight from his tail to his head, steers easily with leg and rein direction, and keeps his shoulders in-line. With this said, I start slowly and only expect my horse to gain one or two simple advancements on each ride. A young horse can only assimilate so much at a time. It is better to ride him more often than for too long. If you’re having trouble, don’t get him hot or mad. Sometimes, I’ll just tie him up or just bit him up for awhile before trying again. Other times, I will call it a day, think it over, and try again tomorrow. I call this my “manana” method. This isn’t a race. “Wait on them now or you’ll have to wait on them later,” is a memorable quote from noted trainer Don Dodge. Until next time, ride well! Important Stockmen in the Development of the Quarter Horse Breed By Larry Thornton The American Quarter Horse Association spent 2015 celebrating the 75th anniversary of its official beginnings in 1940. The official name of the breed became the American Quarter Horse in 1940, a name that has served the breed well over the years. The American Quarter Horse was known by a number of names before the official beginning including the name “Steeldusts,” after the famous Texas stallion, Steel Dust, that became a foundation sire of this group of horses that could be raced and/or worked on the ranch. The story of Steel Dust is filled with myth and legend. The general story of Steel Dust tells us that he was foaled in either Kentucky or Illinois and brought to Texas by the brothers-in-law Middleton Perry and Jones Greene. These two horsemen settled in Dallas County in Texas where Steel Dust became a legend as a great sire and a racehorse. A big chunk of the Steel Dust influence came through Old Billy, a son of Shiloh. The dam of Old Billy was Ram Cat by Steel Dust. The story of Old Billy recounts that this stallion was tied or chained to a tree while his owner went off to fight the Civil War. The owner, who thought the war would be over in a short time, died in the war and never returned home. William “Billy” Fleming did return from the Civil War and bought the horse that became Old Billy. Fleming crossed Old Billy on the mare Paisiana to produce a number of full brothers and sisters that have played a major role in the formation of the

line of horses known as “Steeldusts” into what became the American Quarter Horse. Concho Colonel, a son of Jim Ned, was purchased by a stockman named Dan Casement. Dan Casement and his son Jack were great proponents of the Steeldust horses. They were in on the ground Sired by Red Dog and foaled at the Unaweep floor of the Ranch, Joker B became an Appaloosa establishment of the Foundation sire with some American Quarter great quarter horse roots. Jim Ned became the property of William Anson, a nobleman from England. Anson came to American to establish the Head of the River Ranch at Christoval, TX. Jim Ned was his foundation sire and this piqued the interest of Anson in the Steel Dust horses. Anson wrote a series of articles on the Steel Dusts and it was these articles that established an early history of this line of horses. A young man named Bob Denhardt saw the articles and heard other stories as he traveled Texas. This led to the groundwork of forming the

Dan Casement was born into a family of workers. His father John Casement was the foreman of the line crew that laid the track for the Union Pacific Railroad between Council Bluffs, IA, and Promontory Summit, UT, after the Civil War. Dan later joined the family business with his father, building a railroad in Costa Rica for six years. John Casement and his brother Daniel were instrumental in developing railroad techniques or procedures that improved the efficiency of building the Union Pacific Railroad. One such improvement was having a herd of Casement Durham and Galloway cattle trail along to provide food for the crew.

Along the way, John found a place in the Colorado Mountains that he thought would be a good place to breed and raise cattle. It was in the Unaweep Canyon on the Uncompaghre Plateau in Colorado. His purchase of this land established the Unaweep Ranch. It was after graduation from Princeton University and then Columbia University with a Masters Degree that Dan went to develop the Unaweep Ranch. The Unaweep Ranch was the formal beginning of Dan Casement as a “stockman.” The life of Dan Casement is showcased in the book “Casement Of Juniata” by Donald Ornfuff. This biography covers the life of Dan Casement and the story of the Unaweep Ranch and his development of his livestock farm named Juniata. Juniata was located at Manhattan, KS, not far from Kansas State University. It was a

registered Herefords and developed feeder calves. Casement became well known at livestock shows for his pens of feeder cattle. He won the 1931 American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City, among other shows. In the beginning he would purchase feeder cattle from other breeders and feed them out. He had great pride in his ability to select and develop these carloads of cattle. His 1931 champions at the American Royal were bred by the Matador Land & Cattle Company. Later he would use the cattle he bred to fill his feeder cattle carloads. Dan Casement saw the need for good horses especially at the Unaweep Ranch. This led him to the Steel

Dust horses and William Anson. The articles by Anson brought them together. Casement bought his foundation stallion Concho Colonel in 1911, who lived out his life at the Unaweep Ranch. Bob Denhardt profiled Concho Colonel in an article in The American Quarter Horse Journal in January 1965 titled “Concho Colonel and Balleymooney” in which Casement described his stallion: “He was a beautiful dappled chestnut, compactly built, smooth and well balanced in shape, with short back, deep barrel, and long belly. Most noticeable was his immense muscular development, which seemed to reach a climax amounting

I subsequently learned that this appearance is characteristic of the Steel Dust strain. Indeed, in some localities Quarter Horses are commonly called ‘Big Jaws’. “For 16 years, until he died at the age of 23, Concho Colonel was a real institution on the Unaweep,” Casement said. “He had all the priceless qualities, both of conformation and character that marked the typical Bull-Dog Quarter Horse. He knew all there was to know about cows and how to handle them. This wisdom and skill he consistently bequeathed to his progeny.”

Sylvan Grove, KS, often referred to as “Old Man” Smiley. Smiley bred a stallion named Little Steve. He was sired by Pony Pete by Barney Owens by Martin’s Cold Deck by Old Billy according to the pedigree reported by Helen Michaelis. Bob Denhardt believed that Pony Pete was sired by Printer by Old Cold Deck, a different Cold Deck. This Cold Deck was sired by a son of Steel Dust. The dam of Little Steve was Cherokee Maid by Martin’s Cold Deck by Old Billy. The Denhardt story says Casement had bought some mares from Charley Walker of Kiowa, CO. One

of those mares was Little Judge by Little Steve. Her dam was Sal by Grey Joe. Some pedigree sources report that Little Judge was bred by Smiley. Walker is listed in the article as the owner of Little Steve at that point in time. Little Judge was the dam of Balleymooney. Balleymooney stood in Kansas most of his life. He was sent to Unaweep in 1932 and died that fall or in the winter of 1933. He did sire one crop of foals on the Unaweep, producing six foals that were registered with the AQHA, including four sons: Red Dog, Frosty, Billy Byrne and The Deuce. These four sons of Balleymooney would be out of mares that came from the famous CS Ranch of Ed Springer in New Mexico. Casement had a partnership with Ed Springer and the CS Ranch. These mares were, as Denhardt put it, Casement’s “share in the partnership.” The sires of these mares were Little Joe or Little Joe Springer. Little Joe Springer was bred on the CS Ranch and he was sired by Old Joe. Old Joe was sired by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. Harmon Baker was owned and used by William Anson. Harmon Baker was crossed on Jim Ned Mares. The dam of Old Joe was a Jim Ned mare. Jack Casement was born in 1907 and he followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from Princeton University and becoming a stockman like his father. Jack got his experience as a stockman working for ranches like the Matador Land and Cattle Company and T. E. Mitchell and Sons. Jack officially became a

rancher when he married and was deeded the title to the Unaweep Ranch. The four sons of Balleymooney were foaled when Jack was running the Unaweep Ranch. The registration applications show that Jack is the breeder of three of them with Dan being the breeder of Frosty. Jack retained Red Dog as a sire for the ranch with The Deuce going to Juniata. Frosty and Billy Byrne were sold. The Deuce went to the Juniata Farm to be Casement’s personal mount and breeding stallion. His dam was Caliope by Little Joe Springer. Dan Casement signed his registration application. The Deuce lived out his life in Kansas. When Dan Casement died in 1953 the estate sold and transferred The Deuce to George Owens of Green, KS, in 1954. The Deuce sired 94 registered foals, four of them being performers, with two earning a performance ROM. The ROM were Stormy Sue Finley and My Amigo. My Amigo earned 21 performance points and two halter points. The AQHA show record for My Amigo shows that he was ROM in cutting. He was shown twice at halter earning a Grand Championship and a Reserve Grand Championship. The Deuce is the maternal grandsire of 15 AQHA performers with 11 point earners with four ROM that earned 104 AQHA points. The leading point earners were Pokey’s Mike with 14 performance points; Gypsy Boy with 13 performance points, and Kingsville with 24 performance points. Kingsville and Gypsy Boy were NCHA money winners. Kingsville was sired by Wimpy II and out of Baby Jane by The Deuce. The dam of Baby Jane was Juniata. This makes Baby Jane a full sister to My Amigo.

Frosty, a son of Balleymooney, was registered after leaving Unaweep. His papers says he was Grand Champion Stallion one year at the Tucson Show in Arizona. Frosty was sold and he was registered when owned by Chick Logan of Santa Barbara, CA. His last owner was Parr Norton of Ashwood,

The American Quarter Horse before 1940 were called “short horses” for their ability to run and win at short distances like the 220-yard match race. OR. Frosty was out of Christina by Old Joe. The registration application for Frosty says Dan Casement owned this mare when she foaled Frosty. She was later owned by Jack Casement. The pedigree for Frosty on the registration application indicates that he had been named the

Grand Champion Stallion one year at the Tucson Show in Arizona. Tucson was one of the top shows during this time period. The sire record of Frosty shows that he sired only 75 registered foals with six performers including two ROM, one in racing and one in the arena. The ROM racehorse was Abel Mabel who is recorded as having a 75 speed index. This means that the mare ran in A time, which was below the AA and AAA ratings. The ROM performance horse was Frosty Norton with two points. The maternal sire record of Frosty shows that his daughters produced 208 foals with 17 point earners. They earned two racing ROM with one stakes place runner and eight performance ROM with one Superior Halter Horse. The stakes placed runner was Outrider. He was second in the Santa Clara Invitational Handicap. He earned $15,142 and ran AAA time to earn his racing

Frosty was the broodmare sire of two AQHA High Point Horses–Baldy Buzz and Pee Wee Buzz. Baldy Buzz was the 1962 AQHA High Point Western Riding Horse and Pee Wee Buzz was the 1963 High Point Western Riding Stallion. They were both sired by Buzz Bomb and out of Momie by Frosty. Smillie. As the story goes, Jack Casement took Red Dog to a race meet. Red Dog was matched in a race with a horse named High Ball. Red Dog had finished third in a 440-yard race that High Ball had won. Smillie says that Red Dog who came to the race meet off the ranch could not stay with the trained racehorses because of the distance. The match race was to be run after the regular meet. The race was to be run at 220 yards. When the race was over, both sides stated they had won. When a decision could not be reached the great Coke Roberds stated that “the Red horse won,” but then said that they should run the race over because both sides still claimed the win. So Roberds, Frankie Burns and Marshal Peavy were picked to be at the finish line to determine the winner of the next race. The race went off but by this time it was dark. Too dark to pick a winner. The owners opted for the dead heat and everybody went to the local bar that night to talk about their racehorse. The idea behind the story is that Red Dog was a “cow horse” but “the racehorses couldn’t outrun him short.” The American Quarter Horse before 1940 were called “short horses” for their ability to run and win at short distances like the 220yard match race. The sire record of Red Dog is much like his paternal half brothers in that they were ranch stallions and like many ranch horses did not get registered. Red Dog had 96 registered foals with 15 performers. He sired one racing ROM in Red Bird. This mare was A rated on the track. He sired four AQHA performance point earners. The

leading point earner was Apple Bee with 19 halter and 26 performance points. Red Dog sired foals that won in halter with all four of his point earners getting points in halter. Geronimo was a halter point earner sired by Red Dog. He was also a race winner but did not earn an ROM. Geronimo was the sire of Bos’n. Bos’n was the sire of horses like the AQHA Champion First Mate who was also a Superior halter horse. Bos’n sired a second Superior halter horse in Saucy Bess. Bos’n was the sire of Becky Lee, the dam of the great PHBA sire Buzzie Bars, the senior sire of AQHA Hall of Fame member Jack Anderson, the 1983 AQHA President. My Baby Doe was a halter point earning daughter of Red Dog. She earned 10 halter points. The full sister to My Baby Doe is Maggie McGee who earned one AQHA halter point. The dam of these two is Molly McGee. Molly McGee was sired by Dundee and out of a daughter of Peter McCue. Molly McGee was bred by the great breeder Coke Roberds, who stood Old Fred and Peter McCue. The Coke Roberds breeding program influenced such great breeders as Marshal Peavy, Warren Shoemaker and Hank Wiescamp, all AQHA Hall of Fame members. The daughters of Red Dog produced 339 foals with 89 performers. These performers earned 17 ROM, five AQHA Championships and three Superior Awards. His daughter My Baby Doe was the dam of eight point earners with seven ROM. Debra Dee and Isle Boogie were Superior halter horses out of My Baby Doe. Debra Dee and Sonny Red Dog were the AQHA Champions out of My Baby Doe. Tadpole was another good son of Red Dog. The dam of Tadpole was

Mae West P-56. Mae West P-56 was another Coke Roberds bred mare. She was sired by Coke T by Brown Dick by Derring Doe (TB). The dam of Coke T was Stockings by Old Fred. The dam of Mae West was a Coke Roberds Mare. One of the daughters of Tadpole was Miss Casey. The dam of Miss Casey was Nedra by Red Dog. Thus Miss Casey had a breeding pattern of 2 X 2 to Red Dog. Miss Casey was the dam of Casey’s Poco. Casey’s Poco was the sire of Casey’s Ladylove. Casey’s Ladylove became the foundation mare for the Frenchman line of horses. They include horses like French Flash Hawk (Bozo), Frenchmans Heyday (Dinero) and Frenchmans Guy. Tadpole was the sire of the mare My Tad. My Tad was a broodmare for Howard Pitzer. She produced such Pitzer bred horses as Dot Pat Star,

Two Eyed Brownie, AQHA Champion. Dot Pat Star produced nine performers that earned six ROM, seven Superior halter horses, one Superior western pleasure horse and one AQHA High Point horse for

Joker B was one of the most versatile horses you will ever see. He was shown at halter, roping, cutting, heading, heeling, bulldogging, barrel racing and pole bending. Pitzer. These foals include the AQHA Champions Denver Jack, Denver Dotty and Two Eyed Denver. The Old Blue Mare is one of the more interesting mares to come into the AQHA and was an even greater influence on the Appaloosa. She was the result of Marshal Peavy’s stallion Bob H being bred to a Roberds Mare by Primero and out of a Roberds Mare by Arab. Arab, an Appaloosa, was the famous circus horse that Coke Roberds used early in his famous breeding program. Some believe that Arab had been used by the famous Barnum & Bailey Circus.

AQHA Champion/Superior halter; My Tad Jack, AQHA Champion, and

The Old Blue Mare was bred to her sire Bob H and she produced Papoose who become a broodmare for Jack Casement. Casement bred Papoose to Red Dog producing the mares Cherokee Maiden and Baboon, a loud colored registered Appaloosa stallion. Cherokee Maiden was shown at halter at the Colorado State Fair at Pueblo where she was first in her class and at the Denver Stock Show where she was

also first in her class. Cherokee Maiden produced eight performers with one performance ROM, three racing ROM and two stakes winners. The performance ROM was Chicaro Maiden. The stakes winners were Alfaretta winner of the Buttons And Bowes Stakes, and Red Wig, winner of the Colorado Lassie Stakes. Both of these stakes winners became AQHA Champions. Alfaretta produced such AAA runners as Alfie’s Folly, Little Chloe, Barbituate, Alfie’s Foilble and Alfie McCue. Her daughter Little Chloe was the 1962 AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly. Little Chloe was sired by Three Bars. Red Dog breeding to Appaloosa mares gave the ApHC two famous foundation sires - Joker B and Cooterville Norell’s Little Red. He was sired by Red Dog and out of Little Buck by Ding Bob by Brown Dick. Little Buck was out of Flossie by Shiek P-11. Flossie was out of the Old Blue Mare. Cooterville Norell’s Little Red was originally named Brown Fox. Brown Fox was shown at the Denver Stock Show where he won the yearling stallion class and was named the Reserve Grand Champion Stallion. Brown Fox became Norell’s Little Red in the AQHA records. Joker B was foaled on the Unaweep Ranch in 1941. He was sired by Red Dog and out of Blue Vitriol. Blue Vitriol was by Brown Dick and out of Leopard by Old Fred and out of a Roberds Mare. Joker B shows us the influence of Arab on the Appaloosa breed. Joker B was an exceptionally versatile horse. He was shown at halter, roping, cutting, heading, heeling, bulldogging, barrel racing and pole bending. Frank Holmes in his book “Spotted Pride” in a chapter dedicated to Joker B reveals that he

was never accepted for registration in the AQHA but was registered in the American Quarter Racing Association. The AQRA was dedicated to racing and they would “identify horses” of all breeds as long as they were racehorses. Holmes also reported that Joker B was raced at Los Alamitos Race Course where at the age of 13 he raced eight times winning six of them. Joker B was even ridden in the movies by Jody McCrea, (son of Joel McCrea) and as a parade horse by Texas Governor John Connally and actor Rickard Boone (Paladin on TV). Joker B sired many Appaloosa Champions becoming a great foundation sire for the modern Appaloosa. The next Casement endeavor came in the mid 1940s when Dan and Bill Coy swapped mares. Coy took Cherokee Maiden and Casement got Jackie McCue. Jackie McCue was sired by Jack McCue and out of Sparky by Spark Plug by Jack McCue. Jackie McCue was a half sister to Sparky Joann, the dam of Coy’s Bonanza. Cherokee Maiden produced Chicaro Maiden, the arena ROM mare by Little Chicaro Bill. Casement bred Jackie McCue to Tadpole by Red Dog and got Little Meow. Little Meow went to the racetrack and got a stakes win in the Centennial Championship in 1951. She earned her ROM and also earned 34 open halter points. Little Meow produced 14 foals with 11 performers that got six ROM on the track and two performance ROM. She produced one stakes winner and two stakes place runners. She is the dam of one foal that earned two AQHA Racing Championships. The Little Meow foals won 104 AQHA halter points and 39 performance points. She is the dam of four AQHA Champions. Her AQHA Champions

Page 32

were Smarty Cat, Old Tom Cat, She Kitty and Wiggle Cat. She Kitty was the racing champion earning the AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Filly and the Racing Champion Three-Year-Old Filly titles. She Kitty would produce only six foals and all six were ROM in racing. She was the dam of one stakes placed runner in Smooth Kitty by Jet Smooth who was second in the Miss Peninsula Handicap and the Peninsula Championship. She Kitty is the dam of Larking Kit. Larking Kit is the dam of Lord Winsalot, an AQHA Racing Champion Two-Year-Old Gelding, and Breakaway Baby. Breakaway Baby is the dam of Texas Hero, an APHA Racing Champion Two-YearOld and leading paint sire of money winning racehorses. Whammy Cat was an AAA rated racehorse out of Little Meow and sired by Three Bars. Whammy Cat is the sire of Blue Whammy Cat. Blue Whammy Cat was the broodmare sire of Just Plain Colonel who earned $41,509 in cutting. He is an all time leading sire of Reined Cow Horses with his foals earning $834,788. His leading money winners include Miss Plain Plain ($80,986), Nicilena ($63,304) and Just Plain Pici ($57,718). Dan and Jack Casement were great proponents of the Steel Dust bred horses that became the American Quarter Horse, a type of horse that was noted as a great cow horse that had the short speed needed to do the job. They took a stand during the formative years that kept the stock horse component alive in the breed through their love of the “Steeldust” horses. Along the way the breed evolved into a more “middle of the road” horse that we see today. They are still the kind of horses that important stockmen Dan and Jack Casement believed in.

Mares With More

Matllock Rose and Stardust Desire, or “Mother” as he called her, riding to a win at the 1966 NCHA Open World Championship in Houston. Ralston Purina Photo by Ed Smyth

Stardust Desire An Accomplished Mare with Matlock Rose in the Saddle By Larry Thornton When the legendary trainer Matlock Rose rode into the arena people sat up and took notice as they were about to see the master show his horse. It didn’t matter what he was showing–a halter horse in the morning or a performance horse in the afternoon–he was the master. Like many people, I was in awe of this man. I had seen and heard so much about him that when I got to meet him, I was speechless. But I had finally met my hero and later this allowed me to talk to him about

many of the good horses he rode in his career. One of those horses was Stardust Desire, our Mare with More for this issue. Matlock trained and showed many horses over the years in a variety of events and this is what made him a master showman. He showed Jessie James by Red to earn the 1951 NCHA Open Reserve World Championship. He showed Do Si Do S by Cotton Mac to an NCHA top ten finish in 1954. He trained George

Dun by Hollywood George who became the AQHA Honor Roll TieDown Roping Horse in 1957 and 1958. He showed Poco Lynn by Poco Bueno who won the AQHA Honor Roll Halter Horse title in 1958. Both of these horses became AQHA Champions in 1957 with Matlock in the saddle. He showed good reining horses like Gay Widow by King P-234, an AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse. His work at Gordon Howell’s place netted the AQHA Champions Bert Leo and Leo

San Van, both sons of Leo San. This list of horses is strong proof that Matlock Rose was always mounted on good horses that represented a variety of bloodlines. When Matlock rode Stardust Desire or “Mother” as he called her, to the 1966 NCHA Open World Championship, it was his first NCHA world championship. He won four more Open World Championships with Peppy San, Pappy’s Desire and Peponita. All of these horses are associated with the working relationship of Matlock Rose and the Douglas Lake Cattle Company.

Ten at fifth place in 1965 and they won the NCHA Open Finals in 1964 and 1965 with her World Championship coming in 1966. She earned $36,770.81 while holding the Certificate of Ability, the NCHA Bronze and the NCHA Silver Awards. She is in the NCHA Hall of

real pretty mare. She was 14.3 hands and had a pretty neck on her and a good head. A real breedy kind of mare. One of the strongest mares I’ve ever ridden. A mare that had a lot of cow and desire. She was a real nice mare.” Before she won her World Championship, Matlock told Duane Valentry, “She is without a doubt the best and most consistent mare I have ever ridden. She works equally well in both large and small arenas and on any kind of cattle. The only thing to consider when deciding where to show a horse that is this dependable is the size of the purse.

Stardust Desire was one of those horses that came out of the woodwork to become a champion. She had a very modest beginning, but her talent as a cutting horse bloomed with Matlock Rose in the saddle. Stardust Desire was bred by Jack Lawrence of Fredricksburg, TX. She was foaled in 1958. Duane Valentry in the story “Stardust Desire” in the June 1966 issue of Western Horseman talks about her owners. She was sold to Loyd Jinkens as a yearling. Jinkens sold her to Leslie Geddes and then she was sold to Amye Gamblin at the age of three. Gamblin, a trainer and former partner with Matlock Rose, had started her as a two-year-old. Gamblin traded her for 100 cows and calves to G. H. Sanders. Sanders sold her to Ken Bissett who sold her to George Tyler and Matlock Rose, who were partners in the horse business at the time. Her last owner was C. N. “Chunky” Woodward of the Douglas Lake Cattle Company of British Columbia, Canada. Matlock and Stardust Desire were a hit from the beginning. She was the 1964 and 1965 North Texas Cutting Horse Association High Point Horse. They were in the NCHA Open Top

Matlock Rose and Stardust Desire with their 1966 NCHA World Championship awards. Fame. Her AQHA record shows that she earned 237 AQHA performance points with a Superior in cutting. She had one halter point earning a Reserve Grand Championship the only time she was shown at halter. This is how Matlock described Stardust Desire in 1989, “She was a

Page 50

“Stardust likes to be left alone. She knows her job and does not want anyone to school her or try to restrain her,” he added. When Stardust Desire was purchased by Chunky Woodward, she was going to the home of Peppy San. This is the horse Matlock rode to

win the Reserve Championship of the first NCHA Futurity in 1962. Gordon Howell, the breeder of Peppy San, had hired Matlock to be his ranch manager and head trainer. Howell stood Leo San, the sire of Peppy San, and he had purchased Peppy Belle, the dam of Peppy San on the advice of Matlock. Matlock recalled how Peppy San’s move to Canada came about: “Don Dodge had Mr. Woodward for a customer and he wanted me to go to Barney Skipper’s place in Longview and look at a horse. This was after Barney Skipper had passed away.” (Barney Skipper died in a plane crash in October 1962 and the Skipper Estate Quarter Horses were dispersed in the spring of 1963.) “So I did what he asked me to do and I drove to Longview and looked at the horse he wanted me to look at. This horse was real bad in front, real crooked in front. So I went to the pay phone and called Don. I told him I wouldn’t recommend buying him for a breeding horse. “I got back home and Don calls me back wanting to know if I knew where there was a really nice horse,” Matlock continued. “So I told him

Bonita Tivio was a well-traveled mare, going to England to tour with Woodward as part of a group of Canadians demonstrating what cutting was all about. about Peppy San. Mr. Howell was talking about having a sale. So I talked to him and he consented to sell Peppy San prior to the sale.” So Peppy San went to Canada.

When Matlock was working for the World Championship on Stardust Desire in 1966, he talked to Woodward about showing Peppy San in the open World Championship. So in 1967 Matlock Rose and Peppy San earned another World Championship with Matlock going back-to-back for this important title. The sad part of the story of Stardust Desire is that she died shortly after producing her second foal. She was in the pasture when she was spooked at night and ran into a dead snag puncturing her chest. She left behind Peppy’s Desire and Chunky’s Monkey. One of the mares in the pasture with Stardust Desire when she died was Bonita Tivio. This daughter of Poco Tivio was shown by Don Dodge and then purchased by Woodward as his personal mount. Bonita Tivio would become the foster mother for Chunky’s Monkey. Bonita Tivio was a well-traveled mare, going to England to tour with

Woodward as part of a group of Canadians demonstrating what cutting was all about. She is also part of this story as the dam of Matlock’s two time NCHA Open World Champion Peponita by Peppy San. The pedigree pattern of the Peppy San/Stardust Desire mating has an interesting tie between the two horses. Stardust Desire was sired by Stardust Red. This unshown stallion was sired by the King Ranch bred Macanudo Jr. Macanudo Jr was sired by Macanudo, one of the great sons of Old Sorrel used in the King Ranch breeding program. Old Sorrel was sired by Hickory Bill by Peter McCue. The dam of Old Sorrel was the Dr. Rose Mare, whose pedigree is unknown. Macanudo was out of Canales Belle by Roan Clegg by Hickory Bill. The dam of Canales Belle was Pelicana by Texas Chief by Traveler. Macanudo sired a number of show horses, including Babe Mac C, an AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse. Babe Mac C is the sire

of the outstanding show gelding Buster Cole, an AQHA Champion and Superior halter horse. Dee Gee’s Star was another AQHA Champion sired by Macanudo. She is the dam of Aggie Dee Mac. Aggie Dee Mac was the dam of the AQHA High Point Halter Horse Wimpy Leo San by Leo San. He was bred by Gordon Howell. Wimpy Leo is another son of Aggie Dee Mac. Wimpy Leo is the sire of Forty Seven who was the broodmare sire of the great Wimpys Little Step, an NRHA $7 million sire and NRHA Futurity Champion. The dam of Macanudo Jr was Laurelena by Little Richard. Little Richard was sired by Old Sorrel and out of a mare by Lucky Mose, a thoroughbred. The dam of Laurelena was a mare by Pancho Villa. Little Richard is best known as the sire of Peppy P-212. Peppy was a very successful show horse for the King Ranch. He was Grand Champion Quarter Horse Stallion at the Fort Worth Stock Show in 1940. This was

the year before the King Ranch-bred Wimpy earned AQHA #1 in the new Stud Book after winning the Grand Championship at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The dam of Stardust Red was Old Ida Red by Tip. Tip was reported to be sired by Jazz by Harmon Baker by Peter McCue. Another interesting tie between horses shown by Matlock and certain bloodlines is evidenced in Tip, sired by Jazz, a paternal half brother to Red the sire of Jessie James, the horse that Matlock rode to the 1951 NCHA Open Reserve World Championship. Tip was out of a Noelke mare by Major Domo. The dam of Old Ida Red was Pauline by Hoover Horse by Buckles. Pauline, or Pauline Carson as she is listed in the AQHA Computer Records, was out of a Carson Mare and the pedigree of this mare is unknown. The dam of Stardust Desire was Mos Enero Flos. Mos Enero Flos was

Page 52

sired by Enero by Jack Pot. The dam of Enero was Tinker by Joe Bailey P-4. Tinker was out of Ulrich’s Nellie. The dam of Mos Enero Flos was Wardlaw’s Flossy by Ruby Davis Horse. Some sources say the Ruby Davis Horse was sired by Dogie Beasley. The dam of the Ruby Davis Horse was a Holman mare. Wardlaw’s Flossy was out of Miss Holman, pedigree unknown. Peppy San was sired by Leo San. Leo San was a son of Leo. Leo was sired by Joe Reed II and out of Little Fanny. Joe Reed II and Little Fanny were sired by Joe Reed P-3. The dam of Leo San was San Sue Darks by San Siemon. San Siemon was sired by Zantanon and out of Panita by Possum. The sire of Zantanon was Little Joe. Little Joe was a full brother to Possum. The dam of San Sue Darks was Little Sue. Little Sue was sired by Sam Watkins by Hickory Bill. The dam of Little Sue was Sorrel Perez by Chaquiz and Sorrel Perez was out of a mare by Chaquiz.

The presence of Macanudo in the pedigree of Matlock’s four World Champions... is interesting in another way. Other horses ridden by Matlock also have Macanudo influence. The dam of Peppy San was Peppy Belle. Peppy Belle was out of Belle Burnett by Gold Rush. The dam of Belle Burnett was Triangle Lady 9 by Red Buck. The dam of Triangle Lady 9 was a Burnett Ranch mare.

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • February/March 2016

Peppy Belle was sired by Pep Up by Macanudo. The dam of Pep Up was Petra R2. This mare was sired by Little Richard. This makes Macanudo Jr and Pep Up threequarters brothers. Both sired by Macanudo and out of daughters of Little Richard. Thus Macanudo Jr and Pep Up are collateral relatives. Collateral relatives are full brothers and sisters or three-quarters brothers and sisters found in the same pedigree. This is a collateral line breeding pattern found in the foals of Peppy San and Stardust Desire. The presence of Macanudo in the pedigree of Matlock’s four World Champions (Startdust Desire, Peppy San, Peppy’s Desire and Peponita) is interesting in another way. Other horses ridden by Matlock also have Macanudo influence. He rode Do Si Do S to an NCHA top ten finish. She was sired by Cotton Mac by Macanudo. Gay Widow, the great halter and reining mare, is another

one with Macanudo connections. The dam of Gay Widow was Happy Gal by Graves Peeler, a full brother to Pep Up by Macanudo. There are even more connections. Carol Ramsey won her first NCHA Non-Pro World Championship in 1967 with Gay Bar‘s Gen by Gay Bar King. She married Matlock Rose and as Carol Rose she earned two more Non-Pro World Championships with Gay Bar’s Gen. Sam Rose, son of Matlock Rose, earned an NCHA Non-Pro Reserve World Championship in 1971 with the help of Gay Bar’s Gen. It isn’t often a mare will make an impact as a broodmare without producing several foals. Stardust Desire would produce only two foals in Peppys Desire and Chunky’s Monkey and they would hold their own in the arena. Chunky’s Monkey started his career

as a finalist in the 1973 NCHA Futurity. He came back to win the 1974 NCHA Open Derby. He landed in the NCHA Top Ten with Matlock in the saddle and was fourth in both the NCHA Open and Non-Pro finals in 1975. Chunky’s Monkey replaced his sire on the Douglas Lake Cattle Company when Peppy San was brought to the U.S. to stand with Matlock Rose. Chunky’s Monkey sired 166 foals with only 30 performers. His NCHA money winners earned $280,236. His leading money winner was Monkey’s Formula, winner of $162,125. Monkey’s Formula was the 1986 NCHA Open Champion Gelding and he finished third in the NCHA Open Top Ten in 1987. Peppy’s Desire became a noted cutter, both the NCHA Open and Non-Pro World Champion in 1975. Carol Rose rode Peppy’s Desire to the top of the Non-Pro Division for the year. This gave Carol her fourth NCHA Non-Pro World Championship. Matlock showed her in the open to be the Open World Champion and the World Champion Open Mare. Peppy’s Desire earned $49,233.61 in the NCHA and she was ROM with 48 cutting points in the AQHA. Peppy’s Desire joined the broodmare band to produce ten foals with six point earners with three ROM and two Superior performers. Her foals earned 162.5 AQHA points and they earned $47,886.56 in the NCHA.

Macanudo was the son of Old Sorrel that they thought looked more like his sire than any other son. He figures prominently in the pedigree of the Matlock Rose World Champions. Photo courtesy The AQHA Hall of Fame and Museum

The first two foals out of Peppy’s Desire were Peppy Par by Zan Parr Bar and Real Doc by Genuine Doc. Peppy Par earned an ROM in cutting with 19 points. He was an AQHA World Show junior cutting finalist. Real Doc earned his ROM and a Superior in cutting in the AQHA with 68 performance points. He won both the junior cutting and the senior

cutting at the Fort Worth Stock Show. He earned his Certificate of Ability with NCHA earnings of $17,718.17. A major part of the legacy of Stardust Desire comes through her granddaughter Genuine Desire. This 1981 daughter of Genuine Doc and out of Peppy’s Desire earned $11,367.99 with a Superior in cutting in the AQHA with 68 performance points. She is the dam of 12 performers with 12 point and/or money earners. She is the dam of five AQHA point earners that have earned 927 points. The money earners generated winnings totaling $636,688 in cutting, reining and reined cow horse. The mating of Genuine Doc and Peppy’s Desire brings us back to the influence of Macanudo. Genuine Doc was out of Gay Bar’s Gen, who was out of Gay Widow. Gay Widow was out of Happy Gal by Graves Peeler, the full brother to Pep Up, the sire of Peppy Belle, dam of Peppy San. The first foal out of Genuine Desire was Real Dashing by Miss N Cash. This 1988 gelding was the 1994 AQHA World Champion Heeling Horse. He has a Superior in Heeling. He earned 241 AQHA performance points in the open, amateur, youth and novice divisions. The second foal out of Genuine Desire is Zans Diamond Desire. She is sired by Zans Diamond Sun. This mare is an AQHA Performance Champion with Superiors in tiedown roping, heading and heeling. She was the 1999 AQHA World Champion Senior Tie-Down Roping Horse. She earned 357.5 performance points. The third foal out of Genuine Desire is Desire Some Freckles by Freckles Playboy. This mare is the 2001 NCHA Open Classic/Challenge Page 54

Champion. She earned $188,990 in her cutting career. She is the dam of foals that have won over $1 million in performance events. She is the dam of Desire Little Rex by Smart Little Lena, an NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. Some of her other money winners include Thundercat ($305,599); Desires Katrina ($135,273); Desires Kitty Cat ($64,364), Desires Nu Cadillac ($58,923); Desirable And Catty ($28,169), and Desires Champion Cat ($27,072)--all sired by High Brow Cat. More money earners out of Desire Some Freckles include Desires Rey (X Dual Rey) winner of $33,969; Desires Smoothie (X Smooth As A Cat) winner of $35,001; Desires Wendell (X High Brow CD) winner of $25,503, and Desires One Time Ruby (X One Time Pepto) ($38,058). Adding Smart Little Lena and High Brow Cat to the mix reveals more of the Matlock Rose and Macanudo influence on our modern

performance horse. Smart Little Lena was out of Smart Peppy by Peppy San giving him a tie to Macanudo. An added note: The dam of Smart Peppy was Royal Smart by Royal King. Royal Smart was purchased by Matlock from Earl Albin, the owner of Royal King for $800. As mentioned above, Stardust Desire was out of Moss Enero Flos by Enero. Enero was sired by Jack Pot. The dam of Royal Smart was Moss’s Jackie Tobin who was out of Miss Jack Pot XI by Jack Pot. High Brow Cat was out of Smart Little Kitty by Smart Little Lena. The dam of Smart Little Kitty was Doc’s Kitty, a daughter of Doc Bar that was an NCHA Open Futurity Reserve Champion. The dam of Doc’s Kitty was Kitty Buck, who was out of Miss Peppy D. Miss Peppy D was sired by Pep Up by Macanudo. The 1957 AQHA High Point Halter

Horse was Hank’s Sue by Hank H. This mare was owned by the Phillips Ranch in 1957 while Matlock was the head trainer and manager for Phillips. She was sold to Gordon Howell in late 1957 and in 1962 she produced Leo San Hank by Leo San. Leo San Hank sired Grulla San, the dam of High Brow Hickory the sire of High Brow Cat. The next Genuine Desire foal to note is Desire A Chic by Smart Chic Olena. This 1996 mare is an AQHA Superior Heading and Heeling Horse. She earned 197.5 performance points. She is the dam of Nic N Chics winner of $22,240 in the NRCHA, who also has 164.5 AQHA performance points, and Kickback Nic, with $49,626 in earnings in the NRCHA. Playguns Desire is a 1997 daughter of Genuine Desire that is sired by Playgun. She earned $124,352 in the NCHA. She is the dam of horses that have won $638,954 including Reys Desire, the winner of $393,765 in the NCHA. Reys Desire is a full sister to Desire Rey, an NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Finalist. Both of these horses were sired by Dual Rey. Desire A Lil Pepto is sired by Sweet Lil Pepto and out of Playguns Desire. This horse has won $210,720. Some other Playguns

Desire foals include Everyones Desire (X Smart Little Lena), winner of $27,915, and Hearts Desire Me (X Bet On Me 498), winner of $26,462. A Genuine Playgun is another full sister to Playguns Desire and she has earnings of $60,616 in the NCHA. She is the dam of My Genuine Cat who has 110.5 AQHA points. Shepards Star is also a full brother to Playguns Desire. He has earned $41,104 in the NRHA and $4,972 in the NRCHA. He has 114.5 AQHA points with a Superior in Reining. He was the 2012 AQHA High Point Senior Reining Horse. Other money earners out of Genuine Desire are EBR Kitty Hawk (X High Brow Cat), winner of $102,114.46; Genuine Bet (X Bet On Me 498), winner of $62,540, and Cats Desire (X High Brow Cat) winner of 27,268. A Playboys Desire is an unshown daughter of Genuine Desire that is sired by Freckles Playboy. This mare is the dam of Gabreyella by Dual Rey. Gabreyella has won $86,113 in the NCHA. She is also the dam of Desire Some Blues by Mecom Blue. This horse has won $37,866 in the NCHA. A Real Desire, a 1985 daughter of Genuine Doc and Peppy’s Desire,

WORKING HORSE MAGAZINE • February/March 2016

has earned $5,883 in the NCHA. Her leading money winner is PPH A Real Playgun by Playgun. This gelding has earned $21,855 in the NCHA. Real Desire 287 is an unshown daughter of Genuine Doc and Peppy’s Desire. This mare is the dam of A Ginuwine Jazz by Hickoryote. She won $72,301 in the NCHA. A Genuwine Jazz is the dam of Red Hi Heelz by Metallic Cat. This mare has won $30,085 in the NCHA. Ginuwine Desire, by Dual Jazz and out of Real Desire 287, is the dam of Ginuwine Cat by Cats Merada, and she won $18,021 in the NCHA. Desire A Lena is a daughter of Doc O’Lena and Peppy’s Desire. She is an NCHA money earner. She is the dam of several performers and her leading point earner is Desire Some Shine by Shining Spark. This horse has earned 107 AQHA points in the open, amateur and youth divisions. The modest beginning for Stardust Desire gave way to an NCHA Hall of Fame career with the master in the saddle. Her life as a broodmare was cut short in the wilds of British Columbia, but with Malock Rose and Carol Rose riding her two foals she lived on in the arena. She now lives on through the foals of Peppy’s Desire and her offspring. Matlock would be proud that Stardust Desire (Mother) is living on as one of our Mares With More.
