Energy Investigation Service June 2017
Energy Investigation Service June 2017
How much energy do you throw away out-of-hours? When the last person out at night turns off the lights how many of us are lulled into a false sense of security into thinking that the energy consumption of their offices or factory also switches off for the night? Epsilon offer a 7-day energy investigation service that identifies out-of-hours electricity consumption for individual buildings, services such as air-conditioning or even an entire site such as a factory or a University. An analysis on the logged data shall be carried out by a Chartered Energy Manager and a detailed report shall be produced which identifies the amount of wasted energy presently being paid for during non-productive hours.

The chart reprinted below illustrates an example of one of our energy loggers monitoring the air-conditioning consumption on one floor of a six-storey head office building for a pharmaceuticals company in North London. The blue rectangle highlights the electricity consumption between 7pm and 6am and reveals that nearly 300 kWh was being consumed by the air-conditioning system for maintaining a set point temperature of 19.0 degrees despite the building being unoccupied. By extrapolating the result by the number of non-working hours per year the estimated wasted energy amounted to a staggering £16,640 per year and that was on just one floor level. Further investigation revealed that the timer function on the air-conditioning local controllers appeared to have never been properly setup since they were installed.

Occupancy sensors may be retrofitted to automatically switch off the air-conditioning when no people are present. Intelligent devices like these can help to make an even bigger dent in energy bills. “Why cool air when there’s noone there?” The findings of the energy investigation showed that significant improvement in energy performance can often be achieved with little or sometimes no capital outlay being required.
