SPRING 2014
ASIS NEWSLETTER OF THE YEAR – WINNER 2012, 2008 & 2003 – HONOURABLE MENTION 2011, 2006.
FREE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
Details will be out shortly, but the plan is for a full day’s educational content (say 10:00—16:00) that, excluding breaks, will enable you to claim 5 hours of CPE points, although it is not possible to pre-award points as the ASIS scheme is audited, rigorously, in accordance with ISO/IEC 17024 which, as we all know, is the standard for personnel certification programmes. Attending one of these will mean you should have a quarter of your points for the year. If you then attend a couple of the main meetings, help out on the stand at IFSEC or Counter Terror you probably have three quarters of your CPE points. As licensees of the Register of Chartered Security Professionals, we will also open these days out to all CSyPs, whether or not they are ASIS members. If spaces remain after that, we will open these events to ASIS members who are not CPPs etc.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES
Chairman’s notes
Welcome to the January 2014 edition of the ASIS UK Chapter Newsletter.
The first thing that I have to do is pay tribute to the exceptional leadership, hard work and commitment of my predecessor Mike Alexander. To say that I have a hard act to follow is the understatement of the decade. Under his leadership, Chapter 208 has gone from strength to strength and has ensured that ASIS is once again, rightly recognised as the only truly international security management membership organisation, operating in the UK.
the committee and to ensure that the membership of the Chapter, really get their monies’ worth.
Secondly, and no less importantly, I would like to pay tribute to the Officers of the Chapter, Vice Chairmen Mike Hurst and Graham Bassett and Treasurer Craig Pickard, who give up a huge amount of their working lives to keep the Chapter running. Considering that each of these guys is running their own businesses, the time and effort that they put into the Chapter is incredible and the fact that they have volunteered to continue in these roles, under my chairmanship is a huge relief. Thank you all.
Unfortunate as this is, the leadership of ASIS have previously managed to avoid any membership fee increases for 10 years. Whatever your view of the rights and wrongs of that policy, the fact is that the running costs of ASIS have increased year on year and this increase has become unavoidable and at approximately £10 per month, I think it continues to offer exceptional value for money.
Thirdly, I can’t thank Jude Awdry enough. As Executive Officer of the Chapter, Jude wears about seven different hats and has to keep half a dozen plates spinning, while somehow managing to keep all of us in line, at the right place and at the right time. We simply couldn’t do it without her. Lastly, I would like to thank my colleagues on the Chapter Committee, who also give their time freely for the benefit of the Chapter and its members. These men and women from all walks of life, each bring an enormous amount to the running of the Chapter, undertaking projects and tasks at the request of
On the subject of money, you will all have noticed that the annual membership fee has risen substantially this year to $195, which represents an increase of approximately 30%.
Andy Williams
I have no desire or plans to change the Chapter or what we do on a whim, but if something needs changing, I will make sure that we do. As such, I am keen to hear from you. Your views, concerns and wishes, are hugely important to me. If you have any comments or suggestions, please feel free to write to me at chairman@asis.org.uk and I will endeavour to reply to you as soon as possible. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Andy Andy Williams CPP – Chairman

208 UPDATE
208 UPDATE – MIKE HURST, VICE CHAIRMAN, STRATEGY you know anyone in this position please let us know. Nigel Flower CPP was originally a member of Chapter 44 and served on both that committee and on the subsequent UK Chapter (208) for well over 20 years. Nigel has now stepped down from the committee and was presented with a cut glass decanter and glasses, by Graham Bassett. Following a long, distinguished military career Nigel worked in corporate security and later as a security consultant and has made a huge contribution to the life of the Chapter. He was also instrumental in setting up the Association of Security Consultants. The AGM was again a well attended event and an eventful one. After four years as Chapter Chairman, Mike Alexander BEM stood down and Andy Williams CPP was elected. Graham Bassett (Vice Chairman— Operations), Craig Pickard (Treasurer and I were all re-elected for another year. I must echo Andy’s earlier comments about Mike’s term in office and add my personal thanks for his leadership and dedication and I am sure Andy will build on Mike’s achievements and take us to even greater success. At the AGM there were a number of presentations. Andy Williams
presented Don Randall MBE with the Chapter’s Mervyn David Award for his services and support both to the Chapter and to the wider security profession. Mervyn was a previous, highly respected Chapter Chairman. Also Mike Alexander presented his former RM comrade John Gilliland with his Chapter Veteran certificate. This is presented to any security professional (ASIS member or not) who retires from the profession but who wishes to maintain some links and entitles the holder to attend ASIS UK Chapter meetings at a reduced rate. This initiative was introduced by Mike Alexander and if
The AGM also featured presentations by Grant White from International Hotels Group, Dr Mark Button from Portsmouth University’s Institute of Criminal Justice Studies and Tim Williams from security intelligence firm, Stirling Assynt. The event was again sponsored by Esoteric Ltd and our thanks go to them. The AGM element of the day was run by former Chapter Chairman and now Chapter Life Vice President Derek Webster, who recalls bouncing Andy on his knee as a young boy. Not a random act, I should add - Derek and Andy’s father served together in the Met. Craig’s Treasurer’s Report showed that the Chapter is in a sound financial health. Roll on 2014. Mike

PHYSICAL IDENTITY
PHYSICAL IDENTITY AND ACCESS MANAGEMENT DR VIBHOR GUPTA Enhance Security, Reduce Cost and Comply through policy based customisable, scalable and interoperable Physical Identity and Access Management Physical Security administrators are continually looking to optimise and automate processes around their fundamental duty which is to determine who has access to where, why, how and when. Such processes involve determination of different people (employees, contractors, sub-contractors and visitors) and their physical access needs (access card, access rights) in line with security policies and other regulations.
Current Scenarios and Challenges Traditionally, these processes are managed manually and involve large number of people and disparate systems or databases, for example identity management systems (IDMS), contractor management systems, watch-list databases, training databases and physical access control systems (PACS). The mandatory nature of these processes requires a regular exchange of information between these disparate systems which takes the form of emails, faxes, telephone calls as opposed to being streamlined and policy-driven (automated) for the entirety of a process. Such a manual exchange of data and information coupled with its scale and volume increase the risk of errors and the time taken to audit these activities thereby leading to a higher probability of breaching physical security policies. These challenges are further compounded by the periodic need for upgrading incumbent systems and customised technologies, both of which demand higher costs and time. This is particularly true for organisations which have gone
6
SPRING
2014
through a merger and acquisition activity or similar.
Physical Identity and Access Management (PIAM) To reduce these risks and maintain business continuity, organisations desire a solution where they are able to manage processes and data through a single system which integrates with their PACS, IDMS/HR system and other databases. This solution is also known as Physical Identity and Access Management (PIAM) since it allows management of identities and access privileges across an organisation – who's who and who can go where and when. Through the capability of PIAM solutions, physical security administrators are able to automate several processes which are traditionally conducted manually and therefore eliminate the risk and reduce associated costs and time. For example: On-boarding of new employees is controlled through a defined process within a PIAM solution which ensures that as soon as an identity is created in the HR system, it is provisioned in the PACS and given all necessary access which it deserves by default (role based access provisioning) Off-boarding of existing employees is automated which means that as soon as an employee’s contract finishes, the physical security administrators can be assured that all access (regardless of the number of PACS) is de-provisioned Policies and processes around Audit, Attestation and measurement of compliance are pre-configured which allows them to be scheduled and accessible through one user interface Reporting of KPIs and measurement against SLAs of physical security departments becomes a one-click process
Metrics such as Building utilisation and Badge usage levels are identifiable through a single dashboard view
Build-vs-Buy? Physical Identity and Access Management (PIAM) solution is essential for organisations that need to protect their systems, applications, and data from unauthorised physical access. However, it is usually viewed as a complex area consisting of various policies, procedures, activities, and technologies that require the coordination of many functions and groups within the company. And hence the organisation looking to secure their facilities and infrastructure faces the same question – should the solution be custom built or based upon commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) products? The traditional ways of managing physical security are based on legacy systems. The cost to maintain hardware and software for these old legacy systems coupled with the additional expense of integrating these with the newer systems pose a serious risk for the organisations. The challenge is to implement a system that can be incrementally deployed, without disrupting current business processes.
This challenge is overcome by a COTS solution which offers the following benefits: Easy to deploy and manage - COTS solution vendors have efficient system and processes already in place to deploy and manage the solution. The vendor offers customised application that fits most mandatory requirements thereby making deployment and management of COTS application easy Flexible, highly configurable and
www.asis.org.uk
PHYSICAL IDENTITY
scalable – COTS solutions provide flexible customisation options and the scalability that meet an organisation’s needs—now and into the future. COTS products are designed in a manner to meet growing levels of user requests and transaction loads with real-time and event-driven solution Cost effective to maintain over the longer term – As the expertise and core competence of the vendor is leveraged, it becomes easy and cost-effective to maintain the application over a longer time Cost can be easily quantified – The pricing of the project is set before the beginning of the project. Hence any kind of pricing risks and uncertainty can be passed to the vendor. Therefore it is easy to quantify the cost in the beginning of the project itself Low total cost of ownership – A comprehensive COTS solution will reduce cost by automating and standardising functions, optimising processes and by fast implementation and deployment. As a result, it’ll drastically reduce the

total cost of ownership
Summary and Conclusion As awareness grows of the advantages of Physical Identity and Access Management COTS solutions, an increasing number of organisations are planning to implement it. Organisations of all types, including global Fortune 500 enterprises, some of the world’s largest airports, leading government institutions have turned their investment in such a solution and achieved the following:
Proactive reporting which enabled efficient measurement of compliance against internal and industry regulations. Early notice allowed organisations to take necessary actions and avoid undue consequences Secured the organisation’s investment over a long term since an integrated platform provided a single user interface for view and management of all data, processes and policies.
Lower cost of ownership compared to a system built in-house Eliminated the risk to business continuity when upgrading PACS and IDMS since integration with both old and new systems facilitated the migration process Realised a tangible return on investment (ROI) through automation of current manual and broken processes around management of different people and their access needs across disparate PACS

EUROPEAN SECURITY ACADEMY
EUROPEAN SECURITY ACADEMY JOOP VERDONK CPP ‘mature’ in our profession while preparing for the ASIS programs.
It is my honour to introduce European Security Academy and myself to you. My name is Joop Verdonk CPP and I am the owner/ managing director of European Security Academy, which was instituted in 2000 under the name Security College.
To optimally assist professional candidates we developed the socalled Review Courses. This program consists of two days ‘guiding candidates’ through all the exam material, followed by one or two coaching days after a few months’ study. During the coaching days candidates present assigned topics to their fellow students. This approach proves to be successful while candidates are both guided for their study efforts as well as for understanding topics. The program is concluded with an exam-training day, the day prior to the actual exam. We usually take approximately 5-6 months from the start of the Review Course until the actual exam. This method has been rather successful over the years
keep up the pace and digest the large quantity of information is the most important factor for success. We differentiate two types of training. The ‘open training’ comprises candidates from different companies. We favour this type of training because of the ‘networking & knowledge sharing’ advantages. We execute this open training at the Priory of Corsendonk in Belgium (not far from Eindhoven Airport or Brussels Airport) As an alternative we offer ‘residential’ or ‘in-company’ courses for a group of candidates who prefer to have the course at their own premises. We are able to execute these courses at any suitable location. In this case we send two or more certified and experienced moderators over to the candidates instead of asking the students to come to Corsendonk.
I started my professional career as an officer in the Royal Netherlands Marine Corps. During my career I also served a term with 42 Cdo RM in Bickleigh Barracks, Lympstone. After having served as an officer for twelve years I joined Amsterdam Airport Schiphol as Commanding Officer Airport Police and later on as Manager Corporate Security. In 1982 I joined ASIS International. At this moment I serve as volunteer chairman of the Educational Subcommittee of the European Advisory Committee of ASIS International. European Security Academy holds the official license of ASIS International to assist candidates in preparing for the ASIS Board Certification Programs (CPP, PSP & PCI) since 2001. We hold a similar license from IFPO International and coach students preparing for their Certification Programs (BPO, CPO & CSSM). Over the years we developed our ‘stepping stone model’ that we successfully use to assist candidates entering the ‘security market’ through the IFPO programs. We also coach those who are more

Beside the professional experience, involvement and drive of our moderators, the European Security Academy success is based on understanding and stimulating candidates to hold up discipline during their study. Since the launch of our certification program in 2000, we conducted courses in Denmark, Austria, Russia, Spain, France, Singapore and China. For more information please visit our website www.europeansecurityacademy.eu or send an email to us: info@europeansecurityacademy.eu

ASIS WOMEN IN SECURITY
Hello, I would like to introduce myself - I’m Dawn Holmes CPP and I’m the new lead for the ASIS UK Chapter’s Women in Security group. Being both a “woman” and “working in security” it has been pointed out to me that I’m perfect for this position!
boss! He was dismissive, openly said that women can’t be managers and did nothing but hold me back. It was easy for me to dismiss this clown (he was quite stupid!), but if I had not left that role, he would have held me and my career back.
Initially, I had mixed feelings about the Women in Society Group; I didn’t want it to be involved in something that was merely for appearances/just a token gesture. As I’m so used to just pushing up my sleeves and working with the fellas, ignoring the fact that we are different sexes, just getting on with our jobs, I wondered if it was not a bit cheesy to have this kind of group. But then I started to think about my own career.
I started to think, if I would have had this awful manager at the start of my career, would I have progressed as I have, or even stayed in the industry? I also know that I’m quite headstrong, don’t always take ‘no’ for an answer and push for what I believe in. Would someone not quite so bolshy as me have been able to withstand this rubbish manager? It was this thinking that made me realise that a Women in Security group is still relevant and that, whilst it was needed, I had a responsibility to have an input into it to ensure it is not just a token gesture and that it helped people who may be stuck in a place that was holding them back, giving them the tools to get out/move up/do whatever they wanted to do.
When I started in security over 12 years ago, I had the most amazing boss. He found and sent me on training courses that most civilians didn’t get to go on, shared ideas, was never precious with knowledge or worried that I will try to steal his job/or that I would be wasting his time as I will just go off and have babies! I think he just revelled in finding someone who was as passionate about security as he was: he was (and still is) the epitome of what a mentor should be. I have since then had a really awful boss - the polar opposite of my super
www.asis.org.uk www.asis.org.uk
The meetings that I have had with my fellow ASIS committee members have also supported my feelings regarding the group and (strangely) we all are looking forward to the day that this kind of group isn’t needed. But until then, I will
strive to support the team members of the WIS group, ensuring that if it is education and that being able to hold up an amazing CV that is the thing that gives someone the confidence to go for that higher job, we are there to help. If it is networking opportunities or a support structure of like-minded people who are open to advise and help, we are there. I’m looking forward to supporting a group of people who are happy to get involved, as passionate about this industry as I am, who feel that as long as you work hard and have the desire, you can go as far as you want and are willing to support others who feel the same way. I look forward to meeting you all at the coming ASIS events and if anyone has any ideas, comments etc, please do not hesitate to contact me. Dawn

Member News ASIS UK member, Prof Martin Gill who, in recent years, has Chaired the ASIS Research Council has been asked to sit on the ASIS Foundation Board for 2014 and 2015. He will still be a member of the Research Council and Mary Lynn Garcia will take over as Chair. Martin noted: 'I am delighted and honoured to be invited to serve as a Trustee on the ASIS Foundation
Board. I have been associated with its work for many years and I look forward to helping it to achieve its aims which are charitable in nature'. Martin hopes to attend the volunteer meeting in Washington in January. The UK Chapter committee would like to congratulate Martin on his appointment and on the support he has offered ASIS for many years.
ASIS ON THE ROAD Following on from the activities in 2013, ASIS UK will be out and about at various UK shows and exhibitions this year.
The other reason is to give CPPs, PSPs and PCIs the opportunity to earn CPE points towards their recertification. However, whether or not you are Board Certified, we are a volunteer led organisation and if
you can spend an hour or two helping out at one of these shows (or others that will occur during the year) please let us know. It helps us and provides the volunteers with excellent networking opportunities.
Currently, we will have exhibition stands at • Counter Terror Expo • IFSEC • Security Technology Live • Security Twenty 14 (all three events) • Total Security Summit (both events) • Transport Security Expo Additionally we will have a presence at other events. We attend these events to raise the profile of ASIS International, and the UK Chapter; promote the ASIS Board Certified Qualifications (CPP, PSP and PCI); encourage new membership applications; promote attendance at UK and international events and give ASIS members who are attending these events a focal point to meet colleagues.

ASIS
Don’t Forget ASIS International is INTERNATIONAL Among the first things that you’ll read on the ASIS International website is this: “ASIS International is the preeminent organization for security professionals, with more than 38,000 members worldwide.” Certainly one of the most compelling benefits of joining ASIS for me, was the international membership reach, the network of fellow professionals and a scale of international coverage that no other security management organisation can match.
during my visit. Not only did Daniel meet me, but he brought along several members of his Chapter Committee. Over the dinner and drinks that followed, I was able to extend my professional network and make new friends with fellow professionals from many business sectors and international origins. During my conversation with Daniel we agreed to develop and maintain a close working relationship between our two chapters and invited him to join us, should the opportunity arise at a future meeting. There are many commercial similarities between Hong Kong and London
and although it ceased to be a British colony in 1997, the links between our two nations remain very strong and clear for all to see. My advice to any member travelling overseas for business is to make contact with the local chapters first; not only will you have a point of reference, should you need help, but you may even get treated to dinner and a few beers. Just remember that you will have to reciprocate when they come here!
Andy Williams CPP
I have no better evidence of this, if any were needed, than on a business trip to Hong Kong in November. About a week before travelling, I searched the membership directory area on the website for a contact in Hong Kong who could help me with a few questions. Within a couple of minutes I found the contact details for Chapter Chairman Daniel Chui. Less than 10 minutes after emailing him, he had replied with the answers to my questions and we set a date and time to meet

Counter Terror Expo 29-30 April 2014, Olympia, London is the only dedicated international forum delivering over 9,500 buyers and specifiers from the entire security sector within Government, Military, Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Private Sector and the Security Services. The event is the perfect platform to see and showcase the most comprehensive display of technology, equipment and services designed to protect nations, borders, crowded places, critical national infrastructure, companies, assets and individuals from the threat of terrorist attack. The event has grown year-on-year to become the largest international counter terrorism and security event of its kind. CTX 2013 saw a 9% increase in the number of attendees to the show and that pattern of growth is expected to continue into 2014 when some 9500+ visitors, 400+ exhibitors and 350+ VIP and international delegations are expected to attend. Key audience groups who attendees will get to meet and network with include Border Control, Emergency Services, Intelligence Agencies, MOD/Military, Police, Security Companies, Transport Security and Security Services. Key to the success of Counter

Terror Expo has been the event’s responsiveness to the ever evolving nature of terrorism. Last year, the Counter Terror Expo organisers, Clarion Events, introduced new Feature Zones to the exhibition in order to highlight the best products, systems and solutions available to meet emerging threats in specific areas of the counter terrorism and security arena. For 2014, to reflect the evolving international security threat, five new zones are being added. Border Security Zone and Access Control Zone In response to the increasing pressures on international borders and the growing risks to largescale sensitive sites, this zone will feature the very latest developments, from new physical infrastructure components to the most advanced biometric, screening and scanning technologies. Integrated Security in Action sponsored by Synectics The integration of technology allows for a more complete picture of security breaches, incidents and disturbances, enabling law enforcement agencies and security teams to modify their responses in line with changing security needs.
