ACTORS HEADSHOT SESSIONS FOR ACTORS

All Sessions: We collaborate by doing live reviews during the session so you can see which expressions and angles are working best, plus you have the opportunity to review your hair and clothing. By collaborating this way, you let me know what you like in the images as we progress so we’re sure to highlight your best features and when you leave the session you come away knowing exactly what will be delivered. Make-up is a great option for women, but not mandatory. When you opt for make-up, plan to arrive between 1-1/2 and 2 hours prior to your session time. All these detail are confirmed when you book. You have the option of purchasing as many files as you like, it’s all explained in the Investment section. Most of all, we have a great time. Headshot sessions are by appointment only at my Lake Alice Studio in Fall City, Washington. Call Mike at 425.260.4033 or email mike@mikenakamuraphotography.com

Experiences "When shooting actors' head shots, Mike has the eye to capture the real person that will later bring a character to LIFE! His simple yet energized approach gets the Casting Directors' attention from a thumbnail sized photo online. I appreciate his attention to detail and love my shots!" Debbie "Working with Mike was an absolute pleasure. I went him to take headshots for acting, and the photos turned out incredible. Today's headshot reality Being reduced to an onscreen thumbnail is even less glamorous than the comp card. Standing out on a computer screen of faces is more likely if your headshot is tight. Full length and 3/4 shots are great for elsewhere in your portfolio; however, keep your headshot close in. Creating new headshots also helps your agent since it is current and reminds her or him that you are a professional investing in your career. Remember that your agent can only present what you provide. Perhaps a casting director has seen your old photograph, but is looking for the current you. Whenever you change your look significantly, update your headshot. There are different opinions about the subtleties of what makes a great headshot; however, all agree that you want to stand out in a positive way and when you do arrive for the audition, you look like your photograph. Discuss the concerns or ideas you have with your photographer. Always use a photographer with whom you are comfortable.

A few of my headshot recommendations follow Always shoot with the camera even with your mouth or nose. Don't let someone shoot down on you. A high camera angle always implies a difference in power between the viewer and the subject. Maintain an equal footing with the viewer. A double chin? Use good photography techniques and coaching to eliminate it, not a high camera position. Avoid the "deer in the headlights" look. I know your eyes are beautiful. They are even more gorgeous when they compliment your confidence. Does your current headshot feature the cool lighting the photographer setup? Your headshot is about you, not a big hair or kicker light. Slight separation from the background can be useful to show facial structure; however your face should be what pulls the viewer to you. When someone sees your headshot, do they say, "Wow, cool wall, cool car, cool tree, or cool anything but you"? There is a place for environmental portraiture, however, we're creating a headshot that gets you in front of the CD. Let's do the portrait another time.

Tips and FAQ Rest up the evening before you come in for your session and be prepared just as you would be for any other business meeting. Be hydrated. Regarding makeup, we're going for the natural you, not a glamour shot. We'll take care of blemishes and other issues. For hair, don't tie it back to avoid any creases. We may have you pull it back during the session and want to start with you hair in its natural form. Have a selection of clothes so we can work together to find the best outfit for you. This all about you so anything that takes eyes off of you is to be avoided. Avoid big jewelry, busy patterns, frilly necklines, and flat collars. Few people look good in skin-tone clothing. When possible, bring you clothes in a hanger bag to keep it as fresh as possible. Since we are typically creating several looks, bring a variety of clothes to tell several different stories.

Tips and FAQ continued Glasses: If you have several sets, bring them. If you can, have the lenses removed on at least one favorite pair. We work with and around glasses so we’ll still get it done; however, we have more options with the lenses removed. Retouching or digital airbrushing is done on images unless you purchase the "All selected high resolution jpgs from session (not retouched)" option. Don't worry; you'll look like yourself after retouching. We are showcasing the real you and, yes we do offer a bit of help, the casting director will recognize you. Hey, what about the top of my head? We capture the top of your head; however we usually crop it off. Remember the saying, "The top of your head is the window into the soul." I don't either; however, I do like a compelling look into your eyes. Especially in our "thumbnail" world where your profile photograph is about an inch tall, we suggest a tight crop.
