In that time, this quartet has been named one of the top five “must see” groups in America, has been awarded numerous original song and album awards in pop, gospel and holiday genres, appeared on NBC’s Today Show and in the pages of Newsweek magazine. Outings with Jay Leno, Shawn Colvin, and Garrison Keillor have propelled album sales to more than 2,000,000 copies (mostly sold from the back of their trailer!) and have earned the group thousands of intensely loyal fans. By 2000, the quartet was voted into the Midwest Music Hall of Fame. In 2002, Tonic Sol-fa averaged over 150 shows annually in 48 states. 2007 brought the group’s music to

avigating the college entrance process for parents with High School aged students has become more and more complex. This has created a greater need for help with College Planning and all of the steps involved. Many families need a personal coach who will provide an action-plan for each step in the college selection and application process. This will not only help guide the families as to what is best for their student but will also help reduce the overall cost of college education. COMMON COSTLY MISTAKES PARENTS MAKE ABOUT THE COLLEGE PROCESS 1. A ssume they won’t be eligible for financial aid because they make too much money. 2. A ssume only minority students, athletes, and academically gifted students get financial aid. 3. P ick colleges and universities without paying attention to where their student compares to the rest of the student body and assume all schools are created equal and will be able to give them the same amount of money. 4. D o not understand the difference between “includable assets” and “non-includable assets” and have the mentality of, “It doesn’t matter where I keep my money; it’s all counted in the same way.” 5. G o through the college admissions and financial aid process by themselves because it’s “cheaper.”

ocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM) located in Parker, Colo., has distinguished itself in numerous ways since it brought in its first class in 2008. One of its distinctions includes its innovative approach and commitment to educating students to serve their country as physicians in the armed forces. RVUCOM has the highest percentage of students on military scholarship of any civilian medical school in the country. Nearly 20% of the graduating Class of 2014 entered military residency programs. The University is a designated Military Friendly School and also has a special military track for students participating in the Armed Force’s Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP). What makes the RVUCOM program truly unique is the use of immersion training which exposes students to real life situations. As Anthony LaPorta, MD, course director of RVUCOM’s military medicine track and retired Army Colonel explains, “Our goal is to make the last simulation no worse than the first true experience our military students encounter in real life situations. We want a seamless transition between practice drills and the care of patients”. RVUCOM students have participated in numerous simulated drills. One of the simulated scenarios involved a Blackhawk helicopter landing on the campus transporting critically wounded troops from the battlefield who were rushed into the makeshift ER where RVUCOM

students performed surgery and other lifesaving procedures. RVU was also the first medical school in the country to use Cut Suit technology to train students. The Cut Suit is a human-worn surgical simulator developed in collaboration with the military to improve training in tactical combat casualty. The Suit contains breakable and repairable skin, bones and internal organs and can replicate numerous wounds, hemorrhages, airway difficulties, and other medical complications. Last May, 21 RVU students traveled to San Diego to participate in a first of its kind week-long intensive skills immersion training event at Strategic Operations on the lot of Stu Segall Production TV/film studio. The students were joined by visiting surgeons and physicians, as well as surgical and ER residents and staff from Balboa Naval Hospital. During the drills, students had to react to numerous trauma situations resulting from overturned cars, active shooters, and improvised explosive devices. Rocky Vista University’s Institute of Surgical Simulation has recently received accreditation by the American College of Surgeons. RVU is the only medical school in the state to receive this distinction and only one out of two schools in the entire Mountain West Region. RVU will host a Military Appreciation Ceremony and Reception on Friday, September 26 to honor its future military physicians and other military dignitaries who will be in attendance. The next large scale simulation will occur on the Rocky Vista University campus on October 15 as numerous emergency agencies will come together for an active shooter drill. v

BOOKENDS Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris
David Sedaris shares essays about his life in this humorous book. Using his funny stories, Sedaris takes readers through his life experiences. The author shares about his life in Paris and his attempt to learn to speak French, his family (especially his father), and many other areas in his life. ***Warning*** This book contains adult language and content. PAM: Becky, this book came highly recommended when I asked around about a funny book. I had never read anything by this author and was interested to see what all the “fuss” was about! I enjoyed the way the book was organized into different short stories. Did you like this arrangement? BECKY: I don’t usually like short stories but in this case it was a good format for this collection of memories from the author’s life. It has great reviews and is a favorite among many readers. What did you think about this unique book? PAM: I was looking forward to reading a “laugh out loud” book after hearing various reviews. However, although some parts of the book were funny, it didn’t tickle my funny bone as much as others’. Did you find this book hilarious or simply amusing? BECKY: I have to go with the later description. There were a few funny chapters that gave me a chuckle. For example, in one chapter he discusses his IQ and I did laugh out loud. Some of the topics were odd, for example a whole chapter on poop was just not something that I find humor in. However, the reviews disagree with us and many people find his style amusing. He is an accomplished author with a number of books. Would you give him and his writing style a second chance? PAM: I believe I will try to keep an open mind and give this author a second chance. There are simply too many reviews that contradict my first impression! I agree that there were portions of the book that I could relate to more than others and that those sections proved to be much more amusing. What is your verdict, Becky? Would you read another book by this author? BECKY: Memoirs are not my favorite genre and his sense of humor is different than mine, so it is highly unlikely that I would purchase another book by this author. However, I like his unique view of situations so I would be interested in a traditional novel if that became available. I did a little research on this author and found that David Sedaris has an interesting employment history, everything from house cleaning to stints on National Public Radio. Do you think his humor would have a better connection for us if we could hear his voice and inflections?

PAM: What a great question, Becky! I do think that makes a huge difference in making a connection with a story or the author. Where do you plan to take us next? BECKY: We are going to Mexico! The Distance Between Us by Reyna Grande is a memoir of a little girl and her siblings that is left with unloving grandparents while her parents pursued the American dream. Her father left for California when she was two and now two years later her mother is going to join him in America. This is a story of those that are left behind.v

LOCAL AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT Flight Risk by Duane L. Gentner
E
dmund Floyd had always enjoyed local small airplane flying – when he could afford it. Now, the Great War in Europe was about to offer him all the flying he could handle. Using a bit of ingenuity, he works his way into the Lafayette Flying Corps in France, but as a drive – not as a pilot. His approach is “one step at a time.” Through dogged persistence and diligent observation, he manages to get checked out in one of the squadron’s Spad XIIIs. It’s more airplane than he has ever flown, but he’s convinced it is what he is meant to do. Can he meet the demands of flying and fighting against what appears to be a superior enemy force? Duane Gentner also enjoyed flying – when he could afford it. After spending his entire adult working life with a major U.S. airline, he decided to write a novel just to see if he could do it. The result was “Flight Risk,” published in 2010. Duane’s current writing endeavor deals with Alzheimer’s disease. His beloved wife of 56 years lost her six and a half year battle with Alzheimer’s in December 2013. Duane’s approach is to describe how Carole and he dealt with the many unexpected situations they encountered as the disease gradually took over her life. He will relate his observations of the effects of Alzheimer’s on dozens of people with whom they came in contact during their years together at home and then during Carole’s final two and a half years living in an assisted-living facility.
