BOOKENDS A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
Ove is a grumpy man that has a strict routine and believes that rules should be followed at all times. His day begins around 6:00am as he makes his daily “neighborhood inspection” to make sure that there has not been a burglery or some sort of vandalism during the night. His quiet routine is interupted one day as new neighbors move in. They are loud, have two chatty children and backed their trailer (which is not allowed in this area) over his flowerbed and knocked down his mailbox. How will he learn to live with the neighbors that he has now labeled, “The Lanky One” and “The Pregnant One”.
BECKY: I was walking around the bookstore after enjoying Bill Murray’s recent movie, St. Vincent. I loved the character that he played and Ove sounds like he could be related to that cantakerous man so I couldn’t let this novel pass me by. Was Ove a character that you enjoyed or did you find him to be too negative to embrace? PAM: He was definitely a negative fellow, but I could not help but love his character. The author switches from the present to the past and back again as he tells the story of Ove. Ove’s grumpiness begins to make sense as his past comes to light. We also get acquainted with people in his life as we delve into his past. Did it take you a while to warm up to Ove? BECKY: Not for me because his personality reminds me of a few grumps that I know (and love) so I quickly became emotionaly tied to the welfare of this quirqy fellow. Ove is recently forced into retirement at a young age of 59. He was financially fine but I think that he feels useless and the days are filled with too many memories of the past. Do you think that this is a common problem for retirees or did Ove choose the isolation? PAM: I think he initially chose the isolation, as he preferred to be alone with his wife. However, this became a burden over time. I imagine this is a common problem for retirees, especially if they do not live near family. His new neighbor, “The Pregnant One,” continues to force her way into Ove’s life. I loved this character, did you?
FEBRUARY 2015
BECKY: Very much so! She was a bundle of energy and joy. Although not normally the type of person Ove would want to spend time with, she was able to break through his hard shell and see the beauty in Ove. There is another relationship that I truly enjoyed in this story. Ove and his wife were friends with a couple in the neighborhood, Rune and Anita. Ove had a falling out with Rune years ago so they are not currently on friendly terms. What did you think about this storyline? PAM: I thought it was a sad part of the story. However, it did help explain Ove, the type of person he was, and how he led his life. Although this part of his history was sad, the author wove this into the present time very well and it truly enhanced the story. This part of the story also brings the neighbors together and helps solidify some interesting friendships! Didn’t you love the whole group from the neighborhood? BECKY: Absolutely! It was an eclectic jigsaw puzzle and they all had a unique roll in making this story work. As much as I hate to say goodbye to Ove we need to move on. Where will your March pick take us? PAM: We will explore the story, “The Hundred Foot Journey” by Richard C. Morais in March. 11 SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE

The Expatriates Book One: Song of the Sending By Corinne O’Flynn
J
im Wales can communicate with animals, but that’s not why he lives with a traveling carnival. Turns out his family’s been hiding him there since he was little, since someone started hunting all the scholars. Jim is a scholar—someone who can manipulate energy using magic—and he has no idea. When a message arrives from Jim’s father—who supposedly died twelve years ago—Jim’s whereabouts are discovered, their carnival is attacked, and his mother is kidnapped. On the run with a strange glass map and a single coin, Jim finds himself racing to reclaim the father he thought he’d lost, plotting to save his mother, and discovering the truth about who he is. But going home isn’t the same as being safe, and trust is everything.
