DAYS FESTIVAL JUNE 11-14, 2015
Parker Days includes 3 and ½ days of fun with carnival rides, concerts, booth vendors, delicious festival food, and street performers with fun for all ages conveniently located just down the road in downtown Parker. This year includes a Kick off Concert with Rick Springfield on Thursday, June 11. This new concert night is a ticketed event with general admission for $35 and $100 for VIP tickets. Thursday night also includes the opening of the carnival. Along Mainstreet you will find free streets performers – playing saxophone, guitar or violin, dancing, Wooly the Mammoth Mascot, clowns, jugglers and the chance to learn how to stilt walk. The carnival opens at 5:00 p.m.

Starting at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, the streets will be filled with booths, food vendors selling fried snickers, delicious funnel cakes, and turkey legs. The carnival is open and there are three stages of FREE Entertainment all weekend long.
The PACE Stage on Pikes Peak will feature free music all weekend with comedian Jolly Demis on Friday at 9:00 p.m. and comedian Sam Adams on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. This area also includes backyard games to play, patio tables and chairs for easy listening, and beer mixing and wine slushies.

The Community Stage, presented by Parker Adventist Hospital, will feature our talented Parker residents as they sing, dance and act on the stage. At night, put your food in the car...not your tent. Critters love a midnight snack and you don’t want them waking you up to eat. CASTLEWOOD CANYON
Conveniently located right here in Douglas County, Castlewood Canyon boasts some of the best nature watching around. A great number critters and birds populate the area and can easily be seen on your family hike. In addition, Castlewood has a variety of trail types ranging from mild paved walking trails to moderately technical trails. If you are feeling adventurous, Castlewood also has rock climbing available with skills areas for beginners to advanced. cpw.state. co.us
CHATFIELD STATE PARK
Just up the road is Chatfield State Park. Known for its reservoir, Chatfield also has awesome hiking and paved trails that include biking, hiking and even horseback riding. In addition, Chatfield also boasts an really cool RC Plane
airport for those remote controlled plane enthusiasts. The trail system at Chatfield also connects to other systems so you can reach it completely on trails, if you are one of those super long runner or biker types. cpw.state.co.us
ROXBOROUGH STATE PARK Tucked at the base of the foothills is a beautiful display of red rock formations and vast amounts of wildlife known as Roxborough State Park. Definitely worth the drive, Roxborough has a wide variety of hiking trails for all skill levels. WATERTON CANYON
If you are a dirt hiker or off road biker, then you won’t want to miss Waterton Canyon. Located on the west side of Douglas County, Waterton has a great six mile dirt road that goes up the canyon and is perfect for your hike or ride. If you want to get more technical, many more advanced trails connect that will offer great challenges while you take in the ample wildlife of the area. cpw. state.co.us
HIDDEN MESA OPEN SPACE AND TRAIL
Ride or hike this 1224-acre open space buffer between Castle Rock and Franktown. Embark on this softsurface trail from the trailhead at the old homestead at Parker Road. Follow the farm lane as it crosses over Cherry Creek and then winds up to the top of the mesa where it loops around viewpoints, rock outcroppings, grass and shrublands, as well as pines and junipers. douglas.co.us

BOOKENDS The Pearl That Broke Its Shell by Nadia Hashimi
This story will follow the lives of two Afghani women that live during different centuries. The book begins in 2007 and we meet young Rahima. Her mother and sisters all tiptoe around her drug addicted father. She rarely attends school or is allowed to leave the house because there is not a brother to chaperone her or her sisters. Adopting an old custom called bacha posh will allow her to dress and live life as a boy until she is of marriageable age. This lifestyle that will grant her a great deal more freedom is not new to the family. A century earlier her great-great grandmother, Shekiba also lived as a bacha posh. Shekiba has a face that was beautiful on one side and the other is horribly scarred. She was orphaned at a young age and had an equally difficult existence in this harsh Afghanistan life. They both have amazing courage and persistence while suffering unnecessary abuse. BECKY: A dear friend recommended this book so I bought it without giving it much thought. Once I began to read I was taken on a journey that stirred a number of emotions. The abuse and lack of value that these women endure is hard for my American mind to comprehend. Did you struggle with this topic as well? PAM: Definitely! This topic was very difficult to process. Although we have read other books about this culture, this story took us deeper into the challenges that the women face. We were exposed to a variety of situations in different families that painted a thorough picture of the daily lives of the women. Becky, I also went through many emotions while reading this story. Was one emotion strongest for you while getting to know these characters? BECKY: There is one scene that was very powerful for me that created a deep sadness that existed during the rest of the read. It gave me chills to read about 13 year old Rahima being sold to a forty-something year old man. After the marriage Rahima is crying and being pulled from her mother’s arms. This man had no regard for the type of home his daughters would go to and in one day he had sold all three. It was like they were animals at auction. In this story the new families, specifically the mothers-in-law, were also unkind and abusive. Were you surprised that the women in the households were hateful to each other instead of creating their own support system?

PAM: I was surprised (and saddened) that it appeared to be the norm in the different families. The women were in such a hostile environment that they were hopeful to secure some preferential treatment from their husband and his family. Women had no power in their husbands’ homes. Do you feel that this led to women jostling for power within the ranks of the other women (which often led to unkindness and abuse)? BECKY: Absolutely. The older wives were threatened by the youthful new brides and certainly let them know who was in charge. The new wife was not selected for love. It was a simple arrangement that fulfilled a need that the man had. None the less, the other wives and mothers-in-law leveraged their position of power and were terribly unkind to the incoming ladies. I would have expected them to form a friendship or some type of bond. Shekiba lived as a bacha posh and guarded the king’s harem for a period of time. Do you think that environment was as hostile? 11 SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE
PAM: The women that were chosen (or given) to guard the king’s harem had some freedoms that other women never would. They were able to walk around without a male escort and were free of the many chores that were traditionally assigned to women. Unfortunately, we see that this environment was not fully free from the deceit that was common in other homes. While working as a guard, Shekiba is unwillingly caught up in a situation with one of the ladies of the harem. This situation, again, highlights the few freedoms of the women and their roles among the men. How did this awful situation change Shekiba and her view of her life, in your opinion? BECKY: I think that guarding the harem was a comfortable position for Shekiba and she had a sense of belonging to a ‘family’. Unfortunately, she was a pawn in a devious event and the course of her life was once again altered. Unable to defend herself she is once again abandoned. I think that Shekiba was deeply hurt by this event but she continued to battle this unfair life and moved on to yet another challenging situation. The book often mentions naseeb, what destiny God has in store. Most of the woman embrace that the hardships they endure are their naseeb. Do you believe in destiny? PAM: What a good (but challenging) question! I do believe that certain things are meant to be. I also believe that hardships are an opportunity for us to grow in some way. We aren’t able to see why things happen at the time (and we may never know), but I do believe that there is a purpose. We often have the ability to make choices based on difficult events in our lives. However, these women did not. They were expected to accept these hardships, with no questions. Did you find this aspect of the story challenging to embrace? BECKY: Absolutely, it is hard to understand what it would be like to have no ability to stand up for yourself or voice a simple opinion. However, if you were raised in that environment, then maybe it is easier to accept. If you like The Kite Runner than you would like this story as well. It is a bittersweet story that gives us a glimpse into a world that is much different than ours. As much as I hate to say goodbye to these two women, it is time to move on to another story. What will we be reading next month? PAM: Next month we will discuss “When I Found You,” a book about unconditional love and finding support where you least expect it.
