From the Publisher SEPTEMBER 2015
have been blessed to experience some pretty amazing things in my “almost” 42 years of life. Some of these experiences were planned and full of explosive excitement while others just happened…but made a lasting mark on me as a person. From marrying my high school sweetheart to watching both of my sons being born to owning several businesses to holding elected office…life has a way of presenting us with experiences which are more valuable than anything you could hold in your hands.
I
A few months ago I received a request from Inspire Creative (inspirecreative. org) to play a small role in West Side Story. To be honest, I didn’t even know what the story of West Side Story was and I had never acted in my life. However, I’m always game for helping a local community group especially when it comes to promoting arts and culture. I said “yes” and figured I could wing whatever they put at me. Several weeks went by and I went to my first rehearsal. Keep in mind, the entire cast (over 40) had already been rehearsing for weeks and I wasn’t quite sure what I would be in for. I would be lying if I didn’t say I was quite nervous. I ran through many emotions that first night…would I mess up… would I fail all these actors and actresses…would they accept me or view me as an “outsider”…what was I doing! What I found that night, and throughout the 4 weeks of participation, is that I

was in for a life changing experience. Not only did I gain respect for a level of talent I had no idea existed in theater, but I saw, first hand, how these various professions come together and form a family for the sole purpose of spreading entertainment and joy to audiences. As I got to meet many of the cast members I learned of their “stories”, why they perform, what they do in the rest of their lives (trust me…acting does not pay the bills), what are their hopes, what are their dreams. I met a group of people that I am proud to call my friends. These friends accepted me and helped me push the boundaries of my comfort zone. They didn’t judge me for my lack of experience, but rather lifted me up so I could experience a new adventure. As a result, I was able to enjoy a life changing experience and will hold on to those memories for the rest of my life. This leads me to my “from the publisher” letter. I would like to challenge each of you to do something new… something different… something uncomfortable. Don’t wait for someone to lead you there, instead jump right in with both feet. To quote one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 6 rules of success, “Don’t be afraid to fail.” It is only when we push ourselves beyond what we consider comfortable that we can experience something truly epic. Please share these experiences with me and your friends. Most of all, relish the new experiences you will gain when you become uncomfortable.

NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S
GALA!
By Nanci Marr
O
n Friday, September 25, 2015, at 6 p.m., the Douglas County Libraries (DCL) Foundation will host its inaugural “Fête des Fables” gala at the beautiful Highlands Ranch Mansion, transporting ticketholders into the world of “Little Red Riding Hood.” Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf may be watching from the upper windows as guests arrive at the Big Bad Bash, to enjoy scrumptious appetizers and a signature beverage from Three Tomatoes Catering.
SEPTEMBER 2015
“We’re very excited to have such an amazing venue for this event in the Highlands Ranch Mansion,” said Elaine McCain, DCL’s donor relations specialist. “We have some fabulous silent auction items, and the food will be fun as well as delicious.” Attendees are encouraged to arrive in costume, in the spirit of the evening. In addition to other entertainment— perhaps visits from beloved characters?—Colorado authors will join diners at their tables. Author guests will include Cynthia Swanson (“The Bookseller”), Eleanor Brown (“The Weird Sisters”), Mario Acevedo (“Jailbait Zombie”), Jeanne Stein (“Blood Bond”), and Theresa 9 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE
Alan (“Spa Vacation”). One lucky silent auction bidder will win the opportunity to have his or her name (or any name they choose) included as a character in an upcoming novel by C. J. Box, a New York Times bestselling author several times over (“Badlands,” “Stone Cold”). “Taste of Tactics,” a three-hour tactical firearms training session for four, is another great item up for silent auction courtesy of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. “Our guests will leave knowing that their libraries will continue to be great places for young and old, and having enjoyed a memorable journey into a favorite childhood tale,” said McCain. She may be reached at 720.348.9509 or emccain@dclibraries.org for further information. Event proceeds will support the DCL Foundation and Douglas County Libraries’ mission to be a passionate advocate for literacy and lifelong learning. Tickets are $100 per person, and are available at DouglasCountyLibraries. org/Foundation/Events. The Foundation hopes to continue Fête des Fables annually, with a different storybook theme each year. Next year? Perhaps “Goldilocks and the Three Bears!”

What Makes Downtown Parker Great? ART!

ame your favorite authentic downtown destinations, whether small or large, and they likely all have one thing in common – art. Whether it’s Cloud Gate (the giant reflective bean) in Chicago, Canyon Road Arts District in Santa Fe, Broadway in New York, or the myriad of festivals in Telluride, art is an essential part of a vital downtown. Luckily, downtown Parker is rich in art, and it’s getting more creative by the minute. Increasingly, public art heralds your arrival downtown. Take a walk along Mainstreet, from 20-Mile House on the west side of Parker Road to Pine Drive on the
east, and you’ll encounter a stagecoach, an owl, a boy reading a book, Dr. Heath, horses, a dolphin, and many more. Some of the pieces are part of the annual Douglas County Art Encounters Program. Vote for your favorite Art Encounters sculpture at www.douglas.co.us/ artencounters/vote4art/ and the Town might purchase it. That’s what happened with the beautiful dancing cranes in front of the historic schoolhouse. There are more art galleries in downtown Parker, too. They include the studio of award-winning western artist Jay Moore at Victorian Peaks, the professionally curated Bellco gallery at the PACE Center, and numerous

Singin’Comes IntoThe Rain the PACE Center S
ingin’ In The Rain has all the makings of a Tinseltown tabloid headline the starlet, the leading man and a love affair that could change lives and make or break careers! It’s 1927, and in silent movies, Don Lockwood and Lina Lamont are a hot item. But behind the scenes, things aren’t always as they appear on the big screen! Meanwhile, Lina’s squeaky voice might be the end of her career in “talking pictures” without the help of a talented young actress to do the talking and singing for her. Hilarious situations and snappy dialogue are a sure bet in this humorous Hollywood parody. Based on the classic MGM film starring Gene Kelly, this show has all of the unforgettable songs like “Fit As A Fiddle,” “Good Morning,” and of course the splashy title number, “Singin’ In The Rain!”

Parker Arts and Inspire Creative are co-producing this award-winning screen play, set to debut at the PACE Center on September 25th. They promise to cleverly meld the art-deco-inspired sets and stylized costumes of the 1920’s, with the toe-tapping choreography and witty dialogue from the 1950’s. To top it off, they’ve rounded up amazing local and regional talent and utilized modern technology (complete with an actual onstage rainstorm!) to ensure this production lives up to its claim as the “Greatest Movie Musical of All Time.” Singin’ In The Rain is forecasted to be a hit with any fan of the golden age of movie musicals.

BOOKENDS The Sound of Glass by Karen White
Merritt Heyward packs up and moves to Beaufort, South Carolina after receiving news that she is the new owner of her deceased husband’s family home. She is struggling to deal with Cal’s tragic death and feels the need to try and learn of his unknown past. As she is dealing with this unfamiliar place, she is surprised by the arrival of her estranged stepmother and 10 year old half-brother. Merritt must navigate these new relationships, while trying to heal and overcome her own past. PAM: I always enjoy Karen White’s books, and this was no different. I was drawn into the story from the very first page and was eager to follow the many story lines. Did you find yourself pulled into this story, as well? BECKY: I too enjoyed this tale. It has a little mystery, some romance and an adorable southern charm that is similar to Steel Magnolias. Merritt and Loralee are the main characters. Merritt is a bit frumpy and wants to be left alone; and then we have Loralee who is a bubbly lady rarely without her high heels and lipstick. Did I mention that Loralee is only five years older than Merritt? What did you think about these two roommates that are clearly the female odd couple? PAM: Loralee is very warm and caring. I felt connected to her from the beginning and hoped she could crack Merritt’s tough shell. These two ladies are having a tug-of-war. While one is determined to become close, the other is equally resolved to keep distance. Merritt’s father and Loralee were very happily married, although the difference in age seems to suggest a different scenario in Merritt’s mind. Do you think Merritt’s struggle was the age difference or was it the feeling that she wasn’t valued by her father? BECKY: The age difference certainly brought a unique perspective to the situation but Merritt was definitely more wounded by the lack of devotion from her father. She has quite a bit of emotional baggage and that was just one brick in her protective wall. The more disturbing part of the book, for me, was the physical and emotional violence that is peppered through this story. Do you agree that although most of the scenes are not horribly graphic, the author painted a clear picture?
SEPTEMBER 2015
PAM: The author painted a very clear picture of the violence, as well as the fear that accompanied it, without being extremely graphic. One of the goals Loralee had was to uncover the determined and confident girl that Merritt had once been. Do you think that Merritt realized how much she had changed from that person, through the many tragedies and challenges in her life? BECKY: I think it was gradual and she withdrew from her former self without comprehending that she was becoming someone different. Her focus was to avoid giving her husband a reason to become angry with her and during that process she lost her self-confidence. It’s unfortunate that she didn’t have Loralee’s support and influence during her tumultuous marriage. Loralee wrote down her thoughts in a hot-pink Journal of Truths. One of my favorites is “The scariest things in our lives aren’t always the bogeymen under the bed. It’s the fear that the small bird with bound wings that lives in the darkest place in our hearts will one day find a way to break free”. That pretty much sums up most of the characters in this book. What did you think about the comments in this journal? 31 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE
PAM: I loved the truths Loralee captured in her hot pink journal. She offered such a wide variety of thoughts! She noted comments ranging from advice she remembered her mother giving to humorous little tidbits. Not only did she feel compelled to jot down her mother’s advice; she often shared it with Merritt. At first this made Merritt irritable and angry. However, in time, she came to appreciate these comments. Do you think this was an indication of Merritt’s heart softening towards Loralee? BECKY: Absolutely, but I think that it was also just the simple fact that Merritt was finally in a loving environment that allowed her to let down her guard. Let’s discuss the unique mystery that weaves through this story. The old house (and its previous inhabitants) hold a few secrets, including a strange collection in the attic. I completely enjoyed this part of the story. Did you like this facet of this novel? PAM: I found this storyline interesting and very unique. A plane exploded in a ball of fire above this little town years before. Merritt’s late husband’s grandmother was working in her attic workspace when this tragedy occurred. After discovering some important information about the incident, she is compelled to try to solve the mysteries of who and how. However, she works in secret in her attic room for many years. Why do you think she felt the need for secrecy? BECKY: Her husband was not a kind man so originally, that was probably the majority of the reason. Hiding her interests from him protected her from his hostility. Her projects were quite unique and I would imagine that she also didn’t want others to view them and ask questions. I thought that this was an interesting spin on a story, however as the book came to a conclusion, the “mystery” was a bit too unbelievable for me. Did you like the ending of this story? PAM: I did like the ending, but it could feel too far-fetched for many readers. It was a very enjoyable book, but I always enjoy Karen White! Becky, as we leave the fragrance of pluff mud behind us, where will we end up next month? BECKY: Let’s get ready for Halloween with The Troop by Nick Cutter. An annual Boy Scout camping trip will leave 5 fourteen year-old boys fighting for their lives.
