online with a business that has no local ties, none of it stays in your community. So, one of the best gifts you can give this year is to spend money as close to home as possible with locally owned businesses.

This is a very busy time of year for most of us. Scrambling to get all our work p r o j e c t s done before holiday time off...helping the kids get last minute assignments for school done before semester’s end...trying to find that perfect gift for someone special...it can all become very overwhelming and stressful.

This month I challenge each of you to embrace the lost art form of gift giving. We sometime lose focus and only see the “gift getting” side of things. In other words, we get hung up on “will he like it” or “is it what she wants” instead of seeing the joy and power of giving. Gifting is just as much about the person giving as the person receiving the gift.

Giving gifts during the holiday has different significance to most people. However, there is usually a constant of trying to find the “right” thing to buy. In our December issue we have a great feature of locally made items that would make great gifts for friends and family. Not only would your friends be impressed with your ninja-like gifting skills, but when you purchase from local businesses you help keep your local community strong. On average, when you spend one dollar with a locally owned business about 3/4 of that dollar stays in your local community. When you spend that dollar

So here is the challenge. Take a look at the variety of locally made products we have listed in this issue and find one that reminds you of someone special. This way the gift determines the person receiving it. Buy it and see how special it makes that person feel to know you thought of them when finding it. What a wonderful feeling. Stay safe this holiday season and enjoy time with family and friends. Spread some love around our community and shop local. From my family to yours, have a Merry Christmas and a blessed new year. EXPERIENCECASTLEROCK CASTLEROCKhistory WILLIAM DILLON

William Dillon was born in New York, grew up in Ireland, and originally came to Colorado in 1880 to improve his health after contracting tuberculosis. After about two years William felt well enough to return to Ireland to resume his practice of law. William was admitted into the Irish Bar in 1874, practiced law for the following 5 years before coming to live on West Plum Creek for the two years he was recovering from his illness. He then returned to Dublin but decided to return and make Castle Rock his home. William contacted George Ratcliff whom he boarded with for the two years he lived on West Plum Creek and they agreed to purchase the Crull Ranch dividing the cost between them equally and adding the Crull ranch to the Ratcliff’s T-Ranch. He proceeded to live in a little log cabin on the ranch and married George Ratcliff’s daughter Elizabeth in 1885. William’s family visited sometime before the wedding and his uncle Charles Henry Hart noticed the lack of a Catholic Church in Castle Rock and left money to build one. One of Charles’ requests was to name

the church St. Francis of Assisi, after William’s brother Henry Dillon who had just became a Franciscan priest. The dedication of the new Catholic Church was on December 11, 1888. Elizabeth and William lived with the Ratcliffs for a year before building their own house on Cantril Street in Castle Rock. They lived in that house for seven years and during that time William continued to practice law and Elizabeth gave birth to four sons. In 1893 William sold his interest in the Crull Ranch/T-Ranch to George Ratcliff and moved his family to Chicago. Until 1902 William was the editor of the New World, a Catholic newspaper in Chicago, then resumed practicing law in the firm of O’Donnell, Dillon, and Toolen. In 1906, together with four other lawyers, William Dillon proposed to St. Ignatious College (the predecessor to Loyola University) that the school should establish a law

department. That set in motion the creation of Loyola University Chicago School of Law where Dillon became the first dean. Six more children were born to the couple while they were in Chicago and in 1916 the family returned to Castle Rock. They built a house at 517 Cantril Street which was just across the street from their first home. The new house consisted of three stories. However, the top two stories were later destroyed when they were removed in the hopes of those two stories becoming another house. In 1935, during the dust storms, William’s lungs became congested and he passed away at the age of 85 and is buried at the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Castle Rock. LET’S SKATE IN DOWNTOWN CASTLE ROCK

The Rink at the Rock, located in the heart of Downtown, is a public amenity launched by the Castle Rock Downtown Development Authority. The fourth annual Rink at the Rock season is currently underway and will continue through Monday, February 15, 2016. The Rink at the Rock is located at 414 N. Perry Street.

DECEMBER 2015

“The Rink is a great addition to Downtown Castle Rock during the holiday season. It has become a tradition for families and friends to meet and celebrate together. Its success wouldn’t be possible without the support and collaboration of the Downtown Development Authority, the Town of Castle Rock and our community partners. Mywedding. com will be the title sponsor again this year, along with Medved Autoplex and so many other generous sponsors,” said Greg Boman, Chairman of the Downtown Development Authority. “Our heart is committed to Castle Rock” commented Woody Pastorius, President & CEO of mywedding.com, referring to their support of the Downtown project and their heart shaped logo which adorns the Rink at the Rock as title sponsor in Downtown Castle Rock. The Rink at the Rock will again offer a variety of ice activities through February. Rink hours will be Wednesdays and Thursdays 4:00 - 8:00 pm, Fridays 4:00 - 9:00 pm, Saturdays 11:00 am - 9:00 pm, and Sundays 11:00 am - 7:00 pm; please check the calendar for special activities on Mondays and Tuesdays. Skate fees 15 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

are $8 for adults (12+), $6 for children (11 and under), and $3/pair skate rental. Punch pass cards are also available, $100 for adults, $80 for a child; passes include skates and 10 trips on the ice. In the warmer months, the Rink, known also as The White Pavilion, is home to intimate concerts, cultural events, movies, and outdoor markets. We look forward to seeing our Castle Rock families enjoying Downtown Castle Rock again this winter!” says Kevin Tilson, Director of the Castle Rock Development Authority and the Downtown Alliance. The Castle Rock Downtown Alliance is a partnership between two entities, The Downtown Merchants Association (DMA) and the Downtown Development Authority (DDA). The DMA is a non-profit association dedicated to bringing activity and awareness of Downtown Castle Rock to the citizens of Castle Rock and beyond. The Downtown Development Authority is charged with encouraging redevelopment utilizing tax increment financing. Projects range from beautification to community amenities, adaptive reuse of space to façade renovations, to large development projects. The DMA and DDA work as a collective Alliance focused on enhancing and improving Downtown Castle Rock. More information about The Rink at the Rock can be found at www.rinkattherock.com.

with Pam & Becky

A Christmas Memory By Truman Capote This is a darling short story about a seven year old boy and his elderly cousin, whom is his best friend. They are preparing for the holidays, and their annual event of making, and giving away fruitcakes. It may not have many pages but this is a powerful story of a bond between two unlikely buddies. BECKY I picked this short story thinking that it would

be a great read for a busy time of year. What I quickly discovered was an absolute treasure. Truman Capote wrote this mostly autobiographical story for Mademoiselle Magazine in December of 1956. It wasn’t a printed book until 1966. It’s a short story about his memory of preparing for the holidays with his elderly cousin. Did you enjoy this tale as much as I did?

PAM I loved this story of friendship and the excitement that is found in a special relationship. His elderly cousin calls him “Buddy,” after a long ago acquaintance. He is accepting of this nickname and it seems to somehow add to the magic of this unlikely pair. They live in a house with many other relatives who don’t always appreciate their special adventures. At one point, one of the relatives becomes angry with Buddy’s cousin. What were your thoughts about this “pecking order” in the house? BECKY There is a line in the beginning part of the

book that reads, “Other people inhabit the house, relatives; and though they have power over us, and frequently make us cry, we are not, on the whole, too much aware of them.” I think that this says it all. The friends are clearly at the bottom of the pecking order but it doesn’t seem to affect them too much. The two are treated a bit harsh but I think that it represented what was normal for the time in history that this is written. What did you think about the beautiful illustrations?

DECEMBER 2015

PAM The illustrations certainly enhance this lovely

story. The fun drawings help the reader form a complete picture of the characters and their adventures. Some of their biggest adventures revolve around gathering the ingredients to make fruitcakes for many friends (and even people they didn’t know personally). It is an exciting time for both of them when his cousin wakes up and declares it is time for 19 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

their annual task. Didn’t you love how they worked together so excitedly?

BECKY They were an adorable pair and although it

is a short story the author made this pair delightfully engaging. If you like the beauty of an older style of writing than you will enjoy this little treasure. I am going to buy a couple of copies for Christmas presents. Did you know that there is also a movie based on this book?

PAM Great idea, Becky; this would make a lovely gift. I did not know there is a movie based on this story. Is it a recent movie? I would love to watch it during the Christmas season. BECKY During my research I found some interesting

information. The first version was filmed, by ABC Stage 67, in 1966 and is narrated by Capote. One of the stars won an Emmy and the production won a Peabody Award. You can find it on YouTube but unfortunately it is broken into six separate recordings. There was also a Hallmark television movie made in 1997 with Patty Duke. If you really want to get into the spirit of this movie then whip up a loaf of fruitcake. Check out the following link to a fruitcake recipe. I was looking for something more unique than what we traditionally think of when fruitcake is mentioned. I haven’t tried it yet but it sounds pretty darn yummy.

davidlebovitz.com/2007/11/chocolatecherry Pam, please tell us what the first pick of 2016 will be.

PAM We will take a sharp turn and explore the history of World War II through the eyes of many women, as we discuss The Girls of Atomic City By: Denise Kiernan.

Happy Holidays from Bookends!

LOCALAUTHORSPOTLIGHT Hello, BEAUTY Full By Elisa Morgan Women struggle under the onging weight of “not-enoughness.” Not attractive enough. Not smart enough. Not fit enough. Not creative enough ... And therefore, not beautiful. We are broken and ashamed to be so. In our eyes, brokenness makes us unlovable and unusable. But in Scripture, God is clear that he sees us the way we already are in Christ: deeply loved and abundantly influential. Hello, Beauty Full explodes the shame-based mythology of our “not-enoughness,” empowering women to see ourselves as beautiful creations designed by God. Life in a Pinball Machine ~ Memoir of An Idiot ~ By Mike Westmoreland I think my first awareness that I was marginal and having difficulty paying attention and following the “rules” of order happened in the second grade. I was always bouncing about, curious as to what everyone else was doing. One day I was pulled out of the class by the school counselor who asked me why it was that every time I was called upon by the teacher, I would turn around in my desk and reply, “Who me?” All the good intentions of those faithful teachers were for naught-my eyes generally glancing to the outside to see what was going on out there and not to what was being written on the chalkboard. Even my religious instructors throughout my life have had grave concerns-in a manner of speaking.

DECEMBER 2015

I’ve been bouncing around ever since, never really choosing a path, but simply reacting to every experience that has been placed in my way. Life in a Pinball Machine is available online at amazon.com.

BROKEN PHONE

DECEMBER 2015

Ruin Your Day

OH NO! You stop in horror as you hear a loud ‘crack’ when you sit down. you just realized that your cell phone was in your back pocket! Hoping for the best you slowly pull it out just to realize the screen has dozens of little spider web cracks spread all over it. What now? You could head over to the local phone store and see if there is anything they can do? More than likely the only option they will give is to purchase a new phone and sign a new contact. Well, you do have options and they are far less expensive than a new phone. Try getting your phone repaired instead of replacing it. Many businesses have popped up that will repair your broken or damaged phone at a fraction of the cost. These businesses, like locally owned Device Dr., can fix a wide range of issues which your phone may be suffering from. Screen is cracked? No problem. Battery no longer holding a charge? They’ve got it covered. Speaker not sounding right? They can make it sound beautiful again. Many repairs can be completed same day with very little down time. So instead of replacement, try repair and save time and money. Device Dr. is located at 734 S. Perry St. Unit D in Castle Rock.
