February is a time of year many people associate with love. Because of Valentine’s day, we think a little more about those people close to us and buy sweet treats to show them how much they mean to us. This is also the time of year when many young couples say “I Do” and decide to create a new life together. The start of an exciting new time in these couple’s lives when they move from being two people to becoming one couple. Life has an interesting way of showing us how love is so important in our lives. Not just the traditional love, but also the love you can have for a friend, a community or a moment. When I was a young man in my early years of high school I met a very special young lady. She impressed me with her shyness, intelligence and natural beauty. I fell for her as our relationship grew over time. I vividly remember they day where I realized I could not survive without the love of this sweet young lady. As I sat there, now in college, contemplating the future I realized that every life changing event which I had not yet experienced... every success that would come in the future...every heart ache and challenge which would surely materialize in the future...every aspect of my life...was something I yearned to share with her. She had

become as essential to my being as food, water and air. It was at that moment I realized...and prayed... that she would become my wife. I was fortunate that she agreed and this year will mark the 20th year that I have had the honor and privilege of calling her my wife. Love also manifests itself in other ways. Over the years I have built life long friendships and share a level of love with these people that has cemented their importance in my life and mine in theirs. Similar to the love of a brother or sister. I have also experienced love from a complete stranger that has had a lasting impact. An unexpected smile from someone I will probably never meet again that just happened to come when I needed it most. It is amazing how much impact a simple act of love can have on the world around us. This month I challenge each of you to do something very simple... very easy...very impactfull. This month I challenge you to just love. Lend a smile to a stranger, call up an old friend, play a game with your kids, do something anonymous for someone in need, just spread some love around. I guarantee this simple expansion of love in our community will come back ten fold and continue to make our world a better place. Happy February and remember, just love!

EXPERIENCEPARKER SEARCHPARKERhistory THE HISTORIC RHODE ISLAND HOTEL

Most of us in Parker have stopped into Fika on Mainstreet to enjoy a great cup of coffee. What you might not know is you are also stepping into a bit of Parker history as Fika is housed in what was once the Rhode Island Hotel. Also called the Rhode Island House, Goddard Hotel and/or the Parker Hotel, the Rhode Island Hotel was built for Martin and Nellie Goddard in 1906. Martin was a well intentioned businessman and originally came to Parker in 1893 with the hopes of running a bar business in George Parker’s old saloon. For the next six years, Martin dabbled in a bit of everything. He rented some land and began farming. He sold milk, coal and fence posts. At one point, he even had a peddler’s wagon. At the turn of the century, Martin and Nellie began running the Englewood Hotel, which was located on land adjoining the south edge of Parker. Unfortunately, Martin’s health was not as strong as his ambition and he fell ill often. At one point, he was confined to St. Anthony’s Hospital while suffering from pleurisy. As his health began to improve, so did the health of Parker’s businesses. The rate of growth in town brought about the need for hotel space. Martin and Nellie purchased a handful of lots near what was the railroad

The Rhode Island has had several owners over the years, most notably, Charlie O’Brien. He operated a hardware store, liquor store and real estate office in the building. Over the years, the hotel became ensconced in the present building and if you look from across the street, you can make out the front dormer. From the rear, you can clearly see the outline of the original building. The next time you step into Fika, just imagine the travels and tales of all those who have been in that quaint little building before you! When you’re getting ready to bring a new baby home, and even after you get home, there is no shortage of advice on what to feed your baby, when to feed them, sleep schedules, products to use, activities to try – it’s exhausting enough to just get through the day with your newborn, let alone try to figure out how to sift through all the tips and recommendations from friends, family and websites! Walking into one of those “big box” type stores can be quite daunting as well; it’s hard to know where to even start. Luckily, we have something of a parent sanctuary right here in Parker! The Gator Loft is a mom owned, mom approved and mom recommended baby boutique in Parker, but it’s so much more than a great place to find great products for your kids. The real jewel in the crown is the variety of classes offered and opportunities to expand your “parent village” and just a wonderful haven for parents and their little ones. A incredible variety of classes, including Dance for wee ones up to elementary aged kiddos, prenatal and mommy and me yoga, Love and Logic Workshops, CPR/AED class, and Music Together classes are offered at The Gator Loft. Many classes are one-time, informational classes like the “Eat, Sleep & Poop” class that covers everything you need to know about your new baby’s schedule in the first month home. There are also free groups such as the weekly Newborn Mom group that meets Mondays at 1pm, the Toddler play time weekly on Mondays at 10am, and other free classes. This time makes shopping with your little one a fun experience instead of a chore. The Gator Loft is located at 10490 N. Dransfeldt Rd. and is open Monday through Saturday 10-5, Sunday 12-5. You can find them on Facebook and online at thegatorloft.com or email owner Katie Neumann at katie.neuman@thegatorloft.com

depot and then partnered with William O’Brien to build a luxury hotel with all the modern conveniences, including a large livery stable. With that, the Rhode Island Hotel was born and opened its doors a just over 109 years ago on Thanksgiving Day, 1906. Luxurious indeed, it boasted steam heating, acetylene lighting, hot and cold water on both floors and a built in sanitary system. After several successful years, Martin invested in the Cherry Creek Telephone Company and the hotel became the town telegraph office in 1913. It wasn’t all good luck as the hotel basement flooded in 1912 and a fire destroyed the livery stable as well as all the Cherry Creek Telephone Co. wire and supplies stored there in 1917. The next year, Martin Goddard died, although there is no record of the exact date. After the fire, the Goddard property was broken up and sold off and Mrs. Laura Clossen, a one-time teacher, bought the property and rented it out for many years, finally selling to Charles Fiszelle in 1939. Mrs. Goddard, arguably one of Parker’s biggest boosters, died in 1924. She is buried in an unmarked grave next to her husband in Parker Cemetary.

On Beekeeping In Parker

Did you know that more and more people are interested in becoming backyard beekeepers? Parker joined the ranks of Colorado municipalities to allow and promote urban beekeeping when the Town Council voted in September of 2015. Douglas County also allows beekeeping in neighboring subdivisions that are not part of the town, such as Parker North. The Parker Cultural and Scientific Commission, a citizen’s advisory board appointed by Town Council to foster and participate in providing opportunities for cultural and scientific experiences for the community of Parker, recommended that the Town sanction beekeeping because bees are beneficial to the environment, are necessary for garden pollination, provide educational opportunities and produce delicious local honey.

FEBRUARY 2016

The Town Council also heard from a number of area

beekeepers who shared their expertise and provided input on what the town’s ordinance should require for responsible and successful beekeeping. Beekeepers and people interested in beekeeping should review the municipal ordinance for Parker and its requirements. The ordinance is available online at: http://parkeronline.org/ DocumentCenter/View/22557. Citizens should also check with their homeowners’ associations (HOAs) because HOAs have the authority to create additional requirements above and beyond the town’s requirements or to prohibit beekeeping altogether. In brief, the town’s ordinance specifies that if your lot is 5,000 square feet, you may have two backyard beehives. Larger lots may have more, for example, a half acre lot may have up to six beehives. Bees must be kept in hives with movable combs or frames. Also, to discourage bees from congregating in neighbors’ dog dishes or bird baths, beekeepers need to provide a convenience source of water for their bees. Indeed, bees need water in order to thrive and produce honey.

Interested in becoming a beekeeper, here are some tips l “Bee” educated. Beekeeping is complex and requires a significant investment in money and time. l The best way to become educated about beekeeping is to take a class. You will find a listing of classes on the State Beekeeper’s Association website, coloradobeekeepers.org - click on resources, then education. l Take the “Backyard Beekeeping” class offered by the Town, February 20, 2016. This is a 2 hour introductory class that can help you determine if you want to keep honeybees. For more information, visit www.ParkerArts.org l Read a book or two about beekeeping. l Watch online videos on beekeeping. l Attend local beekeepers club meetings for education and to find a beekeeper mentor. Most beekeepers are passionate about their craft and are willing to share their experience. There are two clubs in Douglas County, the SouthEast Beekeepers that meets in the Pinery and the High Land Bee Club that meets in Roxborough. Consult coloradobeekeepers. org, “events” to view a posting of club meetings.

pproximately 85% of the US population will experience acute low back pain lasting 2-4 weeks. Let’s face it, we sit too much and move too little, which can contribute to weakness, stiffness and low back pain. If you are one of these people, you know the difficulties that accompany low back pain. Many people get better after 2-4 weeks, however, the pain may last weeks, months and years longer. If you are one of the few that are experiencing chronic low back pain, you may benefit from clinical Pilates. Clinical Pilates is an approach that combines the benefits of Physical Therapy and Pilates- based exercises to turn on the deepest core muscles that are slow to rebound after an episode of acute low back pain. Instead of returning to normal looking and functioning spinal muscles they lose strength, reduce in size, and turn into fatty tissues. Fatty tissues do not provide the strength and stability to the bones in the back. Instead, the loss of ‘normal stiffness’ and strength of the spine allows unwanted, extra movements, causing wear and tear on the sensitive tissues of the bones, ligaments, joints, muscles and nerves in the back causing back pain. The back pain may eventually disappear, but the muscles haven’t regained their strength, size, stamina and stability without the proper deep core training. Pilates works to strengthen the deepest core muscles of the abdominals and spinal muscles, returning the fatty, dysfunctional muscles to strong, resilient and stabilizing structures. When these muscles remain weak, you are more susceptible to reinjuring your back, or another body part, due to changes and adaptations as a result of the normal healing process. These movement adaptations are subtle and create compensations in how you move and your ability to properly access your deep core muscles. The subtle movement changes lead to tight, weak and deconditioned tissues setting you up for other injuries. Pilates helps identify the weak, tight and deconditioned tissues leaving you with a stronger, more flexible and balanced body. Before beginning a Pilates program for back pain check with your doctor or physical therapist. Once you are cleared to begin exercising, it’s always a good idea to work with an instructor who specializes in back pain. Some exercises may not be appropriate for your back based on your diagnosis, what movements alleviate and what movements aggravate your pain. For example, back pain due to a bulging disc may be made worse by sitting and forward leaning positions. For this reason, it is important that people who are experiencing back pain, are carefully assessed by a healthcare professional before starting a Pilates for back pain program. Are you ready to reduce the wear and tear on your spine and create a stronger, more flexible and balanced body? Try Clinical Pilates…it does a body good!! Dr. Rebecca Hoeck is a Physical Therapist and Certified Pilates Instructor. She is the owner and clinical director of Intelligent Motion Therapy, LLC. that evening, the party really gets rolling with the Black Eyed Bingo Night at Deep Space. This event kicks off a regular Black Eyed Bingo monthly event sponsored by the CASC. Black Eyed Bingo takes bingo to the next level with black lights, music and a total party atmosphere. Starting in April, the last Friday of each month through October will feature a Black Eyed Bingo night coinciding with Parker Wine Walks with proceeds going to many area groups. At noon the live music begins and later that day, the Silent Auction and Scavenger Hunt winners will be announced. with Pam & Becky

The Gilded Hour By Sara Donati

Welcome to New York City in 1883. Construction on the Brooklyn Bridge is almost complete, transportation was primarily by walking or horse-drawn carriage, gaslight was the main source of lighting and communication is done by writing letters or telegrams. Meet Anna and her cousin Sophie Savard. Both are doctors that specialize in women’s health. They have a passion to help women but it is a male dominated occupation, during a time when women have few options in regard to their bodies. BECKY This 700 plus page book has so many topics

that are covered during this story that I don’t know where to begin. We have romance, murder, immigration issues, missing children and the controversial topic of contraception and abortion. For the majority of the story we follow Dr. Anna Savard. She is a single, no-nonsense doctor working at a charity hospital. Did you easily warm up to this character?

PAM Initially, I felt that Anna’s character was going to be abrupt and cold. However, as I got to know her, I loved the combination of strength and caring that was Anna Savard. Sophie and Anna were part of an unconventional family that embraced the education and voice of women in a time when not all appreciated this change. They lived with their aunt, who was a strong woman that encouraged and supported Sophie and Anna in their educational and career goals. What did you feel about this character? BECKY Aunt Quinlan was one of the more interesting

FEBRUARY 2016

characters to me. She had a smaller part but I enjoyed her view on life. She was very forward thinking regarding a woman’s role in the world. In her home, girls were encouraged to explore, try new things and be independant. She had a very strong and specific role in this story. However, while I was reading, I had a hard time distinguishing Anna and Sophie’s “voice” during the story, did you?

PAM I agree. It was challenging to form a complete picture of either one, especially at the beginning of the story. One of the many story lines begins when Anna is called to examine and determine health issues for a large group of orphans. This leads to Anna meeting a family of children that have recently lost their parents. Although there are many children, she is drawn to this family and will cross paths again. Anna also meets Jack, a detective with the local police department. They feel an attraction right away and we witness a courtship that bewilders Anna, who felt she would never have a relationship. What were your feelings about Jack? 31 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE

BECKY He was a

very likable character. I pictured someone similar to George Clooney. He was successful, handsome, unattached, liked children and was close to his sister’s family. A little too good to be true but his character fit well in this story that had so much going on. There are some sensual scenes that I didn’t think were necessary but you can easily skip over those areas if it’s not to your liking. When I picked this book I didn’t realize that it was the first part of a series. Were you satisfied with the conclusion of this book?

PAM I didn’t realize this book was the first in a series. That puts the conclusion into a new perspective for me! There were many unanswered questions at the end of this story. Will you read the next book to help answer some of these outstanding questions? BECKY There are a few storylines that I would like to know

the end to but I wouldn’t be interested in taking on another book of this size just to get the complete picture. There are some friends that I would recommend this book to but it’s unlikely that I would pursue this author again. Check out this website if this book looks interesting to you, http:// thegildedhour.com . It has some wonderful information, a deleted scene and a few photos. Are your unanswered questions enough to encourage you to read the next book in this series?

PAM If I am looking for a book to read, I will probably pick up her next story in order to solve the remaining mysteries. I really enjoyed a few of the characters and wouldn’t mind following the rest of their adventures. I will have to check out the website! Our next adventure will take us to London and Paris, as we follow the adventures of two women that have a surprising connection.
