This is also the time of year when many young couples say “I Do” and decide to create a new life together. The start of an exciting new time in these couple’s lives when they move from being two people to becoming one couple. Life has an interesting way of showing us how love is so important in our lives. Not just the traditional love, but also the love you can have for a friend, a community or a moment. When I was a young man in my early years of high school I met a very special young lady. She impressed me with her shyness, intelligence and natural beauty. I fell for her as our relationship grew over time. I vividly remember they day where I realized I could not survive without the love of this sweet young lady. As I sat there, now in college, contemplating the future I realized that every life changing event which I had not yet experienced... every success that would come in the future...every heart ache and challenge which would surely materialize in the future...every aspect of my life...was something I yearned to share with her. She had

become as essential to my being as food, water and air. It was at that moment I realized...and prayed... that she would become my wife. I was fortunate that she agreed and this year will mark the 20th year that I have had the honor and privilege of calling her my wife. Love also manifests itself in other ways. Over the years I have built life long friendships and share a level of love with these people that has cemented their importance in my life and mine in theirs. Similar to the love of a brother or sister. I have also experienced love from a complete stranger that has had a lasting impact. An unexpected smile from someone I will probably never meet again that just happened to come when I needed it most. It is amazing how much impact a simple act of love can have on the world around us. This month I challenge each of you to do something very simple... very easy...very impactfull. This month I challenge you to just love. Lend a smile to a stranger, call up an old friend, play a game with your kids, do something anonymous for someone in need, just spread some love around. I guarantee this simple expansion of love in our community will come back ten fold and continue to make our world a better place. Happy February and remember, just love!

DOUGLAS COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT OFFICES

Most residents in and around Castle Rock know that the headquarters for our school district are housed in the District Offices located at 620 Wilcox Street here in Castle Rock, but many may be surprised at just how long that building has been a part of the school district’s history. At the turn of the century, a brick high school was built in the 600 block of Wilcox to handle the growing population in Castle Rock. Sadly, that building burned down in 1909, just two years after it was built and a new rhyolite building was built as a replacement. Nearly 60 years later, the

BENNINGTON MERCANTILE

If you live in Castle Rock, even if you’re new to town, chances are you’ve seen Bennington Mercantile but you may not know that Bennington Mercantile is not just another feed store. Its history and services are as rich as diverse as any other landmark in town. Bennington Mercantile has been family owned and operated by Wayne and Teresa Bennington since 1994, but this business precedes their ownership. It’s the oldest business still operating in downtown Castle Rock, originally established in 1902, and the Bennington’s are just the 8th owners in the store’s 112 year history. Bennington Mercantile stocks popular and core feeds for all your animals and is able to special order products for you if necessary. You can find everything you need to feed and care for your livestock, your furry, four legged friends and even fish and birds at Bennington Mercantile. There is even a frequent buyer program for most brands of pet foods. In addition to the vast supply of feeds, health care products and treats for your animals, you’ll find a fantastic selection of men’s clothing and boots from brands like Carhart and Ariat and beautifully made women’s clothing, accessories and jewelry. There’s even something for the kiddos with timeless toys. Distinctive home décor and and gifts are also available at Barrington Mercantile. If you need a propane refill, they’ve got you covered there as well. Take advantage of their frequent fill up program – fill four tanks and your fifth refill is free! There’s even drive-thru service for RV and Campers. Come in for what you need, stay to see what you find! Bennington Mercantile is located at 420 Third Street in Castle Rock. They are open MondayFriday 9am-6pm, Saturday 9am-5pm & Sunday 10am-3pm. Find them on Facebook, visit www. benningtonmerchantile.com or give them a call at 303-688-3016. 5 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

steadily increasing population warranted the need for a larger high school and Douglas County Senior High School was constructed on Front Street. The school building at 620 Wilcox remained open, housing grades 4-6. In 1984, after Castle Rock Elementary School opened its doors, the Wilcox School officially became the home for the District’s administration offices and remains as such today. A mid 20th Century addition with a beige brick exterior was added, but the original rhyolite exterior of this historic building can still be viewed from the east side, allowing everyone to take a peek at the original school house in Castle Rock.

COLORADO BLUEBIRD PROJECT OPEN HOUSE

Even though we are still in the thick of all things winter, we know that those signs of spring are not too far off. One of those sure signs is the birds making their way back from warmer winter climates to nest during the spring and summer months here in Colorado. The Colorado Bluebird Project offers a wonderfully unique, rewarding and educational experience to volunteers of all ages during this time. Volunteers are needed to assist with the monitoring of nest boxes from April through August as well as assisting with nest box construction. Boxes can be built to install in your own backyard, or you can help monitor many of the boxes already located in several local parks, schools, and open spaces all over Castle Rock. Last year, more than 70 volunteers contributed 459 hours to this program to help increase the Bluebird and Tree Swallow populations in Castle Rock. In addition, the Town’s natural resource specialist is available for educational presentations for schools, scout troops, other volunteer groups and community organizations. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer this year, plan on attending the open house on Monday, February 29th at Town Hall Council Chambers, located at 100 Wilcox Street, from 7-8pm. To apply for the program, go to www.crgov.com/2028/ Colorado-Bluebird-Project. You will find links to the application, instructions for next box construction, and the volunteer waiver. Sign up as a family, a group or just try a single nesting box in your own backyard. The Bluebird Project is sure to add a summer full of memories to your year. The Colorado Bluebird Project is offered through the POST (Parks, Open Space and Trails) Partners in Castle Rock and operates under the guidance of the Audubon Society of Greater Denver. Their mission is to improve the vitality of bluebird populations throughout Colorado and educate the public about the bluebirds.

AD Greens, Colorado’s home-grown salad concept, recently celebrated the grand opening of its new Castle Rock restaurant on January 14, 2016. This new location welcomed hundreds of guests who stopped by on opening day to enjoy Castle Rock’s first custom salad eatery. “We’ve looked forward to opening a MAD Greens in Castle Rock for quite a while now, so we’re very happy and proud to finally be a part of this great community,” says Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Marley Hodgson. “Waiting for the perfect location was a long time coming but well worth it and the Town of Castle Rock has been great to work with throughout the process. We know many Castle Rock residents maintain active and healthy lifestyles and there’s a strong demand and appreciation for a better-for-you fast, casual restaurant within the community. Our focus on fresh, from-scratch ingredients sourced from Colorado dairies, growers and suppliers is a natural fit here. And on a more personal note, we received so many messages, calls, Facebook posts and emails asking us to come; we didn’t want to let Castle Rock down.” MAD Greens has provided Colorado with healthy, inspired eats since 2004 when founders Hodgson and Dan Long pioneered the salad concept, wanting to make fresh, healthy, locally-sourced food affordable to everyone. The new Castle Rock location is the first of 15-17 new MAD Greens that will hit Colorado, Arizona and its newest market, Texas, in 2016. The restaurant chain is staged to nearly double in size in thanks to a $13 million dollar investment from Colorado-based 9th Street Capital.

FEBRUARY 2016

The chain continues to employ more than 250 Colorado-based employees, including Salad Artists, managers and corporate staff while remaining singularly committed to local farmers and the Colorado lifestyle. MAD Greens Castle Rock is located at 4991 Factory Shops Blvd., Suite 100. Open daily from 10:30am - 8:30pm. 11 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

Libraries closer to reality in 2016 Beautiful new libraries are closer to becoming reality in three County communities this year. Despite recent snow and alternately freezing and thawing temperatures, progress is on track at construction sites in Castle Pines, Lone Tree and Parker. In Castle Pines, crews are finishing mechanical, electrical and plumbing rough-ins and elevator installation. They are also already taping and painting drywall and installing the ceiling grid. Motorists who venture past the new location at 360 Village Square Lane will notice completions of exterior brick and stucco. The Castle Pines library location, which will also house new offices for the City of Castle Pines, may open as early as April, 2016.

FEBRUARY 2016

The crew at Lone Tree celebrated its “topping off” on Friday, January 15, with library and community leaders also in attendance. Topping off is a builders’ rite traditionally held when the last beam is placed atop a structure during its construction. Following this fun milestone, workers at the Lone Tree library building at 10055 Town Ridge Drive are also beginning to frame first and second floor interiors, hang interior drywall, install an elevator and rough in mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. Library leaders anticipate a June grand opening in Lone Tree.

13 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

The Parker library location, the largest of the three new buildings, at 20105 East Mainstreet, is framed in steel and has some concrete decking complete. Framing and sheathing of exterior walls is expected to be complete in early February, and the building will boast a roof membrane before the month is out. The Parker building will likely open sometime in August or September. All new libraries will be loaded with amenities including expanded parking, drive-through book drops, interactive features, outdoor spaces and more. All three locations will close for two to three weeks immediately prior to grand opening celebrations at the new buildings. Community members can sign up to receive email updates about construction, closings and openings by visiting DouglasCountyLibraries.org/ Newsletters. Newsletters will include instructions on how to reserve and retrieve books on hold, where to return materials, and where to attend Storytime during the brief planned library closures in each community. CLINICAL A PILATES

FEBRUARY 2016

f o r yo u r l ow b a c k p a i n

By Dr. Rebecca Hoeck PT, DPT

15 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

pproximately 85% of the US population will experience acute low back pain lasting 2-4 weeks. Let’s face it, we sit too much and move too little, which can contribute to weakness, stiffness and low back pain. If you are one of these people, you know the difficulties that accompany low back pain. Many people get better after 2-4 weeks, however, the pain may last weeks, months and years longer. If you are one of the few that are experiencing chronic low back pain, you may benefit from clinical Pilates. Clinical Pilates is an approach that combines the benefits of Physical Therapy and Pilates- based exercises to turn on the deepest core muscles that are slow to rebound after an episode of acute low back pain. Instead of returning to normal looking and functioning spinal muscles they lose strength, reduce in size, and turn into fatty tissues. Fatty tissues do not provide the strength and stability to the bones in the back. Instead, the loss of ‘normal stiffness’ and strength of the spine allows unwanted, extra movements, causing wear and tear on the sensitive tissues of the bones, ligaments, joints, muscles and nerves in the back causing back pain. The back pain may eventually disappear, but the muscles haven’t regained their strength, size, stamina and stability without the proper deep core training. Pilates works to strengthen the deepest core muscles of the abdominals and spinal muscles, returning the fatty, dysfunctional muscles to strong, resilient and stabilizing structures. When these muscles remain weak, you are more susceptible to reinjuring your back, or another body part, due to changes and adaptations as a result of the normal healing process. These movement adaptations are subtle and create compensations in how you move and your ability to properly access your deep core muscles. The subtle movement changes lead to tight, weak and deconditioned tissues setting you up for other injuries. Pilates helps identify the weak, tight and deconditioned tissues leaving you with a stronger, more flexible and balanced body. Before beginning a Pilates program for back pain check with your doctor or physical therapist. Once you are cleared to begin exercising, it’s always a good idea to work with an instructor who specializes in back pain. Some exercises may not be appropriate for your back based on your diagnosis, what movements alleviate and what movements aggravate your pain. For example, back pain due to a bulging disc may be made worse by sitting and forward leaning positions. For this reason, it is important that people who are experiencing back pain, are carefully assessed by a healthcare professional before starting a Pilates for back pain program. Are you ready to reduce the wear and tear on your spine and create a stronger, more flexible and balanced body? Try Clinical Pilates…it does a body good!! >> CASTLE ROCK MUSEUM www.CastleRockMuseum.org

The Castle Rock Museum is housed in a structure which by any account is its prime artifact. The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad had just been built between Denver and Old Colorado City (Colorado Springs) in 1871. It was the first narrow gauge line in the United States and its builder, General William Jackson Palmer, had selected several communities along its route as deserving of rail sidings or depots. Castle Rock became one of them in 1874 when it was designated as county seat of the newly re-aligned Douglas County. The Depot was moved from trackside to its present location in 1970, and was carefully restored by the Castle Rock Historical Society in 1996 for use as a local history museum. The building still retains the original interior features such as the old ticket window and baggage area with 125 years of graffiti on its walls.

with Pam & Becky

The Gilded Hour By Sara Donati

Welcome to New York City in 1883. Construction on the Brooklyn Bridge is almost complete, transportation was primarily by walking or horse-drawn carriage, gaslight was the main source of lighting and communication is done by writing letters or telegrams. Meet Anna and her cousin Sophie Savard. Both are doctors that specialize in women’s health. They have a passion to help women but it is a male dominated occupation, during a time when women have few options in regard to their bodies. BECKY This 700 plus page book has so many topics

that are covered during this story that I don’t know where to begin. We have romance, murder, immigration issues, missing children and the controversial topic of contraception and abortion. For the majority of the story we follow Dr. Anna Savard. She is a single, no-nonsense doctor working at a charity hospital. Did you easily warm up to this character?

PAM Initially, I felt that Anna’s character was going to be abrupt and cold. However, as I got to know her, I loved the combination of strength and caring that was Anna Savard. Sophie and Anna were part of an unconventional family that embraced the education and voice of women in a time when not all appreciated this change. They lived with their aunt, who was a strong woman that encouraged and supported Sophie and Anna in their educational and career goals. What did you feel about this character? BECKY Aunt Quinlan was one of the more interesting

FEBRUARY 2016

characters to me. She had a smaller part but I enjoyed her view on life. She was very forward thinking regarding a woman’s role in the world. In her home, girls were encouraged to explore, try new things and be independant. She had a very strong and specific role in this story. However, while I was reading, I had a hard time distinguishing Anna and Sophie’s “voice” during the story, did you?

PAM I agree. It was challenging to form a complete picture of either one, especially at the beginning of the story. One of the many story lines begins when Anna is called to examine and determine health issues for a large group of orphans. This leads to Anna meeting a family of children that have recently lost their parents. Although there are many children, she is drawn to this family and will cross paths again. Anna also meets Jack, a detective with the local police department. They feel an attraction right away and we witness a courtship that bewilders Anna, who felt she would never have a relationship. What were your feelings about Jack? 21 CASTLE ROCK MAGAZINE

BECKY He was a

very likable character. I pictured someone similar to George Clooney. He was successful, handsome, unattached, liked children and was close to his sister’s family. A little too good to be true but his character fit well in this story that had so much going on. There are some sensual scenes that I didn’t think were necessary but you can easily skip over those areas if it’s not to your liking. When I picked this book I didn’t realize that it was the first part of a series. Were you satisfied with the conclusion of this book?

PAM I didn’t realize this book was the first in a series. That puts the conclusion into a new perspective for me! There were many unanswered questions at the end of this story. Will you read the next book to help answer some of these outstanding questions? BECKY There are a few storylines that I would like to know

the end to but I wouldn’t be interested in taking on another book of this size just to get the complete picture. There are some friends that I would recommend this book to but it’s unlikely that I would pursue this author again. Check out this website if this book looks interesting to you, http:// thegildedhour.com . It has some wonderful information, a deleted scene and a few photos. Are your unanswered questions enough to encourage you to read the next book in this series?

PAM If I am looking for a book to read, I will probably pick up her next story in order to solve the remaining mysteries. I really enjoyed a few of the characters and wouldn’t mind following the rest of their adventures. I will have to check out the website! Our next adventure will take us to London and Paris, as we follow the adventures of two women that have a surprising connection.
