How Will Your Future Look? I’ve spent many hours thinking about the future. What will it be like when my kids are my age? How will the world look when I am my parent’s age? What will our community be next year or next decade? These thoughts constantly run through my head. Instead of letting this “unknown” cripple us, I am challenging each of you to embrace your responsibility to your community...your civic obligation. Simply put, our individual job to leave our community better than we found it. As you read about last month, one of my passions is raising money and awareness for the fight against pediatric cancer. On April 23rd I will be shaving my head (and maybe my beard) for the annual “Shave the Mayor” St. Baldrick’s event. Each year I also auction off the color of my hair before the event. This year, a local family donated $500 to have me dye my hair Broncos orange and blue. The result...is pretty cool if I do say so myself.

community better. It does not have to be a huge task, in fact often the smallest gestures have the biggest impacts. So my challenge for you this month is to do something little to make your community better. You could hold the door open for someone...share a smile with a stranger as they pass by...pay for someone’s groceries when they are not looking...pick up some trash you see on the side of the road...call an old friend and just say “HI.” You will be shocked as to how much positivity and love can be created when you do something little...or something as big as dying your hair crazy colors to raise money. We each have the power to make our future great. Don’t waste this power but rather embrace it! Lastly, come join me and over 50 others on April 23rd and watch us get bald. Visit ShaveTheMayor.com for more info (or to make a donation... please). Have a great month!

However, this fun and crazy gesture just underscores our obligation to do something every day to leave our

EXPERIENCEPARKER SEARCHPARKERhistory NEWLIN GULCH GOLD MINING DISTRICT

Newlin Gulch obtained its name because an early resident of the area, William C. Newlin, settled there in the 1860s. He had brought some of the first Shorthorn Cattle into the Pikes Peak Region, driving them, some 30 cows and one bull, all the way from Minnesota. He homesteaded southwest of the settlement of Pine Grove, and ran his cattle on the open range. The Newlin Gulch Gold Mining District was centered about four miles southwest of Pine Grove (now Parker), on the Newlin Gulch. Some mining operations in the Newlin Gulch area began in the mid 1880s, resuming again in the late 1890s. In early 1898, mining equipment was set up and operations began at several

locations along the gulch. Several small placer claims were made and numerous companies were formed to exploit the gold finds. As late as 1910 one mine, the Muldoon, was still in operation. However, the water supply proved to be inadequate and the yield too low, so the gold fields were abandoned. Although several promising placer deposits were found during the years previously mentioned, a large-scale production was never achieved. During succeeding years, there were sporadic attempts at working the diggings, particularly during the great depression of the 1930s. The last reported operations were in 1941. What was once the Parker Mining District area is no longer accessible as it now resides at the bottom of what is now the RueterHess Reservoir.

MANGIA! MANGIA! PORTOFINO PIZZA & PASTA

World renowned chef Wolfgang Puck once said, “Italian food is all about ingredients and it’s not fussy and it’s not fancy.” In Parker, Portofino Pizza & Pasta definitely fits that description. It is simply great food made with great ingredients. Since opening their doors several years ago, things have gotten bigger and better at Portorfino. The amazing menu options have grown to include unique creations like the Fiocchi made with Grana padano, Taleggio and ricotta cheeses and pear sautéed with sage butter almonds and glazed balsamic as well as nightly specials dreamed up by Chef Gabriel that never fail to delight. Of course, the menu still features favorites like the scratch made lasagna, amazing pizzas and Tortellini a la Portofino; each dish is complemented by the addictive garlic knots. If you have room, a fresh salad with the house balsamic dressing makes you feel a little less guilty about the pasta! Homemade tiramisu or a cannoli are the perfect end note, but you may need to take them home for a bit later when you have a little more room. Recently, the restaurant itself got bigger when they took over the neighboring space and expanded their cozy dining room, enabling many more tables in the restaurant. Guests can also enjoy a nice glass of Chianti or Cabernet with their meal as Portofino Pizza & Pasta now has license to serve you from their new bar. Whether you pop in for pizza and salad for lunch, grab it to go or sit down for a family meal any Italian grandmother would approve of, Portofino Pizza & Pasta offers a menu of homemade dishes, made with love! Celebrate Arbor Day in a Whole New Way! Come and experience the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, April 30th, in a whole new way! Because our parks are beautifully and sufficiently planted, Parker Parks and Recreation will be celebrating by giving out free seedling trees at Salisbury Park, 11920 Motsenbocker Rd. in Parker. Stop by the arborist table and meet the Town’s Parks and Forestry Team, who can answer questions about tree planting, pruning and tree selection. Kids will have the opportunity to build and take home a bird house courtesy of Home Depot. Participants can also enjoy a delicious pancake breakfast! Seedling quantities are limited and the fun starts at 9 a.m. In conjunction with the annual Arbor Day Celebration, join us for the newest event of the Parker Parks and Recreation Run Series, the Arbor Day 5 Mile Run/Walk with Sports Authority. The run/walk is professionally timed and features finishers’ medals for all registered participants and the free Huntington Learning Center Kids’ Dash for children 8 and under following the race! Pre-race registration, which closes at noon on April 28th, is $25 with walk-up/race-day registration for an additional $5. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome. Get more information and register for the race at www.ParkerRec.com/ArborDay5Mile. Arbor Day is a fun, educational event for the whole family and is an important piece to keeping Parker named as a “Tree City USA.” The Tree City USA® program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. Parker has been named as a Tree City USA for each of the last 22 years! In order to maintain this title, a commitment must be made to enhance the public’s awareness of trees within the community through events and educational opportunities such as the annual Arbor Day Celebration. The Town must also spend at least $2 per resident on tree care such as planting and pruning. Please remember that as there will be no digging this year, there’s no need to pack your shovels. Seedling trees, refreshments and giveaways will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. For questions regarding Parker’s celebration, visit our website at www.ParkerRec.com/ArborDay, call 303.805.3263 or email wepps@parkeronline.org.

Dust

Wonderbound presents

with Curious Theatre Company & Jesse Manley and His Band

Dust, the last performance this season from the uniquely exquisite Wonderbound, is scheduled for two amazing shows in Parker, April 23rd & 24th, at the PACE Center. Unlike anything you have seen on stage, Dust is a story of struggle, hardship and loss; a story from a time in American history that is often overlooked, the “Dirty Thirties” Dust Bowl era. With an original script by Dee Covington, emotional choreography by Garrett Ammon and music that embrace’s the region’s rich heritage. Dust is collaboration with the Curious Theater Company and Jessie Manley & His Band, who has composed an entirely new, original score for this show; think indie-folk with a blue grass twist. Working together with the dance company, bars of music are added here, changed there, to create a story woven together intricately between the dance company and the musicians. Unlike other dance driven shows, the actors from the Curious Theater Company interact with the dance company as seamlessly as the score to add to the complexity and creativity of this production. If you’ve never seen a show from Wonderbound, you’re missing out. Much more than a contemporary ballet company, Wonderbound’s company is comprised of ten classically trained dancers with performances that are driven more by music, emotion and collaboration and less by classic techniques. By working with local musicians from the Denver area, Wonderbound is able to create one of kind performances that engage audiences and defy the stereotype of a ballet stage performance. Some shows are skewed more towards the musical theater direction; others shake things up completely, like the Rock Ballet featured earlier this season with the music of David Bowie and Queen. Past shows have incorporated collaborations with illusionists, perfumists who have created scents that are specific to the show, even restaurants who have created tasting menus based on the performance. Wonderbound strives to be a true member of the community and invites the community to be a part of their company. Unlike many other companies, rehearsals are always open to the public; but they do so much more to make dance accessible to everyone. Through their numerous community programs, they are able to bring dance to everyone, from school children to senior citizens, in every socioeconomic sector. Their mission statement says it all, “Wonderbound uses dance to deepen humankind’s common bond through uncommon endeavors of discovery and creation.”

APRIL 2016

Treat yourself to the discovery of an experience unlike anything you’ve seen before – once you’ve spent an evening with Wonderbound, you’ll be left marveling as to what magic they have in store next. Luckily, you’ll be able to find out as the much anticipated announcement of next season’s shows will be made at the conclusion of Dust. More magic awaits audiences when the new season opens later this year.

A Stroll Through Downtown Parker written by Elizabeth Schneider – Parker Fan and Resident

Parker residents are fortunate to have access to a beautiful and inspiring downtown district that renders a trek to Denver completely unnecessary. The history and culture are rich in our downtown area with historic buildings such as the Ruth Memorial Church, which features floral metal sculpture art, the Rhode Island House, built in 1906, where clever shops abound and a strong sense of community is fostered. A variety of unique shopping opportunities are offered for those who love to shop as well as mingle with other residents. There are many clever places to pop in and grab a bite to eat or drink during a leisurely stroll. One never knows who they might encounter while outdoors! It is easy to walk or ride one’s bike on the Sulphur Gulch Trail system to the downtown area. A surprising feature is the tunnel that runs under Parker Roads, where art work is abundant and classical music is played, making it a real treat to walk or ride through. Stellar murals are on the trail, too, making it rather magical. There is an amazing “fitness center without walls” to the east of the PACE

Center, compliments of Parker Adventist Hospital, built in a slick Scandinavian design that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is useful. It addresses cardiovascular, flexibility and strength training in the various color-coded stations. It has a smartphone app as well that allows the user to connect via App Store or Google Play. The downtown district is dotted with charming sculptures, planters and charming decorations. The Schoolhouse has a lovely metal sculpture, The Dance, at the east entrance. The PACE Center has an amazing sound park to the east, as well as a stunning metal and glass sculpture at the front entrance. Sometimes musicians or singers from the local performing arts community can be found on random benches. It is a fabulous place to walk one’s dog and meet other interesting folks. Downtown Parker has so much to offer, completely free of charge and residents are in for a treat as they venture outdoors for a new adventure in what is truly a gem of a community.

Happy Trails! We are incredibly lucky to live in an area teeming with beautiful hike and bike trails, and for those a little more daring, rockier mountain trails, that we can walk, run, stroll, bike and ride on to enjoy the great state of Colorado. To keep the trails in great shape for everyone and ensure trail outings are enjoyable ones, there are a few things to keep in mind. Trail etiquette will differ slightly from trail to trail and place to place, but some basic rules of thumb apply to most. Bouldermountainbike.org offers a great reminder, “treat everyone you meet on the trail like you’d treat your mother (if you don’t like your mother, think of someone you really, really like.) Being nice solves a lot of problems before they happen.” Be nice. It’s a pretty simple rule. Be nice to the trail, stay on it, keep it in good shape, keep it clean and know when to yield to others on the trail. Knowing who has the right of way can be kind of tricky, but generally speaking, bikers yield to hikers and horses; hikers yield to horses and downhill traffic yields to uphill traffic. The concept is that bikers are fast and can stop and go easily so they let everything else have the right of way. Horses are big and unpredictable so they get the right of way above everyone else. Colorado trails are definitely a place where you could meet the occasional equestrian and should you meet a horse and rider on the trail, be considerate, step off the trail on the downhill side. Moving to the downhill side, when letting horses by, reduces your size and appearance and horses will tend to bolt uphill when spooked. Quietly greet the rider and ask if you are good where you are. Stand quietly while the horse and rider pass. In any situation, it is always best to communicate with the rider to ask them what they prefer, as they know their animal best. You and Mr. Ed should get along just fine that way. So far it seems pretty easy. Everyone yields to horses, bikers yield to hikers, and downhill yields to uphill. Hikerdude.com is quick to point out a few “gray areas” you may find yourself hiking through. “What if a downhill hiker meets an uphill cyclist? The guidelines

would say the biker yields, but personally I know it is a lot easier for me to stop and start hiking than it is when riding, so I generally step off the trail when hiking or running. I suppose the cyclist should never have an expectation that the hiker will let you pass, but it might happen out of courtesy.” What if an uphill runner meets up with a group hiking down the trail? Downhill traffic should yield, but a single runner may want to step off the trail, as it’s easier for one to move aside than a larger group of hikers. When yielding to other traffic, remember to always look for safe and durable surfaces to step onto. And finally, the International Mountain Biking Association recommends when riding single track to come to a complete stop and then side step off the trail, as opposed to just riding off the side of trail, and thereby widening it.

For quick reference, here are a few tips! l Stay on the trail. Do not cut switchbacks or take shortcuts.

Trail Etiquette Made Easy

l Stay to the right on wider paths and pass on the left. l Whenever you stop for a view, a rest, or to yield, move off the trail so it is free for others. l Greet people you meet. This makes sure they know you are there and is polite. A simple “Howdy” or “Nice Day” is fine. l When in a group, walk single file or take up no more than half of a wide trail. Make sure everyone in your group understands what actions to take when encountering walker, bikers, and horses. l Read trailhead guidelines. There may be specific rules for the trail you are on. l Pack It In - Pack It Out. It just does not make sense that someone spending time to get out into nature would litter. l Take a Picture. A pretty rock or a bunch of flowers deserve to remain where they are. l Report vandalism. l Whether you’re walking, cycling or riding, get out and enjoy the trails! 23 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE
