Freedom & Choice As we enter into May our minds have a tendency to switch gears. We’ve made it through the cold of winter and the unpredictable storms of early spring. May brings warmer days and a re-birth of our love for the outdoors. While we begin to dream of the fun to be had during warm spring and summer days, it is easy to forget a very special day, May 30th... Memorial Day. With 2016 being a Presidential election year it can become quite frustrating when we are subject to a constant barrage of campaign commercials and almost circus like events. We will be bombarded with messages of what’s wrong with our Country. Albeit difficult to not succumb to the constant negativity, I would challenge you this year to embrace it and welcome it.

Second, take a moment to thank that “friend” we all have who loves to use social media as a sounding board for every negative political thing they can post. Let them know that you may not agree with them, but you appreciate their freedom and opinion. Share a little positivity and you may be surprised how big of an effect it will have. Finally, I’d like to say THANK YOU to all our service members who are serving and have served. Without you, my family would not have a safe, free place to call home.

Now, before you start writing me letters asking if I have lost my mind to encourage people to embrace the negative political messages out there, please allow me to explain. Our world is a world of choices and freedoms. Unfortunately there are many places in our world were freedom and choice are merely words and not valued the way we do in America. Countless men and women have paid the ultimate price to guarantee the basic rights of freedom and choice to us in the U.S.A. They have laid down their lives as the foundation where our freedom can have a place to stand proud. So given the choice between living in a country where all people (even those who may not think like you do) have the right to express their opinions and a home where freedom of expression does not exist, I’ll choose freedom. That is why it is important for us to honor those brave protectors of our freedom this Memorial Day, remember and honor those who are no longer with us, and to embrace the political turmoil which this year is sure to bring. The alternative is unimaginable and something I hope none of us have to experience. That being said, I have two challenges for each of you this month. First, take a moment to honor a veteran. If you see one in a restaurant pick up their check. If your run across a vet in the store give them a high five. When out enjoying the nice weather if you see a service member give them a hug and say “thanks.”

EXPERIENCESOUTHAURORA SOUTHAURORAto-do MAGIC GARDEN

Now that the snow is (hopefully) finally over, green leaves and colorful blooms are starting to appear. A great way to get your kids excited about summer and educated about gardening is to build a Fairy Garden. Tagawa Gardens has a large variety of plants that are perfect for creating a Fairy Oasis in a planter on your porch or deck. Of course, any good Fairy Garden has to have the perfect accessories, which you also can find at Tagawa. A toadstool seat, a pixie-sized lantern, the prefect little house or maybe even a few Gnomes! The experts at Tagawa can answer any questions kids have so they’ll know how much light plants will need, how often they should water their garden and whether they’ve planted a garden better suited for inside or outside. Come in and ask for the resident Fairy and Gnome Poobah, Kris, she’s happy to help them create whatever their imagination can invent. You can come on your own time or attend a Fairy Gardening class. This month’s class will be held on May 28th. Go to tagawagardens.com to register. If you’re looking for a wonder-filled idea for a birthday party, schedule a Miniature Garden Party! No mess, no fuss, no set-up, just Fairy and Gnome filled fun! You bring the cake, Tagawa does the rest. Each girl and boy will get planting guidance, decorations for their garden and a tour of the fairies’ favorite nooks in the greenhouse. Don’t let the kids have all the fun; Fairy Gardens are a joy for imaginations of all ages! Stop and start creating! Tagawa Gardens is located at 7711 S. Parker Road. They are open Mon-Fri 9 to 7, Saturdays 8-7 and Sunday 9-5.

AURORA’S FIRST TOWN HALL

This month continues the celebration of Aurora’s 125th Birthday. One hundred and twenty-five years ago, thirty-six voters voted to incorporate Aurora, known then as Fletcher, on April 21st, 1891. The town was officially incorporated on April 30th, 1891. Once Aurora officially became a town, it was only fitting that there be a Town Hall. Aurora’s first Town Hall was built in 1907, the same year that the city changed its name from Fletcher to Aurora, Colorado. Aurora gained its city status in 1928, with a grand population of 2,174. It was about that same time when this photo of the first Town Hall was taken. Originally, the building was located at 16th and Elmira and served as the Town Hall until the 1950’s. Plans to celebrate Aurora’s birthday continue all summer long. This month catch the Aurora Singers on May 14th and 15th for their “Proud to be an American” concerts at East Middle School (aurorasingers.com) and the Aurora Symphony Orchestra on May 15th at North Middle School performing “Aurora Colorado Variations” by Aurora composer Joseph Scardetta. aurorasymphony.org

It’s Farmer’s Market Time!

MAY 2016

The incredibly popular Farmer’s Market at Southlands is back beginning May 7th. Every Saturday you can peruse the aisles to check out goods and wares from over 60 vendors with an emphasis on local produce, locally raised meats and other local products. Five to six local farms will be featured weekly along with four fruit growers from the Palisade bringing those delectable Palisade Peaches, apples, pears and other amazing summer fruits. The Farmer’s Market is committed to bringing the community as much fresh produce and locally made products as possible. Under this new ownership, now in their third year, the Farmer’s Market has blossomed into a “can’t miss” opportunity to shop for things like locally raised bison and beef and farm fresh eggs from pasture raised chickens. Additionally, you can find locally made salsas, fresh roasted chilies and green chile (which goes great with those eggs!), goods from three different local bakeries, kombucha, kale chips, local honey and jerky, Colorado wine, BBQ sauces, locally made pastas and handmade pierogi, which is always a market best seller. For seafood lovers, there’s also fresh seafood that is sustainably caught, processed and cryogenically frozen, then shipped directly to the market.

11 SEARCH SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE

Once you have your meals planned for the week and your baskets and bags are full of mouth watering salsas, produce and other locally made goodies; take some time to admire the work of local potters and other unique items featured at the Farmer’s Market. The kids will enjoy the market as well. Have them bring “splash-able” clothes and have some fun in the splash pad then go check out the face painter, balloon artist and other fun surprises throughout the season. Be sure to splash first, you don’t want that face paint to run! Before you head out to the Farmer’s Market there’s no need to grab breakfast before you come shop; there’s plenty of ready to eat food including a breakfast trailer and a coffee vendor to help get your day started. If you were there last year, you know what great things there are to see and shop for – if it’s been a while since you’ve been back, make a point to come and check out all the improvements that have been made since you last visited. The Market is open Saturdays from May 7th through October 1st from 8am to 1pm. Happy Shopping!

A HOME OF HOPE

Brent’s Place

Brent’s Place is a home of hope and healing for families that travel to the Denver area seeking medical treatment for their child. Children like Storei come to Denver for a bone marrow transplant as part of their cancer treatment, and need a safe environment to heal that is near the hospital. That is where Brent’s Place comes in; the only Children’s Hospital Colorado approved Safe-Clean housing facility for immune compromised patients and their families. Last year, the organization provided free housing for more than 100 families and the average family stayed at Brent’s Place for 120 days.

Brent’s Place was founded by Donn & Linda Eley in memory of their son Brent who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer in 1978 at the age of 13. During Brent’s yearlong journey he travelled to Iowa City, Iowa for a bone marrow transplant. Brent and his family were faced with the challenge of living far from home and their support system. Sadly, in 1988 Brent lost his battle and Donn and Linda Eley had to return to Denver without their son. Through this difficult journey Brent’s family gained first hand experience that would lead them to develop a safe haven for others walking a similar path.

MAY 2016

At Brent’s Place the staff and volunteers strive to take care of the little things, so families can focus on the big things. In fact, Brent’s Place is completely free for these families. In addition to housing the organization provides valuable programs for every member of the family like music therapy, yoga, movie nights and home cooked meals. By providing a safe place of hope and healing Brent’s Place ensures that the entire family will feel the support of a caring community. We invite you to learn more about Brent’s Place by visiting www.brentsplace.org. 13 SEARCH SOUTH AURORA MAGAZINE
