Thanks Dad June is a very special time. Not only does it mark the beginning of the Summer season with longer days and ample warmth, but it is also the time of year when we get to celebrate our dads. Father’s day is often noted as a time to buy a new grill, take dad to a ball game or perhaps get him that talking fish that hangs on the wall. This year, I’d challenge us all to explore Father’s day a little deeper and acknowledge more than just the men we celebrate on this day, but also the gifts they give. Fathers have such a deep impact on their children and the future of those generations that it is fitting to have a day when we can spoil our dads. In some ways society has drawn us away from acknowledging the uniqueness and importance that fathers serve in our lives. Nothing against moms, but dads fill a role specific to them and together with moms work to create a power team set to impart greatness on their kids. I was fortunate to have been born to an incredible dad. He taught me, through his own actions, what words like honor, compassion, dedication, perseverance and love meant. His wiliness to serve others and his caring to those around us made him shine as someone I wanted to be more like. Here is my challenge for all of us in June. When wishing that special “dad” a happy Father’s day this year, specifically thank him for one way he has impacted your life. Let him know that without him, you would not be who you are today.
Celebrate how his influence on you will make our world a better place. Then, take that gift...the gift of a positive impact he made on you and pass it along to someone else. If your dad is a hard worker, then go out and work a little harder than normal to honor him. If your dad is generous to others, then make a donation to his favorite charity. If your dad loves you and others unconditionally, then be a beacon of love and affection to someone who needs it. In short, take what makes your dad special and use that gift to positively impact our world. This would be the finest gift possible for Father’s day this year. As for my dad, I want to simply say THANK YOU. Without him I would not understand our role as citizens. I would not strive to leave our world better than it was before. Without him, my life would not be what it is today. Thanks for your sacrifices, your love, and for putting up with me when I was young...and not so young. Happy Father’s day to all the dads out there!

SAYING GOOD NIGHT TO DCL’S LONE TREE LIBRARY But not goodbye!
I
t’s been in the works with Douglas County Libraries (DCL) since 2013: a new and expansive library in Lone Tree, one with plenty of community spaces, quiet reading dens, learning zones for group study and tutoring sessions, dedicated
kids’ events space, and amenities like laptop vending and a drive-through book drop. And parking — about double the space for parking! But before the new library opens, the lights are going out on the existing one — and the Lone Tree community is invited to help flip the switch! DCL will say good night to its current Lone Tree library on Friday, June 17, from 4-5 p.m. in preparation for moving to the new library just 1.2 miles south. The “Good Night, Lone Tree” celebration includes light snacks, some fun with arts and crafts, and a special interactive Storytime for kids — pajamas optional! Library patrons can take part in this fond farewell by registering at DouglasCountyLibraries.org. The grand opening of the new Lone Tree library, located at 10055 Library Way, is Saturday, July 9. During the three weeks between closing the current Lone Tree library and opening the new one, library-goers have plenty of options for continued services and learning. Alternate Storytimes will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 21-July 7, at the Lone Tree Arts Center (10075 Commons St.), and books and other materials can be kept during the closure — no items will be due and no fines will accrue. However, materials can be returned

THEBOOKENDS
with Pam & Becky
The Weight of Silence By Heather Gudenkauf One morning two families awake to a parent’s worst nightmare, their little girls have gone missing. They were tucked into bed the night before and there is no sign of a struggle. Calli and Petra are best friends so it’s possible that they have gone out on an early morning adventure. However as the hours go by and the girls are nowhere to be found, it’s more likely that something terrible has happened. Everyone’s a suspect and tempers flare as the search for these girls begin.
PAM This dual mystery was a creative way for the author to give
background information and build up to the main answers of these questions. As I read this book, I realized that it reminded me of another story we discussed. As we gather more information from Calli’s brother, the tone reminded me of “Everything I Never Told You.” Do you remember that story, Becky? Did you find similarities in the style of storytelling?
BECKY Yes, we read that a while ago and it has a very similar storytelling pace as this book. Both are family dramas and each member brings a little piece of the puzzle to the table as the story unfolds. Also, in both books the brother in the story gives the most insightful information to help explain our mystery. Each chapter is written by one of six different points of view. Was this too confusing or did it flow well while you were reading? PAM I felt that there was a good flow to the story, although we are getting numerous viewpoints and experiences. This author certainly had me feeling very strongly about the characters. Calli’s father, Griff, is abusive to his family and I immediately disliked his character. While Calli, her brother, and her mother are very close, Griff does not fit into this loving unit. He works away from home, but shakes up their home when he returns. Did you feel a strong and immediate dislike for this character, as well?
BECKY Absolutely, there was nothing to like about this hateful man. I applaud the author for creating such a strong feeling for a character. However, I was a little disappointed that, for the most part, the characters where one dimensional. I like how the brother, Ben, was developed and I connected to him more than with Calli. Who stole your heart in this story? PAM I definitely connected to Calli’s brother more than any other
character. We learn more about him as we follow his memories and concerns while he searches for Calli. He was in such a challenging spot, trying to be the protector while still a young boy. He also regretted normal brotherly behavior as he searched and worried for his sister. He loves his sibling, but sometimes he wanted a little space; sometimes she embarrassed him; sometimes he wanted to appear more grown up. Don’t you feel that these are typical challenges most siblings face?
BECKY I agree, and especially for an older sibling. Maybe we connect more with Ben because he is in a difficult spot that is not as obvious as the disappearance of the two girls. He is often trying
to defend both sister and mother. Abuse is a part of this story and although it’s not extremely graphic this may be difficult for some readers. However, it could also provide some interesting discussion for a book club gathering. What are your feelings about Calli’s mother? I am conflicted with this character. At times I was angry at her for not defending her children but on the other hand I understand that it’s not easy to leave, or live in an abusive relationship.
PAM I also had conflicted feelings about Calli’s mother. She
loved her children deeply and tried to create a caring and loving environment. When Griff was home and drinking, she would take her children on adventures that were special to all three. They had a very special bond that did not include him. Do you think this made Calli’s father more angry and violent?
BECKY I love that she tried to make the best out of a terrible situation. I don’t think that he cared whether they were home or not. He was probably glad to have them out of his way. There was one person that he definitely didn’t want his wife to be around, and that is the sheriff. He and Calli dated many years ago. Do you think the investigation suffered, or did it get more attention because of his connection with Calli? PAM He seemed like the type of person who would give his all to
any case such as this. However, he was certainly personally invested in the case, which made him focus wholly on the details. Griff wasn’t the only one who didn’t want the two around each other. The sheriff’s wife was very jealous of Calli’s mother and became angry when he worked on the case. This personal struggle made it difficult for him and forced him to choose between his job and his family. How did you feel about this part of the story?
BECKY It gave the story another twist but I could have done without this storyline. I would have preferred more development of the children’s stories. Although the topic of abuse is serious this was a good summer read. Tell me about this interesting book you chose for next month. Did you say that there are three authors? PAM The Forgotten Room: A Novel is written by three authors,
who also happen to be close friends. Karen White, Beatriz Williams and Lauren Willig worked together to create this story of three different women in different eras. They are linked together through mysterious circumstances and we will uncover their secrets in this story. WWW.LONETREEMAGAZINE.COM 12
JUNE 2016
BECKY This story jumps right into the mystery as we meet Calli. Something happened when she was younger that has caused her to become a selective mute. What did you think about this dual mystery? We have the primary storyline about the missing girls but then we wait as the layers are peeled back to reveal the experience that caused this little girl to stop talking.
