June is a very special time. Not only does it mark the beginning of the Summer season with longer days and ample warmth, but it is also the time of year when we get to celebrate our dads. Father’s day is often noted as a time to buy a new grill, take dad to a ball game or perhaps get him that talking fish that hangs on the wall. This year, I’d challenge us all to explore Father’s day a little deeper and acknowledge more than just the men we celebrate on this day, but also the gifts they give. Fathers have such a deep impact on their children and the future of those generations that it is fitting to have a day when we can spoil our dads. In some ways society has drawn us away from acknowledging the uniqueness and importance that fathers serve in our lives. Nothing against moms, but dads fill a role specific to them and together with moms work to create a power team set to impart greatness on their kids. I was fortunate to have been born to an incredible dad. He taught me, through his own actions, what words like honor, compassion, dedication, perseverance and love meant. His wiliness to serve others and his caring to those around us made him shine as someone I wanted to be more like. Here is my challenge for all of us in June. When wishing that special “dad” a happy Father’s day this year, specifically thank him for one way he has impacted your life. Let him know that without him, you would not be who you are today.

Celebrate how his influence on you will make our world a better place. Then, take that gift...the gift of a positive impact he made on you and pass it along to someone else. If your dad is a hard worker, then go out and work a little harder than normal to honor him. If your dad is generous to others, then make a donation to his favorite charity. If your dad loves you and others unconditionally, then be a beacon of love and affection to someone who needs it. In short, take what makes your dad special and use that gift to positively impact our world. This would be the finest gift possible for Father’s day this year. As for my dad, I want to simply say THANK YOU. Without him I would not understand our role as citizens. I would not strive to leave our world better than it was before. Without him, my life would not be what it is today. Thanks for your sacrifices, your love, and for putting up with me when I was young...and not so young. Happy Father’s day to all the dads out there!

JUNE 2016

What did you have for dinner last night? It’s a safe bet that it wasn’t Seared Sea Scallops, Jalapeño Catfish, Braised Celery Root “Au Poivre” or a decadent, 12 Hour Lamb Shank. It’s also probably not likely that you started your meal with Truffle Fries or BBQ Pulled Pork Poutine, or paired your dinner fare with an expertly crafted “No Substitutions” Martini made with Infused Cucumber Rosemary Gin. If none of those mouth watering options were on your table, don’t worry, they can be tonight. The Old Stone Church, a Castle Rock Historical and culinary landmark, has been bringing seasonally fresh and excitingly creative menu options to delighted patrons for forty years. The restaurant’s humble beginnings was as an actual church, the town’s first, in the late 1800’s. Built from local ryholite stone, the church was dedicated on December 16, 1888. About thirty years later, local families donated the gorgeous, stain glass windows. By the 1960’s, the small church’s congregation had outgrown its walls and a new church location was chosen and built using the original alter and cornerstone. The Old Stone Church remained vacant until 1975 when remodeling began to transform it into a restaurant. The choir loft was expanded to seat guests and the confessional was transitioned into a famous table for two. If you’ve already dined at the Old Stone Church, you know what heavenly delights await you. If not, it’s high time you did! Head over for lunch, dinner or just to grab some small bites and a wonderful drink at The Chaplain’s Bar. Open Tues-Thurs 5-9pm, Friday & Saturday 5-10pm Open for Lunch Tue-Sat 11am-2pm & The Chaplain’s Bar is open Tuesday-Saturday 11am-Close 210 3rd Street – 303.688.9000 – oscrestaurant.com

IT’S JUST DUCKY!

The biggest annual fundraiser for the local Castle Rock Rotary and one of Castle Rock’s best known and loved events is back! The 2016 Rotary Ducky Derby will once again make a splash, kicking off this year at 11am on Saturday, June 11th. Proceeds from this event support local Castle Rock Charities including the Douglas/Elbert County Task Force, Women’s Crisis Center and Wellspring. One ticket gets you one numbered Ducky. All these swiftly swimming and “highly trained” Duckys are dumped into Plum Creek and the race to the finish commences! Ticket holders of the first three Duckys across the line win cash prizes! First place wins $2000 and a chance to win $1,000,000, 2nd place wins $750 and a chance to win a new car and third place wins $250! You do NOT need to be in attendance to win, winners will be contacted by phone – so keep your ticket to determine if you’re a Ducky Derby Champion! Tickets can be purchased from any Rotarian or from 10am-2pm on Saturday and Sunday in front of King Soopers (Castle Pines Parkway, Founders/I-25 and Ridge Road.) Tickets can also be purchased at both locations of the Castle Rock Bank, Mama Lisa’s Little Italy and the Castle Rock Senior Center. Any remaining tickets will be available on race day. The event runs from 11am-5pm in Downtown Castle Rock at Festival Park (Perry and 2nd Street) with the Ducky Derby commencing at 3pm. Come on out with the whole family to check out all the vendors and fun to be had – and stay for the Derby. Maybe your Ducky will be a Lucky Ducky this year! Melissa Anciaux – Staff Writer/Editor for Douglas County Libraries What do you get when you mix enthusiastic teens who love reading and adventure with dedicated library staff? A truly novel experience, or more specifically, NovelCon — an immersive, interactive event for book lovers and pop culture enthusiasts. The second annual NovelCon takes place Friday, June 24, from 6-9 p.m. at Douglas County Libraries in Castle Rock (Philip S. Miller branch, 100 S. Wilcox St.).

JUNE 2016

The idea for NovelCon originated with the Philip S. Miller library’s Teen Library Council (TLC), whose facilitator is Youth Librarian Lori Crocker. This group of 12 teens wanted to capture the spirit of the popular Denver Comic Con, while making it an engaging experience for fellow book lovers. The titles chosen for NovelCon — including “The

Maze Runner,” “The Lunar Chronicles,” “Doctor Who,” “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings” to name a few — have such wide appeal, participants of all ages can find something to enjoy. Guests are encouraged to dress up as their favorite fictional character and enter the NovelCon Cosplay contest. This after-hours event has been in the works for a year. Various interactive experiences throughout the library will transport participants into the stories they love. They can survive a night in the maze from “The Maze Runner”; engage in lightsaber battles in a Death Star setting from “Star Wars”; climb aboard a spaceship for sphero races from “The Lunar Chronicles”; enter the TARDIS and translate Gallifreyan tokens for jewelry

and key chains from “Doctor Who”; compete in a Hobbit Hole One Ring Toss from “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings”; and more. Guests can also get creative with arts and crafts and win prizes. Last year’s program received rave reviews. Said one fifth-grader from a local Castle Rock elementary school: “Who would have ever thought that the library could be this awesome!” This sentiment was echoed by the many guests who attended the inaugural event. Douglas County Libraries is a passionate advocate for literacy and lifelong learning. For more information on NovelCon, call 303791-7323 or visit DouglasCountyLibraries.org.
