THANK YOU

magazine

July is a very special time of year for me. It is a month that reminds me to say “Thank You” as often as possible. You may be thinking, “why would a month remind you to be outwardly appreciative?” Well, for two reasons.

JULY 2016 VOLUME 12

and impress her. Several years passed and I must have had a bit of an impression and she agreed to go to my Senior Prom with me, a fact that I am eternally grateful for since she was (and still is) way out of my league. After graduation several more years passed when I had the realization that this unique and special woman was not only my best friend, but someone I could not live without. So I planned a special proposal and she agreed to become my wife.

First, the celebration of our freedom during independence day is a great reminder of how lucky we are for the sacrifices that have been made to create and guarantee our freedom. We should all show gratitude for these sacrifices with our actions.

ISSUE 7

During this time (and especially during election season) it is important for all of us to say THANK YOU with our deeds and actions. It is very easy to get wrapped up in the negative aspects of our freedom and forget to appreciate these rights. July is a month where we are reminded how fortunate we are to have the ability to voice and share our opinions and thoughts.

PUBLISHER MIKE WAID

Second, this month has very special meaning to me personally as it is the month I celebrate a very special time in my life, my wedding anniversary.

When I was just a young buck in high school, a wise man of only fourteen years of age, I met an incredible young lady. She was this cute little blonde who quietly sat in my French class. I didn’t know much about her other than she was an athlete, had very light blonde hair, incredible blue eyes, an infectious smile and was very shy.

Every July I remember that special time in my life. This year marks the 20th year since that shy little athlete chose me to spend the rest of her life with. What she didn’t realize at the time is that she became more than my wife, she became my everything. My heart, my soul, my reason for doing everything I do in the world. This July I challenge our readers to love a little more this month. Specifically tell those around you how they make you a better person, thus making our world a better place. And when you do that you will quickly see how we are all surrounded by Saints and Angels...those who make our lives complete and give us a sense of purpose. For my best friend, my partner, my everything...Pamela, I love you with all my heart and THANK YOU for giving me a reason to be. Happy anniversary my love...thanks for choosing me to go through life with.

I got to know her in French class and even watched a couple of her soccer games to try

EXPERIENCEPARKER SEARCHPARKERhistory SULPHUR GULCH BRIDGE

Parker residents drive by it, walk or bike over it nearly every day. The Sulphur Gulch Bridge is one of Parker’s most recognizable landmarks. The original bridge over Sulphur Gulch was built in 1908. At the time, the road was a major artery from Denver to Franktown and locations further south. The shallow arched bridge was made of a ‘new’ material at a time when the turn of the century saw an explosion of concrete bridge construction, attributable in large part to one American designer – Daniel B. Luten. The photo includes a horse-drawn carriage and a Model T in the foreground. The large concrete pillar, now resting on this site, was unearthed by local resident Denver Pope, while doing some excavation in

Sulphur Gulch. Attached to the pillar is the original 1908 dedication plaque. Courtesy of the Town of Parker www.townofparker.org

A Garden Lark is a slightly hidden gem in Parker. The seasonal garden center (open May through September) offers a curated selection of annuals, perennials and locally grown organic herbs and vegetables. While owner Kerry Workman loves tending to the plants, ensuring they are healthy and hearty, the real joy she experiences is sharing the love of gardening with her visitors. Some haven’t much experience with gardening in Colorado; which can be challenging with our unpredictable climate and curious wildlife to contend with at times. Kerry enjoys introducing a new plant or color to someone looking to create a stunning container garden or garden bed. Quite often she’s the one learning something new that a visitor shares with her. Kerry also offers free potting of purchased plants if a customer brings in their pot(s). It’s all about personal attention and a great selection of plants to engage the imagination and create that beautiful outdoor space! Customers of A Garden Lark would agree and rave that A Garden Lark is a ”warm, inviting atmosphere, with a wonderful variety of simply beautiful flowers and arrangements. Love it!” Audrey Hepburn once said, “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” Kerry Workman’s passion is to help all her visitors’ tomorrows come alive with color and beauty from the plants and flowers she helps them select at A Garden Lark. This month at the PACE Center, you can experience one of the most beloved musicals of all time, live and in person. Grease is hitting the stage with Sandy, Danny, the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds! When the curtain goes up, it will be 1959 and the high school romance between Sandy and Danny will play out with the soundtrack of songs everyone knows and loves like “You’re the One That I Want,” “Summer Nights” and “Hopelessly Devoted.” Fans of the blockbuster 1978 movie will be pleasantly surprised with a few twists and turns that differentiate the musical from the film, as the production is based on the stage version of the Broadway show. All your favorite songs are included as well as a couple from the original score that may not be as familiar. Please note that this musical does contain mild adult language and themes. The show will open on Friday, July 15th and run through Saturday, July 31st. Showtimes and tickets can be found at parkerarts.org. This month in Parker, GREASE is the word!

Coming Soon

The New Douglas County Library in

Parker

Douglas County Libraries (DCL) broke ground

on its new Parker location just over a year ago, and construction is now nearing completion! This highly anticipated new library at 20105 East Mainstreet was designed with the Parker community in mind and beautifully reflects the area’s growth and demand for innovative library spaces and services. It’s the classic library — with a twist! Here’s just some of what you can expect at DCL in Parker.

Library space — times two

The library is doubling in size, from 20,000 sq. ft. to roughly 40,000 sq. ft. on two floors. The first floor houses family collections and spaces, including a dedicated Kids Corner for Storytimes and interactive play — even a baby “pool,” where infants can crawl and explore within the safety and confines of a rounded bumper zone. That space is adjacent to a structural wall that kids can play in, on and around with some interactive and tactile educational features. Also on the first floor is the Studio media lab, currently known as Fusion. This state-of-the-art digital creativity lab is where library cardholders of all ages and skill levels can create various products for fun or business purposes, such as anime videos, musical compositions, short films, or video resumes. There’s even the capability to digitize old home videos and convert VHS to DVD, and much more! The second floor houses the adult and young adult materials, along with a quiet reading den complete with comfortable furnishings and a fireplace. Other public spaces upstairs include two conference rooms and a community event room that opens onto a small, furnished terrace with scenic views to the west. Interspersed on both floors are a number of study rooms and niches for collaborative learning. The library also offers laptop vending using your library card — check one out and plug in at the laptop bar upstairs.

Outdoor amenities

Patrons will be pleased with the library’s much larger parking area, with approximately 163 parking spaces at the building and more accessible in an adjoining park, bringing the number of spaces available to about 200. And a drive-through book drop makes returning materials quick and easy! All of this — and much more — is coming soon! DCL in Parker is projected to open in September. Prior to its Grand Opening, the library will close for three weeks in preparation for the move. Patrons can sign up to receive email updates about construction, the library’s closure, available services and Storytimes during the closure, and the Grand Opening via DouglasCountyLibraries.org/Newsletters. Bogan Flats

Bogan Flats Campground (part of White River National Forest) stretches along the Crystal River in a valley of aspen groves, towering Ponderosa Pine, spruce, and willow. The setting is ideal for larger groups seeking recreation and relaxation in White River National Forest. Sites in the campground are widely spaced and offer a nice mixture of open and shaded spots, with several sites at the river’s edge. The group site is located away from the main campground, offering a more private location. Photo credit: recreation.gov

Echo Lake

Echo Lake Campground is located on the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests in central Colorado near its namesake lake at the base of Mount Evans along Hwy 103. Visitors enjoy hiking, fishing and taking scenic drives along Mount Evans Road. Echo Lake sits in a spruce forest near the shores of Echo Lake. The campground’s 10,600’ elevation creates cool to chilly nights, even in summer, and its location on a mountain pass makes for windy conditions year-round. Photo credit: recreation.gov

Guanella Pass

Guanella Pass Campground is located about 7 miles south of Georgetown on the South Fork of Clear Creek on the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway. Located at an elevation of 10,900 feet on the Arapaho Roosevelt National Forest, visitors to the campground can also enjoy hiking and fishing in the area. The Guanella Pass Scenic and Historic Byway follows an old wagon route that linked the mining towns of Georgetown and Grant, Colorado. Photo credit: recreation.gov

Molly Brown Campground at Turquoise Lake

Named after the “unsinkable” Molly Brown on the Titanic, Molly Brown Campground, on the eastern shore of Turquoise Lake, sits in a shaded lodgepole pine forest. The campground is ideal for enjoying the popular recreation lake and offers access to boating, fishing, hiking and water skiing. The famous Molly Brown lived in the town of Leadville, just 5 miles east of the campground. She became wealthy from her husband’s mining success and took on a life as a philanthropist, socialite and activist. Photo credit: recreation.gov

Ruedi Reservoir

Ruedi Dam and Reservoir are on the Fryingpan River about 15 miles east of Basalt, Colorado. The Reservoir is on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains, where snow-capped mountain peaks reach over 13,000 feet and the thickly forested slopes provide an exceptionally beautiful background for recreation activities. Recreation facilities consist of 4 campgrounds accommodating 81 campsites and 2 boat-launching ramps. Surface available for recreation includes 997 acres. Primary recreation activities include camping, motorized boating, sailing, and fishing. Access is good. Game fish species available include rainbow trout, brown trout, and mackinaw trout. Facilities closed in winter due to ice and snow. Photo credit: Basalt Chamber of Commerce

Tour de Ladies

Women-only Cycling Event Returns to Douglas County The Tour de Ladies women-only cycling event is excited to return to Douglas County on July 9th! The Tour de Ladies empowers women through pedal power by encouraging women to be physically active, train for the event, and participate at the level they feel comfortable. It also empowers women through the financial contribution of the event’s proceeds to a local nonprofit that primarily serves women – the Crisis Center.

JULY 2016

This year the event will begin and end at Parker’s PACE Center – a premier venue for events in Douglas County. The route, which will be fully supported with “SAG in drag” (men in skirts to help change flat tires and provide other on-course assistance) and aid stations, features options of 30 miles and a 62.5 mile metric century for cyclists of all levels. All riders

27 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE

will receive refreshments and support throughout both routes. They’ll also get a finish gift, a goodie bag from sponsors and a ticket to the post-ride party that will include lunch and beverages. “Tour de Ladies welcomes women who are new to cycling and those who ride regularly,” said Becki Rupp, chairwoman of this year’s Tour de Ladies event. “The two courses offer manageable challenges that past participants have given rave reviews for scenery, signage and on-course support. We’re excited to support the Crisis Center again this year, with proceeds and additional donations going to help their work toward a world free of violence.” Last year’s Tour de Ladies event had 420 registered riders and raised more than $13,000 for the Crisis Center, which provides programs and services

to domestic violence victims, and organizers intend to surpass that this year. “It really takes organizations like Tour de Ladies to assist us and be a part of the fight against domestic violence to help us achieve our mission,” said Jennifer Walker, Executive Director of the Crisis Center. “We need this kind of support to build a strong, safe and healthy community.” The Tour de Ladies is hosted by the Colorado Riders Club, a recreational cycling club in Parker that supports safe cycling practices and the social benefits of group cycling. Tour de Ladies is a fund of the Douglas County Community Foundation. Courtesy of Becky Rupp, tourdeladies@gmail.com

About MuckFest® MS MuckFest MS is the FUN mud run with the best obstacles. No special training or equipment required: just bring a pair of sneakers and your sense of humor. Participants run on a well-designed 5K course, featuring super-sized obstacles and mud from start to finish. The MuckFest MS series supports people living with multiple sclerosis, and brings us closer to a world free of MS. 100% of fundraising dollars support the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s mission to stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. After getting dirty on the course, runners (called “muckers”) go to the Scrub Your Muck clean-up station and then head over to the MuckFestival area, refreshed by the Traveler Beer Company, to down a Traveler beer (or soda) or two, grab some grub, and decide, once and for all, who had the most epic spill of the day. Children get to join in the fun with a mucky, pint-sized play lot just for kids called the Lil’ Muckers.

• The “MS” part of MuckFest MS stands for multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. • Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects over 2.3 million people worldwide. • Last year, the Society invested $54 million to support more than 380 new and ongoing research projects around the world. • Thanks to the determined commitment of researchers around the world and dedicated public support, there are now FDA-approved disease-modifying treatment options for relapsing MS, the most common form of the disease, as well as an International Progressive MS Alliance established to speed therapies for this still untreatable form of the disease.

FINDING A TROPICAL FRIEND Around Easter, it’s chicks and bunnies. After reading “The Black Stallion” it might be a pony or maybe even the incessant begging for a puppy after watching “Beethoven” or “Because of Winn Dixie.” After this summer’s blockbuster movies come out, there may be another pet on the “Most Wanted” list. The Paracanthurus Hepatus, Blue Tang, Regal Blue Tang, Pacific Blue Tang or Hippo Tang is an iconic marine aquarium fish and raising one can be an amazing hobby. Your friends at Tropical Pet Oasis wanted to share the extensive care level required for these amazing and iconic fish.

The Hippo Tang is native to the Indo Pacific region, living in highly oxygenated and nutrient rich reefs. These beautiful fish can grow to be a twelve inch adult and live up to 20 years and can easily become a family member who will recognize you when you enter the room. The Hippo Tang loves to have many hiding places in an aquarium; however they are also an active

If you’re a beginner, you may want to start with a similar-looking, lower maintenance fish such as a Yellow Tail Blue Damsel. Hippo Tangs come from a reef environment and will require clean, high oxygen water with a strong flow. Good filtration with a protein skimmer will achieve clean and oxygenated salt water and there are several internal water movers that can achieve a reef like wave in your home aquarium. These omnivorous fish will require a proper nutrition of Seaweed, Frozen Mysis or Brine, and a

prepared diet for herbivore fish. The proper diet will insure a healthy, happy fish. Hippo Tangs can be highly susceptible to parasitic and lateral line diseases. In choosing a Hippo Tang, always look for a healthy fish with a full body and no signs of parasites (white spots.) Don’t be afraid to ask to see the fish eat before you take it home. A healthy fish that eats well is a new friend you will enjoy watching grow in your aquarium. Before purchasing any pet, it’s important to know what you are taking on and how to properly care for the new member of your household, whether they have scales, fur or fins! If you have any questions about the iconic Regal Blue Tang or any other tropical fish wonders, stop in and ask Tommy at Tropical Pet Oasis, Parker’s local family owned fish store, where there is always something fishy going on.

DR.DANFORtoday Fixing the Trickle of Worry Thomas Carlyle wrote, “Our main business is not to see what lies dimly at a distance, but to do what lies clearly at hand.” Worry has been defined as “a small trickle of fear that meanders through the mind until it cuts a channel into which all other thoughts are drained.” Anxiety and fear are underlying conditions of greater mental health conditions like PTSD and panic attacks. They start with a trickle. If you ever have doubted the power of a “trickle” think about the Grand Canyon. It is the result of millions of years of trickling water. So it is with worry. It can begin as a little fear and when it is allowed to grow, can be blown up into

something that can be paralyzing through catastrophic thoughts and fears of the unknown. What started as something that “might be” grows to something that “will be” without any filters. What can we do to fix the trickle of worry? What are some filters we can put in place to keep a trickle from becoming a stream or a river? Here are four practical coping strategies. FIRST Understand the nature of worry’s paralyzing grip and actively seek to keep things in perspective by asking questions like, “what is the evidence that our worry

is true?” or “what are the facts in the situation?” In effect we steer our minds from the overwhelming emotional rut of worry toward thinking logically about the situation. SECOND Seek to influence what can be changed with the problem we are concerned about and accept what we have no control over, and let the problem go. We need to learn to accept what we cannot change. This can be harder than it sounds for some of us whose “trickle” is now a stream of worry, but it must be done. Rather than reaching into the future and seeing the worst, we need specific, intellectual interventions to stop the stream from becoming a river of worry. Interrupting the worry when it happens with a healthier, happier thought is a good tool to use. It helps us to reorient our perspective. THIRD Practice living one day at a time. Look for the good and enjoyable aspects of everyday life. There are aspects of each day and every situation that we can be thankful for. No matter how small, we need to look for these things and spend the same amount of energy that we would give to worry and focus it on what is positive. Rather than anticipating the worst, anticipate the best. FOURTH Get busy with some physical exercise or change our physical surroundings. Go for a walk, bike ride, or take a drive in the car. In other words, we need a time-out and a change of scenery from our worries. A change of pace interrupts our thoughts and feelings of worry enough to get us out of the “worry rut.” These are a few coping strategies that can help us all fix the trickle of worry. Remember, worry is like a rocking chair; it will give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.

THEBOOKENDS

with Pam & Becky

The Forgotten Room: A Novel

By Karen White, Beatriz Williams, and Lauren Willig Dr. Kate Schuyler works in a private hospital in Manhattan in 1945, when a wounded soldier is brought in with a leg injury. Kate feels an instant connection to him and is shocked when he acts as though he recognizes her before losing consciousness. She finds a picture that is exactly her image in his belongings and this begins a search for answers. The mansion which houses the private hospital holds secrets about two women who seem to be linked with Kate. Olive was a servant in the great mansion during the Gilded Age. Lucy Young’s search for a father she never knew brought her to the mansion during the Jazz Age. How are these women connected and what secrets do they hold? PAM

This book caught my attention as soon as I read the summary of the three intertwined stories. I enjoyed traveling between the different times and the different roles the women held in society. However, I initially found it challenging to keep everyone straight in the different storylines. Becky, did you find this as well?

BECKY I’m glad that you mentioned that nuance. At the

beginning of the book it was a struggle to see each story develop and separate the characters. However, it was worth the confusion. We follow three generations of women, in three time frames (1892, 1920 and 1944), in one New York mansion. This is the first time that I have read a book with three authors. I had to do some digging to gather a little information on this trio of accomplished ladies. It seems that they are all friends and after an evening together they decided to write this story. They would write a chapter and then pass it on to the next. It wasn’t until the end that they all came together to polish the final draft. To date, it is a secret which story was written by whom! Could you tell that there were multiple authors or did the story flow well?

PAM Thank you for looking into this...I love it! What a great way for friends to share in something special. I wondered if the authors each took a character and divided the story in that manner. But, I couldn’t sense a significant difference in the writing of each time frame. I don’t think I would be able to discern the different authors of each chapter. It is quite impressive that they achieved the flow as they merged three styles. The authors states that it didn’t feel like work because they had too much fun. Thinking back to the story, do you feel that their enjoyment of the process of writing together was apparent in the book?

JULY 2016

BECKY I know that authors often have a team that help develop a book so maybe this is not all that uncommon. However, they clearly are well connected and there was a common thread throughout the story so their joy was certainly evident. Was there a timeframe that you enjoyed more than the others? PAM Although I enjoyed parts of all three time periods and their characters, my favorite was following Kate in 1945. I loved the determination of her character and trying to piece together what had happened in the past to bring her and Captain Ravenel 37 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE

together. Did you enjoy the doctor or was there another character you connected with more strongly?

BECKY I too enjoyed all three storylines but my favorite was the

1890 story with Olive. She is a young girl that becomes a servant in the Pratt mansion. Her interest is not in a life of service but to seek revenge for her father. He designed this beautiful mansion but was never paid for his service. All three stories have lies, secrets and romance. There was quite a bit of information to keep track of during this story. What did you think about the male characters? Were they as interesting as our three ladies?

PAM They were as interesting as the ladies, in my opinion. These characters were also as varied as our ladies. Each had a very different role and goal in his time period. However, they were all intricately involved in this complicated story. Did any of these gentlemen stand out to you? BECKY I was most drawn to Captain Ravenel in the 1945 storyline. He was not completely coherent when he was brought to the hospital so this situation simmered for a while. Kate was a serious lady and this relationship exposed her softer side. This story has more than just romance. What type of reader would you recommend this book to? PAM This story would appeal to readers of many different genres. We have romance, mystery, as well as some historical and cultural references of the different eras. It was interesting to compare and contrast the roles and expected behaviors of women during each time period. Did you feel that these three female characters behaved as expected? Or were they pushing against the societal norms of their times? BECKY All three women were strong and determined. In their

own way, they each pushed against the mainstream idea of a woman’s role. I loved their feisty spirit and enjoyed the strong female characters. Let’s continue with this theme next month as we read Relativity by Antonia Hayes. Claire is a single mom to Ethan, an extremely intelligent young boy. She has given up everything to be a committed mom but the past is something that she can no longer hide.
