Back to School It has started...that time of year where all the families in the area start the scramble to find everything on the school supply list, hit the stores for new clothes to start the year off right and take a moment to ponder “where did the Summer go?”
This annual ritual is one that is met with both excitement and sadness. As a father of two sons, one of which will be a Senior in high school this year, I am dumfounded at how fast time has flown by. I am excited for the new adventures for my boys...excuse me, young men... and what the future holds but at the same time I am sad that they are growing up. Going to school for the first time was such a right of passage. I can still see my oldest son holding hands with our neighbor’s oldest daughter on the first day of school as they got on the bus together. His backpack firmly in place and her pig tails flopping back and forth. The start of their education... the growth of their lives as people. Such an excitement coupled with a palpable nervousness and their willingness to jump in with both feet to become “learners” at school. Parents also undergo huge changes this time of year. For those whose kids go off to school for the first time it will probably be filled with tears. For others it may be a time to take a big sigh of relief. In either case, emotions will abound.
During this transitional time, I have a challenge for our readers with kids going back to school...start an IMPACT JOURNAL with your kids. It is real simple, each week write down something they did to impact the world around them. Create a game of it...every day ask them to do one thing to make the world around them a little bit better. At the end of the week, talk with them about which of these things had the biggest impact on the world and write it down in the journal. It could be something as simple as holding the door open for someone...or perhaps spending a few minutes helping a classmate who is struggling with homework...or introducing themselves to a new kid and making a new friend. By doing this, not only will you create an incredible keepsake to remember how much your student has contributed to the world, but it will also help teach them the importance of making the world a better place. I have a feeling that in the process of doing this, each of us parents will probably learn a thing or two from our kids about what it means to truly be compassionate and caring for our community.
Enjoy this “back to school” season and remember to make an impact in our world by doing something everyday to make our community better than it was the day before.

EXPERIENCEPARKER SEARCHPARKERhistory THE POUPPIRT HOUSE
The Pouppirt House was built in 1918 by William H. O’Brien, Ed Pouppirt’s brother-in-law. It was one of the first homes in the area to use acetylene gas for interior lighting. Ed came to Douglas County around 1901, where he worked for a time on ranches near Parker. He was born in Leavenworth, Kansas, one of seven children of French parents. He farmed the land until his marriage to Lena Bell Kern in 1904. The Pouppirts were ranchers, farmers and developers. They eventually acquired 7,000 acres in Douglas and Arapahoe counties, where they ran dairy operations until 1917 and also raised herds of beef cattle. The Pouppirts developed the Pouppirt Addition to Parker, which was across the
tracks to the north from the Rhode Island House. Their holdings included the 20Mile House property, which they bought in 1917 from Neal Duncan. After Ed died in 1942, Lena donated the land east of the J. S. Parker Cemetery between the cemetery and Parker Road. The Pouppirts are both buried in the J. S. Parker Cemetery. They had no children. From Mainstreet and Parker Road, head north to Lincoln Avenue. Turn left to Dransfeldt. The Pouppirt House is location about a tenth of a mile down the road on the left. RORY’S DINER
Once in a while, a local spot comes along that becomes a community staple. In Downtown Parker, Rory’s Diner recently opened its doors and is quickly winning over guests with excellent food and outstanding service. Better than being able to order the BlueberryLemon French Toast or Vanilla Streusel Pancakes all day long is the story behind Rory’s Diner, Rory’s Catering and Rory’s Rollin’ Food Truck. All are namesakes of Rory Dean Ivey, nephew of owner Jeff Holland. At just 18 months old Rory was diagnosed with Pleomorphic Rhabdomyosarcoma and spent the next year in treatment. Two days after returning from his Make A Wish trip to Disney in 1999, he passed away, peacefully going while laying on his mother’s chest. To keep his memory alive and help others fight that courageous fight, Jeff not only created his businesses in Rory’s name, but also formed Rory’s Stupid Cancer Foundation, which donates to Children’s Hospital and the Make A Wish Foundation; this is Rory’s legacy. In this case, supporting local business is doing so much more. Rory’s believes that great food doesn’t have to come at a great price. They want to serve you an amazing meal, in a great atmosphere and in doing so, keep Rory’s legacy going strong. Rory’s Diner is located in the Victorian Peaks Building – 11020 Pikes Peak Drive. They are open Mon-Fri 6am-9pm, Saturday 8am-9pm and Sunday 8am-7pm (summer hours). For more information visit them online at www.rorysdiner.net. 5 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE

The smell of chlorine and sunblock may still linger, but it’s once again time to check off school supply lists, make sure all the tennis shoes still fit and head out for the So Long to Summer 5K/10K & Family Trek! A Parker staple, this annual event is a great chance to grab your friends, get out and run (or walk) to celebrate the end of summer. The 5K and 10K races are sanctioned, professionally timed events while the Family Trek is approximately 1.3 miles of nice and easy fun. All registered participants will receive a T-Shirt and a delicious post race pancake breakfast – that alone is worth the walk! For little runners (under 8) who want to get in on the fun, the Huntington Learning Center Kids’ Dash follows the race with no registration necessary. Packet pick up will be August 12th from 5-7pm at the Parker Fieldhouse or on race day beginning at 7am. This event is held, rain or shine on Saturday, August 13th. Olympic Dreams
AUGUST 2016
Every four years a majority of the world gathers to cheer their country’s athletes as they represent in the Summer Olympics. Many of us have always been fascinated with the Olympics. No matter if you are cheering a specific sport or for “Team USA”, we all become part of the “thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.” I have fond memories of watching the LA Olympics on TV when I was 10 years old. I went out back and dug up a long jump pit so I could practice…knowing that someday I would be representing the USA as a long jumper. I could hear the crowds cheering and feel that gold medal around my neck. Of course, life took me 11 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE
a different direction than a career in Track but my love for the Olympics has remained. As we watch the Olympics this year you may not realize but our youth do have options for training in Olympic sports…even without digging up their parents back yard. We have compiled a list of select clubs and programs in the area that provide training in various Olympic sports. Who knows, perhaps your young athlete will become a gold medal Olympian and all of us can watch them thank you for fostering their dreams of victory! Here’s to bringing home the GOLD for team USA and all those who support them!

5th Annual Parker Quest Is Coming! How well do you know Parker? Do you know that before Douglas County Libraries in Parker was moved to its current location in the former Crossroads Bowling Lanes, it was in a freestanding building on Mainstreet? And that the books were housed in the Ruth Memorial Chapel before that? Do you know where the new library—opening in September—is located?
Test your Parker history IQ by answering these and other interesting questions during Parker Quest, a scavenger-hunt-style event on Saturday, August 27th, from 9-11 a.m. Families, teams and individuals will enjoy an activity-filled walking tour of downtown Parker while exploring the town’s colorful history, culture and heritage. This annual Quest brings long-time residents and newcomers together to participate in fun activities and learn more about the community. This year, the journey begins (and ends) at the Schoolhouse, 19650 E. Mainstreet, where you’ll receive a passport of clues. Solve each clue to find the next location, making your way through places of interest scattered around downtown Parker. It’s an entertaining way to get to know all about Parker’s past—and future!

Do you know anyone who daydreams excessively, has trouble reading or comprehending, cannot complete tasks or who simply lacks motivation in school or life? Are they frustrated, struggling or simply acting out and you don’t know why? The problem could be a learning disability. Your brain is an amazing and complex system whose function can be compromised by a wide range of stressors, emotional trauma, genetics, physical injury or environmental factors which are all capable of reducing the brains ability to operate optimally and efficiently. Depending on the level of stress and the individual’s reaction to it, the brain may produce blockages of blood flow that would result in loss of organization and synchronization or brain function.

This leads to diagnoses of ADD, ADHD and Dyslexia as well as a host of other learning difficulties. Medication is most often prescribed in these cases but cannot correct the problems. Medication serves to reduce agitation and provide a bit more mental stamina during the day but generally doesn’t improve attention span or memory. Not finding a good fit or side effects often force parents to look for an alternative solution. There are many things out there to try and improve your brain function but most come with a very high cost, a lengthy treatment protocol or a host of exercises. And nothing can claim to open up blockages like Brain Integration Technique or BIT. BIT understands that it is not about intelligence it is about access; access to ALL of your brain function. Brain Integration Technique clears the paths and resets the timing of the brain, so what comes in through your eyes and ears travels to the correct part of the brain for processing. A completely integrated brain allows you to be successful in school, enjoy reading, liberation from labels and being a productive member of society. And Brain Integration Technique is a permanent solution. BIT works for students who struggle with things like test anxiety, impulsivity, or behavior problems relating to learning difficulties. It also can help athletes with hand-eye coordination and balance and concentration and even adults who have issues with organizational skills, focus, eye strain, memory issues or anxiety. Considering Brain Integration Technique may be the missing piece of the puzzle you have been trying to complete.

with Pam & Becky
Relativity
By Antonia Hayes Ethan is a brilliant young man with an intense interest in physics and astronomy. Although intelligent and mature, he struggles at connecting with his peers and is a bit of a loner. His mother Claire, has been raising him on her own and has sacrificed much to create a loving but protected world for him. His father has been absent from his life but Ethan’s curiosity is beginning to grow and he wants to know more about this man. Her carefully constructed life is about to tumble when Ethan gets sick and she is forced to confront secrets that have been buried for years. BECKY At first glance this book might look like it is for a science
enthusiast. Do you think that you have to love physics or astronomy to enjoy this story?
PAM I don’t think it is necessary to enjoy and engage in the story. However, it certainly enhances the details of the tale (I am speaking from personal experience as I do love physics and astronomy!). The author drew me into the book right away. Did you find this to be true for you, as well? BECKY I would never claim to love physics or astronomy but this story did pull me in quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the way this story developed. Ethan was delightfully written and stole my heart right away. He is considered a savant but was easy to relate to. What did you think about this precocious young boy? PAM I was also drawn to him from the beginning of the story. I agree with you, Becky; he was easy to relate to as we follow him through his daily routines, adventures, and discoveries. Ethan is being raised by his mother, a retired ballerina. What were your thoughts about this complex character? BECKY I like the way this character was developed. As I read I felt

like she was someone that I would be friends with and I applaud her commitment to be a great mom, but I did get angry with her later in the story. Claire’s relationship, or lack thereof, with Ethan’s father, and his family hit a nerve for me. For very different reasons, I grew up without my father in the picture but his family was an important part of my life so it ruffled my feathers. Claire has severed all ties with the whole family. However, now that Ethan is twelve there are questions that he wants answered and he would like to know more about his father. What did you think of this fractured relationship?
separation from the whole family especially Ethan’s grandfather. Clever Ethan also attempts to make a time machine to learn more about his history. What did you think about this addition to the story?
PAM I loved this aspect of the story, as it captured the type of thinking (with no limits) often seen in children. Ethan was so sure that he would be able to create a time machine to go back into his past and he lost no time in implementing his plan. He had spent some time in the hospital, where he had become fast friends with his roommate. She was a regular in the hospital, as she experienced frequent seizures. She was just what the doctor ordered for Ethan at this point in his life. He struggled to make friends and his one true friend had recently succumbed to peer pressure and alienated Ethan. Did you love this new friend? BECKY She was a darling addition to this story. Although a
fairly small character she had a large impact on Ethan’s journey. I was left wanting to know more about this little lady. I love that the author included the harsh reality of not being accepted by peers and the weight of an illness while you are young. That type of writing gave depth to the characters. There is a layer to this story that we won’t discuss as it would be better to put the pieces together as you read. I mention this only to highlight that this story would give a book club some interesting topics to discuss. The author based this story on some of her own experiences and maybe that is why it has such a good flow. I enjoyed this book and have recommended it to others. Would you be interested in another story by this first time author?
PAM I completely understood Claire’s reasons behind separating Ethan from his father and his family. However, as Ethan got older, he had many questions about his father and his past. He became more desperate to find answers to these questions, but Claire wanted to keep the past buried and keep Ethan away from the family. Ethan was determined to learn about his father and was able to find clues as he searched their home and his mother’s phone. Did you expect Ethan to follow his leads? Would you have done the same?
PAM I would be very interested in another story by this author. I was drawn into the story immediately and absolutely loved the science component! We will continue this theme of mothers and the children they love as we read We Never Asked for Wings by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Letty Espinosa must learn to be a mother to her children after many years of being a bystander in their lives. Will she be able to make this transition? Join us to find out!
BECKY Ethan had a significant clue fall into his lap so I wasn’t surprised that he continued his search. I didn’t have that much curiosity about my father because of my relationships with the rest of his family. Maybe that’s why I didn’t like her choice to create
