GRAPHIC DESIGN JAMESON HAMSMITH

It has started...that time of year where all the families in the area start the scramble to find everything on the school supply list, hit the stores for new clothes to start the year off right and take a moment to ponder “where did the Summer go?”

This annual ritual is one that is met with both excitement and sadness. As a father of two sons, one of which will be a Senior in high school this year, I am dumfounded at how fast time has flown by. I am excited for the new adventures for my boys...excuse me, young men... and what the future holds but at the same time I am sad that they are growing up. Going to school for the first time was such a right of passage. I can still see my oldest son holding hands with our neighbor’s oldest daughter on the first day of school as they got on the bus together. His backpack firmly in place and her pig tails flopping back and forth. The start of their education... the growth of their lives as people. Such an excitement coupled with a palpable nervousness and their willingness to jump in with both feet to become “learners” at school. Parents also undergo huge changes this time of year. For those whose kids go off to school for the first time it will probably be filled with tears. For others it may be a time to take a big sigh of relief. In either case, emotions will abound.

During this transitional time, I have a challenge for our readers with kids going back to school...start an IMPACT JOURNAL with your kids. It is real simple, each week write down something they did to impact the world around them. Create a game of it...every day ask them to do one thing to make the world around them a little bit better. At the end of the week, talk with them about which of these things had the biggest impact on the world and write it down in the journal. It could be something as simple as holding the door open for someone...or perhaps spending a few minutes helping a classmate who is struggling with homework...or introducing themselves to a new kid and making a new friend. By doing this, not only will you create an incredible keepsake to remember how much your student has contributed to the world, but it will also help teach them the importance of making the world a better place. I have a feeling that in the process of doing this, each of us parents will probably learn a thing or two from our kids about what it means to truly be compassionate and caring for our community.

Enjoy this “back to school” season and remember to make an impact in our world by doing something everyday to make our community better than it was the day before.

EXPERIENCECASTLEROCK CASTLEROCKhistory THE OWENS HOUSE

Built between 1875 and 1879, the Owens House was first used as a private residence and was converted to a hotel by David Owens, who was the home’s third owner, in 1879. Its prime location on Perry Street, across from the D&RG Depot, made it the perfect location for a hotel and it soon became Castle Rock’s very own “luxury hotel.” At the time, it was considered quite pricey, with the rates reaching as high as a whopping $2 per night! To draw in guests, Owens advertised the hotel as something of a health resort for those suffering from lung disease. Nearly a decade after he bought the home and converted it into his luxury hotel, David Owens deeded The Owens House to his wife in 1888. He died later that same year and his funeral was held in the hotel. Under new ownership in 1892, the hotel was renamed the Cottage Hotel or the

Cottage House. Sadly, it went bankrupt 43 years later in 1935, at the time of the Great Depression. After the bankruptcy, the hotel was converted into apartments.

CASTLEROCKlocal ROCK ON AT BOGEY’S WEST!

AUGUST 2016

It’s nice to find a place that seems familiar, a bit nostalgic and just plain fun. Bogey’s West in downtown Castle Rock has been that hub of fun nostalgia since they opened their doors on August, 8th, 1988. Even though the shop has relocated a few times, it’s remained on the same block in the historic heart of downtown and has been family owned and operated since that first day back on 8-8-88, when we all knew how to Party Like It’s 1999! Back then, there were used music stores almost everywhere, but music stores have all but disappeared in the age of instant downloads, music sites and apps and electronic everything. If you haven’t stopped in lately, or you’ve somehow missed out on stopping in at all before now, do yourself a favor and take a minute to come in and flip through the vinyls or check out the selection of CDs. Bogey’s West happily does special orders for both every Monday and new CD’s come in as soon as they’re released on Tuesdays. LPs come in every Thursday, excluding holidays. Come for the new and used music, but stay and shop for unique clothing and accessories, bags and jewelry. Bogey’s West boasts that they are “Your One Stop Hippie Shop” and are proud to have served the Castle Rock community for almost thirty years. Olympic Dreams

Every four years a majority of the world gathers to cheer their country’s athletes as they represent in the Summer Olympics. Many of us have always been fascinated with the Olympics. No matter if you are cheering a specific sport or for “Team USA”, we all become part of the “thrill of victory or the agony of defeat.”

I have fond memories of watching the LA Olympics on TV when I was 10 years old. I went out back and dug up a long jump pit so I could practice…knowing that someday I would be representing the USA as a long jumper. I could hear the crowds cheering and feel that gold medal around my neck. Of course, life took me a different direction ARCHERY Full Rut Archery 3900 Country Road 174 Parker, CO 80134 303-840-9271 fullrutarchery.com Youth Archery Academy Highlands Ranch, CO 303-522-3183 youtharcheryacademy.net BASKETBALL Nothing But Net 303-921-5301 nbncoaching.com BOXING Delgado’s Boxing Gym 2333 Delgany Street Denver, CO 80216 303-432-8994 delgadosgym.com TOS Boxing Gym 3910 South Kalamath Englewood, CO 80110 303-246-8749 tosboxing.com

As we watch the Olympics this year you may not realize but our youth do have options for training in Olympic sports…even without digging up their parents back yard. We have compiled a list of select clubs and programs in the area that provide training in various Olympic sports. with Pam & Becky

Relativity

By Antonia Hayes Ethan is a brilliant young man with an intense interest in physics and astronomy. Although intelligent and mature, he struggles at connecting with his peers and is a bit of a loner. His mother Claire, has been raising him on her own and has sacrificed much to create a loving but protected world for him. His father has been absent from his life but Ethan’s curiosity is beginning to grow and he wants to know more about this man. Her carefully constructed life is about to tumble when Ethan gets sick and she is forced to confront secrets that have been buried for years. BECKY At first glance this book might look like it is for a science

enthusiast. Do you think that you have to love physics or astronomy to enjoy this story?

PAM I don’t think it is necessary to enjoy and engage in the story. However, it certainly enhances the details of the tale (I am speaking from personal experience as I do love physics and astronomy!). The author drew me into the book right away. Did you find this to be true for you, as well? BECKY I would never claim to love physics or astronomy but this story did pull me in quickly. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the way this story developed. Ethan was delightfully written and stole my heart right away. He is considered a savant but was easy to relate to. What did you think about this precocious young boy? PAM I was also drawn to him from the beginning of the story. I agree with you, Becky; he was easy to relate to as we follow him through his daily routines, adventures, and discoveries. Ethan is being raised by his mother, a retired ballerina. What were your thoughts about this complex character? BECKY I like the way this character was developed. As I read I felt

AUGUST 2016

like she was someone that I would be friends with and I applaud her commitment to be a great mom, but I did get angry with her later in the story. Claire’s relationship, or lack thereof, with Ethan’s father, and his family hit a nerve for me. For very different reasons, I grew up without my father in the picture but his family was an important part of my life so it ruffled my feathers. Claire has severed all ties with the whole family. However, now that Ethan is twelve there are questions that he wants answered and he would like to know more about his father. What did you think of this fractured relationship?

separation from the whole family especially Ethan’s grandfather. Clever Ethan also attempts to make a time machine to learn more about his history. What did you think about this addition to the story?

PAM I loved this aspect of the story, as it captured the type of thinking (with no limits) often seen in children. Ethan was so sure that he would be able to create a time machine to go back into his past and he lost no time in implementing his plan. He had spent some time in the hospital, where he had become fast friends with his roommate. She was a regular in the hospital, as she experienced frequent seizures. She was just what the doctor ordered for Ethan at this point in his life. He struggled to make friends and his one true friend had recently succumbed to peer pressure and alienated Ethan. Did you love this new friend? BECKY She was a darling addition to this story. Although a

fairly small character she had a large impact on Ethan’s journey. I was left wanting to know more about this little lady. I love that the author included the harsh reality of not being accepted by peers and the weight of an illness while you are young. That type of writing gave depth to the characters. There is a layer to this story that we won’t discuss as it would be better to put the pieces together as you read. I mention this only to highlight that this story would give a book club some interesting topics to discuss. The author based this story on some of her own experiences and maybe that is why it has such a good flow. I enjoyed this book and have recommended it to others. Would you be interested in another story by this first time author?

PAM I completely understood Claire’s reasons behind separating Ethan from his father and his family. However, as Ethan got older, he had many questions about his father and his past. He became more desperate to find answers to these questions, but Claire wanted to keep the past buried and keep Ethan away from the family. Ethan was determined to learn about his father and was able to find clues as he searched their home and his mother’s phone. Did you expect Ethan to follow his leads? Would you have done the same?

PAM I would be very interested in another story by this author. I was drawn into the story immediately and absolutely loved the science component! We will continue this theme of mothers and the children they love as we read We Never Asked for Wings by Vanessa Diffenbaugh. Letty Espinosa must learn to be a mother to her children after many years of being a bystander in their lives. Will she be able to make this transition? Join us to find out!

BECKY Ethan had a significant clue fall into his lap so I wasn’t surprised that he continued his search. I didn’t have that much curiosity about my father because of my relationships with the rest of his family. Maybe that’s why I didn’t like her choice to create

A special thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced copy of Relativity in exchange for an honest review.
