We all love our community. We’ve chosen to call it home, raise a family, meet with friends and enjoy life. I am often asked by people if I have any suggestions on ways they can give back. With so many great local charities and nonprofit organizations there are many ways to leave a positve mark on our world. However, sometimes people don’t have the time or financial means to support local charities. If this is you, consider “keeping it local” as your way of giving back. We all have the power to make a significant impact on our community without really any extra effort. How, you may ask? It’s simple...when considering where to buy something always start with local. That’s it...simply choose to support local businsses first.

Did you know that, on average, when you spend one dollar at a locally owned business here in our community that about 2/3 of that dollar stays here? Did you know that when you spend one dollar at a nationally owned business in our community about 1/3 of that dollars stays in our community? And when you spend that dollar online, none of it stays in our community. So, the easiest way to make sure we are all leaving our community better than we found it is by shopping local and spending money as close to home as possible.
their buying decisions based on community. Our parents chose to buy tires from the local tire shop because the owner’s daughter used to babysit us or they would buy books from the local bookstore because the owners son used to mow their lawn. There was a personal touch that made our community strong. Over the past couple of decades that has changed. Now speed and convenience is what people look for. When you can buy something quick online with free shipping from your arm chair the ease of purchase becomes the draw. However, that has left our local communities out of the loop and out of the equation. In October I challenge each of you to buck this trend and shop locally. Not only that, but tell your friends about it online. Take a picture of you shopping at a local store and share it online. Tell your friends about it and ask them to support local small business too. This small change can have a huge impact on our community and on our world. Every small business owner knows the imporance of shopping small and shopping local. Let’s all go out and thank them for supporting our community by supporting them. Have a great October and remember to Keep It Local!
Many years ago this was a forgone conclusion. People made

PAMPER YOUR POOCH AT K9 SALON
OCTOBER 2016
Trips to the salon shouldn’t just be for the two legged members of the family. K9 Salon, located in the King Soopers Shopping Center at the corner of Parker Road and Stroh Road, has been providing high quality pet care to furry friends in Parker, Castle Rock and Franktown since 2004. They proudly offer cage-free dog grooming salon services, paying extra attention to each and every one of their tail wagging clients. K9 uses only premium quality grooming products and aromatherapy products to keep pets waiting calmly after they have been hand dried. If you have multiple pets getting services, they will be kept together throughout their appointment. After your pup’s spa day is done, they can relax in comfortable dog beds until they are picked up. K9’s policy is to take care of your pet in the most relaxing, hassle-free way possible. For all pets’ safety, proof of current vaccinations must be provided for each pet at the time of their first visit. Records can be emailed (k9salonandmarket@ comcast.net) or faxed (303.805.3845) to the shop prior to your appointment. If your puppy is looking a little “ruff” around the edges, call K9 Grooming and schedule their appointment – you’ll both be glad you did! SEARCHPARKERhistory GHOST STORIES AT THE RHODE ISLAND HOTEL
Parker is a town rich in history, with a story around each and every corner. One you may not have heard is a perfect yarn to spin this time of year, a story more appropriately told around a campfire late at night. The well known building that stands at the corner of Mainstreet and Victorian Drive, which currently is home to local haunts like Fika Coffee House and Mainstreet Flowers, has volumes of stories to tell – if those walls could only talk. Once known as the Rhode Island House Hotel, this building served as both a hotel and dining establishment for ranchers, railroaders, miners and others seeking their fortune. Some wonder if not all these guests from the early 1900’s ever really left the old hotel. Those who have worked in the building tell stories of seeing shadows in the doorways and glances of silhouettes that were there one moment and gone the next. Others claim that lights would mysteriously flicker on and off and doors would open and close, seemingly on their own. Most curiously, a former store owner swears that one evening, as she worked at her computer, she saw a pair of brown corduroy pants and saddle shoes out of the corner of her eye, but when she turned to see who it was, they were gone. Perhaps not all of the guests of the Rhode Island Hotel have settled their bill? www.hauntedcolorado.net

H ealthy Living
by Paige Fox, CHom, CHC
with Homeopathy
Our well-being is directly connected with our emotions, traumas, day to day life itself and how we handle stresses. In order to take care of ourselves it’s important to consume healthy foods, live a harmonious life and find a way of balancing all the components that make up our everyday life. Homeopathy, the practice of medicine that embraces a holistic, natural approach to treatment, addresses all symptoms you are experiencing; it does not separate the body functions from the mind or consciousness. Homeopathy looks into predispositions, mineral deficiencies and toxins in the body, as well as emotional stresses from childhood or traumas that can lead to a very unbalanced, malfunctioning body. Suppressing the symptoms with Western medicines can be a quick fix or even life saving at times, but in the end it’s important to look at the body as a whole to discover the underlying causes for diseases.
OCTOBER 2016
How does holistic medicine do that exactly? By listening to patients about how they experience their pains, anxieties, fears or depressions. How was life before they got sick, what happened at the onset of a disease? What traumas have they experienced, what are their bodies trying to express with the symptoms that are felt, perceived or visible? Time spent with patients is far longer than what you may be accustomed to. Your first appointment can range anywhere from 1-3 hours in order to gain an understanding of each patient, what their imbalances are and how they can be addressed. In each case-taking, we collect an intensive health history and discuss current and past concerns. Physical, psychological and emotional characteristics and complaints of the individual are addressed. The practice of homeopathic medicine is a process of trying to remind the body to heal itself; all of us have the innate ability to heal and improve our own health and well being. Weight gain, depression, anxiety and fatigue are some of the most prevalent symptoms in today’s society and they can all be addressed with these natural, holistic, and safe forms of medicine. Homeopathic Medicines are produced according to the U.S. FDA-recognized Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia of the United States; they are derived from minerals, plants or animals. These medications are gentle, subtle but powerful remedies, working mainly on an energetic level; improving our lives by increasing our energy, improving our quality of sleep and helping us feel more balanced, connected and happy. Chronic, unresolved issues as well as acute conditions can all be addressed by homeopathic treatment. If you value your individuality and believe in your own capability of getting better, there is always a place in your life for homeopathy. Secrets of Hallstead House By Amy Reade
Macy is desperately trying to heal after unexpectedly losing her parents in a car accident. As a nurse, she accepts a temporary job to care for a wealthy widow that is healing from hip surgery. She’s moves to an estate that resides on an island outside of New York State. Macy is not receiving a warm welcome as she tries to call this island her temporary home and refuge. Strange things are happening and she desperately wants to protect herself and her client that she has come to adore.
BECKY I picked this book because we wanted a spooky mystery
for our October issue. The descriptions are beautiful and the author painted a very good picture of the home, the island and the characters. The story however is somewhat simplistic and I couldn’t sink my teeth into this mystery. The reviews are very good so it must have something to do with me. Did you connect to this story?
PAM I was eager to read this book after reviewing the summary. However, I agree that it felt quite one-dimensional and had much more potential than was realized. I did love reading the descriptions of the area and felt that the author did an amazing job of transporting the reader to the location. The beauty and isolation of the island adds to the suspense of the story, as Macy is stuck with a handful of strangers. She is serving as a nurse to an elderly woman recovering from a recent hip surgery. Did you enjoy this character? BECKY Alexandria was my favorite character. I enjoyed her
balance of strength and loving attitude. However, I found it unlikely that a wealthy, mature businesswoman would be so laid back about odd happenings around her home. She had enough fear that she locked her bedroom door but not enough to increase security around the house or island. Did you find this situation to be believable?
OCTOBER 2016
PAM I completely agree with your take on this character. Alex was a strong woman that had persevered through very difficult events in her life. It was not believable to me that she would accept her fear and sit back and wait for something to happen. Although Alex was a loving character, everyone else on the island clearly resented Macy and didn’t bother to hide their feelings. Vali and Leland are an elderly couple that help take care of Alex and the house. They are especially nasty to Macy, but are very devoted to Alex. What were your thoughts about these characters? BECKY They were creepy characters that had great potential.
I enjoyed their dedication to Alex and understood why they were protective of her and the island. However, I expected a deeper development of their storyline that just didn’t happen as the story

progressed. If a Stephen King story is too scary for you then this might be the right book for you. What you get is a suspenseful mystery with a little romance thrown in too. Did you enjoy the addition of a love interest for Macy?
PAM This aspect of the story provided a character that Macy was able to find a connection with and count on. Initially, he is unfriendly and suspicious of Macy, as are Vali and Leland. However, with time he and Macy become close and she finds a friend in him. Did this change seem abrupt to you or did you feel that the author developed this story line? BECKY Like the mystery in this book, the romantic relationship
had a light feel to it. There were no hot and graphic love scenes. As I was reading I didn’t expect this development so it did feel a bit abrupt. I didn’t feel like it was necessary for the story but it did give her an ally that knew the island and it’s inhabitants well. Which was needed as she was captive on this small island and she had zero nautical skills, including the ability to swim. I was much more fascinated by the area that is described in this story. Google Thousand Islands before reading this book and it will give you a wonderful foundation for the story. I never knew that this area existed and the pictures that I found made it very intriguing. If you were Macy, would you have accepted this job and would you have stayed as weird things started to happen?
PAM If I were Macy, I would have accepted the job to get away and try something new. However, with the lack of welcome from the inhabitants on the island, I would have certainly struggled to stay and finish the job. But then, I would have missed some action! Next month we are going to travel to another country, as well as another time. We will read about two sisters that are separated by the ugliness of war in Secrets of a Charmed Life, by Susan Meissner.

LOCALAUTHORSPOTLIGHT WASHINGTON’S PROVIDENCE: By Chris LaFata
Former history professor John Curry has been recruited by a time-travel company to scout the best vantage point for clients to witness the inauguration of the first President of the United States. There’s just one problem: When he arrives in 1789, there is no inauguration—and no United States. Until this point, the time-travel job has had its perks. Getting relationship advice from the legendary lover, Casanova, was valuable. Accompanying Casanova to the opening night of Mozart’s opera, Don Giovanni, was even better. But being stranded in the British Colony of New York isn’t what he signed up for. Few people have even heard of George Washington, and the short-lived American Revolution failed—presumably because Washington wasn’t alive to lead it. John always knew history could change on a dime, but not after it already happened. Right? After learning Washington was killed thirty years earlier during the French and Indian War, John realizes the only way he can return home is to ensure there’s a United States to return to. Everything hinges on keeping Washington alive— not the easiest task protecting someone famous for leading battles on the front lines while perched on a horse. While traveling further back through time to protect Washington, he uncovers a secret the Freemasons have kept for more than two and a half centuries and learns that the history he thought he knew was completely wrong. STRENGTH FROM TRAGEDY:
ANNE FRANK’S FATHER SHARES HIS WISDOM WITH AN AMERICAN TEEN By Cara Wilson-Granat
The Diary of Anne Frank, one of our enduring inspirational books, written by the only family survivor, motivated people all over the world to carry on Anne’s message of love and hope in their own lives. Otto Frank never wanted Anne remembered as a victim but as a living spirit through her words. A generation later, a young American girl began conversations with Otto through letters reflecting her own chaotic teenage years and the violence in America in the 1960s and `70s. His responses helped her as she matured into a loving, trusting woman.
OCTOBER 2016
Cara Wilson-Granat (Weiss-Wilson at the time of their correspondence) wrote this book from her extraordinary friendship with Otto and the inspiration she drew from it. He validated her need to be heard and respected; he became her mentor, her wise “grandfather” as he was for many, many others worldwide. He taught the importance of tolerance and true spirituality, focusing on the power of love, not revenge. He said “If the end of the world would be imminent, I still would plant a tree today.” He truly lived his message. Cara’s nearly twenty-year correspondence with Otto culminated in a memorable meeting shortly before his death, the impact of which continues to influence her life even today. Her remarkable book helps others lead fulfilling lives and renews our faith in the possibility of hope, peace, and making positive choices every moment. Available at Amazon 39 SEARCH PARKER MAGAZINE
