The Greek tragedian Euripides once remarked, “Where there is no wine, there is no love.” There will be plenty to love at the 15th Annual Castle Rock WineFest, presented by the Castle Rock Chamber of Commerce. This amazing outdoor wine tasting event offers more than two dozen wineries and over 180 varietals of the finest Colorado wines. Wine aficionados are drawn to this event to be sure, but not just for the vino. Castle Rock WineFest also offers live music, distinctive artisan vendors, Food Trucks, a Bier Garten where patrons can purchase cold, draft beer local to Castle Rock and unique events like the Grape Stomp! In addition to the incredible food and wine, the line up for Main stage entertainment at the WineFest begins with Flat Out Jazz (TBC) from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m., followed by Heart & Soul playing from 6:00pm – 8:00 p.m. The third weekend of the month, Butterfield Crossing Park in the Meadows will host this not-to-be-missed extravaganza. Get your tickets early and plan to stay all day, rain or shine. Castle Rock WineFest and the Castle Rock Chamber do not offer refunds or rain checks. Be sure to dress for the unpredictable Colorado weather, and wearing comfortable shoes is highly recommended. Please be sure to note that the Castle Rock WineFest is an event intended for ADULTS ONLY. No children or pets are allowed. There are also no strollers, glass, or outside coolers permitted.

To get your tickets to the Castle Rock WineFest, go to www.castlerock.org/ castle-rock-winefest; be sure to purchase tickets early, as they will increase from $35 to $45 on July 18th. Designated Driver tickets can be purchased for $17. Get there early, not only to get a jump on the fun, but to claim your free wine bottle tote – the first 2000 attendees will be able to snag this free WineFest swag. There is no self parking at Butterfield Park, however there is valet parking available at the festival site for just $10 on the west side of the park near the basketball courts. Space is limited in this lot but there is also a free shuttle service provided from the Outlets at Castle Rock. Drive to the Northwest section of the Outlets, near the Nike Outlet. The Shuttle will travel from the Outlets and will make one stop at Butterfield Park and then continuously run from Butterfield Park back to the Outlets Parking lot. ** BE SURE TO BRING A PHOTO ID** This free shuttle service will run from 1:30pm -8:30pm. The Chamber’s Annual WineFest is a festival where wine lovers will have an opportunity to participate in a Grand Tasting of Colorado wines at one convenient location. Dust off your boots, shine your spurs, grab your hat and get ready for one of the most exciting weekends of the year. It’s time for the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo, which is celebrating their 100th anniversary and 100 years of fun this year. Go for the Carnival, stay for the Rodeo and don’t miss anything in between. Paradise Amusements is offering up another weekend full of the classic fair carnival experience. You can purchase tickets for the Carnival through August 1st; after August 1st, tickets will be available at the Ticket Office during Carnival hours. The Carnival will be open Thursday, August, 2nd from 2pm-10pm, Friday, August 3rd from 2pm-1130pm, Saturday, August 4th from 10am-11:30pm, and Sunday, August 5th, from 10am-4:30pm. In addition to the fun and games at the Carnival, there are tons of things for the whole family to enjoy that weekend. Check out Discovery Ranch and see what it’s like to be a farmer for the day! Visit the “Feed a Pig” Learning Station, see farm animals up close and personal and more in this interactive, hands-on agricultural area. All these hands-on activities highlight the importance of agriculture. Want to see what gives the Rodeo it’s get-up-andgo? Check out Beyond the Dirt. This family friendly event gives you a glimpse behind the scenes at the Fair and Rodeo. Meet the animals and rodeo clowns, learn to rope, check out the bucking shoot gate and find out more about the youth organizations that play such an integral role in the Fair and Rodeo. Take part in Beyond the Dirt on Saturday, August 4th, from 12:30-2pm at the Outdoor Arena Warm Up Area. Feeling a little competitive? Check out the Cricket Races on Friday! crickets, they will be provided for you. This event is for kids ages 4-14. Kids of ALL ages can take part in the Pie Eating Contests on Saturday at noon and Sunday at 10am. Entry fees are just $2/person, and the whole family can get in on the fun (and the pie) as there are three ages groups, 12 and under, 13-17 and 18 and up. Another hilarious event both to watch and compete in is the Blindman Tractor Drive. On Satruday, August 4th, watch (or sign up to be a team) where blindfolded drivers have partners to help them navigate the course; husband wife teams are divided into two categories, those that have been married less than 10 years and those who have been married more than 10 years! Miscellaneous categories are made for Mother/Son, Father/ Daughter or Friend teams. If that’s not enough, there’s still the Goat Costume Contest, Quickdraw Milkout Contest, Vintage Marketplace at the Events Center, Creative arts and open classes, Stick Horse Rodeo, 4-H and FFA Exhibits of livestock, general projects and the Jr. Livestock Sale, Sunday’s Church Service and free Pancake Breakfast and much, much more! Of course, the weekend isn’t complete until you see the big show, the Rodeo! There’s three 3 PRCA (Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association) Rodeos throughout the weekend. Friday at 7pm is the Patriot Rodeo, honoring veterans and the men and women currently serving in the military. Active and retired military (with ID) will receive 1 free rodeo admission. Wear your red, white and blue to show your support! Saturday at 7pm will be a special performance celebrating the ProRodeo Hall of Fame class of 2018. Several of the inductees will be there to be a part of the evening. Sunday at 1pm is Cowboys for Cops; supporting local law enforcement from the Colorado State Patrol, Douglas County Sheriffs Department, Castle Rock and Parker Police Departments and contributing to their funds for fallen officers. Wear your blue and show your support for these officers and everything they do every day for our communities. Rodeos events include bareback riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, tie down roping, women’s barrel racing, team roping and bull riding.
There’s also the Xtreme Bulls event Thursday, August 2nd at 7pm. Xtreme Bulls is often considered the rodeo’s most dangerous event, showcasing the PRCA’s top bull riders and some of the “rankest” bulls on tour. It’s real down and dirty, in-your-face competition. Definitely not for the faint of heart! Little cowboys and cowgirls can try their hand at riding in the Mutton Bustin’ event. Riders must be ages 5-7 and weigh 55 pounds or less. It’s just $10 per rider, and entries register 1 hour before each scheduled ride. The first 60 kids to register are allowed to ride and the top 10 scores of each Mutton Bustin’ event will have the opportunity to ride in the ticketed performance later the same day. Long sleeved shirts and pants and boots or tennis shoes (no sandals) are required. Safety vests and helmets are provided and must be worn. With all there is to see and do, it’s impossible not to lasso some fun at the 100th Anniversary of the Douglas County Fair & Rodeo! years researching his symptoms and went to countless doctor visits, which finally led to a terrifying discovery. After almost a decade of symptoms, doctors at the University of Pennsylvania finally diagnosed Caleb with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva (FOP).
Caleb’s story could be any child’s story. As a toddler, Caleb had countless ear infections and appeared to have very stiff muscles. As he grew, his limited neck mobility became more noticeable and he didn’t have full range of motion. He had trouble hearing at school and complained of random pains which his parents attributed to growing pains. Full body x-rays showed fusion of multiple vertebrae and extra bones throughout his body. As the pain and bones increased, so did his parents’ concern. They spent

FOP causes soft tissues, ligaments, and muscles to turn into bone, eventually stealing mobility from the patient as their body is imprisoned in bone. FOP is an ultra-rare disease affecting 1 in 2 million people. There are only about 800 people living with it in the world today and currently, there is no treatment or cure for FOP. In an effort to fund continuing and much needed research, the entire community is invited to the 2nd Annual Bombers for Bones Home Run Derby and Skills Competition event on Saturday, July 21st, at Metzler’s Ranch Park. (4175 Trail Boss Drive in Castle Rock) Teams and individuals of all ages are welcome to join in on the fun and help raise funds for a cure! Participants will attempt to hit home runs off a live pitcher to compete for trophies and titles within their age groups. In addition, participants are invited to test their baseball skills - pitch speed and accuracy, and time around the bases. For a $20 donation, you will be entered into the Home Run Derby and Skills Challenge, for a $30 donation, you’ll be entered into both events and receive a commemorative t-shirt! Funds raised at the Bombers for Bones event will go directly to the International Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva Association - IFOPA. These funds will go towards research grants working on treatment of FOP and support of IFOPA patients and their families. A clinical trial currently underway and in phase 2 is showing promising results in possibly reducing new bone growth when a flare up occurs while patients are on the trial medication!
Fundraising efforts are focused on moving the research along so maybe, someday, those with FOP will not experience continued progression of this terrible disease. The IFOPA is a nonprofit organization that supports research for FOP treatments and a cure, provides support to patients and families living with FOP, and hope to Caleb and his family. Today, Caleb is an energetic, caring 12-year-old boy, and although he does have many extra bones throughout his body, he still has his mobility. He does experience frequent flare-ups, causing him pain and stiffness in multiple parts of his body most days. His family is hopeful that the limitations caused by this disease will remain mild for Caleb until a cure or treatment can be found. For now, he is able to continue to play the sports he loves, with some limitations, with his whole heart and for that his family is truly thankful. “As with everything, he has faced this challenge tough as nails, with a unique outlook, no fear and a happy heart. He is truly a special soul and we feel blessed to have been chosen to raise him.” Come out and spend some time at the ballpark, taking part in one of Caleb’s favorite pastimes, for an incredibly meaningful purpose. Beautiful, starry summer nights, fantastic live concerts – what could be better than an amazing show at an equally amazing venue? Not much! This summer’s Summer Concert Series at the Amphitheater at Philip S. Miller Park is one outstanding night out after another each week. Bring out a blanket or a lawn chair, or get your tickets for box seating which includes tables, chairs and beverage service (beverage service does cost extra.) Soft sided coolers and food are permitted, however outside alcoholic beverages are not. Beer and cocktails as well as non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the concert. Saturday, July 14th, it’s Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, who are celebrating their 25th anniversary of hitting the music scene (if you can believe that!) Dixieland combined with their boundless energy and enthusiastic performances makes for a swingin’ good time! Friday, July 20th, Grammy-winning singer/ songwriter Michael McDonald takes the stage. One of music’s most distinctive voices, Michael McDonald has graced the music charts time and time again as a solo artist as well as a part of Steely Dan, the Doobie Brothers and the Dukes of September. With classic hits like “Sweet Freedom” and “What a Fool Believes” from his earlier successes, great covers from his Grammy nominated “Motown” and its follow up “Motown Two,” to his more recently released, “Wide Open,” his music stands the test of time and the standards of excellence. Headliners for this performance are Gary Wright, John Elfante (Former lead singer of KANSAS), Jim Peterik (Founder/singer IDES OF MARCH and formerly with Survivor) and David Pack (former lead singer of AMBROSIA.) MASTER
Chimney Starter
Skip the toxic charcoal lighter fluid and go with a chimney starter. They are super easy to use and won’t have any of that offensive odor. Simply crumple up some old paper, stuff it in the bottom of the chimney, fill it with charcoal and light the paper. That’s it. After about 15 minutes or so the coals will be ready to rock. Spread them in an even layer in the bottom of your grill.
Get Handsy
Not sure if your grill is hot enough? No worries, that’s why you have a hand. Carefully hold your open palm about 5-6 inches above the grill rack. If you can’t stand the heat for more than 2 seconds then your temp is considered high. 5 seconds of heat and you are in the medium range. If you can keep your hand over for 10 seconds then you are experiencing low heat. Most of all be smart, don’t burn yourself because you can’t cook if you can’t use your hand.

Embrace the Basket
Vegetables and small food can be a real bummer. Don’t get frustrated with them… instead use a grill basket. These miracle workers will save you lots of time and frustration. Just give them a once over with vegetable oil or non-stick spray before each use to keep the sticking to a minimum.
Take It Easy and Give It a Rest Once your meat is done, give it some time to rest. Place your culinary creation on a platter and tent it with foil for 5 to 10 minutes. This will allow the meat time to distribute all those yummy juices evenly. 11

Growing up, Sachiko Reece was always interested in doing hair, make-up and nails; she started cutting and styling her Barbie’s hair and the passion continued to blossom.
