Honoring Our Veterans One hundred years ago, at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the armistice that ended the fighting on land, sea and air between the Allies and Germany during WWI went into effect. In the century since that day, November 11th remains a day to pay tribute to our country’s heroes and honor the sacrifice millions of veterans and their families have made for our county. President Woodrow Wilson, in his address to the nation on the first Armistice Day in 1919 said, “To us in America the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service, and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of nations. “ Armistice Day was observed in the United States until it was renamed as Veterans Day in 1954. While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran’s Day or Veterans’ Day (and those spellings are grammatically correct), the United States Department of Veterans Affairs website officially states that Veterans Day is the official spelling; as it is not a day that belongs to veterans rather a day honoring all veterans. There is no shortage of ways to pay tribute to those who have served and are serving in our armed forces in and around our Denver-Metro communities. The Aurora Veterans Salute honors and remembers the 100 years since the end of World War I at Wings Over the Rockies on Wednesday, November 7th from 9:30am-1:30pm. To register for the event, call 303.326.8650. On November 10th, the Wings over the Rockies will host the WWI Centennial Anniversary from 10:00am-5:00pm at the Boeing Blue Sky Aviation Gallery, where the Honor Bell will be on display. The purpose of the Honor Bell Foundation is to create a community of veterans to foster public appreciation of military service and honor their fellow veterans with a proper, final tribute. www.wingsmuseum.org Through November 11th, glass poppies, created by soldiers and veterans, will be on display at the Denver Botanic Gardens in partnership with Denver’s Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 1. This exhibit was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War I armistice and to honor the 1,290 Colorado military members who died during the war. Boettcher Memorial Center at the Gardens’ York Street location. www. botanicgardens.org
In an effort to better honor our fallen Colorado heroes, join TEDxMileHigh and Denver University graduate students as they guide you through the Fort Logan Cemetery, telling the stories of forgotten soldiers who fought and died serving their country and their home state of Colorado. This event will be held Saturday, November 10th, from 9:30am–11:00am at Fort Logan National Cemetery, 4400 W Kenyon Ave, Denver. www. cem.va.gov On November 10th, from 10:00am-2:00pm, Mile High Harley-Davidson of Parker invites the public to come out to and say a special thank you to our men and women in uniform at their Veterans Appreciation event. A complimentary brunch will be served and there will be special in-store discounts for veterans and active duty military and their families. Mile High Harley-Davidson of Parker, 6280 East Pine Lane, Parker One of the biggest events in the area is the Denver Veterans Day Parade. Thousands of spectators will line Civic Center Park and the nearby streets to honor our local veterans as they enjoy floats, car clubs, marching units, bands and much more! Come out and enjoy the festivities on Saturday, November 10th at 10 AM. The parade starts at 14th St and W Colfax Avenue. Immediately following the parade, the Denver Veterans Day Festival will begin and continue through 3:00pm at City Park. This free, family friendly event includes a music stage, tons of vendors, a wide variety of food and activities and displays of both vintage and modern military vehicles. The festival serves as a big, community “thank you” to our veterans. www. denverveteransday.com The Colorado Veterans Project will be hosting the Denver Veterans Day Run 5K/10K on Sunday, November 11th at 8:00am at City Park. This memorial run is Denver’s official run for Veterans and is open to runners, joggers, walkers, kids and dogs. To register, go to www.denverveteransday.com/run Whether you’re able to be a part of one of the larger events in the Denver area, a smaller event in your town or simply take the time to stop and thank a veteran for their service, be sure to stop and make an effort to show your appreciation for the heroic efforts and selfless sacrifice our veterans make for us every day. “True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve all others at whatever cost.” Arthur Ashe

Family traditions are a big part of what makes the holidays such a special time of year. Sometimes it’s pulling out a recipe handed down from grandma or getting everyone some wonderfully awful matching pajamas; but before you put on those jammies after Thanksgiving dinner so you can enjoy grandma’s famous pumpkin pie in comfort, why not get out and get moving with the whole family at Castle Rock’s Turkey ROCK Trot? Thanksgiving morning, Douglas County Event Center becomes home base for Castle Rock’s largest attended race and beloved holiday tradition. The 14th Annual Turkey ROCK Trot 5K Family Fun Run/Walk/Stroll is more than just a walk (or run) in the park! The race begins with live music from DJ Mike Handby at the start and throughout the course that weaves its way through the streets of Castle Rock. New this year, there will be a Kid’s Dash for those little turkeys that want to get in on the fun. Runners 12 years old and younger can compete in the Kid’s Dash, which will commence at 8:30am, thirty minutes before the ROCK Trot start. To help ensure a safe event, the ROCK Trot will be using Wave Corrals. If you wish to run or walk with others, be sure to select the wave of the slowest person for all registrants. You may move to a slower wave than assigned, but you cannot move to a faster wave than assigned. Your time does not start until you cross timing mats.

The top Female and Male in 8 different age groups as well as the fastest team of 4 (must be registered as a team) will also be awarded after the race. If you’re entering as a team, you can vie for the title of “Fittest Flock.” The largest team of co-workers, friends, family and money raised wins free sponsorship. Whether you’re looking for your best time, or just to cross that finish line, free professional photos will be taken of all participants on the course to commemorate the day. After you cross the finish line, enjoy free coffee and breakfast for all participants from Flippin’ Flapjacks with mimosas and bloody marys available for purchase (be sure to bring a credit card and valid id.) There will also be free beer (1 free beer for every participant 21 and up.) Once again this year, 105 West and Rockyard Breweries will be teaming up to create a special brew just for the ROCK Trot.
Immediately following the Turkey ROCK Trot, check out all there is to see at the Health Expo, featuring over 30 health and wellness vendors and giveaways. This family friendly event includes face painting, bounce house, balloon twisting and more, all MC’d by Bo Jaxon from 92.5 The Wolf. The best part of this event isn’t the race or the fun to be had at the expo, but the fact that all of this is done to help out those in need in our community. Proceeds from registrations and sponsorships are given to the Help & Hope Center to meet the immediate needs of Douglas and Elbert County Residents who find themselves in financial distress and/or at the risk of becoming homeless. This year, event organizers are also asking participants to bring a bag of much needed toiletry items (toothpaste, soap, deodorant, toilet paper etc.) to stock Elbert County Task Force. Starlighting
It’s nearly that time on the calendar again; time for one of the most beloved events of the year. The Castle Rock Starlighting Celebration, a tradition that gets everyone in the spirit of the season, will take place from 2:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, November 17th, in the heart of Downtown Castle Rock at Wilcox Square. For over 80 years, the Star has been lit nearly every year to celebrate the holiday season, serving as a symbol of hope and peace for the community. The Star’s humble beginnings involved poles donated by a local electric company to build the 40 foot structure. It was lit with nearly 100 bulbs with wire donated by the Mountain States Telephone Company. The Star shone brightly over the town of Castle Rock each night from 5pm to midnight until 1941. During WWII, lighting the Star was a luxury Castle Rock could no longer afford due to wartime electricity rationing. Even unlit, the structure remained a steady symbol of hope on the Rock. On August 14th, 1945, the Star was lit as a “V” for victory, marking the end of the war. December 7th of that year, the Star was once again lit for the holiday season and has continued to shine brightly every year since. The Star’s celebratory beacon isn’t just for the holidays. In 1998 and 1999 it was illuminated in Broncos’ orange and blue in honor of Denver’s back to back Super Bowl wins and again in 2015 after the Broncos’ win over the Panthers. The Star has also been used to bring us together in difficult times. In 2001, after the horrific attacks on September 11th, the star was lit for several weeks as a symbol of remembrance and unity. That year, the Starlighting Ceremony theme was one of patriotism. This season’s celebration will once again include strolling entertainers, live entertainment, lots of hot chocolate and, of course, Santa will be there for visits and photos. Visit him at the PS Miller Library from 2-4pm and then the Fire Station from 4-6pm. While you’re downtown for celebration, lace up those skates and hit the Rink at the Rock, Castle Rock’s outdoor rink! The Star Lighting Celebration is scheduled from 2pm-7pm, with Starlighting Ceremony beginning at 5pm. The Star will be illuminated at approximately 5:30pm, but those attending the event please note that it may be earlier. Free Shuttle Rides for the event will run from 1:30pm to 8:30pm. Shuttles are location specific, so please make sure you leave on the same shuttle you arrived on in order to get back to your vehicle. Shuttles will run from Douglas County High School – South Bldg. (2842 Front Street), Douglas County Fairgrounds – Lot 5 (500 Fairgrounds Drive), and Castle View High School– Back North Lot (5254 N Meadows Drive.) Open parking will be available in Parker Garage levels 1, 2 and 3 during the event. For those choosing to drive, please be aware that several roads in and around Downtown will be closed between 1-6pm including Wilcox Street from 5th to 3rd, 4th Street from Jerry to Perry, Perry Street from 5th to 2nd and 3rd Street from Wilcox to Front Street. This year cars will be towed and impounded at the owner’s expense. The same spirit of volunteerism, generosity and love of tradition exists as much today as it did over 80 years ago, when the Star was first illuminated over Castle Rock. Come out and be a part of Castle Rock’s time honored tradition at the Starlighting Celebration and start the holiday season in the most magical way possible.

Are you feeling hungry and want a healthy option? Come to Vitality Bowls conveniently located by the Outlets at Castle Rock. There are many options in this area but Vitality Bowls specializes in making delicious açaí bowls, which are a thick blend of the açaí berry topped with organic granola and a selection of superfood ingredients. Additional antioxidant-rich menu items include smoothies, fresh juices, soups, salads and panini. All items on the menu are made fresh to order and in a kitchen designed to avoid cross contamination of common food allergens. It is my favorite place to go when I’m in this area. I like the natural ingredients, variety of options and I don’t feel like I just had a heavy meal that I feel guilty about. No ingredient fillers such as ice, frozen yogurt, added sugar or artificial preservatives are used, giving the purest taste possible to each item. They are dairy free and all natural. You will be surprised by the superfoods that are available. Many I would normally never buy or in my case have ever heard of before. What exactly is a camu camu? Here I can try it in a bowl to see if I like it. They even incorporate the superfoods in waffles and coffee too! They want people to be healthy. If you just finished working out, try the Pitaya, either the bowl or smoothie. If you feel dehydrated, the Rehydrater with Chia seeds is highly recommended. If you are stuffy and need to clear your your nose, a lemon ginger shot. If you want a dessert but want it to be healthy, a dessert bowl. They even have a menu for children. There are so many options! Vitality Bowls is owned by a local couple and opened on November 17, 2016. Their son wanted to open up a business and they helped him start Vitality Bowls. After a year and a half, he wanted to go back to school to be a full blown chef so they took it over from him. Stop by and let them know that you heard about their delicious bowls. The staff will help you pick something perfect for your meal.

THEBOOKENDS
with Pam & Becky
Next Year in Havana By: Chanel Cleeton
After the death of her grandmother, Marisol Ferrera travels to Cuba to complete a request from the woman who was like a mother to her. She hopes to experience the Cuba that she learned about through stories from her exiled family. When she arrives and meets an old family friend, she learns secrets about her grandmother that will make her question all she knows about her family. Marisol also learns about the challenges facing Cuba and the people of her family’s home. Pam: When I read the summary for this book, I was very intrigued. I realized that I had never read a book about Cuba and I did not have much background knowledge about the history. I was also drawn to the story of a very strong woman and her family. We begin with Elisa’s story in Havana in 1959, as her family is escaping Cuba after the fall of Batista. From this point, we learn about Elisa, her family, and what led to their exile from their home. Elisa and her three sisters are part of high society, as the daughters of a sugar baron. Did you enjoy reading about the sisters and their relationships with each other?
grandmother’s ashes to her home, however, she was officially there to write a travel article for a magazine. As she began to learn of Elisa’s secrets and the realities for the people of Cuba, her focus changed drastically. Marisol meets Luis, the son of Elisa’s best friend, when he picks her up from the airport and brings her to his family’s home. She feels a connection immediately and is surprised and unsettled by her feelings. This character has many different sides and will help Marisol discover the truth about her grandmother and Cuba. Did you enjoy this character and his part in the story?
Becky: This book was intriguing
introduced to the story it was obvious to me that he would become her love interest. I think that he added an interesting layer to this story and as her tour guide, his character provided a plethora of information. Later in the book, I was on the edge of my seat with his story. I was so worried for him that I literally think it increased my heart rate. This book isn’t overly descriptive but the writing in this book transported me to Cuba. Did you feel like you could hear the sea, imagine the beautiful dresses and visualize the many facets of Cuba?
from a few angles. The sisters were interesting and I enjoyed the family dynamics. What really hijacked my mind while reading this was learning more about Cuba. I had recently returned from a trip to Kenya and it was fresh in my mind the privilege it is to be born on American soil. A book club could have some interesting discussion with the topics brought to light in this book. The storyline from 1959 primarily tells us about Elisa’s journey. Before traveling to Cuba, Marisol thought that she knew her grandmother Elisa, but she soon discovers that there were some secrets to uncover. Did you enjoy the pace in which the story is revealed?
Pam: When we read stories that take us from one time to another, I am often eager to continue reading and discover how characters and events are connected. I felt that same anticipation with this book, but felt that the pace was appropriate for the story. Marisol traveled to Cuba in order to bring 13
Becky: When Luis is
Pam: I could definitely visualize Cuba and the Cuban people while reading this book. This picture in my head made me want to learn more about the history and culture of Cuba. Luis helps run a small restaurant out of his family’s home. This business allows the family to survive financially in challenging circumstances. Luis works with his grandmother, mother, and exwife in their restaurant. Although his grandmother is happy to host

Marisol, the other women in the home are not. Were you surprised by their hostility? Becky: I was not surprised at all that this group of women were wary of Marisol. I think they were cautious because she was an American but also protective because of their love for Luis. I too probably would have had a little attitude if I were in their position. Luis was already on a watch list and put himself in further danger by connecting himself to an American journalist. What I found more interesting is that he worked with his ex-wife. Financially she didn’t have other options so it was an intriguing layer to this story. In April of 2019 the author is releasing When We Left Cuba. We have the same family but the story is told in the 1960’s after they have settled in Florida. It will focus on Beatriz, the spicier sister. Would you be interested in revisiting this story from a different angle?
Pam: I would like to revisit this family, especially with the focus on Beatriz. She unapologetically went her own way in life and she would be fascinating to follow as the family had such a challenging change in lifestyle and culture. Although I have enjoyed following the family dynamics in the Ferrera family, it is time for us to get to know the Quinn family. Join us next month as we navigate the Christmas season with the Quinn family in Winter Street by Elin Hilderbrand. Check out some other books we recommend in, The Bookshelf: The Darkling Bride by Lauren Andersen. This Victorian mystery has it all! An old castle, a handsome Lord, family secrets and mysterious deaths.
