Hometown Heroes Chili Cook Off After Detective Dan Brite, of the Douglas County Sheriff ’s Department, was shot in the line of duty on September 2nd of 2016, the Douglas County Elks, Castle Rock Kiwanis and Castle Rock Knights of Columbus organized a pancake breakfast fundraiser to raise money for Detective Brite and the Fallen Officer Fund. This fundraiser was held in October 2016 at the Phillip S. Miller park in Castle Rock, and over $6,000.00 was raised at that event. With the success of that fundraiser, the three community groups decided to form an informal planning committee with members of each group, and continue to work together on future annual fundraising projects.

The following year, the committee met with Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock, who further detailed all the groups that benefit from the Douglas County Fallen Officer Fund. These funds provide support not only for the Sheriff ’s department personnel, but all of the law enforcement agencies in the county, as well as their families and administrative personnel. The committee recognized that this was a cause more than worthy of support and it was decided to pursue another event to continue to raise funds for the Fallen Officer Fund. With the participation of all of the police agencies in Douglas County as well as South Metro Fire, the community groups planned the First Annual Hometown Heroes Chili Cook Off that was held in October of last year at O’Brien Park in Parker, CO. All of the agencies and South Metro Fire competed for the best red or green chili and over $7,200.00 was raised for the Fallen Officers Fund. This fun, friendly competition and the financial success of the day, dictated that they

had found what would become an annual event. This year, the Castle Rock Eagles have joined the planning committee and they are adding more family oriented events and activities. In addition, there are sponsorship opportunities that will include chili entries by the sponsors. The Elks, Kiwanis, Knights and Eagles each do great things on their own in our communities. Working together has made it possible to pool service oriented ideas and experiences to help make this a great fundraising event for this very important cause. At the end of the day, all of this is about supporting our hometown heroes and their families and raising money to help take care of the wounded and fallen officers that protect our own families, neighbors and communities each day. Come out to Schweiger Ranch in Lone Tree, sample the offerings and vote for your favorite - and leave knowing all that fun you had is helping those that put their lives on the line everyday, without hesitation, to help us.

The 2018 MuckFest MS event series will take place in seven cities throughout the U.S. to help raise funds for those living with multiple sclerosis This year Parker joins Boston, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Detroit, Chicago and Dallas in the fight against MS. MuckFest MS is a 5K mud obstacle course that requires no training and is for any level -- from the beginner to the star athlete. In 2018, MuckFest MS anticipates more than 28,000 participants nationwide mucking it up to help get us to a world free of multiple sclerosis. Registration for the events is now open at www.MuckFestMS.com. Runners laugh their way through a 5K obstacle course as they slither through the Belly Crawl, jump into the Crash Landing stunt pad, and scale the mighty Mt. Muck-imanjaro. Other obstacles include Tunnel of Love, Spider Web, Shake & Quake, Swing Set, Spill Hill, Flying Muckers, Walk on Water, Skid Mark, Tight Rope, and more. After the event, participants gather in the MuckFestival area to celebrate their efforts out on the course with a free beer or soda. Over 90% of participants run on teams made up of friends, family, and coworkers. The event is free to spectators, and kids have their very own play area, called Lil’ Muckers, where they can splish and splash. Since MuckFest MS started, participants have raised $28 million for research. 100% of the funds raised goes to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s efforts to bring an end to MS and to help those currently living with it. In 2017, more than 32,000 participants raised more than $3 million. “We come together at MuckFest MS to lift up those who are affected by MS in an enjoyable and purposeful way,” said Liz Strawn, Senior Director of MuckFest MS & Special Events, National MS Society. “Every year we see teams made up of individuals who either have MS or support loved ones that do and can’t help but

feel inspired by their determination. This event gives participants the opportunity to have fun and directly impact the lives of those living with MS.” Multiple sclerosis is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Symptoms vary from person to person and range from numbness and tingling, to walking difficulties, fatigue, dizziness, pain, depression, blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are leading to better understanding and moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 2.3 million worldwide. The Society mobilizes people and resources so that everyone affected by MS can live their best lives. Last year, the Society invested $40 million in MS research with more than 360 active projects around the world. Through its comprehensive nationwide network of services, the Society devoted $100 million to help more than one million people affected by MS connect to the people, information and resources needed. They are united in their collective power to do something about MS now and end this disease forever. Learn more at nationalMSsociety.org. To join the fight, and get messy doing it, register for MuckFest today at MuckFestMS.com.

In May of 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours round and round a track at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, to help raise awareness and much needed funds in order to help save lives from cancer. Over thirty years later, Relay For Life events have become the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, with more than 5,200 volunteers coordinating events in 27 countries around the world. On Saturday, September 29th, from 2pm-8pm at O’Brien Park in Parker, you can be a part of Southeast Denver’s Relay for Life, and a part of something so much bigger than yourself. The Relay For Life is a team-fundraising event in which participants take turns walking a track or designated path, with a teammates collectively walking throughout the duration of the 6-24 hour event. The design of this event is significant, with one teammate constantly on the course, members of Relay for Life teams are a reminder that “cancer never sleeps” and those fighting this disease don’t stop because they are tired – and for one day &/or night, neither do those raising funds for a cure with Relay for Life. All money raised goes towards their overall team fundraising goal. This year’s event will kick off with the Opening Ceremony at 2:00pm, honoring all those affected by cancer and everyone who has contributed to the success of this year’s event. At 4:00pm, the Survivor/Caregiver walk will commence. These participants are the heart soul of the Relay For Life events. It doesn’t matter if survivors were diagnosed 10 days ago or 10 years ago, everyone in attendance will gather to cheer them on as they take to the course. At 7:00pm, the beautiful Luminaria Ceremony will begin. A luminara will be lit for every person touched by cancer, with each light representing a life. A life of a cancer survivor, a light to support those

fighting the battle and a light for those who have fought valiantly but, sadly, have lost that battle. Closing Ceremonies will commence at 8:00pm, celebrating what everyone involved in Relay for Life has accomplished together and committing to continue to take action in the fight to rid the world of cancer. Thirty years ago, the $27,000 Gordy Klatt raised and the more than 83 miles he covered paved the way for what has grown into the Relay for Life, which has continued, year after year, raising funds for cancer research. Sadly, Dr. Klatt passed away several years ago from heart failure after battling stomach cancer, but his idea has helped shaped a movement that has since become a global event, raising over $5 billion dollars and bringing survivors and supporters together to form a support network like no other. Cancer has tragically managed to get its grips on us all. Whether you’ve had a loved one battle this tenacious disease or you’ve faced it yourself, being a part of Relay For Life helps brings everyone together to fight the same fight. Join a team! Create a team! Volunteer! Donate! Cancer never sleeps, so neither can those fighting to find a cure - go to relay.acsevents.org and join the fight!

THEBOOKENDS

with Pam & Becky

The Hideaway By: Laura Denton

Sara Jenkins escaped Sweet Bay, Alabama and made a life for herself in New Orleans. She has a thriving antique shop that keeps her very busy. She loves her grandmother who raised her and talks on the phone with her every week at the same time. However, she is rarely able to find the time to go visit the bed and breakfast that her grandmother, Mags, owns. When Mags suddenly passes away, Sara learns that she has inherited The Hideaway (Mags’ B & B) and the responsibility for all of the old friends that live there. Mags directed Sara to fix up The Hideaway and then decide what she would like to do with the old bed and breakfast. She is forced to stay in Sweet Bay and begin the renovations, but begins to embrace the life she ran away from years before. She begins to unravel the secrets of her grandmother, which completely change her perspective on the eccentric woman. PAM: This book sounded like a great story and I couldn’t wait to read it! Sara was raised by her grandmother after her parents died in an accident. She was very embarrassed by her grandmother, Mags, while she was growing up. Mags was known for her unconventional outfits, as well as taking in any “guests” from The Hideaway as permanent residents. Sara is immersed in her own place of business and does not want to leave it when the attorney calls her to inform her of Mags’ passing. She makes the decision to go for a couple of days, but plans to return to her life quickly. How did you feel about Sara with this first introduction to her character? BECKY: I was quickly drawn to

Mags so my first impression of Sara was probably a bit tainted. I didn’t go into this story liking Sara who left her grandmother and the sleepy little town as quickly as she could. She made her obligatory phone calls but didn’t visit or really know her grandmother well. As the story progresses I changed my opinion of Sara but Mags was by far my favorite character. Speaking of characters, the people that live at The Hideaway are so entertaining. Did you enjoy this motley crew?

PAM: The residents of The Hideaway are a fun bunch that is just like family. This closeness allows them to just be themselves and speak their minds. Sara does not love this initially upon her return, but comes to bond with them. They clearly care for her and want what is best for her, while worrying about their own futures. I agree with you about Mags...she was

such a fun character. Sara did not appreciate Mags’ unique style and attitude when she was younger. While Sara is renovating The Hideaway, she discovers clues that begin to unravel secrets that will help explain Mags. Did you feel that these clues began to change Sara’s perspective and values?

BECKY: Sara was a busy business

life that had little unnecessary stress so she couldn’t help but put her guard down. As the renovation is in full swing a local real estate developer causes some stress to this couple and the residents of The Hideaway. Did this situation work out the way you anticipated or were you surprised by the ending?

woman that kept her relationships at a safe distance. She wanted to just swoop into town, renovate the old house and get back to her life in New Orleans. She settles into the project and it changes her. She learns more about Mags but also discovers herself in the process. I know it sounds cliche but it was done within a sweet Southern story. What did you think about the man that becomes her love interest and further ties her to this little town?

PAM: I felt that the ending had a little bit of both. The overall ending was what I was expecting, but the path to get there was not what I had anticipated. Sara admits to a tendency to shut down and shut others out of her life when things get hard. This contributed to her break in relationship with Mags and threatened to ruin her budding closeness to Crawford. Did you find this frustrating as you were following Sara’s story?

PAM: I loved this character and I loved that she found someone she could connect with in an unexpected place and time. The fact that they both loved old houses and were on the same page for renovating The Hideaway really tied these two together. After experiencing shallow relationships in the past, Sara felt drawn to Crawford the moment she met him while looking for a local contractor to help with the renovations. Did you feel that Crawford helped her slow down and rediscover herself and her family’s history?

BECKY: It was a little frustrating but

BECKY: Absolutely, he was a small
