GAININGMOMENTUM Last month Marlene and Kevin Warr finalized a long-term lease in the space formerly occupied by Treads at Parker Road and Mainstreet as part of a plan for an enormous expansion for Momentum Athletics Center. “Part of the excitement about expanding is that our new facility will offer more complete programs for Cheerleading, Tumbling, and Ninja within its own space. Right now, we offer these programs at our existing Progress Way location, however, these programs need to share space with our vast gymnastics programs. We want to make sure that these programs are given the same quality of care and attention that our gymnastics programs receive. We recognize the challenges that have come with the incredible growth we’ve experienced since taking full ownership a year ago, and along with a full-time program manager, we expect having their own designated space will help with this. We are excited to offer these newer programs because of the options they will bring to families in Parker and surrounding communities.”

Courtesy of Steve Lange

One of these programs is Momentum’s new preschool program which is offered in its own separate gym with toddler-size equipment. As a part of a healthy initiative to make gymnastics affordable for every family, Momentum has brought “Baby Mo” to Parker, a free Mommy/Daddy and me interactive program designed to give parents an opportunity to be active with their youngest children. But that’s not their only big announcement. Nastia Luskin, 2008 Olympic all-around Olympic gold medal winner is coming to Parker and you don’t have to be a Momentum gymnast to meet her! Nastia will visit Sunday, December 8 to help raise money for the COMAC Booster Club and Make-A-Wish Colorado in honor of Andrea, a 7 year old with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and to help fulfill her wish to have breakfast with Anna and Elsa at Disney. Nastia finished her competitive career with five Olympic medals and nine World medals, the second highest total of any U.S. gymnast. Nastia’s visit to Momentum has many young gymnasts in the community excited for the opportunity to have one-on-one time with her in special clinics and programs throughout the day. In addition to Make-A-Wish Colorado, the event benefits COMAC Booster Club in their efforts to offset the costs associated with competitive gymnastics. The more money each gymnast raises, the more prizes they’ll win; the more time they spend with Nastia, the more they’ll support two great causes. It’s a win-win! AROUNDTOWN THINGSTODO hot cocoa with mrs. claus Hilltop Schoolhouse, a historical landmark in Parker, is hosting an afternoon with Mrs. Claus from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, December 7th. Come visit the schoolhouse at the corner of Flintwood and Democrat Rd. One of the best things about Christmas is being able to give to someone else. Therefore, all donations received on Saturday, the 7th, will be used to purchase wish list gifts for local school families, just in time for Christmas. While at the schoolhouse, visitors may drink hot chocolate and have a cookie with Mrs. Claus. There are many holiday activities to enjoy, such as, ornament making, paper tree decorating with colorful candy "lights," and running a Colorado & Southern HO Railroad train in a village setting. The train is very similar to the train that stopped in Parker, Hilltop, and Elizabeth about 125 years ago! So to all who read this, come meet Mrs. Claus, while she makes her quick stop at the historic Hilltop Schoolhouse! Let's show the very merry Mrs. C. a warm welcome to our part of the world!

SUPPORTLOCAL holiday at home We live in a wonderful area with so much to offer. This December we send out a call to support our local community! This issue is filled with information about Parker’s holiday celebrations and offerings to inspire you to do just that. Help drum up some business for local artisans to kick off the season with adornments and trimmings. Start a new tradition with your family to attend an event, see a performance, or take a class right here in our own town. While eating out with family and visitors, appreciate some hometown cooking while supporting a neighborhood restaurant. When making your list and checking it twice, look to local shops and boutiques for gift giving options. Also be sure to look around and see how you can serve. There are so many worthy causes to be a part of at this time of year. It is an exciting season to be involved and appreciate how we come together as a community. This is a special time to feel the Christmas spirit. May the magic of this month fill your lives. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! "God bless us, every one!"

EDITORSTAKE A huge shout out to Chaparral Girls Volleyball! This year's State brackets were full of possibilities with the top eight teams all seeming to have a real chance. It was a tough battle at the Denver Coliseum for a three-day tournament. In the finals, for the second year in a row, Chaparral ladies faced off against Valor Christian for the 5A State Championship. The Eagles won the first game, 24-23. But the Wolverines fought back to beat the Eagles in the last three games 26-24, 25-11, and 25-23. The Lady Wolverines wanted redemption from last year's finals defeat and worked so hard to get it! It was a team effort to bring home the win. Congratulations, girls! “Sko, Chap – Defend the Den!” Congratulations to the 2019 5A Volleyball State Champion Chaparral Wolverines!!

PASSIONFORCOMPASSION In the 1990s, Parker’s Southeast Christian Church began collecting food and gifts for those in need. That group has now grown hugely and has become its own entity, SECORCares. SECORCares continues their Christmas Outreach Program, but they have changed some things. The original holiday program collected various donated items. The items were taken by volunteers to families around the community. The distribution process took many hours, and particularly fathers of families in need were not often involved in receiving the donations. Dennis Gorton, CEO/Executive Director, and Amy Pfister, Development Coordinator, emotionally describe the shift to a new way of running the program and the way it has affected families. SECORCares partners with churches and agencies to learn about the gift requests from families in need of help. After learning the specific requests of families, SECORCares creates a red gift tag for each child, describing their Christmas list for a $50 amount. This method ensures that each child’s individual needs are served. The tags are hung on Christmas trees in the lobby of the Solomon Centre and members of the community can come choose a child’s tag, for whom they will shop and donate items. The donated items are wrapped by volunteers and prepared for each child. The 2000 seats in the Solomon Centre’s auditorium are filled with prepared packages until the child’s family comes to pick up the items. This allows the parents to give the donated gifts to their child in any way they choose. Dennis shared how this way of giving has really empowered parents to feel more involved in the process. The Christmas Outreach Program is a sweet and rewarding program of which to be a part. Each year SECORCares and the community provide gifts to 1600 children. Come join this heartwarming cause by picking up a gift tag or volunteering! Learn more at secorcares.com.

ALASKA RV PARK TALES - BY KATHLEEN UTECHT Local author, Kathleen Utecht, tells us about her adventures owning an RV park in Alaska. There is a little history about Alaska, and then we move into chapters that share stories about the adventures during their ten years owning the Homestead RV Park in Palmer, Alaska BECKY Christmas is a busy time of year, so I chose a book that was entertaining and easy to read a chapter at a time. I have always had the desire to travel to Alaska, but it seems like such a harsh environment. Did this little book stoke or extinguish any desire you may have to travel to Alaska? PAM I have also wanted to travel to Alaska and enjoyed reading about the area! It definitely didn’t dampen my desire to visit, but I may not want to take an RV up there in early spring! One of my favorite things about traveling is enjoying the local wildlife, and there were many stories about the critters that were encountered on their journeys. Were you surprised by the variety of local wildlife? BECKY My favorite stories were about the animals they encountered. I recently moved to 35 acres, and I can relate to the interesting moments wildlife brings to a normal day. I can deal with those surprises, but I’m not sure I would have any interest in driving the Alcan highway. Those were some terrifying situations! Would you brave that highway?

PAM I would love the adventure of the Alcan highway, but definitely not with a fifth wheel! Our family has many stories of minor mishaps with our truck and camper growing up, but the challenges in the book were certainly more than minor mishaps. They met many different people due to the nature of owning an RV park. Between new employees and visitors to their park, many people came and went from their lives. I would struggle with the transient nature, which might make it hard to form strong relationships. Would this aspect be a positive or negative for you? BECKY I can not wrap my head around leaving my home for a whole season, let alone all the other aspects of running an RV park. It would be a negative for me to own the park, but I enjoy our family RV trips and the short stay at the parks. This is a cute little book if you enjoy short stories and want a quick read. Happy Holidays! We wish you and your family a blessed holiday and New Year. We always enjoy sharing our love of reading with our community and have discussed many different books over the years. As we move into the new year we will be closing this chapter of Bookends. Thank you for sharing your love of reading with us over the years. We have always enjoyed hearing your thoughts and connections to the novels we discuss. We wish you an unending line of wonderful books that inspire, challenge, entertain, and change you. Pam and Becky

ALLISBRIGHT

Local business owner, Alexa Nugent, of Design for the Holidays, talks about how her parents did an incredible job of making Christmas so emotional. It was never about what was under the tree, but how she and her siblings felt in the home; it was a sanctuary for them. She enjoys helping others decorate their home for the holidays and creating that magic. "It brings you joy. Christmas is nostalgic. It reminds us of the best times of our lives,” Alexa says. She describes how her designing is all about creating a sensory experience – appealing to the eye, the touch, and the heart. Alexa names each tree she decorates. Each one carries a special story. Below are seven steps that Alexa shares for beautiful and meaningful Christmas trees to help brighten your home and heart! 1. Use various lights in combinations. Solid colors, twinkling motion lights, and solid white. Don’t under-light your tree; you want your tree to glisten and move. The variations of lights added to your tree will add dimension and will help your décor on the tree sparkle. 2. Work from the “pole out." Everyone wants to cover the tree, but they must start from the inside first. 3. Bulk & scale. Floral Mesh Wrap, large plastic ornaments, bouquets, stuffed décor, boxes, signs, anything non-ornamental you can use to add heft to your tree. Just think “large” scaled items on this step. They are going to be stuffed in the gaps of the tree to fill and showcase. 4. Picks & stems placed in groupings to spill out of the tree. You want to show connections with your bulk and scale items (outlined in tip 3 above). 5. Variety with repetition ornaments. Buy several of these items, as they are the jewelry of the tree. They will help “marry” the tree décor and be pleasing and connective visually. 6. Sentimental “story” ornaments. These are the final touches that will showcase your special ornaments that mean so much to you and your family. 7. Topper or headpiece. Don’t forget to decorate the top of the tree and the bottom of the tree. You will need multiple types of stems and a “focal piece” at the top of the tree. For the bottom, create a grouping that will make your tree feel connected to the home. Just remember, decorating a Christmas tree is progressive, just as a story is. You have time for it to evolve and grow over the years. Alexa has been in the decorating business since 2008. She took a wreath decorating class in Texas years ago and began helping friends and teaching classes. Eventually, it became a business for her. Design for the Holidays was featured on Denver 7 News in 2017. Alexa can decorate with your own pieces or help you to create a new tree. She also designs mantels, wreaths, and other holiday displays. designfortheholidays@gmail.com Alexanugent@gmail.com Cell 303-886-1443
