protect your pride and joy When Maverick came to his dad Kurt with an idea for starting up a business in Parker it was just the beginning of an 18 month journey which culminated in the opening of RIDE AND JOY TINT off Dransfeld and East Clarke Road in Parker. After all, Maverick’s first bed had a plastic Corvette frame and his love of cars, trucks and just about anything with wheels continued as he grew older. One of the biggest challenges after deciding to specialize in window tint & clear bra paint protection films, finding a location, and becoming Certified 3M Installers, was coming up with a name. The knew it needed to be special, memorable, resonate with the public, and include a brand promise all at the same time. We all remember our first car. They take us special places, with special people, building special memories. It’s a special relationship! A simple play on words and the name was born. Bring your PRIDE AND JOY to RIDE AND JOY TINT - it’s not just their name, it’s their philosophy.

FROM THE PUBLISHER HAPPINESS HAS A PARKER ADDRESS

Now, I know that living in Parker doesn’t give us the exclusive rights to being happy. Happiness can be found in any corner of the world and has more to do with the home than the city you live in. But, living in Parker does make it easy to find that dream. We are Bret and Amber Tueller, and we would like to welcome you to the new Search Parker Magazine. We are so grateful to Mike and Pam Waid, for their years of dedication to, and their love for, this town! We want to continue their legacy with this magazine. When we first moved our family here to Parker some 15 years ago, we had no idea we would grow to love this community so much. We have made some great, life-long friends and continue to be impressed by the people who call Parker home. The opportunity to buy this business from the Waids and integrate ourselves into the community even further has been a great blessing. As we discussed our goals with the magazine and what we hope to accomplish with it, we settled on two very clear directions which lead us to our mantra and crusade.

contribute@tuellers.com

First off, we want to help local business build and be successful. Partnering with local businesses has been a model Mayor Waid established for the magazine, and we will continue true to that pattern.

follow us on social media

Next, we want to unveil all the amazing people, businesses, opportunities, and activites at our feet. We are setting out on a quest to discover the unique and wonderful things and people who make Parker, and the surrounding area, so wonderful. Our social media platform, the articles in the magazine, and our personal efforts will be to show everyone these great finds as we invite you to #LetsGoSearchParker!

IDEAS & SUBMISSIONS

So before I get too sappy about our town (maybe too late), I want to give a few pieces of advice to our readers.

www.searchparker.com

Search Parker is mailed monthly to 25,000 households and businesses in the greater Parker area free of charge. Mail inquiries to Search Parker, 13009 S. 1. Our town is what you make of it. Just like Henry Ford’s famous quote, “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t - you’re right,” so much of our experience with what we like and dislike in this life comes back to our choice of attitude. 2. Keep it local. There are a few things we HAVE to go into Denver for - like a Rockies game - but so many of our needs and wants can be met right here in our community. Before you head 20 miles north, explore the options down 20 mile road. 3. Be kind. We are all neighbors and our interaction is inevitable. The best our community can be will ultimately depend, not on what our area has to offer, but on how we treat each other.

AROUND TOWN TO-DO lessons & lemonade - The free art program for youth in 4th - 8th grades has been happening monthly at Parker’s Hobby Lobby community classroom for 7 years! Students who love art have a 90-minute class, taught by Parker Artists Guild professional and amateur artists who are proficient in their mediums and want to teach art techniques, principles and elements of art to the next generation of Parker area artists. So far this year, young artists have produced oil and pastel paintings, drawings and calligraphy, and done sculpting in clay. Student art is often exhibited at the PACE Center. July 13th’s class will be a Totem Pole Assemblage class with founders Judy Pendleton and Jo Ann Nelson. PAG provides the materials. A new administrator is needed in September to keep the all-volunteer program going. For more information, please contact www.parkerartistsguild.com or judypendleton4@gmail.com. Reservations are required at parkerartistsguild.com under Classes/Youth.

LOCAL happy national ice cream month Celebrate with us at the local favorite - Butterfield’s! Butterfield’s Ice Cream is a family-owned gourmet ice cream parlor, churning out handmade treats since 2015. Todd and Kim are long time Parker residents who set out to make the very best-tasting ice cream out of the freshest ingredients available. They grew their idea to include baked treats, and a family business was born. Their children, Nathan and Danielle, have become accomplished ice cream chefs and make all of the ice cream and baked goods right in the store! They have enjoyed serving Parker and the surrounding communities and look forward to many seasons of scooping up creamy deliciousness for all the ice cream lovers out there. Come taste for yourself why they get such amazing reviews.

BOOKENDS PERENNIALS - BY JULIE CANTRELL

Eva Sutherland, known as Lovey to everyone back home in Mississippi, has a successful career in Arizona. She is about to close her biggest contract when her father insists she come home early for her parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Lovey has spent years running from her sister, Bitsy, and her frequent attacks. As Lovey reluctantly returns to her hometown, she will face the brunt of her sister’s blame, as well as the man she rejected and fled many years ago. PAM This story had me intrigued from the very beginning. As Lovey’s past begins to unfold, it is clear why she ran away to the desert of Arizona. She is as far from her earlier lifestyle as she can be, as she works in her fast-paced career and teaches yoga. Did you find it necessary for Lovey to move so far from her home and family? BECKY I think her move far away made perfect sense, and I imagine it will connect with many readers. She leaves everything Southern behind, including her nickname, and makes a different life in Arizona. I think it’s often easier to leave then to try to fix something broken. I often highlight lines in a book, and I would love to share this one from Lovey: “Every one of us is a messy combination of all that has happened in our lives, all the hurts and heartaches, mishaps and mistakes. But there’s one big difference. Some of us choose to love in spite of it all. And some of us don’t.” Do you think that is true for all of us? Did you feel like the characters represent this statement and the choice to love or shut down? Which character came to mind first? PAM What a great line from the book! I believe this is true of all of us, but it may look different based on our personalities and experiences. I thought of Lovey immediately and how she continued to try to make a connection with her sister. This aspect of Lovey reminds me of myself in that I want so badly to have loving connections and often will continue to try to make this happen even when it isn’t healthy for me. Her sister’s behavior hurt Lovey, but when she wouldn’t allow her to be a part of her niece and nephew’s lives it deeply wounded her. Why do you think her sister did this to Lovey?

BECKY Families can be so complicated. There are always two sides to the story and often a slim area for healing. Likely it was just to hurt her further and remind her of her place in her sister’s heart - or lack thereof. It takes a while for us to understand why her sister is so angry. I can’t say that I agreed, or completely understood why she was so vexed at Lovey, and for so many years. Maybe it was easier to push Lovey out of all their lives instead of resolving the problem with her directly. I think this book would create some great book club discussion. So many of us have family situations like this. It would be interesting to hear from different sides of similar experiences. Lovey’s father is creating a floral garden to present to his wife on their fiftieth anniversary. What did you think about this amazing gift? PAM This is a beautiful gift Lovey’s father is creating for her mother. He is very thoughtful about tying each type of flower to special memories from their lives. He turns the collecting of flowers into family adventures, visiting each special place and remembering special times. He is clearly trying to bring the family together for the sake of Lovey’s mother. Do you think he realizes how much hurt hangs between the sisters? BECKY I’m sure he can see the wedge that is between the two girls, but what can a parent do? If you try to fix it then are you taking sides and the problem grows. I think that the anniversary party gave the girls an opportunity to reconnect, but ultimately it had to be their decision and it couldn’t be forced by others. It is time to move on to a non-fiction book next month with Prognosis HOPE by Angie Felts, RN.

JULY 2019 | SEARCHPARKER 19

In the eyes of many Americans, the Fourth of July is a day for parades, barbecue and, of course, fireworks. Nothing draws crowds or says “July Fourth” like fireworks. The tradition got its start at the beginning of our nation’s history after the Founding Fathers met in Philadelphia to write and sign the Declaration of Independence. A day after the Continental Congress adopted the declaration on July 4, 1776, John Adams - soon the second U.S. president - penned a letter to his wife, Abigail, declaring that Independence Day, “ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.” One year later, in 1777, Philadelphia celebrated the anniversary with fireworks, which Adams dubbed “illuminations,” plus a parade commemorating Independence Day. When we’re watching fireworks, we don’t care who’s sitting next to us. Rich, poor, conservative, liberal, none of that matters. All we want is an unobstructed view. We want to see the joy in our kids’ faces, to hear their “oohs” and “ahs” - and maybe feel like a kid ourselves for a while. For those 20 minutes we are all, simply, Americans. Here is a listing of the best celebrations and displays available in our county.

parker stars and stripes celebration 6:00 - 10:00PM - Salisbury Park

Six Million Dollar Band will be mixing it up with patriotic music and jamming to 80’s hits from 6 to 9:15 p.m. The evening will conclude with Parker’s biggest and best fireworks display to date, beginning at 9:30 p.m.

Live musical performances by School of Rock and Syndicate. Food vendors on hand. The fireworks show is revered as “one of the best in Colorado,” and starts at 9:30 p.m.

castle rock fireworks

9:30PM - santa fe quarry mesa

lone tree celebration

Kids bike parade, interactive inflatables, games, face painting, water slide and so much more! Entertainment throughout the day will include live music and acts from various area artists. Fireworks at 9:30pm.

I have been going to this salon for a few years now and have never had a bad experience. I’ve used several stylists, have never had to be picky about who does my hair because they’re all good. Today Autumn did my highlights and they look beautiful. This place straight up rocks. ~ Marie Lena is the best with everything. She is so fantastic at color. She helped me figure out how to change up my color & cut. I needed her professional advice & love the new style. This salon always exceeds my expectations so I can be professional and have a relaxed style. ~ Teresa Christy is amazing, kind and talented! So glad I found Hair Color Xperts! ~ Toni
