hen Galen and Lauren Hafla were growing up in Montana, neither one would have ever guessed they would one day own a Hawaiian Shave Ice store in Parker, Colorado. While both were earning engineering degrees (Galen in chemical and Lauren in metallurgical), they probably could not have told you the difference between a snow cone and shave ice. But fast forward to today and the Hafla family has brought the best shave ice to Parker. The Haflas know the difference between snow cones and shave ice now. In fact, it is one of the most asked questions they get at the store. Shave ice resembles fine fluffy snow and is topped with flavored syrups, which are quickly absorbed into the dessert because of the ice’s powdery texture. What you're left with is a dessert, rather than flavored ice chunks. Aside from shave ice, you can also indulge in Farr's ice cream and real fruit smoothies.

10 SEARCHPARKER | JULY 2020

Hokulia has become a local favorite for summertime treats and prides itself on authenticity. The Hawaiian-inspired soft and fluffy shave ice is generously topped with one of 50 flavors imported from Hawaii. Hokulia’s ice is not ground or gritty, but shaved into ultra thin ribbons. Make your treat authentic by adding a scoop of ice cream in the middle, creamy Sno Cap topping, or a local Hawaiian favorite by sprinkling Li Hing Mui Powder or Coconut Flakes on top. Galen and Lauren are excited to be part of the community and know they belong here. Faith plays a large roll in their lives and they want to continue to give back to the community that has been so good to them. The Haflas' dream of a family-owned business came true by building the first Hokulia store inside Walmart. Galen summed it up, "Our family is growing; the business is growing; we are blessed by our employees and their families, and the community..."

# Celebration A look back at the various festivities in our town to honor our nation's birth BY AMBER TUELLER PHOTOS COURTESY OF DOUGLAS COUNTY LIBRARY ARCHIVES

12 SEARCHPARKER | JULY 2020

I

In honoring the birth of our country this month, we wanted to see how Parker has celebrated this day throughout history. Catherine Traffis, vice president of the Parker Area Historical Society helped us with some research. Sandra Welchel, former president of the society, wrote Images of America: Parker and A Folk History of Parker and Hilltop, in which she shares some of this information.

A very memorable Fourth of July in 1899 was written about in The Weekly Mascot from Castle Rock. The article told of the Parker Baseball team beating the Eagle Athletic Club, respectively scoring 21 and 9. It also describes the horse race after the game in which the horses and riders were so close it was hard for spectators to tell the winner. The judges announced that the horse with its tongue stuck out had won the race! [Folk History, pp. 70-71] "In Parker's earlier days, fireworks were not regulated. The Fourth of July brought a mixture of excitement and fear. Old-fashioned Roman candles spewed fountains of beautiful colors, torches burst with more varieties than the rainbow, and everyone had to have a sparkler." [Folk History, pp 70-71] In the early 1900s, the holiday was also celebrated with a baseball game, parades, and picnics. "Many of the parades in town included music from the Parker Band. Resident James Newcomb formed the band early in his residency and entertained locals at every opportunity." They often wore traditional straw hats and white suits. "Equestrian entries [were] an important part of the Fourth of July parades. Whether a 4-H horse club or the Parker Trail Riders, horses played an important part in the celebration." [Images of America: Parker, pp 83-85] This tradition continues for modern-day Parker in our Christmas Carriage Parade. The Parker High School Marching Band would often join the parades. This picture (top) shows the marching band in front of the Ruth Memorial Chapel in uniform, holding their instruments and standing in formation. Currently named the Schoolhouse at Mainstreet, the Parker Consolidated School was built in 1915 and closed in 1958, when students were sent to Douglas County High School. Today our traditions focus around many of the same events. In a normal year without a pandemic, our summer parade has moved to be in conjunction with Parker Days. The Town of Parker typically produces a huge and beautiful fireworks display, along with social gatherings and live music. Despite the growth and sprawl of our growing town, it still radiates the atmosphere of a small town summer. It feels good to be part of something timeless. Thank you, Parker, and Happy Birthday, America!

Life on the lake Cool off this summer at one of the Front Range's great swimming holes

Prospect Lake

This 58-acre lake is part of 194-acre Memorial Park in Colorado Springs. In a convenient location, it is just east of downtown with beautiful Pikes Peak in the background. The Family Center YMCA is built next door with many options for recreation. The city-center park is a great spot for families to gather and enjoy the outdoors. This lake is currently closed due to blue-green algae. For more information, see coloradosprings.gov under Community Parks then Memorial Park. 16 SEARCHPARKER | JULY 2020

Aurora Reservoir

The reservoir, with 800 acres of surface area, is located in the southeastern corner of Aurora. It provides drinking water to the city and also serves as a versatile recreation area. A unique SCUBA beach is reserved for diving on the northeastern edge and is a place for open-water certifications. A small airplane was deliberately sunk to become a diving attraction. Find more information at www.auroragov.org/things_to_do/reservoirs.

Cherry Creek Reservoir

Just southeast of downtown Denver is the Cherry Creek State Park. The 880-acre surface area of water is a beautiful setting for recreation. The park is set in a natural prairie with rolling hills and affords many ways to enjoy it. Camping, water sports, trails and outdoor facilities are popular in this convenient spot. See cpw.state.co.us for more information.

Bear Creek Lake Park

In Lakewood, Bear Creek Lake Park sits on 2,624 acres of space provided for outdoor leisure. The park includes three lakes: Bear Creek Lake (110 acres of surface area) is open to motorized boating. Big Soda Lake is similar in size and limited to non-motorized boats. Little Soda Lake is only open to Water Ski School’s private boats. The park sits against the mountains and close to the Red Rocks amphitheater. Find out details at lakewood.org.

Chatfield Reservoir

Chatfield State Park straddles Douglas County and Jefferson County and is settled near the base of the Front Range mountains. In the park, Chatfield Reservoir offers 1,423 acres of surface water. This beautiful, man-made lake offers a huge variety of outdoor recreation! Among the less unique activities provided at Chatfield are hot air ballooning and model air plane flying in a specialized field. See cpw.state.co.us for more information.

Bingham Lake

This beautiful neighborhood lake is a convenient spot to fish or enjoy the view around the lake trail. Bingham Lake is a 30-acre lake in the Pinery subdivision in Parker. Bingham Lake is privately owned by the Pinery Water & Wastewater District. This allows for fishing on the lake without the need for a fishing license. There is also a playground in the neighboring greenspace. See www. pinery.org/bingham-lake for more information. JULY 2020 | SEARCHPARKER 17

OUT & ABOUT

DATE NIGHT

This ladies’ cut shirt has a feminine fit and offers the height of comfort. Flirty and fun, the skirt is a nice in-between look – not too formal, but a little dressed up. The neutral wedges dress up a skirt or pants while keeping your feet cool. When you’re on the go, the crossbody purse is the perfect size to keep the essentials close. Think shopping or going out to lunch.

The sundress is a classic summer beauty with a lovely look and feel. The denim jacket is a nice addition to take the chill off when evening sets in. Sturdy sandals top off the ensemble, suited for walking downtown streets. An excellent combo to keep the romance alive!

LOS DOS POTRILLOS Adding a brewery to an established Mexican joint was risky, but the Ramirezes aren't done. They have plans to add a second level to the patio seating. The party continues at Los Dos. 10335 S. Parker Road | 303-805-9742

RORY'S DINER Comfort food gets even more comfortable when you are streetside in downtown Parker. The ambiance of the patio makes you loose track of time. If the nostalgia doesn't get you, the chicken fried steak will. 11020 South Pikes Peak Drive | 720-708-2889

SPICE KITCHEN A great family atmosphere. Still right on Main Street, but removed enough that you seemingly don't hear the traffic. An additional plus of covered or open air patio seating option. 19751 Mainstreet | 303-945-4168

TAILGATE TAVERN Nobody parties like Tailgate Tavern! The most well-known patio dining in town, and with good reason. Don't look for a quiet evening here. Live bands keep the party rolling. 19552 Mainstreet | 303-841-7179

THE UPPER DECK GOURMET BURGERS & SPIRITS The second-story venue serves up large portions and great service. It also offers incredible views from the 2500 square foot outdoor pergola-covered patio. Fire pits, sofas, and mounted TVs complete the atmosphere. 18595 Mainstreet | 720-572-1910

“I had asked about the safety precautions before I made my appointment. Once I got there I was very comfortable that they are very serious about protecting the health of their staff and their clients. As usual, they did a great job with my haircut.” ~ Cheryl
