PROFILE LOCAL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Have you heard the news? Sweetpea Children’s Dentistry is on the move! The new building is conveniently located just 1 block north of Lincoln on the west side of Jordan, which is only 1 block south from Sweetpea’s previous location. The new address is 9870 Mangano Lane, Parker, CO 80134…..on the corner of Jordan Road and Centre Court. Dr. Beth Nielsen and Dr. Ashley Barefoot are award-winning, board certified pediatric dentists. Combining the knowledge gained from their extensive training and the patience learned from being moms, Dr. Beth and Dr. Ashley have mastered the art of providing compassionate, caring, individualized dental care. Many people don’t realize that pediatric dentists complete a 2-3 year residency beyond the training of a general dentist making them uniquely qualified to care for infants, children, adolescents, teens and those with special healthcare needs. Sweetpea’s top priority is and has always been to create a comfortable, fun, and educational experience for children and parents alike. The new office incorporates the following features to give patients the best experience possible: • Designated teen area – Many of Sweetpea’s original patients are now teenagers. Sweetpea recognizes that their adolescent patients experience many changes in their lives and changing dentists should not have to be one of them. Therefore, a new area was created just for them. • Sensory-friendly treatment rooms – There are many patients who have sensory processing differences, autism, ADHD, and a variety of other special healthcare needs. Sweetpea believes in celebrating neurodiversity and has worked closely with experts in the field to modify the typical dental room to help facilitate successful visits for every patient. • Ceiling-mounted televisions - Treatment rooms are equipped with a TV for added comfort and fun. Patients are invited to relax and watch a movie while receiving dental care. • Video Games – There is an entire wall in the waiting room dedicated to video games including touch screen and Nintendo Switch. • Technology – The office is equipped with the latest technology including low radiation digital x-rays and BPA-free tooth colored fillings. • Complimentary dental visits – Any child under 24 months of age is seen at no charge for routine visits. This allows the establishment of a dental home and helps create a positive impression so children will look forward to coming back to their future dental visits. • Flexible scheduling – Early morning and evening hours are available to accommodate any parent’s busy schedule. • Insurance – We work with most insurance plans. Dr. Beth and Dr. Ashley live in and love the local community. Dr. Beth grew up in Parker and both Dr. Beth and Dr. Ashley completed their residencies at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Both doctors have had the opportunity to treat so many families in Parker and other surrounding areas that it is common for patients to run into their friends and neighbors at the office. Sweetpea would love the opportunity to treat your children. Please call today (303-841-9009) or visit the website where you can request an appointment!

BOOKENDS THE WINTER SISTER - BY MEGAN COLLINS

Sixteen years ago, teenage Persephone never came home. She snuck out to see her boyfriend but never made it back into her bedroom. Horrifically, three days later her body is found in the snow and no arrest was made. Her sister, Sylvie, is now an adult and must return to her hometown to care for her mother as she battles cancer. They are no longer close, so as Sylvie tries to navigate this challenging time, she is also found face to face at the cancer treatment facility with the man she believes killed her sister. There is much to untangle in this complicated mystery. BECKY Wow, this story starts quickly! From the very first sentence we are taken on a ride. There is not a slow introduction into the family or situation. Did you find this frustrating or exhilarating? PAM I found this quick start had me scrambling to get to know the characters, but effectively pulled me into the story. There were many different aspects to each relationship between the characters and this kept the story interesting and dynamic. This also meant a lot of conflict between characters. Did this make the story more intriguing or exhausting for you? BECKY This style worked for me, but I agree, it took a moment to figure out exactly whom everyone was, but it was clear enough that it didn’t frustrate me. There is conflict everywhere, but the most interesting to me was the relationship between Sylvie and her mother. It also felt the most realistic and had the most depth. I love debut novels and this one doesn’t disappoint, but it did lack, in my opinion, some complexity. Did you feel like the pace was good and did the author create a vivid picture for you? PAM The author set a good pace for the story, as she revealed the pieces of this puzzle. I read, eager to see the full picture of this story. Sylvia’s mother resorted to alcohol to help dull the pain when Persephone’s body was found. Sylvie’s aunt stepped in to help and became the stable, loving support in her young life. Did you love this character for her giving heart? BECKY I connected with the Aunt quickly because that would be my personality. I know from experience how wonderful, yet exhausting, that role can be. That storyline spoke volumes to me. I love that she stepped in when necessary, but at the right time she forced Sylvie to return and face her demons. Sylvie had a couple of relationships to repair. Dealing with her mother I found interesting, but the tangled web with the boy, now man, that she accused of murdering her sister, I found lackluster. Did it draw you in and did the author keep the suspense smoldering while you read?

PAM I agree that the storyline with the man she knew when she was younger did not reach its potential. I had expected more suspense and depth, but it seemed to skim the surface. However, the story kept me reading until the end. Sylvie is struggling in her life at this time and seems lost. Did you feel that this was the perfect time to face her demons? BECKY Is there ever a perfect time? I think most people avoid that ugly situation until it is plopped into our laps. Sylvie returns home reluctantly because of her estranged relationship. However, it came right when she was let go at her job so the timing fell perfectly into place. This felt too contrived for me but it did make the timing perfect. She went through the motions with her mother, but her pull was to continue the search for her sister’s killer. Did you feel like this was more of a mystery or is it a bit misleading and the story is more about a hurting family? PAM I feel that both are represented in this story, although it certainly leans heavily on the focus of a hurting family. Sylvie is driven to solve her sister’s murder, but every aspect of her life is impacted by her broken relationship with her mother. Sylvie runs into the man who was her sister’s boyfriend while taking her mother for cancer treatment. This reunion is interesting as Sylvie believes he killed her sister, while he is shocked to realize she believes this. Did you feel that this part of the story did not go as deep as it could have? BECKY Once again, this was a little too contrived for me, but there is a nice little curve at the end so hang in there, for there is more to come as the story progresses. Although this won’t find a spot on our favorites list, it was an interesting read, so check it out. We are ready to say goodbye to this light mystery. Join us next month as we discuss Perennials by Julie Cantrell.

They run out into the storm to clear a path for us; leave early to save us seats; build or fix our variety of contraptions; coach us through sports, jobs, and school; cheer us through our best or worst days; know how to lighten a sour mood; and so much more! We appreciate husbands, fathers, and father figures, and everything they do for us. Be sure to throw some love their way this month on Father’s Day. 24 SEARCHPARKER | JUNE 2019

Kim does an amazing job. I came in with red hair and now I have a beautiful balayage look. She made my confidence level go up so much, she listened to what I wanted and told me what would work and wouldn’t. I referred my mother to her as well and the confidence boost she gave my mom as well made me so happy. So thank you for hiring Kim! ~ Hannah Kat never ceases to amaze me how she makes hair day.. hair-apy... I feel so relaxed going there and I always leave feeling pretty. Front desk staff is awesome too. ~ Wendy
