As he donned his boots and gloves, he caught the sight of an old snow shovel, collecting dust in the garage. “I won’t be needing this anymore,” he thought, as he opened the door and stepped onto a freshly shovelled walkway.

EDITORSTAKE PARKERRACQUETCLUB I had the opportunity to take a tennis lesson from Steve Prosowski at Parker Racquet Club to step up my game a little bit! I am a beginning tennis player and just learned how to play last summer at our neighborhood courts. I had an hour-long lesson, but the time seemed to go by quickly and I really enjoyed it! Parker Racquet Club is very nice and modern, but not overly formal. The lobby area has tables and chairs to socialize or wait and has a beautiful outdoor patio where events are sometimes hosted. The fieldhouse portion has multiple courts with space above to watch. Steve began the lesson by showing me the correct stance with arm and wrist position. He showed me the grip for each hand and explained why the grip on the racquet was important. I practiced grip, then I started up near the net and practiced the step forward and swing, hitting the ball many times, hitting 20-30 balls in a row in that stance and again with my backhand. I then practiced the pivot and hip motion on both sides from the back of the court. If it went too far, I thought I needed to hit softer, but I learned I could adjust my racquet grip and positioning to get the ball closer to the target without having to hold back on the swing. It really helped me to learn the reasoning behind the angles and positions and to practice these motions repeatedly. Steve is a co-owner of the Parker Racquet Club and really showed his excitement for the tennis sport and for the new facility. He has coached high school tennis and played at a professional level. Even with all his experience, I did not feel embarrassed at my beginning level. He helped me to feel excited and self-assured as we worked through each step. I felt confident through the lesson that I was learning and improving. Steve was helpful and encouraging and practicing the same motions over and over was huge help. I felt like the entire facility was very welcoming and encouraging. Before going I was worried that I would be self-conscious, but it was not an intimidating environment. There were other individual and group lessons going on during mine. I would highly recommend taking an individual or group lesson on a regular basis! What a fun way to exercise! Here are a few highlights about the club: PRC is open to the public with no membership required. Those who do want to pay a membership fee will receive added discounts and options on a monthly basis. The Racquet Club offers a variety of lessons, classes and drop-in drills. The club also hosts adult and junior tournaments featuring singles, doubles and mixed competition for all levels. Parker Racquet Club offers opportunities for tennis and pickle ball. It is a beautiful facility to be able to learn, play, and exercise year-round. 8 SEARCHPARKER | MARCH 2020

AROUNDTOWN THINGSTODO Trails Across Douglas County: From Footpaths to Interstate Across the Arkansas/Platte Divide Beginning with Native American footpaths along the base of the Rocky Mountains, the Monument Creek, Plum Creek, and Cherry Creek waterways have evolved into major north-south transportation corridors. The Trappers Trail, Smoky Hill Trail, and Cherokee Trail were used by mountain men, military expeditions, gold seekers, and homesteaders. The Denver & Rio Grande and the Denver & New Orleans railroads provided the transportation systems needed for Douglas County growth. Named “auto trails” such as the National Park-to-Park Highway, preceded U.S. Highway 85, also known as the “Ribbon of Death.” Colorado Highway 83, with its "Bridge to Nowhere," was the original planned route for I- 25. Join Lee and Jane Whiteley, authors of five books on early transportation systems of the West and associate producers of the PBS documentary Paving the Way, the National Park-to-Park Highway, for an interesting look at how travel across Douglas County has evolved in the last 150 years. OPPORTUNITYKNOCKS 2020 Scholarships Help Young Baseball/Softball Players in Need The Double Angel Foundation (DAF) is awarding $7,000 in baseball/softball scholarships in 2020 so that enthusiastic ballplayers between the ages of 5 and 18 can enjoy their sport. A total of $3,000 is dedicated for individual baseball and softball players who love their sport but are unable to pay for all the costs associated with competition. These scholarships can be used for all types of baseball and softball programs to pay for registration fees, tournament costs, uniforms and equipment. To apply for scholarships, young athletes in Douglas County and the Denver metro area are asked to provide information about themselves and their financial need. They must also include a recommendation from their coach or parents. The remaining $4,000 will be donated to Parker Youth Sports to help local youngsters who are involved in its programs and to purchase new equipment. The scholarship program was organized in 2000 to honor Dillon and Logan Dixey, two Parker brothers who loved baseball but tragically drowned after being overcome by carbon monoxide while swimming at the rear of a houseboat. DAF also constructed a baseball complex in Parker to provide more fields for youth to play the game. For information visit doubleangel.org or email doubleangelorg@msn.com. HISTORYHASHTAG In honor of St. Patrick’s Day we wanted to highlight some local Irish heritage. Patrick Murphy was a legendary man who lived near the southern part of Douglas County in the beginnings of settling this area. Patrick was born in Cork County, Ireland, on March 16, 1821. He left Ireland on April 21, 1864 at the age of 43 to come to America on a ship named “The Kangaroo.” He landed in New York and went through Tennessee and Missouri through a variety of jobs. He ended up in Monument, Colorado in 1865. He could not fight in the Civil War because he was not an American Citizen, but he did become a cook at Fort Bent for the Union army. While there, he became good friends with Joe Pettigrew, a Monument early pioneer. When the war ended Patrick left Fort Bent and walked across the countryside. He fell asleep on a hill one night and the next morning awoke to a surprise. A group of Native Americans were nearby, packed and painted, ready for war. Mr. Murphy knew that if he turned back, they would eventually find him. So, he boldly walked down the hill, through the camp, and kept on his way. They did not do or say a thing, but simply looked astonished and muttered to one another. When he reached the Palmer Divide region Patrick knew he wanted to settle and started his homestead near Spring Valley, Larkspur area, in 1870. He built his cabin using a stacking method called steeple notching shown here. After getting set up on his homestead, he walked back to Fort Bent to tell Joe Pettigrew about the fine country, and Joe came to join him in the Spring Valley area. Joe’s homestead is still known as Pettigrew Place on Highway 83. “Irish Pat” became his nickname. He was said to be a small, wiry man, about 100 pounds. He was an avid walker. He often walked to Monument and Colorado Springs with a large basket of eggs to trade for groceries. On one occasion while walking from Spring Valley to Colorado Springs he was offered a ride, but he declined because he was “in a hurry.” Pat was well known in the community. He never married, but he loved children and enjoyed having company. He kept candy with him to give out to children. Pat could not read or write, but he had a quick wit. He was a devout Catholic and attended St. Peter’s Church in Monument.
#IRISHPAT
Patrick Murphy was a remarkable man with great health. At 100 years of age he was very sharp and alert, quick, and lively; he walked as straight as any young man. All who knew him dearly loved him. On St. Patrick’s Day of 1921, Monument planned a big celebration for Pat’s 100th birthday, but there was a huge spring blizzard and the party was postponed. When he was 100 years old, he rented his land to Tom Long. Two men with two, six-foot binders were cutting the grain on his place and Mr. Murphy was shocking it, keeping up with the binders. At 101 he ran a race in the main street of Monument with a man many years his junior and won; then he danced at a dinner given in his honor that night. When he was 102 years old, he climbed halfway to the summit of Pike’s Peak. He lived on his 1,100-acre ranch until he was 101 years old when he went to live with Mr. and Mrs. James Pettigrew for a time. He later stayed in St. Francis hospital where his Irish wit and jigs made him a favorite with the nurses. When he passed away at age 105, he was the oldest member of the Knights of Columbus in the world, and the oldest man in the State of Colorado. He died July 3rd, 1926 at 105 years, 3 months, and 17 days of age. He is buried in the Spring Valley Cemetery near his home. For more information, palmerdividehistory.org

Lena is the absolute best. I recently had major shoulder surgery. Having Lena come to my rescue really was so relaxing and very much appreciated. My appointments always greatly surpass a trip to the spa. ~ Janice I have been a client of Heather’s for a few years, and I’m always extremely pleased with the results. She takes the time to understand what you’re looking for as far as style, and she offers suggestions regarding the various options available given your hair type, facial structure, and other considerations. Her skills are unparalleled. Additionally, her personality and kindness always make the visit even more pleasant. Similarly, the “studio” itself is very modern yet also welcoming. I highly recommend the salon and my stylist in particular. ~ Anonymous
