THE PATRON SAINT OF LIARS - BY ANN PATCHETT Rose travels all the way from California to Kentucky by herself to reach St. Elizabeth’s, a home for unwed mothers. She is not unwed, but has run from her husband and her mother because she feels she cannot be a mother to this child. Rose decides to stay and make her home among the nuns and unwed mothers at St. Elizabeth’s.
PAM Cecelia’s story seemed to tie them all together for me. I felt that I could relate to her and her challenges. Cecelia is surrounded by people who love her and give her attention. The only person who does not give her the attention she craves is Rose. This relationship was very complicated and had many different aspects. Rose was not a demonstrative person at the best of times, and this was challenging for Cecelia. Do you think it was helpful or hurtful that Cecelia had so many others ready to focus on her when it was absent from Rose?
Becky and Pam Pam and Becky have been reviewing books for over 10 years. Pam and her husband have lived in Parker for 19 years with their two wonderful sons. She has always been an avid reader and enjoys exploring new books. Becky has been married for 24 years and lived in Parker for 10 years. She has two children, a daughter and a son. She is a Colorado native and has loved reading since she was a child.
PAM I was drawn to this book because we have read others by this author and enjoyed them. This book follows the story of Rose, but gives us the perspectives of other characters in separate sections of the story. Did you enjoy this writing style or do you prefer when the perspectives are blended together in time? BECKY I thought that this style worked beautifully for this story. Each section had a smooth transition and a new view of the story. There are four sections. We begin with a short history about the town, Habit, where the majority of the story takes place and where St. Elizabeth’s is located. Then we move to Rose and her story of arriving in Habit until she is well into her pregnancy. Next, we hear the story from Son, a caretaker at St. Elizabeth’s. The last part is from Rose’s daughter, Cecilia. Which of these characters or sections grabbed your attention?
12 SEARCHPARKER | SEPTEMBER 2019
BECKY I think that it was both helpful and hurtful, depending on her age and the needs she had in the moment. For the most part, she was surrounded by young women, and I feel that they were more on the level of a friend or buddy than a parental role. The young pregnant girls gave her much desired attention, but, unfortunately, it didn’t replace the love and direction she desired from her mother. As much as it was hard for me to understand how Rose could be so chilly towards her daughter, I like that it wasn’t a perfect relationship. I think a book club would have a great discussion about the topic of motherhood. What did you think about the male character that becomes a fantastic father to Cecelia? Did you enjoy this strong male role? PAM I felt that this character represented stability and unconditional love in this complicated family’s relationships. He was constant and loving, while Rose was not able to be this for her daughter. We learn of this character’s story, as well as his unique perspective of the main storyline. He had a sad chain of events that led him to St. Elizabeth’s. He unexpectedly decided to stay at this home for unwed mothers, as a handyman. Do you think the need to help take care of the women at the home was what kept him there all those years? BECKY I think it was just easy to stay. He was a lost person when he stumbled upon St. Elizabeth’s, and it became a comfortable place for him. He helped them and found a place to settle as he tried to heal from his past. What I found most interesting is that the nuns and the handyman were the constants in an environment where everyone was always leaving. Another interesting topic for a book club. Come back next month and see if No Exit, by Taylor Adams, gets us ready for Halloween.

#LEGEN Many came to Colorado for the prospect of gold during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush. Gold was first discovered in the state in 1858 at Little Dry Creek, in the Englewood area. In the next year 100,000 people rushed into the Denver area and settlements sprang up. The railroad also came through Douglas County in the early 1900s, but flooding along Cherry Creek continued to plague the track, and much of it was discontinued by 1935.
adjoining railroad lines up and down the Front Range and east into Kansas and Nebraska. It was located on Pilgrim’s Place Road in Parker. The Sedalia Creamery, built in the late 1800s, was located south of the railroad tracks and was near East Plum Creek. It was made of stone on the bottom floor, with two floors above that were made of wood. A huge pulley system was attached to the ceiling and machinery. Wagons full of milk cans would come to the creamery for services. This photo of the Castle Rock Creamery was taken in the early 1900s, showing automobiles in place of wagons bringing milk cans to the creamery. It still stands at 407 Jerry Street in Castle Rock and now serves as a funeral home.
When the hope for gold had lost its luster, settlers turned to their previous occupations. They combined farming and ranching to make it in a new life. Many pioneers in the area were Swedish, Danish, or Norwegian, and began to establish dairy farms. Hard work and many hours of milking were part of their regular routine. The Littleton Creamery, built in 1884, collected milk and cream from dairy farms in the area and turned them into cheese, butter, and ice cream! By 1888, the creamery processed milk from about 1000 cows. The building was later used for high school and church classes. It is still standing at 2675 West Alamo in Littleton and is an antique shop. The Parker Creamery, also known as the Littleton Creamery at Parker, was built in 1897 on land donated by George Parker. It was one of many milk separation stations 16 SEARCHPARKER | SEPTEMBER 2019

At one point there were seven successful creameries in Douglas County: Castle Rock, Hill Top, Sedalia, Parker, Larkspur, Spring Valley and Franktown. They provided dairy products for Denver and the surrounding areas. The Welte Cheese Ranch was a famous cheese factory in the Highlands Ranch area. Even at the end of the 1900s there were still close to 200 dairies in Douglas County. Last year that number was down to 61. Times and towns have changed over the decades, but the dairy tradition is a part of our county’s history and culture.

But don’t take our word for it, take the challenge yourself. Visit 10 local restaurants in the next 30 days and tell us what some of your favorite dishes are at contribute@tuellers.com. We might disagree, but it will be a “tasteful” argument!

The Table The kitchen table is a well-used space. Through the day and week, it serves many purposes. In our home it is a place where homework is done, papers are sorted, projects are created, groceries are unloaded, games are played, and books are read. But at the end of each day it becomes a treasured place – a place to gather, a place where people come together. For a few moments a day, it is a place to stop. Sitting around the table enjoying a meal, conversation, and laughter, is a blessed event. It is a necessary ritual that binds us together and fills our bodies and spirits. Our time together celebrates everything the table represents: food, family, fun, and home. The table is also a place to share with neighbors, friends, and loved ones. The pineapple, with its stately shape and happy colors, is a symbol of welcome and hospitality. It is a delicious addition to any meal. To echo the sentiment of friendship and warmth, we want to share a special recipe: grilled pineapple. This unique and scrumptious treat is a family favorite. We hope you enjoy it! From our table and home to yours.
Grilled Pineapple
One whole pineapple ½ cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon gallon-size zip baggie Cut the top and skin off the outside of pineapple. Stand pineapple upright and cut down to create long, thick spears; discard center core. Place pineapple spears, brown sugar, and cinnamon in baggie and shake/rub until pineapple is coated. Place in a baking dish and let marinate for 1 hour. Grill on BBQ until grill lines appear and it is warmed through.

I have been Lena’s client since moving to the area about 5 years ago. She has kept me on track with her expertise & top-notch advice. As a corporate trainer my hair is “one of those things” to stay on top of, and this salon always takes care of me. They are great at working out a schedule, are consistent & reliable. Very nice staff with a warm, professional salon design. I would recommend Lena - she is so color knowledgeable & I love getting my hair done by her!! ~ Teresa I am so glad I found Leah. It is hard to find someone so personal and professional. My color is always perfect because we discuss it every time. ~ LaVonne I will send more people to Autumn. This girl is outstanding and did such and amazing job on my hair. I have never been so happy with my results! If you are looking for a new hairdresser, you GOTTA GO SEE AUTUMN!!! ~ Melody Kat is terrific. I have been going to her for two years and have always left with fantastic hair.
