PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2017-2018 Ponderosa Athletic Season! We’re excited to see our student-athletes compete at a high level. The reward of athletic participation is immediate and enduring at Ponderosa High School – Home of the Mustangs.

Our coaches and staff are committed to developing well-rounded student athletes. While students are involved in our athletic programs, they will learn valuable lessons to guide them through life. We strive to be part of a team comprised of family members, educators, and community partners to assist our young people in achieving their goals while growing into healthy, happy, and productive young adults.

We work hard, play hard, and have fun while coming together to reach

our full potential as a team.

As members of the PHS athletic program, our student athletes will represent families, the community, teammates and coaches as ambassadors of Ponderosa’s tradition of good sportsmanship. Striving to be leaders and conducting themselves in a manner to ensure success is a primary goal for our student athletes.

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the 2017 fall sports season! Our coaches and athletes have been working very hard over the summer to prepare for this day, and are ready to compete! Look for 2017 to be another banner year for the Mustangs! Even though we’re half the size of the other high schools in Douglas County, we hold our own! We’re small, but mighty, and have a tradition of excellence!

Over the past 35 years, Ponderosa has had a strong history of success in its athletic programs, including 31 State Championships and 120 League Championships in various sports (the most among all high schools in Douglas County!). This kind of success doesn’t just happen, but is rather the result of hard work, positive attitudes, support and collaboration among students, coaches, teachers, parents, administration and community members.

At Ponderosa, involvement in extracurricular athletics and activities is viewed as an integral part of a student’s high school experience.

Through participation in these programs, students learn lifelong lessons such as teamwork, self-discipline, work ethic, accountability, time management and sportsmanship. It’s a proven fact that students who are involved in extracurricular programs get better grades, have better attendance, and fewer discipline problems than those who do not participate.

Sportsmanship is very important at Ponderosa High School. We expect everyone associated with Ponderosa to exemplify the utmost

in good sportsmanship. Please remember to cheer for our team, and be positive and supportive, both in the stands and at home. It’s important for us to be humble in victory and gracious in defeat.

ATHLETIC TRAINERS Head Athletic Trainer Chris Mathewson enters his 24th season as the Head Athletic Trainer of Ponderosa. Chris also coordinates the Douglas County School District Athletic Trainers Group and has lead the group for the past ten years. In February of 2015, Chris and a partner formed a company “Athletic Safety Consultants, LLC”. They are currently in development stages of a text-book and educational seminars for athletic safety.

In addition to being a Certified Athletic Trainer Chris is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. Chris received his Bachelors degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Wyoming in 1994. In 2001 he received his Masters degree in Sports Medicine from the United States Sports Academy.

Chris spends a lot of time volunteering in his “spare time”. Currently Chris sits on the board of directors of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Chris just finished serving as the secretary of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association. He has served as the President of the Colorado Athletic Trainers Association for 6 years and was instrumental in the passage of a state regulatory law for athletic trainers. At Ponderosa Chris also leads the Fellowship of Christian Athletes club.

Chris has received several awards for his efforts: • Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association Hall of Fame March 2017 • Colorado Athletic Trainers Association Robert Ryan Service Award May 2015 • Ponderosa High School Hall of Fame, September 2014 • Rocky Mountain Athletic Trainers Association Distinguished Service Award, April 2014 • “Excellence In Colorado High School Athletic Training Award” presented by the Denver Nuggets, March 2005 • April 2004 “Above the Call Award” from Training and Conditioning magazine, April 2004 Chris is married and lives in Parker with his wife Wendy and daughters Taylor and Bailey and dogs Tink and Mookie.

Assistant Athletic Trainer Tyler Ubben is a proud graduate from the DCSD who graduated in 2013 and was a former Athletic Training student at Douglas County High School.

After sustaining a broken nose during the 20112012 basketball season, he decided to pursue a degree in Athletic Training. He would apply and be accepted into the Athletic Training Program at the University of Northern Colorado in 2015.

He has worked with division 1 athletes and high school athletes across many sports including Track and Field, Volleyball, Soccer, Basketball, and Softball. From here Tyler would graduate with a degree in Athletic Training in 2017. In the summer of 2017, Tyler took and passed the national athletic training exam and became the Assistant Athletic trainer at Ponderosa High School.

This summer, he was lucky enough to be allowed to stay on as a seasonal maintenance worker in the Town of Castle Rock parks department, and continues to work there in the mornings before heading to Ponderosa for the afternoon. At UNC, Tyler was elected the president of the UNC Athletic Training Society, a campus club by athletic training students for athletic training students. As president, he was responsible for planning, funding, and executing events, volunteer opportunities, and fundraisers throughout campus.

During his free time (What’s free time??), Tyler enjoys working out, playing with his two dogs, playing video games, or getting together with friends (at least friends that are still around the area). Although he follows many sports, his is favorite sport is basketball and is an avid follower of college basketball. The month of March is

filled with countless brackets and either CBS, truTV, TNT, or TBS always on. He has a beautiful wife of one and a half years who is putting herself through an online pharmacy school through Creighton University.

Tyler considers himself very lucky and blessed to be able to start his athletic training career in the same school district that formed the man he is today. He looks forward to a wonderful time working with Chris Mathewson at Ponderosa High School and helping young athletes with injuries that he himself has probably sustained during his high school athletic career. Tyler’s ultimate goal is to have a full time athletic training job in the Continental League.

Ponderosa Mustang football is a program that aims to develop all our student-athletes on and off the field. We are intentional with teaching core values that will transcend the football field. In the past three years with our current staff, we have won two league titles, earned a state playoff berth each year, and won 23 games. However, we are most proud of the fine work of our players off the field, including those who are attending schools of higher learning and representing the Mustangs on the gridiron and in the classroom. Message From The Coach: The Boys Tennis Team and Coaches are so excited for the 2017 tennis season to be starting. This year we are excited to have a team filled with returning veteran players, including 4 Seniors and 7 players who competed in the 5A State Tournament last season. Adding in are our new young, hungry and talented players who are ready for their turn to compete, getting us all excited for the season ahead! As a team we are committed to working our hardest to fight for a league title and make our way to Regional Champions! We need your help! Students, family and faculty come out to our matches to watch some good tennis, and show just how strong Mustang Pride is.

Coaching Philosophy: Academics First – It cannot be overstated that the most important aspect of a student-athlete’s career is academics. Putting academics first may seem obvious, but given a coach’s day to day responsibilities and the competitive environment in which we work, it can be easy to lose sight of this. I try very hard to put this idea at the forefront of my thinking each day. That said, prioritizing academics should not diminish the players’ commitment to their team and it is my responsibility to clearly communicate what is expected of them both academically and athletically creating a culture of excellence.

Culture of Excellence – This is a key to long term success! Elements of a culture of excellence are excellence in the classroom, giving your best at practice daily, and having an on-court mental toughness that emphasizes winning “the right way” (which is displaying an intense fighting spirit while being respectful of your opponents, officials and opposing coaches)

Celebrating their twenty-fourth year in existence, Angela Ottmann continues to serve as the Head Varsity Poms/Dance Coach at Ponderosa, assisted by Jenna Eyre, Allie Laudick and Kenna Wilhelm. We are super excited with our teams and coaching staff!! The 3-PEAT STATE CHAMPS return with an amazing list of talent and will be going for a FOURPEAT at the State Level, which would earn the program their 11th State Championship this season!!! #quadsquad This year’s slogan, “POWER OF PASSION”… these young dancers are determined to continue Ponderosa’s reputation of excellence & perseverance, on and off the dance floor!

The Poms program continues to be eager in INCREASING SPIRIT more than ever as they celebrate another strong year, continuing the tradition of the Ponderosa Poms/Dance Team Legacy!!!

As spirit leaders, the Poms/Cheers serve as ambassadors to the school and will focus on the goal of providing quality entertainment and spirit to the students and fans of Ponderosa High School!

The Ponderosa Poms/Dance Team continues to be one of the best in the State!!!!

In 2016 they earned their 10th STATE TITLE, another League Title, Leadership Award and several Regional Titles and ranked 5th in the Nation!!! 2017 Cross Country Team Philosophy Ponderosa Cross Country is guided by the philosophy that physical fitness is a component of lifelong wellness. We believe that Ponderosa student-athletes can positively influence their lives by being on a team, by pursuing team and personal goals and by channeling their personal energy into positive lifestyle choices and habits. We provide an atmosphere that promotes a strong team environment and a commitment to excellence. Ponderosa Cross County incorporates opportunities for our student-athletes to improve their running skills, love for running and grow into young adults who will make positive contributions to their families, communities and to themselves. We welcome all athletes regardless of their abilities.

We do not cut members from our team.

Our goal is to get our teams to the State Cross Country meet at the end of October. This takes dedication and commitment. We encourage each runner to compete physically as well as mentally to reach his or her full potential maximizing the success of the team. The Ponderosa Cross Country Coaching Staff takes a holistic approach in coaching and training.

Cheerleading Philosophy

As a Mustang Cheerleader, we support and promote school spirit at Ponderosa High School. Members of the Team have a unique opportunity for personal growth, teamwork, leadership and involvement in school activities. The attitude, dedication, and enthusiasm of the team members are just as important as the skills involved in cheerleading. Members of both the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheer teams must be committed to the highest level of athleticism, performance, self-discipline, respect for school and others, and exemplify school spirit and pride. Cheerleaders are students first, and must demonstrate a proven ability to balance academic requirements and the demands associated with extra-curricular activities.

Volleyball Philosophy

My coaching philosophy is developing an athlete with sportsmanship, competitiveness, confidence, respect for teammates, and passion for this sport. Believing in each player is key it builds confidence. When we believe in the athlete they will believe in you as a coach. They will desire to play their best for you the coach, for themselves, and for their team. I want to raise the bar for teaching each athlete as well as the team, teaching them how to reach and push from within reaching each goal one step at a time. I want to provide an opportunity for growth both on and off the court so that they will take with them the life lessons they learn throughout the season. Those lessons carry on for years making them better individuals in the future. I believe in the “never say die” attitude that brings out the best in the players and the team joining us together in unity and strength as we fight for each point.
