Tis the Season at Tagawa!
Tagawa Garden Center isn’t just the place to be come spring time planting or summer colors – the holiday season is just as special at Tagawa! Imagine strolling through a forest of fragrant Christmas trees, all supple and standing straight in water-filled tree stands, almost as fresh as the day they were cut. This pinescented forest is exactly what you’ll find inside the Tagawa greenhouse during the holidays. Tagawa’s trees receive a fresh cut as soon as they get them, and then another when you buy them. They’re bundled securely for the trip home to be decorated. All of this attention to detail, and a free bottle of tree preservative, means your holiday trees will stay fresher longer, and that fresh cut, Christmas tree smell will soon be filling your home! The fresh greenery gets just as much TLC as the trees. You can choose pre-made garland, centerpieces and door swags or make your own. Tagawa offers beautiful boughs of Princess Pine, Incense Cedar, Hemlock, Fir and many more. Feeling creative? Build your own “Porch Pots,” of fresh evergreen arrangements to fill outdoor containers that once spilled over with summertime flowers. Tagawa’s offers Porch Pot lessons and demos every season to help you make your outdoors as beautiful and festive as the indoors. You can also pick up wreaths, poinsettias, blooming gift plants, home décor and gifts at Tagawa. All the flora and fabulous gifts aren’t the only reason to stop by Tagawa this season, there are lots of special events and classes to check out as well! Saturday, December 1st As you step into Tagawa’s indoor Christmas tree forest, you’ll notice some furry friends

Kids can get crafty with Children’s Crafts and Story with Apraphoe Libraries from 11am-3pm. While you’re there, stop by and visit with Santa himself; he’ll be there from noon to 3pm both Saturday and Sunday. Sunday, December 2nd Along with visiting Santa from 12pm-3pm, you can check out Homemade Goodies for Holiday Gifting from 1pm-2:30pm. Create healthy, homemade goodies to give as delicious gifts! Just in time for holiday gift-giving, presenter Heather Braaten, Holistic Health Chef, will share her secrets to Sugar Plums, Raw Fudge, & Golden Spice Paste. Included in the class are recipes to make these treats at home and ideas on how to package them as gifts. Reserve your place registering online or by calling (303)-6904722 (x101) This is a free class, but registration is required. Kids can also adopt their own reindeer from 2pm-2:30pm. Registration and pre-payment is required. Create a family memory and join us for this fun little workshop! With a little bit of glue and grown-up help, kids get to accessorize and adopt their own wooden reindeer to take home! This forest reindeer will fit right in at your front door or near your Christmas tree. (Adult participation required!)
Saturday, December 8th The Alpacas are back at Tagawa from 11am3pm. Stroll through the indoor Christmas Tree forest, snap some one of a kind photos and shop for the warmest, softest gloves, hats and other products made from our friends the alpacas. This is definitely not your Granny’s “Christmas Carol!” The Aurora Fox Arts Center promises a naughty, bawdy, irreverent spin on a holiday classic with The Second City’s “Twist Your Dickens.” “Twist Your Dickens” is a holiday treat that will definitely make your holly jolly and jingle your bells! The Second City’s holiday send up, “Twist Your Dickens” is a perfect blend of scripted dialogue, sketch comedy and improvisational acting. Written by former “Colbert Report” writers Peter Gwinn and Bobby Mort, “Twist Your Dickens” brings together some of Colorado’s fiercest and funniest comedians, under the direction of nationally recognized director, fight choreographer and commedia dell’arte expert, Matthew R. Wilson. Because of the unique comedic challenges a show like “Twist Your Dickens” presents, the Aurora Fox’s Executive Producer, Helen R. Murray, collaborated directly with the team at The Second City to identify Wilson as the right director for this project, and to assemble an all‐local cast of Colorado favorites. Erik Sandvold stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, while Sean Cummins, Ilasiea Gray, Seth Palmer Harris, Sara Milbrath, Charlie Schmidt and the inimitable comedic powerhouse, Jessica Austgen, play absolutely everyone else. addition to the classic Dickensian characters you’ve come to expect, you’ll also see these actors’ take on George Bailey from “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the three wise men from the Nativity story and a collection of raucous holiday party guests from across the decades, among an array of wacky characters. “The basic storyline we’ve all come to love is definitely still there,” says Murray, who took over leadership of the Aurora Fox Arts Center at the start of 2018, “but we’ve all seen it, right? And that’s what makes it so much fun when the timeless ghost story we think we know spins out of control and not only parodies “A Christmas Carol,” but also completely lampoons all the other holiday tropes and pop‐culture expectations we’ve come to look for at this time of year.” Murray also says that the elements of improvisational acting and audience participation that this show includes promises that no two performances of “Twist Your Dickens” will ever be the same. But be forewarned: this isn’t your Granny’s “Christmas Carol.” The mature themes and tart tongues featured in The Second City’s “Twist Your Dickens” have compelled Murray to put a content‐advisory on this show. So tuck the kiddos all snug in their beds, and while visions of sugar‐plums dance through their heads, get yourself down to the Aurora Fox Arts Center for some
not‐so‐family‐friendly holiday fun! The Second City’s “Twist Your Dickens” runs at the historic Aurora Fox Arts Center through December 23rd. Call the box office at 303.739.1970 to reserve your seats, or to arrange a one‐of‐a‐kind, “twisted” holiday party for your business or organization. For more information, or to purchase tickets online, go to aurorafoxartscenter.org. The Aurora Fox Arts Center is home to the award winning professional theatre company operated by the city of Aurora’s Cultural Services Division. The theatre is a member of the Actors’ Equity Association and includes two performance spaces. The Aurora Fox Arts Center is committed to diversity and inclusion in our selection of plays, our casting practices and our pursuit of theatrical innovation.
The Second City began as a small comedy theatre more than 50 years ago, and has grown to become today’s leading brand in improv‐based sketch comedy. With a variety of theatres, training centers and full‐time touring ensembles, you can find The Second City all over the world. Successful Second City alums include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Chris Farley, Bill Murray, Steve Carell and many more of your favorite comedians.

Harry Samora Foundation
Annual Toy Drive “When you lose a child, you lose a part of yourself. You have to start your life all over. You begin with just learning how to breathe again. Many days you have to talk yourself into getting out of bed to face another painful day. You have to find something or someone that can make this life bearable. These are ongoing struggles that I, and every parent who have lost a child, have to face. My son lived for eight years and fifty one days. In that short time he loved helping others, loved caring for others, and especially loved to see other children smile. He was a funny boy, with endless, silly jokes. He was a warm person, giving hugs at just the right time. He was not perfect, but he was perfect to me. Just the sight of him filled my heart with love. I can’t share a future with my son, but I can see his legacy live on; a legacy that will keep Harry’s spirit alive forever!” In an effort to ensure her son’s legacy lives on, Mia Samora began a toy drive, on what would have been her son Harry’s 9th birthday, over a decade ago. That Memorial Birthday Party collected 50 toys that were delivered to patients at Children’s Hospital here in Parker. Over the last decade, Harry’s Toy Drive has grown each and every year, delivering hundreds of toys and gift cards to patients each Christmas. “I have not done this alone. Many businesses and schools have partnered with me to make Harry’s Toy Drive a true community effort each year.” The toys and gift cards collected are delivered to pediatric patients at Children’s Hospital just before Christmas, making the holidays a bit brighter for those forced to spend them in the hospital instead of at home. The smiles on the faces of the children receiving these gifts is a reminder of the ever-present grin Harry had on his face. “I am hoping when my son looks down, he will see those smiles, and perhaps it will make him smile too.” New, unwrapped toys and gift cards (for older children) will be collected over the next couple of weeks. If you would like to spread some Christmas cheer, and help the keep Harry’s legacy going strong, please drop your donations at one of the following schools or places of business. Deep Space New Year's Eve Gala Benefitting Daltons Moon Foundation New Year’s Eve plans are often tricky. You may want to go out, but not want to deal with big crowds downtown, or driving, or getting a hotel room to avoid driving that night. But staying at home every year can get a little stale. If you’re ready for a fabulous night out, right here in Parker, then the perfect New Year’s plans are already made for you! Downtown Parker’s Deep Space Event Center, Art Gallery & Lounge, now owned and operated by Ray and Antoinette Engelke, will be the place to be this New Year’s Eve! The Engelke’s, familiar faces to many in our community, who also own Moonlight Bartending, have taken over ownership of Deep Space and are proud to partner with Aneeda’s Action Network and the Board of Dalton’s Moon Foundation to cordially extend an invitation for 240 guests to attend the New Year’s Eve Gala 2018. This year’s party will start off with a Prime Rib Dinner Buffet by Rory’s Catering and continue with entertainment and dancing throughout the evening with music by Blinker Fluid Band, party favors, and, of course, a champagne toast at midnight! All of this for only $75 per person! Doors will open for this semi formal event at 7:00pm and wrap up at 1:00am. For tickets, follow the link on Deep Spaces website 11
DECEMBER 2018 search south aurora magazine
at www.deepspace.me/NYE2018/ This evening is sure to sell out, so purchase your tickets today and then put on your dancing shoes and get ready to Ring In 2019 in style. What makes the Gala at Deep Space even better is it’s a party with a purpose. Proceeds from the Gala and Auction will benefit Dalton’s Moon Foundation. Dalton Levine was a bright light in the Parker community. An amazing student, accomplished musician and incredible dancer who you may have seen in one of his many featured performances in “The Nutcracker” at the PACE Center each year. Sadly, Dalton left this world much too soon after a long battle with cancer, but his beautiful legacy lives on through the work of the foundation, which honors Dalton’s desire to pay it forward locally. Just this September, Dalton’s Moon Foundation presented donation checks to both Flight for Life Colorado and Children’s Hospital. Organizers of this year’s Gala would like to express their gratitude to their Presenting Sponsor, MedSafety Solutions. Additional sponsors include Deep Space, Aflac, Action Network Event Architecture and KC Taekwondo.

THEBOOKENDS
with Pam & Becky
Winter Street By: Elin Hilderbrand
Million Dollar Party: A Restaurant Memoir
Kelley Quinn was excited to spend time with his family this Christmas. He owns the Winter Street Inn in beautiful Nantucket. He was planning for another Christmas filled with tradition and family memories. That all starts to fall apart as he walks in to find his wife Mitzi, passionately kissing the man who has played Santa Claus for years at their annual Christmas party. It won’t be the only surprise as his four children and ex-wife bring him into the drama that is happening in each of their own lives. BECKY: Elin Hilderbrand has written over twenty books but this is the first time I have picked up one of her novels. I was strolling through the store looking for something with a Christmas theme and by chance selected this book. What I didn’t realize at the time is that this is the first book in a collection of four about the Quinn family. They are an interesting group and we get to learn a little bit about each one. Was there one character that you enjoyed more than another? PAM: I enjoyed Margaret, Kelley’s
ex-wife. She had missed out on a lot of her children’s lives due to her career and their divorce. However, she has a strong love for her family and I enjoyed the way she was beginning to make them a priority. Did you enjoy Margaret and this part of the story?
BECKY: She was my favorite character too. I loved that this novel showed a divorced couple that was friendly. I always enjoy a strong woman with a fierce love for her family. It was refreshing that she had some depth and a realistic situation as a career driven mom. This is a quick and easy read during this busy season but there is more depth to the characters then we usually see in a “holiday” book. There are three more novels about the Quinn family. Would you want to know more about this cooky family or was this first book enough for you? PAM: I would be interested in
reading another book about this family. There were many different storylines in this book and I felt that the author still had a lot to share with readers. One of the story lines focuses on Margaret and Kelley’s daughter, Ava, who is an elementary
13
school teacher in Nantucket. She is hoping that her boyfriend will ask her to marry him, but is disappointed when he decides to spend Christmas with his family in another city. While waiting for this to happen, she overlooks a coworker who is always there when she needs him and who hopes she will see him as more than a friend. What did you feel about this character?
BECKY: I guess this is what is so
sugary sweet about this kind of book. She is dating the guy that on paper looks like a great catch but in reality he is not the right man for her. On the sideline is the perfect man but she doesn’t know it just yet. It was a darling storyline for a quick read and I enjoyed how it worked out. We won’t spill the beans and tell you whom, but someone in this story gets pregnant. How did you like that little bit of exciting news?
PAM: That piece of unexpected
news brought some excitement to a point in the story where there were a lot of challenges for family members. This twist in the plot allowed for a positive turn of the story and helped change perspective for some of the characters. One perspective that did not seem to change was that of Mitzi, Kelley Quinn’s wife. She left Kelley after he caught her kissing the man who played Santa Clause at their inn. She did not seem to fit in with the rest of the family, although her and Kelley had been married a long time. What did you think of this character?
BECKY: She had a fairly small role but I did not connect with her or find her very likable. It looks like she shows up again if you read more in this series so maybe we will come to like her more. This is a great holiday

story and I think the rest of the series would also be interesting. I love how Kelley celebrates Christmas and opens his home to others. What is a tradition that you have when you celebrate Christmas in the Waid home?
PAM: We have many different
traditions, but one of my favorites is one that my parents did with my brother, sister, and me. After returning home from church on Christmas Eve, we all get a hot chocolate and pile into the car to look at Christmas lights. When the boys were younger they would get into their pajamas before heading out. Our babies are no longer babies, but they still play along with Mom and Dad! How about the Narlinger house? Is there a tradition that makes the holiday special?
BECKY: Our tradition is fitting for
my crazy clan. We have an ugly sock exchange. The uglier the better and you have to wear them all day long. You should see the looks we get when someone drops by unexpected!
Have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from Bookends and Waid Publishing! May 2019 bring you peace and joy!
This is the story of our lives, and the drama surrounding our restaurant and bar. We spent years engrossed in laying the groundwork, which led to our ambition getting off the ground. We opened Bob’s Gridiron Grille and the Pigskin Pub in Lincoln, Nebraska, known worldwide as Cornhusker country. Totally convinced my one-of-a-kind collection of Nebraska football memorabilia would be a draw, I was dead wrong. This is not a how-to-book. How could it be? We failed. We’re not qualified to tell anybody anything, other than what we experienced. This memoir delves into the why, the wherefore, and the what. Why did I want a restaurant? What did we do to plan for our venture, and what exactly happened? Our sincere hope is what we have shared serves a purpose. We welcome you inside our old establishment, opening the doors one final time. http://www.milliondollarpartybook. com/book.php
