Aurora Fox Arts March Lineup Life Sucks. At least it does through March 17th. Written by Aaron Posner and directed by Helen R. Murray, this rather brash reworking of “Uncle Vanya” focuses on a group of old friends, ex-lovers, estranged in-laws and lifelong enemies all gathering to grapple with life’s thorniest questions as well as each other. The Washington Post called it, “sassy yet heartfelt” and “altogether wise, profoundly humane and hilarious” by the Chicago Sun Times. This is definitely not any Chekov you may know. Unhappiness on stage has never been so much fun for those in the audience! Showtimes Thursday through Sunday. Go online or call the box office for tickets. The Happiest Place on Earth – March 8th through March 24th Written by Philip Dawkins and directed by Matt Bassett, this show features one actress, playing all the roles in a heartwarming story that take us to the magical kingdom and shows us one family’s reckoning with life after the death of their beloved father and husband. Now, a half a century after their journey, the author retraces his own truelife story that illustrates how the women of his family grew up and moved on, all the while wondering if there is a place where dreams really do come true. Showtimes are available Thursday-Sunday. Contact the box office or go online to reserve tickets. Beginning April 5th and running through May 5th, catch “Caroline or Change,” book and lyrics by Tony Kushner,
music by Jeanine Tesori and directed by Kenny Moten. This Tony nominated musical, set in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, follows a black maid working for a middle-class, Jewish family in Louisiana. After a small amount of money goes missing, buried tensions threaten to completely rip two families, and the struggling Caroline, apart. This story, which is loosely based on Tony Kushner’s personal and provocative story, features a virtuosic score blending blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies. The story and the songs blend together for a magical, showstopping musical masterpiece. Change for Caroline opens April 5th with shows running Thursday through Sunday except for Saturday, April 27th due to the annual Aurora Fox fundraising Gala. Reserve your tickets online or by calling the box office. Box Office hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 am-5:00 pm and 1 hour prior to performance Walk-up Hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10:00 am-4:00 pm and 1 hour prior to performance. Something truly amazing is coming to Parker… Miss Amazing. Colorado joined Miss Amazing, Inc. two years ago with just 22 participants. In its second year, Colorado Miss Amazing more than doubled their participants to 51 last year. The hope is that this year’s event brings in even more participants. Colorado Miss Amazing may sound like another pageant; it’s so much more than another pageant. Colorado Miss Amazing provides opportunities for girls and women with disabilities to build confidence and self esteem in a very supportive environment. Miss Amazing is comprised of a community of people that invests in the strengths of girls and women with disabilities, because no matter any young women’s abilities or challenges, she can do great things. Colorado is one of 30 states across the country that host Miss Amazing events where thousands of volunteers have come forward to celebrate diversity and true girl power. To date, 1,700 girls and women have benefited from Miss Amazing programs. Miss Amazing events provide a public platform 5

for girls and women with disabilities to define themselves on their own terms and help to dispel stereotypes. The sisterhood develops friendships and provides the opportunity for participants to test their own boundaries and take on new challenges. Colorado Miss Amazing kicks off on Friday, March 29th, at the Holiday Inn on Cottonwood Drive, which has become the Official Colorado Miss Amazing Hotel. Rehearsals and registration will be followed by orientation and then it’s time for the participants to have some serious fun all while preparing for day two’s events. The evening will end with a pajama dance party with live entertainment from Shelvis and the Roustabouts. Day Two will be held at the PACE Center and starts off with the talent showcase. After a 2 hour break for hair and makeup and a dinner for participants and their buddies, the final show will commence at 6pm. There will be incredible surprises, awards and much, much more. Over 350 people attended last year’s event, and more than 30 businesses and organizations have signed on as sponsors
for the Colorado Miss Amazing event; which stands to reason because with an event this special and inspiring, who wouldn’t want to be a part of it? In addition to the astounding things this program is doing for all the girls and women who participate, it’s allowing those same participants to give back to the community. Participants pay a small fee to be a part of Colorado Miss Amazing; 5 cans of food. To date, over 450 cans of food have been donated to local food banks by the representatives of Colorado Miss Amazing. Something this special should be shared with everyone. Whether you might be interested in this event as a participant, a volunteer, or a sponsor, it is bound to leave a lasting mark on your heart. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail By: Cheryl Strayed
Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship
Wild tells the story of Cheryl, who lost her mother to cancer and then witnessed her family scatter. As she struggled with the loss of her mother and her family, her marriage ended in divorce and she was lost. She saw a book about the Pacific Crest Trail and an idea began to grow. She decided to take on this challenge alone, as she attempted to put her life back together and find herself. Although she had a love of the outdoors, she did not have the experience that would prepare her for this journey. She would hike more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington state. PAM: Within the last few
years, this book was made into a movie, starring Reese Witherspoon. I was intrigued by the trailer, but never had the opportunity to see it. When I recently saw the book on a list of must-reads I felt drawn to the story. Becky, have you seen the movie?
BECKY: I have not seen the movie yet, but I think it would be interesting to see the scenery that was described in the book. I have heard of this trail and am amazed that someone without experience accomplished so much! I found it strange to read a book that already placed Reese in my head as the main character. Usually, it’s the other way around. We read a novel and then create our own version of the character. That threw me off a bit and I struggled to picture Reese in that role. What did you enjoy the most in this book, Cheryl’s story of her life to that point, or the process of completing the elevenhundred mile hike? PAM: I enjoyed her description of the day to day struggle to complete her hike. Honestly, I was frustrated with aspects of the story of her life before the hike and was eager to
13
see if she found healing, worth, and understanding through her challenging hike. I completely agree with you about the accomplishment of an inexperienced hiker taking on such a monumental task! Her determination to continue to fight to reach her goal was admirable. I wonder if she would have had as much drive if she was not battling so many demons from her life. Do you think this was the key to her success?
BECKY: That is an interesting question and I wonder how a book club would respond. I wouldn’t say that I viewed her as a goal driven athlete. The story would have drawn me in even more if she was. As I read, I felt like her personality didn’t line up with the physical accomplishments she was making so it was unbalanced for me. I gather that she was at the end of her rope and this was a form of therapy to help her crawl up from hitting rock bottom. She wasn’t prepared for this adventure but she needed to let go of the past and ultimately find a new life for herself. I wonder if her success was due to the fact that she wasn’t ready to return to her regular life. She continued to put one

foot in front of the other until the end. I struggled liking and understanding Cheryl. I admire that she was so honest about her past but I didn’t meld with her story nor did I have empathy for her. Did you connect with her and would you be interested to know more about how she is doing now?
PAM: I also struggled to
connect with her throughout the story. I would be interested to know more about how she is doing now. She shared some very self destructive behaviors during the recounting of her past and I would like to follow up and see if her hiking experience helped her overcome these struggles. Along the trail are small towns where a hiker can have packages sent in order to restock supplies. Do you think it would be interesting to spend some time in one of the towns and talk to the people as they hiked through?
BECKY: That would be very interesting but I honestly would rather be one of the hikers! It’s time to walk away from this story and move on to our April selection. Join us as we discuss The Red Address Book by Sofia Lundberg.
In his new book, “Farmers Markets: A Guide to Small Scale Business and Entrepreneurship”, author Bill English uses his business and counseling experience to provide a guide of helpful hints and counsel for the novice as well as the experienced Farmers Market vendor, to enable the small business man/woman to increase the opportunity to succeed. Within these pages, you will find nuggets of great information that will help you with your business venture. Some of the tenants taught are also applicable to other small business ventures. The book is meant to be a quick read, organized to help you set up a new business or improve an existing business. Those who want to expand their business beyond the single Farmers Market, will find information to encourage entrepreneurship to operate many other Farmers Market booths as well as expand into the wholesale arenas selling to local, regional, state, and national outlets.
