Tagawa Gardens
7711 S Parker Rd 303.690.4722 www.tagawagardens.com Open Monday-Saturday 9am-5pm, Sundays 10am5pm through November 20th
You may be familiar with the huge greenhouse, filled inside and out, with amazing trees and plants that is nestled right of Parker Road. Tagawa Gardens is hard to miss, but you may not realize just how rich the history behind Tagawa really is. The Tagawa family bought the greenhouse property in 1978 and grew long stem roses for the wholesale trade. When the blizzard of 1982 crushed many of the greenhouses, they decided to convert part of the greenhouse into a retail garden center and continued to grow long stem roses. Now the property is all garden center, but they still grow most of their own potted roses and annuals. The property was not originally purchased with the intention of being a retail store, but luckily for everyone in this area, it evolved into the amazing garden retail center is it today. In addition to the seemingly endless options of indoor and outdoor plants, flowers and trees that Tagawa continually has available, they also offer classes about gardening, nature, crafts, cooking and many other topics. You can also enjoy concerts, family events, trail walks and all sorts of other activities each and every month. Tagawa’s calendar page is definitely one to bookmark and visit often to be sure you’re not missing any of the fun! This month, check out Tagawa’s fall family festival the first three weekends of October; perfect for families with younger children looking for lots of fun, fall activities that visitors of every age will enjoy. Although some activities are ticketed, all the educational booths and stage shows are free and appropriate for any age. The Pumpkin Festival runs the first three weekends of October, Saturday and Sunday from 10am-3pm. Grab
unique and traditional pumpkins, gourds and corn stalks for your fall décor and stock up fall color with favorites including Black Eyed Susans and ornamental cabbage to really make it feel like autumn has finally arrived. Tagawa’s dedicated staff, which collectively has over 800 years of experience, are committed to upholding their vision, “to provide an enjoyable experience for our community, as well as the highest quality service, products and education, and respect for our environment.” The staff stands by that in every aspect of what they do, from growing many of their annuals, roses and other types of plants right there on the premises, to offering onsite and offsite custom container gardening services. The practice what they preach as well, even using mostly beneficial insects to control insect pests in their greenhouses, to keep the staff, and community and environment safe. The staff at Tagawa firmly believes that everyone can benefit from having plants in their home. Plants help clean the air through their photosynthesis process, help relieve stress, induce relaxation and increase productivity. Many people begin with a small plant like a succulent or air plant (Tillandsia) and get hooked on the wonderful benefits plants bring to their life. The staff at Tagawa make it their mission to help you find the perfect plants for your home, whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or all thumbs when it comes to gardening. Season 34 at The Aurora Fox Arts Center includes an extended line up and some exciting new work including “Songs for a New World,” “Twist Your Dickens,” “Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies,” “Life Sucks,” “The Happiest Place on Earth” and “Caroline, or Change,” largely new productions to the Aurora area. This season will be Helen R. Murray’s debut season as the Aurora Fox executive producer. “It is so thrilling to announce the Aurora Fox’s 34th season, and my first with them,” said Murray. “In selecting work for the Aurora Fox I wanted to honor the history of beautiful work that has been on display here for so long, but to also use that foundation to celebrate pieces that may not have made it to this area as of yet. My hope is that Aurora Fox audiences will find shows this season that speak to what they best loved about us, as well as enjoy the next chapter in our progression.” The Aurora Fox opened its 2018-2019 season in September with “Songs for a New World,” written and composed by Jason Robert Brown. This unique musical centers on the idea of life changing decisions that lands us in a place we never expected, a metaphorical and sometimes literal “new world.” There are moments in our lives where we pass the point of no return and can only step boldly into the future and this musical encompasses that journey. Helen R. Murray will direct this show, which runs through October 14th. In December, The Aurora Fox will turn the holidays upside down with Second City’s “Twist Your Dickens.” After successful runs in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Portland and Chicago, the Aurora Fox brings to life Second City’s irreverent and interactive seasonal satire. A madcap, and adult, send-up of the holiday classic, “Twist Your Dickens” finds Scrooge, Tiny Tim and those know-it-all ghosts hopelessly mixed up in zany holiday sketches. Deemed by the Chicago Sun-Times as a "fresh and bountiful feast of funny," Second City alums and veteran “Colbert Report” writers Peter Gwinn and Bobby Mort dreamt up this new take on “A Christmas Carol.” The new year brings Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm’s explosive, funny and searing look at being a young black teenager in America today with “Hooded, or Being Black for Dummies.” This brilliant new comedy was called “breathtakingly on-point” by the Washington Post and spurred rigorous discussion about the life and death issues dealt with in this wildly insightful piece. Moving into February 2019, the Aurora Fox will continue to make its foray into life changing moments with “Life Sucks” by Aaron Posner. This enlightening reworking of Uncle Vanya finds a group of old friends, ex-lovers, estranged in-laws and lifelong enemies as they gather to grapple with life’s thorniest questions—and each other. Called “sassy yet heartfelt” by The Washington Post and “altogether wise, profoundly humane, and hilarious” by the Chicago Sun Times, this is not any Chekov you know.

March will bring a special limited-run performance of Philip Dawkins’ “The Happiest Place on Earth.” One actor plays every role in this heartwarming play that takes us to the magical kingdom and one family’s reckoning with life after the death of their beloved father and husband. More than 50 years after their journey, Philip (as the central character in his own true life story) retraces and illustrates how the women of his family grew up and moved on while asking if there really is a place where dreams can come true. The Aurora Fox will close out Season 34 with a thought-provoking musical that gives a grounded human context for the historical watershed that was America in 1963, “Caroline, or Change” by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori. Set in the heat of the Civil Rights Movement, the Tony-nominated “Caroline, Or Change” follows a black maid working for a middle-class Jewish family in Louisiana. When a small amount of money goes missing, buried tensions threaten to rip two families, and the struggling Caroline, apart. Loosely based on Kushner’s provocative and personal story, Caroline features a virtuosic score that blends blues, gospel, and traditional Jewish melodies into a magical, show-stopping musical masterpiece. In addition to the Season 34's full scale productions, the Fox will continue with its Cabaret Series featuring intimate performances by local and national talent, and will add a Staged Reading Series to look at new plays in development throughout the year. The Fox is very excited to be giving back to the theatrical community this season. They will host a workshop reading of David Nehls’ and Zac Miller’s “Killer Wigs From Outer Space” followed by a Halloween Party; and all proceeds from this event will go to the Denver Actor’s Fund. The Fox will also host show-affiliated panel discussions and talk backs with each production this season in their 'Beyond The Show' programming. Executive Producer Helen Murray invites you to experience all the amazing productions at the Aurora Fox. “The season contains something for everyone. If you have been to the Fox regularly, we will keep you coming back. If you haven’t been in a while, or have yet to take the trip, then this is definitely the season you should join us!” Songs for a New World September 14 - October 14, 2018 Killer Wigs From Outer Space October 31, 2018 Twist Your Dickens November 23 - December 23, 2018 Hooded, Or Being Black for Dummies January 18 - February 10, 2019 Life Sucks February 22 - March 17, 2019 The Happiest Place on Earth March 8 - March 24, 2019 Caroline or Change April 5 - May 12, 2019

Having A Perfect
HALLOWEEN Party There’s two kinds of people in this world. Those that will oblige their holiday loving friends, throw some pumpkins and maybe a few mums on their porch and might even get in on the fun and wear a costume to the party. Then there are those who have pumpkin spice flowing through their veins. Those who have already hit Parker Party America a few times to get just one more spooky decoration for the Halloween landscape on their lawn and have been planning the perfect costume for their killer Halloween party for months. Okay, maybe there’s more than two kinds of people when it comes to all things Halloween, but no matter if you’ve been planning your party for weeks or you decide to get some friends together at the last minute, there’s some simple things you can do to make a killer Halloween get-together, and you can get almost every single thing you need in the aisles of Party America, right here in town! First, for your “Horror-able” Décor. Be sure to decorate any areas that guests will be spending time, whether it’s the front porch, back deck or anywhere in between. Don’t worry, filling the space isn’t as scary as it sounds. Go straight to the balloons at Party
America, grab some orange and white balloons (which they will fill with helium and tie with matching strings too!) Use a sharpie to add jack-o-lantern or ghost faces to them for spooktakular centerpieces or accents in the room. You can also get some black tulle, cover your larger helium balloons, and gather the tulle at the bottom for a spookier effect. Once you have your décor set, you’ll want to take pictures of your family and friends to post, grab a backdrop and photo prop set and share your memories. Another simple fix? Head over to Party America’s wedding aisle, yep, wedding. Grab some tissue paper wedding lanterns/ bells, add some construction paper eyes, drape with cheesecloth and, boom! Little ghosts are now guests at your party. When you head to the back of the store to grab your plates and napkins, get some extra table covers and use them as backdrops or extra bunting accents. Have some smaller round tables? 1 white or orange table cover + some black construction eyes and you have a table that doubles as décor! As you peruse the aisles, toss a fake pumpkin, a witch’s hat and some faux leaves in your cart. Turn the pumpkin on its side (the stem is now a nose), add the leaves for some hair and top with the hat for an easy witch. A fog machine, inflatable decor or spooky lights will set a memorable scene now and for years to come. With all the fun items to choose from at Party America, there will be no shortage of easy accents to make your home Trick or Treat ready! Now for the boo-ffet. Mummify your beverages! Grab a tub and wrap it with crepe paper, throw on a couple eyes. Now a Mummy is keeping all those drinks cool. Make the ice in the tub (and for your drinks) a little spookier by grab some plastic spiders and freeze them in your ice cube trays. Don’t forget to pick up your
7

favorite “Mr. Bones” decor, but instead of propping him up outside, lay him on one of your serving trays and turn your charcuterie to char-boo-terie and fill him with your meat and cheese spread for a ghoulish buffet centerpiece. Sweets should get the scare treatment too, right? Jump on the “naked” cake trend and serve a chocolate pumpkin cake on a simple cake stand to set it apart from other sweet offerings. Make it easy and grab a few different sized bowls and fill with treats! If the grown ups want a little treat too, try making a Candy Corn cocktail concoction. Many easy and fun themed cocktail recipes are available online. Best part is… you can walk through Party America and get everything from fun (and scary) decorations for every corner of your home. Grab accents like balloons, fun little tricks and all you could need to display and serve your treats as well as a costume to make sure you’re the host/hostess with the most/mostess. Grab a veil and tiara and get your Duchess of Sussex on or pick up a magic wand and cape and enroll at Hogwarts. DIY anything you could possibly think up by choosing from aisles and aisles of accessories like hats, wigs, props and, if you really want to commit, some face paint and just go crazy! Not feeling particularly creative? No worries, Party America has everything from Ghostbusters to Hocus Pocus and everything in between. Simply make your pick, tell a Party America associate the number of your choice, try it on and go! Go to www.parkerparty.com to browse all the options! From decorations to tableware, treats to tricks - Party America is a one stop shop for everything you need for every holiday and special occasion! The owners and staff are committed to giving personalized service to every trick or treater or party host and help them create a one of a kind Halloween experience.

HALLOWEEN FUN AT
FLAT ACRES
FARMS
For nearly a decade, Flat Acres Farm has be the go-to for Parker residents looking for fun come fall. Family owned since 1948, Flat Acres farm was originally an irrigated hay farm but irrigation issues in 2007 forced them to halt their hay business and the family was left to figure out what the next phase of life for Flat Acres Farm was to be. Almost ten years ago, the idea to offer Parker residents a local pumpkin patch was born and with each passing year, the fall festivities at Flat Acres continue to get bigger and better. There’s a little something for everyone at Flat Acres. For the little ones (10 & under) admission will grant them access to the Bounce House, Petting Zoo, Duck Races, Corn Boxes, the Tractor Pull Hay Ride, Corn Maze, Bale Maze, Obstacle Course and Climbing Wall. Of course, mom and dad are welcome to get in on the fun too, all this is too fun to just watch!
For those who have been out to Flat Acres before, you may notice a few changes this year. The Petting Zoo, which will be twice the size as it was last year, is getting a few new, furry faces with the addition of a draft horse, a mule and a Zorse! Everyone that walks through the entrance will get a FREE mini pumpkin or gourd to take home, yes EVERYONE, and you can purchase local honey, corn stalks, hay bales and of course, pumpkins of all sizes, to create your own festive fall décor at home! For an
9
additional fee, you can also try out the Bungee Jump and Air-Soft Shooting Range. If all this fun starts to work up an appetite, visit one of the four food trucks that will be ready to crush your cravings. Funnelicious Funnel Cakes, George’s Kettle Corn, Colorado Pizza Company and Cold Smoke Ice Cream will all be on hand for everything from sweet treats to roasted corn, hamburgers and hot dogs! What would a Halloween outing be without something spooky? For those who dare, Reaper’s Hollow is back again. Voted as one of the top 3 haunted attractions in Colorado last year, Reaper’s Hollow is back with the “Newly Remodeled Dead End Hotel”, Goblin’s Grove and the Corn Maze. Nearly 70 actors come out each night to get their “fright” on. None of the effects are mechanical or robotic; it’s 100% authentic scares out there. These attractions are not recommended for children under 13 years of age. If you’re looking to add a little pumpkin spice to your fall birthday party or corporate party, Flat Acres can accommodate your group. They also host preschool groups, school groups, and moms groups during the week. There’s so much to see and do, you’ll have to come more than once! Head out to Flat Acres Farm for some serious scares and a lot of fall fun!

This area has no shortage of opportunities to participate in races through the beautiful trails and spaces right in our own backyards. Very few also the opportunity to allow the participants to give back to those who have given so much. On Saturday, October 27th, the Douglas County Veterans Monument Foundation is extremely proud to present VetFest, a 5K/10K race and Street Party in the heart of downtown Castle Rock in Festival Park. Last year, the first VetFest race was a such a huge success, organizers decided to make this year’s event even better, and have added the Street Party, which will carry on throughout the day. The racers will get their start in the 5 & 10K events at 10am. For those runners who are active duty military, veterans or first responders, be sure to use promo code SERVE to save $5 on your registration. Active and veteran military are also encouraged to join the Armed Forces Run Off and 11

select “Join an Existing Team” at registration. Choose your branch and which comes out on top on race day! Awards for the top three male and female finishers will also be announced t the finish line. Registration for the 5K is $35 and $40 for the 10K, if racers sign up before October 26th. If you miss the chance to register early, you can still sign up on race day for just $5 more. Best part is that all proceeds will go directly to local veterans in need. With the Veterans Monument completed, the Foundation goal is to be a valuable resource that directly supports our hometown heroes, our local veterans. Currently, they are accepting applications for their new Veterans Assistance Grant Program. This program is designed to assist in ADA home modifications, funeral expenses, service dogs and filling the void where any other service gap exists.
The new addition of the Street Party, which everyone is invited to attend, whether or not they choose to participate in the race, will be a great way to spend a Saturday. The VetFest Street Party will have artist booths, food trucks and live music from Sarah P and the Dirty Logger. Additionally, Street Party goers can enjoy all that’s offered from local breweries in the beer tents; official beer vendors include 105 West Brewing Company, Burly Brewing Company & Rockyard Brewing Company. Whether you’re planning on finishing that 5 or 10K or you’re just there for the party, come out to Festival Park later this month for the 2nd Annual VetFest and have a lot of fun, to do a lot of good, for our local veterans. THEBOOKENDS
with Pam & Becky
A Beautiful Work In Progress By: Mirna Valerio
This is a non-fiction book about Mirna Valerio. What you would picture if I told you the author is an avid longdistance runner? I bet that the picture in your mind does not match what the author looks like. Mirna is a plus size woman and does not have the typical svelte runner’s body. She is often incorrectly labeled and judged by society. However, she has logged some serious miles in her running shoes. This memoir takes us on her journey from an out of shape teen that a doctor labeled obese, to her first attempts at running, and then her journey to become an ultramarathoner. BECKY: I don’t read non-fiction
very often but this book was highly recommended and I have seen Mirna’s picture in ads so I had to check this out. I must post a warning that she uses some colorful language. It is somewhat often and might offend some readers. You don’t have to be an avid runner to enjoy this story. It was inspiring to hear her journey and how she embraces her large stature. She didn’t let anything get in her way once she committed to a running challenge. Pam, I didn’t realize until I started reading but Mirna is a model and ambassador for Skirt Sports, a company you recently became an ambassador for. Were you already familiar with her and her journey?
PAM: I have been following Mirna’s
story and journey recently. She is very inspirational as a runner and as a Skirt Sports ambassador. As I have been struggling with injuries and health issues, which have derailed some recent goals, I felt very connected to her story. She speaks very honestly about challenges, inspiration, and successes. This helped me put my struggles into perspective! Did you find her story interesting?
BECKY: Nonfiction can be
frustrating because the story often jumps around instead of following a timeline. That was challenging in this story and I felt lost a few times but my book has about a dozen postit-notes sticking out because she has some really inspirational thoughts and quotes. What inspires me the most is that she is plus size and feels 100% confident! I wish that more women, including myself, felt that beautiful with our imperfections. Have you looked at her blog or facebook page?
13
PAM: I have checked out her facebook page followed her as she prepared for a race recently. I was fortunate to hear her speak recently at a retreat in Boulder. She was very inspirational and delivered a great message to a room of women that were all shapes, sizes, and abilities. I completely agree with you about women following her lead and loving ourselves where we are. I love that she is always focused on becoming healthier, not for appearance, but for quality and longevity of life. I struggle with self confidence and body image issues, so this book was a welcome message. What did you think about her stories of the world of ultra running? Isn’t it amazing? BECKY: We should define ultra
running for those that are not familiar with this growing sport. It is any distance beyond 26.2 miles, which is a marathon. I am a reluctant runner and can’t imagine running a full marathon let alone a 50K. Yet, her stories inspire me to try something that is beyond what I would normally accomplish. As she wrote, I felt that if she could do it, then why couldn’t I? She commits to a race and then trains like a madwoman. I am amazed and astonished by those that participate in these races! Do you think that you have to enjoy running to like this memoir?
PAM: I think anyone could relate to this memoir because of the inspirational message. We could apply her persistence to any goal in our lives. Mirna is also a teacher and was working at a boarding school while writing her memoirs. It can be extremely challenging to fit in training with work, family, and day to day commitments. As she trained on and around the grounds of the school, do you think she was an inspiration to her students?
OCTOBER 2018 search south aurora magazine
BEKCY: I’m sure that she was an
inspiration to both the students, and staff of the school. About halfway through the book she includes a few letters from previous students that mention the impact she had on their lives. That’s amazing! Pam, I’ve never mentioned it but you inspire me with your desire to compete in a 50K. While I’m plugging along on the treadmill, completing less than a 5k, I often think about your commitment to training and it keeps me going. Mirna mentions that training can take over your life. She would wake up at 5:00am to start training and often do a second workout in the evening. Do you agree that fitting in the necessary training to be successful consumes your schedule?
PAM: That is so nice, Becky! Your support means a lot to me! I do agree that training can take over your life. Before suffering an injury during training earlier this year, I was also running twice a day to try to get enough miles in around my schedule. I typically get up at 4:15 am to get my workout done before heading into work. Although this sounds extreme to some, it allows me to stick to a schedule and not have training derailed on a busy day. This schedule also allows me to be available for after school sports/activities. I look forward to continuing to follow Mirna’s adventures and enjoy the inspiration she brings! Join us next month as we head in a completely different direction and discuss “Next Year in Havana” by Chanel Cleeton. Check out some other books we recommend in, The Bookshelf Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris. Is Grace’s marriage perfect, or a perfect lie?
LOCAL AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT Dreams of an Empty Tomb by: Corbin Dunn
Mistrenelle A city of law and peace, the center of the world. It is a city-kingdom protected by the mysterious Witch Hunters, ruled by those who threw off the shackles of magic. Only the nightly witch hunts remain as a reminder of the horrors of that time, when the streets are lit by spells, and run red with the blood of Hunter and Mancer alike. The Violet Night Eighteen years ago, the city glowed violet as a powerful necromancer enacted the ultimate ritual. Her army of undead clashed with the Witch Hunters in the most violent event since the Uprising. The blood stains the mind of Prince Destrivel Orophos still. It is, and has been ever since that night, his aspiration to become a Witch Hunter. But he is a royal, and worse, a male, destined to be married off as a trophy. His warrior training meant little in this time of peace, and his souls seeks something to break the shackles of duty and station that have held him all these years. Where to purchase: Amazon.com
